Paul Leary - Born Stupid

BUTTHOLE SURFERS guitarist Paul Leary waited 30 years to express his dark humor and carnival sounds once again in a new solo album. Leary’s first album released in 1991, "The History Of Dogs", launched his solo musical career from the BUTTHOLE SURFERS, combining his personal taste with a nuanced flare of woke ideology stemmed from modern society.

Thirty years may seem like an oddly excessive length of time between albums, but that’s apropos, as nearly all the highlights of Leary’s legendary career have been odd and excessive.

Leary is best known as guitarist/vocalist for the infamous psychedelic noise rock band BUTTHOLE SURFERS. The BUTTHOLE SURFERS’ aggressively surrealist recordings and live shows have become mythology in the world of underground music. The headline of a 2016 profile in Vice magazine summed this legacy up neatly, stating the “BUTTHOLE SURFERS Were the Epitome of Every Hell-Raising Rock 'n' Roll Legend You Ever Heard.”

BUTTHOLE SURFERS’ work was often squarely focused on the manipulation of sounds and textures, and Paul Leary's "Born Stupid" is heavily rooted in the craft of song, and the record’s finely structured musical landscapes work to support the stories being sung.

The connection between "Born Stupid" and vintage BUTTHOLE SURFERS’ music is not just stylistic. Longtime fans of Leary’s work will be pleased by the presence of a couple radically reworked interpretations of BUTTHOLE SURFERS-era material, including a giddily demented singalong version of the "The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey’s Grave.”

According to Leary, there was no grand vision behind the conception of Born Stupid. “I wasn’t planning on making another album, but over the years songs kept popping into my head. So I figured I might as well record them.” Leary has seized a ripe cultural moment to send this music out to the world, as "Born Stupid" speaks effectively to the damaged state of contemporary U.S. culture. There’s no better example than the album’s title track, a perfect anthem for the modern American age. “With so much strife and peril in this world I’d like to help make things better. But, instead, I had to be born stupid,” Leary croons in a warped country drawl, evoking the voice of Lee Hazlewood as sung through a cancer kazoo. Throughout the album Leary is joined by drummer Josh Freese, known for his work with a range of artists, including THE VANDALS, GUNS N’ ROSES, and DEVO.

It’s important to note that "Born Stupid" will be the first release on the newly relaunched incarnation of Shimmy-Disc, the influential independent record label founded by producer/musician and underground music impresario Kramer in 1987. Kramer revived Shimmy-Disc for his 2020 tenure as Joyful Noise Recordings’ Artist in Residence. Leary and Kramer have enjoyed a long collaborative relationship. “I’ve known Kramer since the early 1980’s when he was playing for Shockabilly,” Leary shared. “I was a big fan and we met when Shockabilly played in Austin, Texas. Then later on the BUTTHOLE SURFERS were without a bass player, and Kramer offered to play bass for us on a European tour. We’ve been friends ever since.”

Night Beats - Outlaw R&B

New week, time for the first "Record Of The Week" after the short review holiday. NIGHT BEATS, the Texas-born brainchild of Danny Lee Blackwell, did release their fifth full-length album "Outlaw R&B" on June 4th, 2021 via Fuzz Club. Made during the height of the California wildfires (where Danny now resides), rioting in the streets, and a nation in lockdown, "Outlaw R&B" deals in psychedelic and R&B-infused garage-rock and raucous technicolor rock’n’roll sound that’s “bathed in post-apocalyptic bliss”.

The album arrives following the 2019 and fourth "Myth Of A Man" LP (produced by Dan Auerbach of THE BLACK KEYS and released by Heavenly Recordings) as well as last year’s ‘That’s All You Got’ 7”. The other album now behind them are their self-titled 2011 debut, 2013’s "Sonic Bloom" and 2016’s "Who Sold My Generation".

NIGHT BEATS have garnered a reputation as one of the finest purveyors of contemporary rock’n’roll hedonism around.

"Outlaw R&B" is a marvelous album that gives a little of everything, picks with clean fingernails from psych-rock, garage, outlaw country, R&B, and blues-rock and it's hard to stop listening to it. His vocals are very hypnotic and the rhythms he creates are like a psychedelic drug. It’s a gorgeous batch of tunes that perfectly balances on the line without getting cheezy or over-made. An album that is riotous, acid-fried rock’n’roll to lose your head to and leave this world for almost 40 mins and eleven guitar-heavy tunes, each wearing magic and spellbinding hooks. "Outlaw R&B" is made with a big heart and a happy soul!

Khruangbin - Friday Morning

It's Friday so why not something different, a "Friday Morning" love song, written and recorded at the remote farm in Burton, Texas where KHRUANGBIN got its start. To commemorate the song, the band asked their closest friends and family to record messages of love to each band member. The music video is a portrait of the band hearing these audio recordings for the first time, capturing on film the emotions one feels when they hear just how loved they are; a poignant and heartfelt expression in a time where, as a collective whole, we need to hear and express love more than ever.

KHRUANGBIN is a three-piece band from Texas, formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - KHRUANGBIN is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool.

"Dream On" is a power ballad by AEROSMITH from their 1973 debut self-titled album. Written by lead singer Steven Tyler, this song was their first major hit and became a classic rock radio staple. Released in June 1973 and got to be a big hit for the band. "Dream On" was first played live in Mansfield, Connecticut, at the Shaboo Inn. In a 2011 interview, Tyler reminisced about his father, a Juilliard-trained musician. He recalled lying beneath his dad's piano as a three-year-old listening to him play classical music. "That's where I got that Dream On chordage", he said.

Tyler says that this was the only song on the band's first album where he used his real voice. He was insecure about how his voice sounded on tape, so for the other songs, he tried to sing a bit lower and sound more like soul artists, such as James Brown. The song is also famous for its building climax to showcase Tyler's trademark screams.

In the authorized Stephen Davis band memoir Walk This Way, Tyler speaks at length about the origins of the songs:

"The music for 'Dream On' was originally written on a Steinway upright piano in the living room of Trow-Rico Lodge in Sunapee, maybe four years before Aerosmith even started. I was seventeen or eighteen. ... It was just this little thing I was playing, and I never dreamed it would end up as a real song or anything. ... It's about dreaming until your dreams come true."

Power Trip - When Things Go Wrong

The Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 1980s was a crazy, twisted island of misfit toys. All the kids who were too ugly, too smart, too psychotic, or simply too weird to fit in a world dominated by preppies and guidos found themselves part of the hardcore scene, with CBGB at its epicenter. Astoria's OUTBURST was one of several dozen "second wave" bands who grew up on originators AGNOSTIC FRONT, KRAUT, MURPHY'S LAW and others. Like their friends in LEEWAY, GORILLA BISCUITS, and RAW DEAL - they took elements of crossover metal and fused it with punk rock to create a signature sound.

During their short life, OUTBURST recorded a demo, appeared on two legendary NYHC compilations, and one EP. Nobody in the band thought their music would have any impact beyond what they were living at the time.

The crazy shit is, 30 years later- OUTBURST still matters to a new crop of kids, from all around the world. To celebrate that 30 years, Blackout! Records are re-releasing an ultra-limited, expanded LP edition of their "Miles To Go EP", as well as a limited LP compilation of the best new punk and hardcore bands covering their songs, entitled "Hot Sh!t Attitude". It includes covers from a wide array of bands such as POWER TRIP and HIGHER POWER – both of whom were already covering Outburst in their live sets.

Since releasing "Nightmare Logic" in 2017, Texas thrashers POWER TRIP have only given us one new song, "Hornet's Nest", and if you're looking for more you'll have to wait a little while longer. A tune that we haven't played yet, maybe it will come later on, the pile of music is pretty high atm :)

The song is the lead track on the forthcoming OUTBURST covers compilation, "Hot Shit Attitude", which will be released on Jan. 31 2020. POWER TRIP take is faithful to the original. With one listen, it's clear that OUTBURST was one of the groups who wielded massive influence over the rising thrash band's hardcore-crossed sound.

Khruangbin - White Gloves

Monday and it's time for the annual Way Out West week again.

I did my first Way out West festival 2008, the 2nd year it was running and since then I have been in Slottsskogen, Gothenburg for almost two weeks. Nowadays it is an absolutely wonderful time in the park, fantastic colleagues, people around the organization, sponsors, exhibitors and restaurangs, you basically know everyone there and the job goes incredibly smoothly, during the year we have worked out all the shortcomings and done most very simple, almost like a dance during a balmy summer evening.

So this week we are going to play some music of the artist that plays on the festival this year. Then we sum it up next week for a couple of days of bands that I have discover and perhaps a story or two. Enjoy!

Following the recent re-releases of Mark’s solo albums "The Silent Treatment", "The Value Of Decay" and "Brief Sensuality & Western Violence", his brand new full-length "The Blue Bird" underlines the multi-instrumentalist's broad musical scope, this time guiding you through the elusive nature of happiness.

Mark Deutrom is a guitarist, bassist, composer, songwriter, and producer.

Mark Deutrom studied composition at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA . There he attended seminars with such composers as John Cage, Lou Harrison, Morton Feldman, Aaron Copland, and Morton Subotnick.

In 1986 Deutrom co founded Alchemy Records in San Francisco, CA. During his time at the label he produced a record for his own band, CLOWN ALLEY, as well as records for SACRILEGE, MELVINS, RKL, and NEUROSIS.

In 1993 Deutrom was invited to play bass in the MELVINS. He was in the band from 1993-1998, and played on and contributed material to the albums "Prick", "Stoner Witch", "Stag", "Honky", " and additional releases. During his time with the band they toured with TOOL, NIRVANA, NINE INCH NAILS, KISS and RUSH among others.

In 2006 he was invited to collaborate with SUNNO))) on various live dates in the USA and Europe.

Deutrom has released various solo projects and continues to produce projects for others.

The band Bellringer is the live vehicle for his music and currently features RL Hulsman on drums, Aaron Lack on drums, and Brian Ramirez on bass and vocals.

In 2017 Mark Deutrom signed a licensing agreement with French heavy music label Season of Mist to reissue his catalog, and also for new music beginning with the album "The Blue Bird" released on January 4 2019.

Destroyer Of Light - Nyx

DESTROYER OF LIGHT play music that could be categorized as doom metal, they are very much a rock band.

Having just recently signed to Argonauta Records for a new album in 2019, Austin doomers DESTROYER OF LIGHT follow their 2017 long-player, "Chamber of Horrors" , with a further auditory assault in the lumbering EP "Hopeless".

Formed in 2012 from constantly boiling musical cauldron that is Austin, TX, DESTROYER OF LIGHT has taken a straight forward approach to tempering the disparate and harmonious parts of their influences into a total sum of slow motion tidal heaviness that bows to no altar but that of the riff. With the smoky flavors of hazed out doom and the stomping cadence of rock’s heyday, the band both tickles and deafens the ears with the theatrical flashes of MERCYFUL FATE, the ominous tones of ELECTRIC WIZARD, and the ferociously feral feedback of a SLEEP dirge.

The Well - Death And Consolation

New week, it's time for "Record Of The Week"

"Death And Consolation" is the new album by the Austin, TX power Trio THE WELL.

The band once again recorded with long-time producer/engineer Chico Jones at Estuary Studio in 2018, who has turned the knobs for all three of their albums (Jones engineered the band’s debut album "Samsara" with producer Mark Deutrom (MELVINS, SUN O)))) in 2013.

"Death And Consolation" is a more personal album says the guitarist/vocalist Ian Graham. And by knowing that you listen with a different type of ears and can hear that there is a lot of depression and darkness over the lyrics that can weight up the album title. The sound follows the already made path that THE WELL has created over the last two albums, 70's psych and proto-metal, with a vibe of JOY DIVISION and BLUE CHEER. "Death And Consolation" have a lot of heaviness with down-tuned guitars that give a monstrous sound on the album, fat bassline and well played drums along with great vocals. The album has a play time of 42 mins divided into 9 tight and concise tunes that make this album a lovely listening moment.

The albums open up with a Sitar on the tune "Sabbah", heavy and doomish guitar, drony vocals, powerful drumming and a catchy chorus with a matchless hymns makes this an excellent start of the album. "Raven" forces forward with ping pong riffs. To the more half paced SABBATH alike tunes like the powerful "Death Song" or the even slower haunting "Freedom Above". The gothic parts can you hear cleary on "Cup Of Peace". There are a few lumbering and spooky tunes like "Eyes Of A God" and the riff theme "This Is How The World Ends" that will rise the fear. Or just take the heavy horror piece "Act II" that is just a brilliant piece of melodic doom. The album closes with "Endless Night", a really dark tune with heavy distorted riffs, church bells and haunting melody.

"Death And Consolation" were released on April 26th, 2019 via Riding Easy Records.

Sum: Can it be much better than this, spooky noise doom at it's best.

The band is known for blending global music influences, classic soul, dub and psychedelia. Today's tune "Maria También", the first single from the latest album "Con Todo El Mundo", tells the story of Iranian women prior to the revolution of 1979. Celebrating their creativity, freedom and ability to express themselves, the video shows a side of women in the Middle East that often isn't seen in the Western world.

The women in the video are all part of a large network of artists, singers, dancers and songwriters who have been either exiled or silenced since the revolution. With the video, KHRUANGBIN hopes to bring these remarkable women back into the spotlight and honour the artistry of silenced women everywhere.

Brian Wright - Accordion

Brian Wright is an American singer-songwriter from Waco, TX. His debut album, Dog Ears was released in 2006, quickly followed by a sophomore effort, Bluebird in 2007. After signing with Sugar Hill Records, Wright has recorded two more albums, 2011's "House on Fire" and 2013's "Rattle Their Chains".

For Brian Wright, life as a traveling troubadour began in Waco, Texas near the highway and the trains where he found music at the age of 13. That is where his father took a job that required a great deal of travel, making the family VW van Wright’s first crib. He started as a drummer but found the guitar more to his liking (though he can play almost any instrument with keys or strings). Wright spent several years playing in Austin and Dallas bars before moving to Los Angeles in 2002 with his drummer. There they formed the band "Brian Wright and the Waco Tragedies". Several different music styles later, Wright settled on an infusion of folk, country, and rock music while defying all three. The album Dog Ears, in 2006, was his first release, followed soon thereafter by the album Bluebird in 2007. The band began to develop quite a following. Consequently, Wright feels most at home when on the road, and this movement has helped shaped Wright’s sense of bare-boned lyrics and achingly beautiful songs that seem both distant and intimate at the same time.

Witchcryer - Cry Witch

WITCHCRYER are a 4-piece old-school doom metal band hailing from Austin, Texas.

Their music is infused with heavy rock of BLACK SABBATH, BLUE OYSTER CULT and the doom vain from WITCHFINDER GENERAL and ST. VITUS.

WITCHCRYER was created by guitarist Jason Muxlow during his time with Chicago doom band, (EARTHEN GRAVE). Javi Moctezuma joined in 2015 and later that year, Suzy Bravo (HOGBITCH) and Marilyn (PILLCRUSHER/LAS CRUCES) joined.

"The Preying Kind" demo was recorded and released as a demo on bandcamp. In May 2017, the full length album, "Cry Witch" was pressed and sold as an independent limited cd and digital Bandcamp release. The band played its first show on April 2016.

WITCHCRYERs debut album, "Cry Witch" was released in May 2017. Nine songs of classic doom, produced by the band & BRANT SANKEY (recording & mix engineer).

WITCHCRYER consists of:

Nothing More - Go To War

San Antonio, Texas alternative rockers NOTHING MORE released their fifth studio album "The Stories We Tell Ourselves", which was released on September 15, 2017.

The lead single from the album is "Go To War", a tune were we can hear the showcasing singer Jonny Hawkins's dynamic vocal range over a mix of electronic and organic instrumentation.

Hawkins, the band's primary writer, explained:

"I was going through the end of an eight-year relationship. I was dealing with some stuff, and I got off the phone, and I was angrier than I've ever been. I was never one to yell a lot or get into super-big, dramatic fights or anything like that; I'm pretty laid back. But I'd gotten to that point, was on the edge, and we had it out with each other over the phone, and I was just fuming. At the end of eight-years of stuff that had kind of built up – I looked at guitarist Mark Vollunga, and I was like, 'Let’s get in the studio now! Play that guitar part you were playing yesterday.' And so Mark started to play it, and I just started singing stuff, and it was about 30 minutes later that the bulk of that song was done. So, some of them came out quick like that and were unusual for us

NOTHING MORE was formed in 2003, the band spent much of the 2000s recording independent albums and struggling to maintain a steady lineup or attract record label interest.

Mothership - High Strangeness

Monday, New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"High Strangeness" is the third full-length album by the Texas, Dallas trio MOTHERSHIP. The album was released March 17th.

"High Strangeness" is a solid release from the guys where they deliver a record with an seasoned sound, great melodies, heavy riffing and very good vocals. Atmospheric stoner rock is mixed up with dusty sand boogie psychedelia and melodic riffing like the opening tune and the title track. "Ride The Sun" have a more classic upbeat sounding, excellent guitar tripping and great vocals. "Midnight Express" is a more heavier piece with driven fuzzy riffs, sounds almost like MASTODON meets KISS. "Crown Of Lies" is a old school rocker with galloping riffs (hello HEART) and a guitar driven midpart that is very melodic. "Helter Skelter" reminds of old HAWKWIND, an 70's hard rocker. "Eternal Trip" is a peaceful instrumental tune, the album ballad that hovering over the other tunes and stands out. "Wise Man", dirty riffs with a light BLACK SABBATH and ALLMAN BROTHERS touch but in more old school metal way. The album ends with the upbeat fuzzed out rocker "Speed Dealer" that breads KYUSS, a great ending tune.

Sum: "High Strangeness" is a solid album that anyone that like fresh 70's style of rock should not miss this!

BLACK PISTOL FIRE is a high-octane rock duo based out of Austin, Texas by way of Toronto, Canada; composed of Kevin McKeown on guitar/lead vocals and Eric Owen on drums. Drawing inspiration from blues, R&B and rock greats such as LED ZEPPELIN, CHUCK BERRY, NIRVANA, BUDDY HOLLY and MUDDY WATERS, BPF’s gritty and dynamic performances are fueled by undeniable musicianship.
