New Candys - Vyvyd

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Vyvyd" is the fourth and latest album by the Italian alternative rockers NEW CANDYS, it was released on 4 June 2021 via Little Cloud Records. NEW CANDYS was formed in Venice in 2008. "Vyvyd" has its own mythology where they played with religious, pagan, and archetypal symbols, which have been distorted through their own lens. If you have to sum up the album in one concept it would be the contradiction of light: God/good is often represented with a bright glow, whilst Lucifer, the personification of evil, means light-bearer. They have been inspired by the visionary cinema of Kenneth Anger and Alejandro Jodorowsky among others. "Vyvyd" is a very interesting release, where the music oscillates between some old-school psych-rock, 60's pop with vibes of shoegaze, and indie rock. Catchy melodies with a great vibe, but there is a shimmer of sad loneliness, with a happy shell. Hard to explain but that's the feeling I get when spinning this, nothing bad at all as my thoughts go into this pandemic and I guess that infects what they create whether they want to or not. But hey, this is freaking good. Give it a spin and you get my drift. It's a bit different but it works so well. Take the electro riff and the pummeling drumming of opener "Twin Mime" that grabs you by the neck into their world with fuzzy sonics and glorious chorus. Followed by heavy riffing and thunderous drumming in "Zyko". Then we change the direction to a softer and smoother ride in "Factice", quickly hear PRIMAL SCREAM echoing in the background. Nice song with good drive. "Begin Again" is a trippier number and "Evil Evil" opens the gate for some electro fuzz, amazing tune. "Helluva Zoo" is a guitar-driven rocker until it's time for "The Clockmaker", the more compact riffing and drumming change the direction again and in "Q&K" they have invited Jancy Buffington (MØAA) to add some of her dreamy vocals on the track and wow! Her voice really boosts the tune. The album closes up with "Snake Eat Snake", a drumming beat and a softer vocal line that almost masses out the record. This is really great work from these Italians, I do Highly recommend "Vyvyd" for anyone of likes marvelous and well-creating melodies and has their heart close to psych, then this babe will follow you.

Void Of Sleep - Unfair Judgement

Italian progressive sludge rockers VOID OF SLEEP did release their new album "Metaphora" on March 27th via Aural Music. Forged in Ravenna, Italy, in 2010, VOID OF SLEEP – conjure a cosmic amalgam of stoned-out, progressive sludge rock where epic rhythms melt into bottom-heavy doom breakdowns, complex time signatures, and psychedelia.

In support of the album, they have released an amazing new video for "Unfair Judgement", see and hear it below. The video is a complex, and emotional story. The video stars Starring Edo Tagliavini and Fausto Fori, was filmed by Gerardo Lamattina & cinematography by Gerardo Lamattina Film, with editing by Edo Talgiavini. It was written and directed by Edo Tagliavini and Gerardo Lamattina.

Black Rainbows - High To Hell

Since the release of their debut album, "Twilight in the Desert", in 2007, Roma rockers BLACK RAINBOWS have become one of the most essential acts in Europe’s heavy underground. Messa - Leah

The Italian MESSA plays an evoking doom metal with a dark jazz twist. Deliciously haunting female vocals, rhodes piano and 70’s fuzz guitars combine to conjure a sound that is all of their own. It's like a mix between a doomy JEX THOTH with BOHREN UND DER CLUB OF GORE atmosphere, topped with URFAUST and John Coltrane, interesting, hell yeah.

The band has moved from the droning occult doom of their first LP "Belfry" to a new, darker and more atmospheric approach clearly showcased in their new record "Feast for Water", a concept album centered on the introspective, symbolic and ritual features of the liquid element.

The Italian 4-piece band MESSA emerged on the first day of 2014. The extreme diversity of their musical background immediately proved to be essential in the construction of the band’s sound: Prog, Black Metal, Punk, Dark Ambient, jazz, Blues and Doom. all those influences have been channeled into a sonic cauldron that the band defines “Scarlet Doom”

Psychedelic Witchcraft - Rising On The Edge

PSYCHEDELIC WITCHCRAFT was born by the hands of the ancients gods of Blues and Doom, living through the imaginary of Occult and Witchcraft, with psychedelic colors and emotions. Inspired by the sounds and the pictures of an almost lost Era.

PSYCHEDELIC WITCHCRAFT was formed in 2015 led by Italian singer Virginia Monti as a the main songwriter. Her vocals has a mesmerising, smokey snarl feeling along with the bluesy and rocky guitarist Jacopo Fallai. The rythm section consist of the bass player Riccardo Giuffrè and the drummer Mirko Buia.

Elevators to the Grateful Sky - Cape Yawn

"Cape Yawn" is the Second album by Palermo, Sicily rockers ELEVATORS TO THE GRATEFUL SKY

With "Cape Yawn" sees the band expand their sound to incorporate influences from the world of alternative rock and set themselves apart from the "stoner rock" crowd. The Italian band are sounding even hungrier than before. Heavy, psychedelic, dark and beautiful, "Cape Yawn" captures the sound of four young and diverse musicians determined to make their mark.

Formed by friends Sandro Di Girolamo (Ex-UNDEAD CREEP) and Giuseppe Ferrara – both of whom cut their teeth as the brutal (and now defunct) death metal set Omega – ELEVATORS TO THE GRATEFUL SKY pull together and package a diverse range of influences from each band member’s distinct experience. Joined by Bonham-worshipping drummer Giulio Scavuzzo and guitarist Giorgio Trombino the band is a pressure cooker filled to the brim with psychedelic metal, doom, classic and groove-laden rock.

Serving their early days in their native Palermo, it didn’t take long for their EP to find its way onto the desk of Swedish label Transubstans Records who jumped at the chance to release their debut album "Cloud Eye" in 2013. An out-and-out foray into the darkened days of early grunge and straight up heavy 70s rock and roll, fast forward to "Cape Yawn" and the band has developed even further. Complimenting and drawing on influences as diverse as DANZIG, FU MANCHU and legendary alt rockers MORPHINE (the song ‘Laura’ on "Cape Yawn" is dedicated to the band’s lead singer Mark Sandman) to galvanize their songwriting talents, ELEVATORS TO THE GRATEFUL SKY produce something entirely of their own making. It’s an album that will keep audiences guessing and leave no rock lover wanting.

"Cape Yawn" was released on 11th March 2016 on HeviSike Records.

Ape Skull - A is for Ape

APE SKULL is an Italian trio consisting of Pierpaolo Pastorelli (bass), Fulvio Cartacci (guitar) and Giuliano Padroni (drums and lead vocal).

APE SKULL - formerly COLORSOUND - was formed in 2008 and the band immediately started performing live with cover tracks such as Children's Heritage (BLOODROCK), Free and Easy (MINERAL WATER), I Got No Time (ORANGE PEEL), Driver (DAMNATION OF ADAM BLESSING) etc. This would only serve to mature the band's own sound with a new creative drive in a genre they already embraced in previous bands. Right from the start, the band also includes original songs, which are never recorded nor published. The first, self titled, album (Ape Skull) was released in 2013 by Heavy Psych Sounds. The record is published on vinyl and CD and it's reviews appear in many magazines and websites dedicated to Rock music. In May 2015 the band released their second album "Fly Camel Fly", on H.P.S., with 8 original songs and their cover of "Driver" from DAMNATION OF ADAM BLESSING, printed on vinyl and cd.

The music is very classic with vibes from Jimi Hendrix to the CREAM.

Zu - Goodnight, Civilization

Stockholm during the terrorist attack fills newspaper headlines today. Four dead after lorry crashes into crowds of people in Stockholm and serval wounded. Me and the rest of Sweden are completely shocked at what has happened. That little Sweden, so peacefully and calmly, basically never happens anything, is subject to something as this is almost indescribable. Mourning for those who lose life for a maniac's action.

What to play on a day like this, well as this is a messy world right now so the Italian instrumental experimental music band ZU from Rome will suit fine with the tune "Goodnight, Civilization".

Hailing from Ostia, a town near Rome, ZU are an atypical trio made of drums, electric bass, baritone saxophone and electronics. Formed in Rome in 1997, they began as composers and players for theatre performances. The band is composed of three members: Luca Mai on baritone saxophone, Massimo Pupillo on bass and Tomas Järmyr on drums. ZU have released fourteen albums, including two live album and two splits, and played in festivals in Europe, America, Asia and Africa.

In the running for the title of 'the world's hardest working band', ZU have performed over 2000 shows throughout Europe, US, Canada, Asia, Russia, Mexico and even Africa, touring with the likes of Mike Patton (as the Zu/Patton quartet), sharing the stage with FAITH NO MORE, FANTôMAS, THE MELVINS, LIGHTNING BOLT, SONIC YOUTH, THE EX, etc.. They have also collaborated with a vast number of musicians including Mike Patton, THE MELVINS, DÄLEK, Jim O' Rourke, FM EINHEIT (EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN), Peter Brötzmann, Eugene S. Robinson (OXBOW), Steve MacKay (THE STOOGES), THE EX, Thurston Moore, Stephen O Malley, Damo Suzuki (CAN), Mats Gustafsson, NoMeansNo, Joe Lally (FUGAZI).

Although difficult to define, ZUs style could be characterised as a fusion of math rock, heavy metal and noise rock. The music is instrumental, and features virtuosic drumming, powerful bass and distorted saxophone.

One constant element in ZUs music is collaboration, and many of the band's albums are billed as collaborations with a guest musician (such as Mike Patton, Buzz Osbourne, Mats Gustafsson and Nobukazu Takemura). Often, a collaborator will join them at live performances as well. Members of the band also collaborate with other musical projects, most of which exist only as live performances.

The band are members of the Italian folk-jazz group ARDECORE.

Megatherium - Fly High

Coming from over 15 years of different music genres in many bands of Verona, Italy (Aneurysm, Gen Marrone, Mr. Wilson, Lokomotive, Elicotrema), the four members of MEGATHERIUM joined 4 years ago to provide unique stoner doom riffing, heavy distortion and a strong metal attitude, inspired by bands as SLEEP, DOWN, CONAN and CAVITY.

"Superbeast" is the sum of three years of composition and live-shows. A gigantic creature, emerging from the darkest abyss, evoked by low-tuning music, tons of decibels, heavy riffings and obsessive sounds. "Superbeast" collects both the earliest stoner influences and the most recent psych-doom compositions. Lyrics deal with apocalypse, destruction, reborn, sin, redemption, good and evil. Black Rainbows - The Hunter

Since they formed eleven years ago in Roma, Italian trio BLACK RAINBOWS have established themselves as one of the most active fuzz-fueled rock acts in Europe, with four albums, a remarkable handful of EPs (including a split record with L.A.'s space rockers Farflung) and countless tours and festival appearances across the continent. Blending the drive and swagger of 70's hard rock with the sun-baked thickness of 90's stoner rock, BLACK RAINBOWS have managed to create their own sound imprint, that could be described as "HAWKWIND, MC-5 and NEBULA crashing cars in the middle of the Mojave desert". Closely following with their highly acclaimed effort "Hawkdope", the band have just deliver another tasty piece of their fuzzy cake with fifth full-length "Stellar Prophecy", an album that should drop in the mail box any day now. More about it later on.

DGM - Trust

DGM ("Diego Gianfranco Maurizio", after the founding members) is an Italian metal band. They originally formed in 1994 as an instrumental band. Luciano Regoli, formerly of Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno, soon joined as lead singer. Their first official release was the self-produced mini CD Random Access Zone but the full album came out in November ‘97: Change Direction. The album was well received in Italy, Germany, Finland, and Denmark, which prompted them to start an Italian tour that gave the band a reputation as one of the most promising progressive Italian acts in those years.

Until today the band have release 8 studio album and toured all over the world.

Todays tune "Trust" is taken from the eight studio album "Momentum", following the critically acclaimed Synthesis (2010) and hundreds of shows that brought their music to audiences all around the world, including a successful tour with American progressive giants Symphony X in 2011. Momentum represents the full stylistic maturity of a band now on top of its game, collecting 11 new songs made of beautiful melodies, classy arrangements and top notch musicianship. To add an extra value to an already astonishing album, DGM have tapped legendary singer Russell Allen (Symphony X, Adrenaline Mob) to guest on the opening track Reason, and Norwegian guitar virtuoso Jorn Viggo Lofstad (Pagan's Mind) to contribute with a solo on the track Chaos. Momentum; was recorded, mixed and mastered by the band's own guitarist and celebrated producer Simone Mularoni at Domination Studios in San Marino, Italy.

Cadaveria - Death Vision

The Italian extreme metal band Cadaveria was formed in April 2001, forged by the erstwhile Opera IX personnel Cadaveria and Flegias, (a.k.a. Marçelo Santos), the latter reverting back to his real name. The band signed to Scarlet Records for the opening 2002 album The Shadows' Madame. Cadaveria and bassist Killer Bob would also be operational as singer for Industrialists DyNAbyte.

Cadaveria's second album, Far Away from Conformity released in early 2004, was recorded and mixed at Capitan Woofer Studios. In early 2007 the band joined Season of Mist and released In Your Blood in May 2007.

The fourth album Horror Metal was released in January 2012 and it's from that album we find todays tune. The band has elements of thrash, death, black, gothic and symphonic metal.

Circus 2000 - I Just can't stay

Hepp, one week has passed and then it was Sunday again and that means it's time to present a classic. This time we head to Italy, where we find a band who performs a elaborate psychedelic music that switches from soft moods to rapid passages, sometimes having a little folkish influence. It might cause weirdness at the first time, but it kind of grows on you as you get used to their sound.

Circus 2000, from Turin, were formed in 1970 and released late that year both their first album and single (containing Italian versions of two songs from the LP). The album had no line-up references on the cover, and many people at the time thought they were an English or American band. It contains ten songs, with a very short running time, with strong californian psych influence and the beautiful female voice of Silvana Aliotta above all. The vocal is a bit similar in features like Grace Slick, singer, Jefferson Airplane.

Both albums by Circus 2000 are now rare and expensive, probably pressed in small quantities. All their production came on RiFi label. Circus 2000 has a distinctive single matt black cover with fluorescent red/orange/green design. The same picture that appears on it was also used for the first three singles. Three tracks from this album appeared on singles, but in a different Italian-sung version, these were I am the witch (Io la strega), I can't believe (Pioggia sottile), Must walk forever (Ho regalato i capelli). Second album An escape from a box came in a gatefold laminated sleeve.

Counterfeits exist for both albums, pressed in late 80's, but these are easily recognised due to the very bootleg-looking white labels (originals have the black RiFi label with rainbow coloured rim). They have also been reissued by Akarma, with the CD versions containing extra tracks: the first album contains the four italian-sung songs issued on single at the time, while the reissue of An escape from a box has been enriched with two unreleased tracks, Dove va la mia gente and L'ultimo paese, both also on the Boxing circus mini-LP. Even the 2010 CD reissues by BTF contain the same bonus tracks. An escape from a box has been reissued again on vinyl in 2012 by the Halidon label.
