Stone Sour - Song #3

STONE SOUR have released a new muscular video and single for the tune "Song #3" taken from the band's "Hydrograd "album that comes out June 30th. STONE SOUR will tour the U.S., Australia and Europe after the album's release, see the dates below.

STONE SOUR is an American heavy metal band formed in Des Moines, Iowa in 1992, performing for five years, before disbanding in 1997. They reunited in 2000 and since 2006, the group has consisted of Corey Taylor (lead vocals, guitar), Josh Rand (guitar) and Roy Mayorga (drums). Longtime members Joel Ekman (drums, percussion), Shawn Economaki (bass guitar), and Jim Root (guitar) left the group in 2006, 2011, and 2014 respectively.

To date, STONE SOUR have released five studio albums "Stone Sour" (2002); "Come What(ever) May" (2006); "Audio Secrecy" (2010); "House of Gold & Bones – Part 1" (2012) and "House of Gold & Bones – Part 2" (2013). They also released a digital live album, "Live in Moscow", in 2007. Their upcoming album, "Hydrograd", releases in June 2017. It is their first album to feature guitarist Christian Martucci and bassist Johnny Chow since each joining the band in 2014.

The "Song #3" video was directed by Ryan Valdez. The video-within-a-video conceit begins with lead singer Corey Taylor walking onto a movie set. He grabs a long blond wig and hops onstage with his band, who are wearing oddly crisp white outfits. Taylor keeps changing clothes throughout the clip, but his search for the right outfit never interferes with his performance.

"Song #3" moves in eruptions, as Taylor declares his love in lines like, "I would run into the storm/ Just to keep you here with me." Meanwhile, the band thrashes furiously behind him.

The Night Flight Orchestra - Amber Galactic

Monday, New Week! Time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Amber Galactic", THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRAs (NFO), third album was released on 19 May 2017.

Suddenly my speakers streams classic melodic rock pop with a light glamdisco feeling, my smile gets bigger and I find my self dancing in the living room. Think T.REX, KISS, TOTO, REO SPEEDWAGON and some glittery guitar and the bulky 70s and 80s effects, there you have "Amber Galactic", an totally amazing album.

"Amber Galactic" is a very fun record to play, it's old but very modern. It's very well made, both song and lyrics wise, the production have a very good quality.

The album kicks of with the galloping opener "Midnight Flyer", a real catchy killer tune and the pumping "Star Of Rio", catchy verses and choruses of "Gemini", amazing start of the album. The we get a cool 80's bass line on "Jennie", mid-tempo monster filler like "Josephine" to the classic 80's soundtrack rock "Something Mysterious". The grooving KISS alike "Domino" the up tempo dueling tune "Space Whisperer" to the disco beat in "Saturn in Velvet"

Sum:

THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA is here to set you free, to invite you to enjoy music in whatever form it is presented. For this particular journey, we’d like you to follow us into space, but who knows where we’ll go next! After entering the NFO universe, you won’t ever be the same!”

The band consist of members of SOILWORK (Singer Björn Strid), ARCH ENEMY (Bassplayer Sharlee D'Angelo) and MEAN STREAK (Guitarist David Andersson and Drummer Jonas Källsbäck) – bands who have a much heavier sound than NFO!

Today’s tune "Gemini" from THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA's third album, Amber Galactic, out May 19th.

Paul Simon - Mother and Child Reunion

Sunday, Mothers day, time for a classic.

"Mother and Child Reunion" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Paul Simon. It was the lead single from his second self-titled studio album (1972), released on Columbia Records. It was released as a single on February 5, 1972. It was one of the earliest songs by a white musician to feature prominent elements of reggae.

The song was recorded at Dynamic Sounds Studios at Torrington Bridge in Kingston, Jamaica, with Jimmy Cliff's backing group. Guitarist Huks ("Hux") Brown and bass guitarist Jackie Jackson were also long-time members of TOOTS & THE MAYTALS. Cissy Houston sang background vocals on the recording. The song was recorded before writing lyrics, which was unusual for Simon. He had previously hoped to make "Why Don't You Write Me"— a song recorded with Art Garfunkel on Bridge over Troubled Water—to sound like a Jamaican song, but felt it ended up sounding like a "bad imitation." Simon was instructed by the musicians on the differences among reggae, ska, and bluebeat. He felt awkward at first because he was "the only white guy there and I was American." Simon later overdubbed piano and vocals to the track back in New York.

The title has its origin in a chicken-and-egg dish called "Mother and Child Reunion" that Simon saw on a Chinese restaurant's menu. The song's lyrics were inspired by a pet dog that was run over and killed. It was the first death Simon personally experienced, and he began to wonder how he would react if the same happened to his wife at the time, Peggy Harper. "Somehow there was a connection between this death and Peggy and it was like Heaven, I don't know what the connection was," Simon told Rolling Stone in 1972.

James Benninghof wrote that Simon predicted the title event, the "mother and child reunion," while the second verse describes the effect of what happened on "the strange and mournful day," but without making clear what it was.

Today's tune "Mother and Child Reunion" is live from Webster Hall 6/6/2011. This tune is for you Thetania.

Rikard Sjöbloms Gungfly - He Held An Axe

You might know Rikard Sjöblom as the mutli-instrumentalist madman behind the microphone of the now-legendary BEARDFISH, who sang about everything from personal loss to dreams of sneaking into the backstreets of some sleazy '70s disco club. Wielding his keyboard like an 88-key progressive rock machine gun and a shoulder-slung guitar much in the same manner, Sjöblom truly was the face of the band. BEARDFISH came to an end in 2016, leaving room for new solo endeavors for Sjöblom.

With the same array of musical appendages, Sjöblom has carried on as a solo artist under the moniker GUNGFLY once more with his 2016 album “The Unbendable Sleep”, now followed by the new 2017 release "On Her Journey To The Sun", was released on InsideOutMusic on May 19th. Just like “The Unbendable Sleep” before, “On Her Journey To The Sun” features Sjöblom's incredible vocal range, intensely personal lyrics, signature sense of complex-yet-catchy keyboard melodies, and guitar work that spans the spectrum of folksy to downright face melting. Sjöblom comments:

“GUNGFLY was born out of necessity; songs came to life whenever there was downtime with BEARDFISH or if a song didn't quite fit within BEARDFISHs (otherwise quite broad and eclectic) frame of styles. I basically started recording songs, mainly pop-oriented material, but being the type of songwriter and musician I am some prog slipped through under the radar as well. With the break-up of BEARDFISH all of the prog-related material I write needed to go somewhere and GUNGFLY was ready and able for this step! Some background: I recorded what was to become the first GUNGFLY album between 2007-2008 and it was released in 2009. The name GUNGFLY is a Swedish word meaning unsecure ground, it came from a novel I read where it was used to describe that someone didn't have grounds to back up their statements, so I liked it and chose to call the project that! I've always been writing and recording lots of music and when I formed the live band to perform these songs for the first time I got to pick some of my oldest friends to play with and thankfully they wanted to be part of it! Petter and Rasmus Diamant (yes, they're brothers) on drums and bass have always been the backbone foundation in this line-up and sometimes we actually do gigs as the GUNGFLY trio. Sverker Magnusson has been behind the keys since the start and was recently joined by Martin Borgh too to be able to cover all of the keyboard work on the albums, so sometimes we do three keyboard players on stage at the same time! This is made possible by the fact that guitarist David Zackrisson (BEARDFISH) is in the band as well. Me then? I do what I've always done; sing, play guitars and a bunch of vintage keyboards (mainly Hammond organ) - and I have lots of fun :)” In addition to his solo work, Sjöblom is the most recent addition to English progressive titans Big Big Train, having performed keyboards, guitars, accordion, and backing vocals on the band's 2016 album “Folklore”.

Lineup on "On Her Journey To The Sun":

Rikard Sjöblom - vocals, acoustic and electric guitar
Petter Diamant - drums
David Zackrisson - lead guitar
Sverker Magnusson - piano
Rasmus Diamant - bass
Martin Borgh - Crumar organ

Today's tune "He Held an Axe", taken from the album "On Her Journey To The Sun". Written by Rikard Sjöblom. The Video was directed and produced by Peter Callow.

Sturgill Simpson - In Bloom

Sturgill Simpson makes one small but significant addition to the lyrics in his soulful cover of NIRVANA's "In Bloom" — after each "don't know what it means," he chimes in with his own "to love someone." While that idea may be implied in Kurt Cobain's original, it's a distinction made all the more poignant by the fact that Simpson recorded the song and his new album A Sailor's Guide to Earth especially for his young son.

"I'm never going to make anything other than a country record," says Simpson about his album "A Sailor's Guide to Earth". "I wanted a song on the album to capture that awkward stage in every young boy's life where they are searching for their place in the world," Simpson tells Rolling Stone Country. "One night while discussing the album with my wife, she asked, 'Well, what were you listening to when you were 13?' I remember in seventh or eighth grade, when "Nevermind" dropped, it was like a bomb went off in my bedroom. For me, that song has always summed up what it means to be a teenager, and I think it tells a young boy that he can be sensitive and compassionate — he doesn't have to be tough or cold to be a man."

The video for "In Bloom" depicts that loneliness and confusion of youth with the same stylish animation that powers Simpson's "Brace for Impact" video. While a dagger-toothed, hairy monster swirls below, a young man (with a cannon barrel where his head should be) tentatively tries to navigate a rowboat across this troubled sea. As the song explodes into an optimistic cascade of horns, the boy discovers the way to vanquish the monster is not with angry cannon fire but by radiating love. It's a realization as transformative as Simpson's rendering of the song — beneath all Nirvana's hormonal agitation, there's a hopeful resolution.

John Sturgill Simpson (born June 8, 1978) is an American country music and roots rock singer-songwriter. To date he has released three albums as a solo artist. He released two albums independently, High Top Mountain in 2013 and Metamodern Sounds in Country Music in 2014. His second album is notable for being nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Americana Album. His third studio album, "A Sailor's Guide to Earth", was released on Atlantic Records and was Simpson's first major-label release, later earning him Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards while also being nominated for Album of the Year.

Today's tune "In Bloom" is taken off Sturgill's new album - A Sailor's Guide To Earth. Directed By: Matt Mahurin. Written by NIRVANA frontman Kurt Cobain, the song addresses people outside of the underground music community who did not understand the band's message. Enjoy today's Thursday cover.

In Flames - Here Until Forever

The Swedes metalheads IN FLAMES have released a new absolutely stunning video "Here Until Forever" taken from the latest album "Battles".

Anders Friden coments the tune:

"Here Until Forever" was written for my son. He's eight years old. I have this piece here, "Come Clarity", which I wrote for my daughter when she was two. And he's seen that, and he asked all the time, 'Daddy, where's my song?' And I don't think I'd been ready to write something that would make him justice. But now… yeah, I was ready. So that one is, obviously, the most personal one, because it's very directed towards one person, for me. But I think the lyric is open for interpretation; it could be for anyone — someone that you love, or someone that you missed, or someone that you have a special bond with."

Asked if his son has heard "Here Until Forever" and what he thought of it, Anders said: "He heard it. I think he cried the first time [he listened to it], 'cause he was so proud: 'This is about me.' And it's an important track, because we… You know, we are away [from each other] many months a year, and we have a little thing, me and him, for how we connect… If he feels sad and he wants to contact me, then we have a certain thing that I taught him to… so he feels safe."

He continued:
"I think he's super proud of that song. And then he can tell his friends, 'This is my song.' Stuff like that."

Today's tune "Here Until Forever" from In Flames newest album "Battles". This stunning animated clip, directed by award-winning Mexican filmmaker Luis Téllez (Jacinta, La Noria and Fusilaron a la Virgen), is a masterclass in stop motion animation

Dan Reed Network - Save the World

DAN REED NETWORK’s latest record “"Fight Another Day”" marks the anticipated return of one of the most infectious and gifted bands to come out in the Melodic Rock World in the second part of the 80’s!

Formed originally in Portland, Oregon, the band began packing out local clubs from late 1984 through 1986 with their infectious mixture of hard rock, funk and soul. After releasing their EP ‘Breathless’ and having a top ten single on local radio, ‘Steal Me’, DRN signed to Polygram/Mercury Records. In the winter of 1987, the group released their self-titled debut album which was produced by Bruce Fairbairn (BON JOVI, AEROSMITH) and engineered/mixed by Mike Fraser in Vancouver, Canada. The first single, “Ritual” peaked at number 38 on the US Billboard Charts and became a staple of what became known as the ‘Funk Rock’ genre. The debut album received a wealth of positive reviews, not the least of which was a four-star write-up from the notoriously hard-to-please Rolling Stone Magazine.

DAN REED NETWORK’ went over to Europe to support the album and had legendary performances at the Marquee Club in London and the The Melody Club in Stockholm, which are still talked about to this day. While attending the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum induction ceremony in January 1989 in New York, Dan Reed met up with producer Nile Rodgers (Duran Duran, Madonna, David Bowie) which led to the creation of the second album “Slam”. Produced by Rodgers, it better represented the DAN REED NETWORK’ live sound and accelerated the band’s growing status in Europe. DAN REED NETWORK’ opened the European leg of BON JOVIs ‘New Jersey Tour’ in 1989 and THE ROLLING STONES’ European ‘Urban Jungle Tour’ in 1990. The DAN REED NETWORK’s third album ‘The Heat’, produced by Bruce Fairbairn in 1991, was their biggest success in the UK, mostly due to the single ‘Lover’ which was accompanied by a live video from Wembley Stadium filmed when they opened for THE ROLLING STONES’. Despite some success and disillusioned with the record business and all it’s trappings, the band eventually disbanded, much to the dismay of their supporters around the globe.

Fast forward to the 21st century and DAN REED NETWORK’ played their 25th anniversary reunion show on New Years Eve 2012 in their home town of Portland, Oregon, with all the original band members: Dan Reed, Dan Pred, Brion James, Melvin Brannon II and Blake Sakamoto. The members found it was incredibly fun being back together and consequently DAN REED NETWORK’ decided it was a good time to bring the band and the music back to Europe and performed three sold out shows in Stockholm at Debaser, outside of London at the Enchanted Festival and at the Diamond Rock Club in Northern Ireland in 2013.

Dan Reed says: “It's been 25 years since our last studio album "The Heat" was released, and to be honest, I never envisioned making another DAN REED NETWORK’ album despite countless people throughout the world encouraging us to do so. But with a mixture of fate and a collective of trusted friends and supporters in the business coming to the table, I am excited to say we are poised to release a brand new record entitled "Fight Another Day" in 2016 on Frontiers, home of many artists that we in fact admired back when we were first hitting the scene and before. Finally the stars aligned perfectly to have it all come together and make this album, and to have Derek Shulman, who originally singed DAN REED NETWORK’ to Polygram in 1987, once again being in our lives as our co-manager and A&R man, brings us full circle. As for the sound and approach of the album the band and I thought it would be a great experiment and interesting challenge to revisit what endeared the band to so many back in the day and deliver a rock record with funk and soul elements, strong melodies, but this time around incorporate even edgier lyrics while not losing sight that this release needed to be uplifting, infectious, and most of all, powerful when performed live. The title "Fight Another Day" represents the fact that after 25 years we were able to gravitate back to the passion we discovered playing together all those years ago, and battle once more!“ The band looks forward to the world's response to this new labor of love, and this testament to the bonds of friendship and musical chemistry!

Today's tune "Save the World" is taken from the latest album "Fight Another Day"

The Obsessed - Sacred

New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The mythos of THE OBSESSED returns with the fantastic milestone "Sacred". It's their first studio album in over 20 years. Led by legendary frontman Scott "Wino" Weinrich (SAINT VITUS, SPIRIT CARAVAN to name a few).

THE OBSESSED originally formed in 1976 and released three seminal stoner / doom albums in the early 90's, including "The Church Within" which has been hailed as one of the important records in the genre's history. Now, after reforming in 2016, the band has returned with renewed energy and purpose, sounding heavier and more relevant than ever before. The lineup consist of Wino’s longtime friend and former road crew member Brian Costantino (Drums) and Reid Raley (Bass & Vocals) and of course Scott "Wino” Weinrich (Guitar & Vocals).

"Sacred" kicks on with a remake of "Sodden Jackal", that was released on their 1999s album "Incarnate", here the tune have gotten a more deeper sound, much heavier and doomier, more powerful than ever, Wino's vocal is clearer and have a more punch. The tune got a new life indeed, a very good remake. "Punk Crusher" has a more classic hard rock approach, with a thundering chorus. The title song and today's tune "Sacred" has a more typical Wino layout, melodic and heavy. The record have a good mix between the styles of "Classic Rock", all from the light punkish "Haywire" and "Be The Night", the rocker "Razor Wire" to a more punchy radio rock friendly "Perseverance Of Futility" or the instrumental jam-oriented "Cold Blood". The THIN LIZZY cover "It's Only Money" is real heavy rocker were Wino sounds like an old Phil Lynott, cool version. The catchy, melancholic charm of "Stranger Things" is one if the hightlights with it's bluesy doom/rock groove. There are two bonus tracks on the deluxe version of the LP, the awesome nine minutes doomy "On So Long" with a amazing guitar work and the catchy classic rocker "Crossroader".

Deluxe Vinyl Version

Sum: "Sacred" is an extensive musical journey that is very fun to listen to.

Today's tune "Sacred" is the title track from the "Record Of The Week", enjoy!

Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Black Hole Sun" is a song by US rock band SOUNDGARDEN. Written by frontman Chris Cornell (R.I.P.), the song was released in 1994 as the third single from the band's fourth studio album Superunknown (1994). It is arguably the band's most recognizable and most popular song, and remains a well known song from the 1990s. The song topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, where it spent a total of seven weeks at number one. Despite peaking at number two on the Modern Rock Tracks, "Black Hole Sun" still finished as the number-one track of 1994 for that chart. It failed to hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart due to the rules of a physical/commercial release of the single at the time, but it still peaked at number 24 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and number nine on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. The song was included on SOUNDGARDENs 1997 greatest hits album A-Sides and appeared again on the 2010 compilation album Telephantasm.

Cornell said that he wrote the song in about 15 minutes. He used a Gretsch guitar to write the song, and commented, "I wrote the song thinking the band wouldn't like it—then it became the biggest hit of the summer." Cornell came up with the song while using a Leslie speaker. Guitarist Kim Thayil said that the Leslie speaker was perfect for the song as "it's very Beatlesque and has a distinctive sound. It ended up changing the song completely." Thayil said that the song "wasn't safe as milk, but it wasn't glass in someone's eye either. It was the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down. Now it's the 'Dream On' of our set." The song was performed in drop D tuning. Drummer Matt Cameron called the song "a huge departure". Credit is due to Michael Beinhorn and Brendan O'Brien, producer and recording engineer, respectively.

Regarding "Black Hole Sun", Cornell stated, "It's just sort of a surreal dreamscape, a weird, play-with-the-title kind of song." He also said that "lyrically it's probably the closest to me just playing with words for words' sake, of anything I've written. I guess it worked for a lot of people who heard it, but I have no idea how you'd begin to take that one literally." In another interview he elaborated further, stating, "It's funny because hits are usually sort of congruent, sort of an identifiable lyric idea, and that song pretty much had none. The chorus lyric is kind of beautiful and easy to remember. Other than that, I sure didn't have an understanding of it after I wrote it. I was just sucked in by the music and I was painting a picture with the lyrics. There was no real idea to get across." Commenting upon how the song was misinterpreted as being positive, Cornell said, "No one seems to get this, but 'Black Hole Sun' is sad. But because the melody is really pretty, everyone thinks it's almost chipper, which is ridiculous." When asked about the line, "Times are gone for honest men", Cornell said:

It's really difficult for a person to create their own life and their own freedom. It's going to become more and more difficult, and it's going to create more and more disillusioned people who become dishonest and angry and are willing to fuck the next guy to get what they want. There's so much stepping on the backs of other people in our profession. We've been so lucky that we've never had to do that. Part of it was because of our own tenacity, and part of it was because we were lucky.

Chris Cornell stated in a 2014 interview with Entertainment Weekly that the title came from something he heard on the news - he thought the anchor said "black hole sun," but he really was saying something else. Cornell started thinking about the phrase and decided to write a song around it, as he felt it was a thought-provoking title. He wrote the lyrics first, then composed the music based on the images he came up with.

Today's tune have the surreal and apocalyptic music video for "Black Hole Sun" was directed by Howard Greenhalgh, produced by Megan Hollister for Why Not Films (London, England), shot by Ivan Bartos, and features post-production work by 525 Post Production (Hollywood, California) and Soho 601 Effects (London). The video follows a suburban neighborhood and its vain inhabitants with comically exaggerated grins, which are eventually swallowed up when the Sun suddenly turns into a black hole, while the band performs the song somewhere in an open field. In the video, Cornell can be seen wearing a fork necklace given to him by Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon. In an online chat, the band stated that the video "was entirely the director's idea", and added, "Our take on it was that at that point in making videos, we just wanted to pretend to play and not look that excited about it." Thayil said that the video was one of the few SOUNDGARDEN videos the band was satisfied with.

The video was released in June 1994. After several weeks of airplay on MTV, a second version of the video was substituted containing more elaborate visual effects than the original, including the addition of a computer-generated black hole. The music video for "Black Hole Sun" became a hit on MTV and received the award for Best Metal/Hard Rock Video at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards. In 1995, it received the Clio Award for Alternative Music Video. The video is available on the CD-ROM Alive in the Superunknown.

In 1999, British alternative rock band SKUNK ANANSIE did a homage of the video for their single "Lately". The video was also directed by Greenhalgh.

The Ferrymen - Still Standing Up

THE FERRYMEN is a brand new project featuring guitarist Magnus Karlsson (PRIMAL FEAR, MAGNUS KARLSSONS FREE FALL) and vocalist Ronnie Romero (LORDS OF BLACK, RAINBOW), together with drummer Mike Terrana (RAGE, AXEL RUDI PELL, MASTERPLAN, TARJA and more).

The songs were written by Karlsson in Sweden during the summer of 2016. Once Romero was sent the music via their main bands' shared label home Frontiers, he immediately wanted to be part of the project. Terrana was the last piece of the puzzle and he recorded his drums in Italy, where he currently resides. The resulting album is a shot of adrenaline for all lovers of melodic metal! Musically, you can expect maximum melodic metal fusing the songwriting and epic structures of the great ALLEN/LANDE records (for which Magnus Karlsson was the main architect of the first three widely praised releases) with the Ronnie James DIO-esque vocal approach of Romero. (Let's not forget that Romero was hand-picked by DEEP PURPLE and RAINBOWs legendary guitarist Richie Blackmore to be the lead vocalist for RAINBOWs recent reunion shows, so the DIO comparison is more than accurate!)

With stunning artwork courtesy of Stan W. Decker and an outstanding mix courtesy of Simone Mularoni (of Italian prog metal masters DGM).

Today's tune "Still Standing Up" is the first single from the upcoming self titled album, set to be release on July 2:nd.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Goodbye Angels

"Goodbye Angels" is the fourth single from "The Getaway", an album by the American rock band RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS. The song was released to radio on April 4, 2017.

On April 14, 2017, Chad Smith announced on Twitter that the band would be shooting the video that night at their show in Atlanta and for fans to "wear something colorful". The video for "Goodbye Angels" was released on May 9, 2017 and is directed by Thoranna Sigurdardottir aka TOTA and stars Klara Kristin.

The video switches between a storyline following a girl's night and live footage of the band. Initially, the girl is partying with friends in a parking lot, and soon she has to outrun a security guard and she steals a bike to pedal to a show. When she arrives, she steal someone's beer, and encounters Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith, and Flea backstage. She briefly makes out with another woman in a toilet to get a pill from her pocket, then watches the rest of the show. By the end, she finds herself crying alone as crew members clear the empty arena.

"Goodbye Angels" made its live debut on July 10, 2016 at the band's T in the Park headlining set in Scotland. The song has regularly been performed on the band's The Getaway World Tour and mostly has been performed to open the encore and followed by "Give It Away" which closes their shows.

Chris Cornell - The Promise

Oh no, I'm totally stunned, the talent vocalist Chris Cornell, dies aged 52.

On May 17, 2017, Cornell died in Detroit after performing at a show with SOUNDGARDEN, according to his representative, Brian Bumbery. Footage of the concert surfaced on YouTube the next day. Detroit Police said they were investigating Cornell's death as a possible suicide. Later the same day, a medical examiner ruled Cornell's death as a suicide by hanging.

Representative for singer, who helped take the grunge sound of the 1990s into the mainstream, said his death was sudden and unexpected. Chris Cornell, best known as the lead vocalist, primary songwriter and rhythm guitarist for Seattle rock band SOUNDGARDEN and as lead vocalist and songwriter for the group AUDIOSLAVE. He was also known for his numerous solo works and soundtrack contributions since 1991, and as founder and frontman for TEMPLE OF THE DOG, the one-off tribute band dedicated to his late friend Andrew Wood.

Cornell was known for his role as one of the architects of the 1990s grunge movement, for his extensive catalog as a songwriter and for his near four octave vocal range as well as his powerful vocal belting technique. He released four solo studio albums, Euphoria Morning (1999), Carry On (2007), Scream (2009), Higher Truth (2015) and the live album Songbook (2011). Cornell received a Golden Globe Award nomination for his song "The Keeper" which appeared in the film Machine Gun Preacher and co-wrote and performed the theme song to the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006), "You Know My Name". He was voted "Rock's Greatest Singer" by readers of Guitar World, ranked 4th in the list of "Heavy Metal's All-Time Top 100 Vocalists" by Hit Parader, 9th in the list of "Best Lead Singers of All Time" by Rolling Stone, and 12th in MTV's "22 Greatest Voices in Music".

In a statement to the Associated Press, his representative, Brian Bumbery, said Cornell died on Wednesday night in Detroit.

Bumbery called the death “sudden and unexpected” and said his wife and family were shocked. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause, and asked for privacy.

Cornell had been touring with SOUNDGARDEN, and was tweeting upbeat messages about a sold-out concert the band played in Detroit just hours before his death.

Here is a live Video from the singer's last gig with SOUNDGARDEN at the Fox Theatre in Detroit last night, 17th May.

Today's tune "The Promise" is a song by American singer-songwriter Chris Cornell. The song was written as the ending credits song for the film of the same name. The song was released as a single on March 10, 2017, and is notable as being the last solo release from Cornell prior to his death on May 17, 2017. “The Promise” is available now. All proceeds will be donated to The International Rescue Committee. On April 19, 2017, he performed the song live with SOUNDGARDEN drummer Matt Cameron and a string quartet on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Moon Duo - Creepin'

Meaning all things magick and supernatural, the root of the word occult is that which is hidden, concealed, beyond the limits of our minds. If this is occult, then the Occult Architecture of MOON DUOs fourth album - a psychedelic opus in two separate volumes released in 2017 - is an intricately woven hymn to the invisible structures found in the cycle of seasons and the journey of day into night, dark into light.

Offering a cosmic glimpse into the hidden patterning embedded in everything, Occult Architecture reflects the harmonious duality of these light and dark energies through the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang.

In Chinese, Yin means “the shady side of the hill” and is associated with the feminine, darkness, night, earth. Following this logic, Vol. 1 embraces and embodies MOON DUOs darker qualities — released February 3, 2017 in the heart of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Yang means “the bright side of the hill” and is associated with the male, sun, light and the spirit of heaven and as such Vol. 2 explores the light and airy elements of MOON DUOs complex psyche, and will be released in the spring as the darkness of winter is replaced by the appearance of new life. An album that I will come back to later on.

Written and recorded in their hometown of Portland, Oregon, the two-part epic reflects the hidden energies of rainclouds and sunshine and the deep creep of Northwest forests along with their effect on the psyche, inspired by the occult and esoteric literature of Mary Anne Atwood, Aleister Crowley, Colin Wilson, and Manly P. Hall.

According to guitarist Ripley Johnson (WOODEN SHJIPS), “the concept of the dark/light, two-part album came as we were recording and mixing the songs, beginning in the dead of winter and continuing into the rebirth and blossoming of the spring. There’s something really powerful about the changing of the seasons in the Northwest, the physical and psychic impact it has on you, especially after we spent so many years in the seasonal void of California. I became interested in gnostic and hermetic literature around that time, especially the relationship between music and occult qualities and that fed into the whole vibe.”

Adds keyboardist Sanae Yamada, “the two parts are also intended to represent inverted components of a singular entity, like two faces on the same head which stare always in opposite directions but are inextricably driven by the same brain.”

Sonically the new records represent a dimensional shift in perspective for the band. Just as the season of autumn represents letting go in the form of trees shedding leaves, so Occult Architecture is a shedding of genre tropes, and an inviting in of new textures and soundscapes reflective of the album’s shimmering Yin/Yang qualities. Intricately structured, it is threads, fragments and traces rather than the direct influences that are heard. Yet listen carefully and clattering of bongos reminiscent of Popol Vuh, the fuzzy synth grind of Throbbing Gristle, the no-fi guitar of Chrome and the echoing infinity of Achim Reichel might all be discerned.

The rhythm and drum duties on the recordings fell to regular tour drummer John Jeffrey, who weaves into the pattern spooky percussion and funk-inspired electro-acoustic beats.

The albums were mixed separately with longtime collaborator Jonas Verwijnen, in different locations further expanding the album’s duality further; Vol. 1 in Berlin and Vol. 2 in Portland.

The result is a journey from darkness into light and from the shady side of the hill and back to the sunny side, reverberating with all that is eternal and infinite in the endless and mysterious architecture in which both sides harmoniously exist.

Today's tune "Creepin'" is taken from "Occult Architecture Vol 1"

Mastodon - Emperor of Sand

Monday, New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Emperor Of Sand" is the seventh studio album from the American progressive metal dudes MASTODON.

The album was recorded at the Quarry in Kennesaw, Georgia and mixed at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles. The band worked with record producer Brendan O'Brien, whom they collaborated with on their 2009 album "Crack the Skye". The songs were recorded as originally arranged, then they revisited each track to edit and refine the sound. Drummer Brann Dailor completed his drum tracks and began drafting lyrics while guitars and bass were being recorded by other band members.

Scott Kelly of NEUROSIS and Kevin Sharp of BRUTAL TRUTH both appear as guest vocalists on "Scorpion Breath" and "Andromeda" (today's tune) respectively. Kelly has appeared as a guest vocalist on every MASTODON studio album since "Leviathan" (2004).

The masterpiece "Crack The Skye" (2009) was the drummer Brann Dailor's way of dealing with the unimaginable feelings of losing his sister, Skye Dailor, who committed suicide at age 14. "Emperor Of Sand" inspired by experiences members of the band had when family and friends were recently diagnosed with cancer.

The concept and story in "Emperor Of Sand" follows a desert wanderer who has been handed a death sentence. Themes of death and survival are woven into the song's lyrics.

"Emperor Of Sand" is an 11 pieces of musical death sentence, a piece of art. From the first note in "Sultan’s Curse", the classic MASTODON vocal way and the riffage you can feel that you are in heaven, even if the "death" is the topic here. To continue with the lead single "Show Yourself" that shows a more straight-forward MASTODON that forces the sand like a whirlwind in the faraway desert. "Precious Stones" is a modern beauty, melodic, progressive, difficult but sounds so easy, almost radio friendly, wow! "Steambreather" is a doomish, heavy and slow. "Roots Remain" and "Jaguar God" is two epic pieces, very emotional and stunning beautifully. "Andromeda" is a pretty straightforward tune, with an amazing heaviness. "Word To The Wise" have a gorgeous chorus, is just jaw-dropping.

"Emperor Of Sand" is a masterpiece from the guys, where every note that Troy, Bill and Brent hits feels pertinent and Brann incredible drumming is just freaking stunning, what a sound they manage to create and the balance is just perfect, what an album.

Sum: "Emperor Of Sand" is a massive package that contains their most ambitious compositions yet.

Vinyl version have a "Color your own cover"

Today's tune "Andromeda", taken from the bands latest release "Emperor of Sand".
