Originally from Louisiana Landry started out as a busker on the streets of New Orleans before becoming a contributing member of the band Old Crow Medicine Show with whom he recorded 4 albums and toured from 2004 to 2014. He's released 4 solo albums to critical acclaim featuring such artists as Laura Marling Brandi Carlile Klara Soderberg (FIRST AID KIT) and Karen Elson among many others.

”Skeleton At The Banquet” is a collection of fine simple songs with a of wonderfully poetic imagery. He has a great gentle baritone voice that smoothly sweeps over the gorgeous acoustic melody. The album is full of ragged guitars, sweeping strings with a Americana vibe that would be compelling to any country americana fan.

Steve Von Till - Indifferent Eyes

Over the course of recent time, an aching, growing void has developed where our normal way of life has resided. Uncertainty abounds, and Steve Von Till's "No Wilderness Deep Enough" provides a voice of existential wisdom and experience to offer comfort and perspective in an era of uncharted territory. These six pieces of music shape a hallucinatory landscape of sound that plumbs the depths of the natural world's mysteries and uncertainties—questions that have vexed humanity since the dawn of time asked anew amidst a backdrop that's as haunting as it is holistic.

Von Till’s fifth solo album is a swirling and iridescent blend of ambient, neo-classical, and gothic Americana that swan-dives into the darkness of modern life, with the resulting emergence a sonic document of rural psychedelia that transcends the physical world—towards a greater spiritual acceptance that connects naturalism, spiritualism, and the corporeal form.

Von Till has charted an extraordinary musical path over the last several decades, from his main duties as singer and guitarist of the boundary-breaking NEUROSIS to the psychedelic music of his HARVESTMAN project and the unique folks songs he's released under his own name.

But "No Wilderness Deep Enough" is truly like nothing you've ever heard from him before—an album that's devastatingly beautiful and overwhelming in its scope, reminiscent of the tragic ecstasy of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' recent work as well as the borderless ambient music pioneered by Brian Eno, late composer Jóhann Jóhannsson's glacial compositions, and the electronic mutations of Coil.

With a foundation of simple melancholy piano chord progressions embellished with mellotron, cello, french horn and electronic treatments Von Till's scorched ache spreads across the terrain of No Wilderness Deep Enough like a brushfire, adding a tactile level to his sonic creation as well as an inviting level of friction to the burning beauty painted across the album's framework.

"No Wilderness Deep Enough" was recorded and mixed by Randall Dunn at Flora Recording and Playback. Mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service. The album was released August 7, 2020.

Kevin Morby - Wander

"Sundowner" is the sixth studio album by American indie rock musician Kevin Morby, released on October 16, 2020, on Dead Oceans.

"Sundowner" was written at Morby's home in Kansas. It was recorded in January 2019 with producer Brad Cook at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas. In the meantime, Morby released his fifth studio album, "Oh My God" (2019), and went on tour in support of it. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Morby and Cook put the finishing touches on "Sundowner" from their respective homes.

In an essay announcing the album, Morby described the album as his "attempt to put the Middle American twilight—its beauty profound, though not always immediate—into sound."

Today's tune "Wander" is taken from "Sundowner", as Morby explains “‘Wander’ is anchored by a lyric I’ve had in my head for the past decade,” he adds. “The hook ‘I wonder as I wander why was I born in the wild wonder’ is even featured in the insert of the first "Babies" LP. The song is meant to steadily gain momentum before coming to an abrupt halt. It is the shortest song I’ve ever written, and is intended to be played on a loop.” Enjoy today's tune.

King Dude • Full Virgo Moon

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Full Virgo Moon" is the eighth album of dark folk by Thomas Jefferson Cowgill's KING DUDE.

Thomas Cowgill is an American musician, mostly known for his work with dark folk music project KING DUDE – he speaks of benefits in mind-expansion and the majesty of earthquakes while averting his gaze from the dawn of Immortals, he is the king of Satanic folk.

For the past few years, KING DUDE has been one of the most misunderstood voices in folk music. He's been accused of everything under the sun; to some, he is a violent psychopathic Satanist, to others, he is a charlatan-left-leaning coward... And that's just scratching the surface. While there are many myths surrounding him it seems true that no one can easily sum him up in a single breath. One thing is for sure, he plays uncompromising songs devoted to his craft without questioning how it will be interpreted. He doesn't ask anyone for permission to exist in this way and refuses to back down in the face of his naysayers.

As is the tradition of folk music in its original form, his latest album "Full Virgo Moon" represents a "shots-fired over the line" at many of these detractors, his songs becoming pointed dagger-like anthems of the unsung theists and atheists alike. As he weaponizes his songs in this unique manner, he is quickly becoming one of the most dangerous and influential folk musicians of our times. Beware and be aware, KING DUDE is a force to be reckoned with.

"Full Virgo Moon" was recorded in Seattle Washington in the first two weeks of January 2020. The album consists of nine new songs all performed, recorded, mixed and mastered at home by Thomas Cowgill. The focus of the album was to recall the earlier works of KING DUDE before he had a full band, so there is a distinct minimal approach to the album. "Full Virgo Moon" was released on March 13th 2020 via Ván Records.

"Full Virgo Moon" is a wonderful mix of Gothic Folk Americana with a slight Country Blues touch in his own woven brand of KING DUDE. The tunes are peeled down in nine melancholic hymns with a decent playtime of thirty minutes, like the opening "My Rose By the Sea (Satyr Boy)", a mellow vocal that serves out a plate of beautiful sadness that will shake off any stiff He-man, that he gets completely imbalanced. It's followed by an acoustic guitar piece with atmospheric keys surrounds the living room of the title track "Full Virgo Moon", a tune that I somehow get the feeling that David Bowie was part of, a real beauty indeed. To saddle up a few knuckles to the mood-driving cowboy lullaby "Forty Fives Say Six Six Six" and the same mood can be found on "Make Me Blind" to the more creepy piano tune "Forgive My Sins" and the sensitive piece that will hook your soul and take it to "The Satanic Temple", or the mournful piano ballad in "A Funeral Song For Atheists". The album closes up the excellent album with the folkish "Something About You". KING DUDE has once again created an interesting and loveful album with just enough sadness to keep the tears in control even for a sensitive man like me.

Sum: A terrific "Satanic Folk" album that really needs to be noticed in these times.

Paul Cauthen - Cocaine Country Dancing

In 2019, Cauthen released his second solo record called Room 41. At one point Cauthen considered calling the record "Holy Ghost Fire" after that track on the album but eventually settled on "Room 41". The title of the record is in honor of the room number where Cauthen lived at the Belmont Hotel in West Dallas, Texas, for almost two years while he wrote the record.

Paul Mark "Big Velvet" Cauthen (born in 1986) is a singer-songwriter from East Texas. He started his music career in an Americana/indie folk rock duo called SONS OF FATHERS, before turning solo. He has released two albums and an EP as a solo artist, the most recent being "Room 41" released in September 2019. Cauthen is nicknamed Big Velvet for his distinctive baritone voice.

"Room 41" was the culmination of a dark period in Cauthen's life, prompted by the end of a long-term relationship in Wichita Falls, Texas. Cauthen relocated to Dallas and while writing prolifically, went through a period of alcohol and drug abuse.

Ian Noe - Between The Country

Monday, a new week and a new turn, it's time to present "Record Of The Week" "Between The Country" is the debut album by singer-songwriter Ian Noe. Noe hails from Beattyville, a small town in Eastern Kentucky.

Ian Noe sings with a gentle high nasal voice and the guitar is his main man. The lyrics are based on places where he has lived all his life and touches subjects like death, addiction, country jungle, lost love and poverty.

"Between The Country" was recorded in Nashville’s RCA Studio A with producer Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, and Jason Isbell). Dave also plays guitar on the album along with Adam Gardner on bass and organ piano, Chris Powell on drums and percussion, and Savannah Conley on back up vocals.

The album is a masterful piece of work, a very emotional and touches your soul with its simplicity. Tunes like the personal portraits of "Irene (Ravin’ Bomb)" or the story of a 1904 coal-train crash "Barbera’s Song". He also spotlights the drug problems that have reached every single place in his country in the tunes "Junk Town" and "Meth Head". The somber and emotional tunes like "Letter To Madeline", the title tune "Between The Country" and "Loving You" to the more powerful "Dead On The River (Rolling Down)" or the grey haze across the sky "That Kind Of Life". "Between The Country" is an excellent debut from this singer-songwriter that I recommend you to get or at least check it up.

Ian will hit the road in April with a start in Nashville and a few dates in Europe in June, hopefully he stops by Sweden for a show. See all the dates below.

CORDOVAS are an Americana / Rock band from Nashville, TN. Robert Plant - Carry Fire

Monday, New Week and I see that I have time for one more album review and "Record Of The Week" before we close this year.

"Carry Fire" is the 11th solo release for the LED ZEPPELIN lead singer is backed by his band the Sensational Space Shifters and features a guest appearance from Chrissie Hynde from PRETENDERS.

Folkloric have been something that Robert Plant always have embraced during his carer as a singer and songwriter. I am referring to the tales of the occult, Vikings and even Tolkien that we heard in the tunes of LED ZEPPELIN or the more folk traditions and myths that he has been working around during his solo carrier. With "Carry Fire" he dives deep into international folk forms and blends both musical, cultural and ancient lyrics with yesterday’s entries and creates something flavouring as "Carry Fire".

"Carry Fire" is a very detailed, ambitious and very direct album, it's so full of life that you get happy inside when you get this a spin.

The first cut "The May Queen" is a atmospherics piece with a spicy from Americana, lovely lyrics. The guitars ricochet throughout the spiritual tune "New World" until the more straightforward love song "Season's Song" and "Dance With You", two magical pieces that could be played at a any feast. "Carving Up the World" sounds like a mix between the 60's rock and African rhythms and goes in the same steps as the title tune, but "Carry Fire" has a more Indian flavour added to the sound. "A Way With Words" could been a collaboration with THÅSTRÖM, it's naked, slow, gray and slightly industrial with alot of motions and feelings. "Bones Of Saints", slight guitars with a ruffling drums shows another side of Plant, Americana with a Blues and Folk in a mix sounds pretty good here. "Keep It Hid", another slight Industrial tune, muffling bassline, guitars that stands out and a sentimental and groovy vocal makes this a tune to stand out, I really dig this. "Bluebirds Over the Mountain" Industrial Blues, modern but still retro, or ancient, a tune that I just love, specially Chrissie Hyndes part, suits this tune perfect. The album closes up with the mystique half pace "Heaven Sent", a emotional and historical piece.

Sum: Plant wears his years proudly and have released a magnificent album.

Elizabeth Woolridge Grant (born June 21, 1985), known professionally as Lana Del Rey, is an American singer, songwriter, and model. Her music has been noted by critics for its stylized cinematic quality, its preoccupation with themes of tragic romance, glamour, and melancholia, and its references to pop culture, particularly 1950s and 1960s Americana.

Lana Del Rey is today's headliner at Way Out West, performs last this evening at Flamingo.

Today's tune "Love" was released on February 18, 2017, through Polydor Records and Interscope Records, as the lead single from her fifth studio album, Lust for Life (2017). The song was written and produced by Del Rey, Benny Blanco, Emile Haynie and Rick Nowels, with additional production by Kieron Menzies. Its release was first teased with promotional posters hung in Los Angeles on February 17, after which the release date was pushed up due to leaked versions of the song surfacing online the same day.

Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night

"In the Pines", also known as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" and "Black Girl", is a traditional American folk song which dates back to at least the 1870s, and is believed to be Southern Appalachian in origin. The identity of the song's author is unknown, but it has been recorded by many artists in numerous genres. Traditionally, it is most often associated with the American folk and blues musician LEAD BELLY, who recorded several versions in the 1940s, as well as the American bluegrass musician Bill Monroe, who helped popularize the song (in a different variant, featuring lyrics about a train) among bluegrass and country audiences with his versions recorded in the 1940s and 1950s.

The song, performed by THE FOUR PENNIES, reached the UK top twenty in 1964. A live rendering by the American grunge band NIRVANA, which reinterpreted LEAD BELLYs version and was recorded during their MTV Unplugged performance in 1993, helped introduce the song to a new generation.

Singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain was introduced to the song by fellow Seattle musician Mark Lanegan, and played guitar on a version on Lanegan's 1990 album, The Winding Sheet. Like Lanegan, Cobain usually screamed its final verse.

It is likely that Cobain referenced Lead Belly's 1944 Musicraft version for his interpretation of the song; Lanegan owned an original 78 rpm record of this version, and it is the one that Cobain's version most closely resembles in terms of lyrics, form and title. In a 2009 MTV article, Kurt Loder remembers discussing the song's title with Cobain, with Cobain insisting, "But the Leadbelly version is called 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night,'" and Loder preferring the "In the Pines" title used by Bill Monroe (as well as Lead Belly).

Cobain earned critical acclaim for his acoustic performance of the song during NIRVANAs MTV Unplugged appearance in 1993. Canadian musician Neil Young described Cobain's vocals during the final screamed verse as "Unearthly, like a werewolf, unbelievable." This version was originally sanctioned to be released as a b-side to the band's "Pennyroyal Tea" single in 1994, but the single was cancelled following Cobain's death in April 1994. It was posthumously released on the band's MTV Unplugged in New York album in November 1994, and as a promotional single from the album. In 2002 the song featured as a bonus track on NIRVANAs "best of" compilation album NIRVANA. A solo Cobain home demo, recorded in 1990, appears on the band's 2004 rarities box set, "With the Lights Out".

The Allman Brothers Band - Midnight Rider

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Midnight Rider" is a song by the American rock band THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. It was the second single from their second studio album "Idlewild South" (1970), released on Capricorn Records. The song was primarily written by vocalist Gregg Allman, who first began composing it at a rented cabin outside of Macon, Georgia. He enlisted the help of roadie Robert Kim Payne to complete the song's lyrics. He and Payne broke into Capricorn Sound Studios to complete a demo of the song.

While the original ALLMAN BROTHERS release of the song did not chart, "Midnight Rider" was much more successful in cover versions. Gregg Allman's solo version of the song, released in 1973, was its biggest chart success; it was a top 20 hit in the U.S. and Canada. A cover by Jamaican singer, Paul Davidson, represented its biggest peak in the United Kingdom, where it hit number ten. Country artist Willie Nelson also recorded a version of the song that peaked at number six on U.S. country charts.

"Midnight Rider" originated during the group's time spent at Idlewild South, a $165-a-month farmhouse they rented on a lake outside of Macon, Georgia. Allman felt free to smoke marijuana with no police around, which contributed to his writing at the cabin. Its genesis was quick: the song came to him out of nowhere, and he completed a rough draft in just over an hour of writing. He found himself stuck on the song's third verse, which he regarded as an especially important component of the song: "it's kind of the epilogue to the whole thing," he later wrote. In the middle of the night, he went to roadie Kim Payne, who was keeping watch over the band's warehouse, where they kept their equipment. Payne helped him write the first two lines of the third verse: "We were getting high and, honestly, he was starting to irritate me—because he was singing this song over and over and I got sick of hearing the band play the same shit over and over again until they got it right," he later recalled. "So I just threw out the line, 'I've gone past the point of caring / some old bed I’ll soon be sharing.'"

Thankful for Payne's help, he told him he would give him a percentage of its royalties should it become a success. Payne was not originally listed as a songwriter on the song, so he later had Allman contact Phil Walden to produce a contract that allowed him five percent of its future royalties.

Allman wanted to record it immediately, but had no keys to Capricorn Sound Studios, which was adjacent to the warehouse. They phoned both producer Johnny Sandlin and Paul Hornsby who "told us to go to hell, come back in the morning," according to Payne. Intent on recording the song, Allman and Payne broke into the building, with Payne smashing a window on a door to allow him to unlock it. After managing to turn on the recording console and microphones, Allman recorded a demo by himself on acoustic guitar. Unable to find the band members, he enlisted friend Twiggs Lyndon to perform bass guitar on a rough demo, though Lyndon did not know how to play the instrument. Allman instructed him to play the bassline he had envisioned and Lyndon practiced it multiple times to prepare. He later found Allman Brothers drummer Jaimoe and had him perform congas on the demo. In the final studio recording, Duane Allman plays acoustic guitar, as he had enough studio experience to produce a nice acoustic sound.

Gregg Allman last concert took place in October 2016, and he continued to cancel concerts citing "serious health issues". In April 2017, he denied reports that he had entered hospice care, but was resting at home on doctor's orders. One month later, Allman died at his home in Savannah, Georgia, on May 27, 2017, due to complications from liver cancer. He was 69 years old. He will be buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia, where his brother Duane, and fellow band member Berry Oakley are also interred.

Before his death, Allman recorded his last album, Southern Blood, with producer Don Was at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The album was recorded with his then-current backing band. It was set originally for a January 2017 release; his manager Lehman confirmed the album is now set for a September release.

In My Cross to Bear, Allman reflected on his life and career:

Music is my life's blood. I love music, I love to play good music, and I love to play music for people who appreciate it. And when it's all said and done, I'll go to my grave and my brother will greet me, saying, "Nice work, little brother—you did all right." I must have said this a million times, but if I died today, I have had me a blast.

Sturgill Simpson - In Bloom

Sturgill Simpson makes one small but significant addition to the lyrics in his soulful cover of NIRVANA's "In Bloom" — after each "don't know what it means," he chimes in with his own "to love someone." While that idea may be implied in Kurt Cobain's original, it's a distinction made all the more poignant by the fact that Simpson recorded the song and his new album A Sailor's Guide to Earth especially for his young son.

"I'm never going to make anything other than a country record," says Simpson about his album "A Sailor's Guide to Earth". "I wanted a song on the album to capture that awkward stage in every young boy's life where they are searching for their place in the world," Simpson tells Rolling Stone Country. "One night while discussing the album with my wife, she asked, 'Well, what were you listening to when you were 13?' I remember in seventh or eighth grade, when "Nevermind" dropped, it was like a bomb went off in my bedroom. For me, that song has always summed up what it means to be a teenager, and I think it tells a young boy that he can be sensitive and compassionate — he doesn't have to be tough or cold to be a man."

The video for "In Bloom" depicts that loneliness and confusion of youth with the same stylish animation that powers Simpson's "Brace for Impact" video. While a dagger-toothed, hairy monster swirls below, a young man (with a cannon barrel where his head should be) tentatively tries to navigate a rowboat across this troubled sea. As the song explodes into an optimistic cascade of horns, the boy discovers the way to vanquish the monster is not with angry cannon fire but by radiating love. It's a realization as transformative as Simpson's rendering of the song — beneath all Nirvana's hormonal agitation, there's a hopeful resolution.

John Sturgill Simpson (born June 8, 1978) is an American country music and roots rock singer-songwriter. To date he has released three albums as a solo artist. He released two albums independently, High Top Mountain in 2013 and Metamodern Sounds in Country Music in 2014. His second album is notable for being nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Americana Album. His third studio album, "A Sailor's Guide to Earth", was released on Atlantic Records and was Simpson's first major-label release, later earning him Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards while also being nominated for Album of the Year.

Bask - Shake The Soot

BASK are a young band from North Carolina that play a highly original blend of Americana, country, post-rock and stoner/doom metal. "American Hollow" is the band’s debut on The Path Less Traveled Records and I can say that this is great stuff. An energetic album with some half-time shuffles that breaks into a pretty straight-forward stoner rock groove, similar to some of the less aggressive tunes by RED FANG.

The vocals have a great twang with a distinctly country vibe, odd but it works. The lads have a great feeling in the musicianship jangly and swiftly guitars slings, big fat drums and a rumbly bass in a melancholy country-like vibe.

Today's tune "Shake The Soot“ is taken from the album "American Hollow", released in September 2015 by This Charming Man Records on LP/CD and digital.

Lucinda Williams - Copenhagen

This Sunday stood Lucinda Williams at Circus Scene and gave us a really nice, intimate evening of classic Americana. The sound was brilliant, the performance was really good. Everything was wonderfully unadorned, petite backline and the band was slimmed to only guitarist Doug Pettibone and bassist Dave Sutton. One evening, as I are likely to remember for long time.

Lucinda Williams (born January 26, 1953) is an American rock, folk, blues, and country music singer and songwriter.

She recorded her first albums in 1978 and 1980 in a traditional country and blues style and received very little attention from radio, the media, or the public. In 1988, she released her self-titled album, Lucinda Williams. This release featured "Passionate Kisses," a song later recorded by Mary Chapin Carpenter which garnered Lucinda her first Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1994.

Known for working slowly, Lucinda recorded and released only one other album in the next several years (Sweet Old World in 1992) before her greatest success came in 1998 with Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. This album presented a broader scope of songs that fused rock, blues, country, and Americana into a more distinctive style that still managed to remain consistent and commercial in sound. It went gold and earned Lucinda another Grammy while being universally acclaimed by critics. Since Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, she has released a string of albums that have also been critically acclaimed, though none have sold in the numbers of her 1998 breakthrough. She was also named "America's best songwriter" by TIME magazine in 2002.

Todays tune "Copenhagen" is taken from the tenth studio album "Blessed", her eleventh album overall. It was released in 2011 on Lost Highway Records and includes guest appearances by Elvis Costello and Matthew Sweet. The song itself is a tribute to a close friend who passed away when Lucinda was out on tour in Europe.

Baroness - Take My Bones Away

 

This weeks album will be another new record with a band that I really look up to, both music creation and the artistic thought of the band, the singer in the band possesses an amazing artist quality's a nice plus, his work is quite stunning. Today as we dig a little light us into the Savannah, Georgia’s own sludge metal titans Baroness's latest work Yellow & Green.

Apparently it was no longer sufficient to have one color to cover the volume of ideas for the band's third album release in 2012, as follow-up to up to 2007's Red Album and the 2009's Blue Record has become a 18-track double-record named Yellow & Green. The double album was released on July 17, 2012 through Relapse Records

The record is divided in two slices, ie two colors. The first (Yellow) is little bit of a Baroness as we know, a with the chugging, dirtier sound, but contains a lot of new creativity of softer tunes with many beautiful melodies. The second record (Green), is more reserved, quieter, more fine tuned. Vocal part is softer, the harmonies are down to earth. You could sum this up and say that they swimming in classic roots/americana, early 90s indie/alternative, pop/punk, emo/post-hardcore, radio pop, folk, hard rock and so forth. It takes a while for me to acquainting myself with the accustomed sound and above all the softer song, but Yellow & Green is a record to bury itself in.

With this record, chances are that Baroness fanbase will be two shared. It will possibly opening the band to a whole new audience, which feels a bit more easily accessible and probably lose the old as it has become too commercialized and poppy. But I like this and I love bands that truly developed and step out of their comfort zone. I feel that I will spend much time with this record.
