Landing - Wait Or Hide

Connecticut group LANDING celebrates their 20th anniversary this year, but is showing no signs of losing creative momentum. On the contrary, "Bells In New Towns", their second album for El Paraiso Records, is arguably their finest, most cohesive effort to date.

LANDINGs sound has always been multi-textured, alluding to many different genres at once. There's the heavy oscillating drones and the fuzzy, motoric psychedelia, the lush ambient soundscapes and shimmering, dreamy vibes - all tied together by that characteristic sense of fluid progression.

"Bells In New Towns" could be described as their most grounded, earthy sounding release so far. On this record the ethereal components of their sound are firmly anchored by a tight, steady low-end – certainly due to the fact that the album was partly recorded by seasoned New England rock producer Justin Pizzoferrato (DINOSAUR JR., ELDER, PIXIES, SONIC YOUTH). Much like their spiritual kins in YO LA TENGO and BARDO POND, LANDING have eclectically picked their influences from a wide range of musical eras and cultures. The result is an electric music that speaks to the mind as well as the senses.

Sleep - The Sciences

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The classic drone stoner band SLEEP shocked the metal world by dropping a surprise album titled simply "The Sciences" on 4/2, a day where the reefer they enjoy so much gains global adoration, the day before the record store day. Sadly only in UK and US. Rest of the world have to wait for the holy grail. It's have been released digitally and I could not wait to listen to it. :)

SLEEP is an American doom metal power trio from San Jose, California. The band earned critical and record label attention early in its career. Critic Eduardo Rivadavia describes them as "perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band" and notes they exerted a strong influence on heavy metal in the 1990s. However, conflict with its record company contributed to SLEEPs breakup by the end of the decade. The band reformed in 2009 and has played sporadic live dates internationally since. In 2018, SLEEP released their fourth and comeback album, "The Sciences".

"The Sciences" is the first new music that they have released in 15 years. Following in the footsteps of doom and heavy metal forefathers BLACK SABBABTH. The album opens up with the title tune, distorted, downtuned Wah wah guitars by Matt Pike until it's time for "Marijuanaut’s Theme", where SLEEPs aesthetic comes up, where much of the lyrics have to do with marijuana. On the album SLEEP makes multiple allusions to Birmingham heavy metal pioneers BLACK SABBABTH, whose sound inspired SLEEP. Tony Iommi is referenced in the lyrics, and the song "Giza Butler" is a play on the city Giza and the name of BLACK SABBABTHs bassist, Geezer Butler. A powerful tune that Al Cisneros slow bass is taking space along side of Matt Pike's guitar and Jason Roeder drumming. "Sonic Titan" and "Antarticans Thawed" are two great pieces where the typical SLEEP creation is to make an "hypnotic state" in the repetition of riffs and passages to grasp the listner. The album closes up with the dark and sympathetic tune "The Botanist", a which is a real beauty. And with this standard they are back in buisness for real, well done SLEEP, really looking forward to catch you guys live again soon!

Sum: For gods sake, don't miss these veterans of hard, doomy stoner rock!

Today's tune "Marijuanaut's Theme" taken from "The Sciences", enjoy!

Moon Duo - Creepin'

Meaning all things magick and supernatural, the root of the word occult is that which is hidden, concealed, beyond the limits of our minds. If this is occult, then the Occult Architecture of MOON DUOs fourth album - a psychedelic opus in two separate volumes released in 2017 - is an intricately woven hymn to the invisible structures found in the cycle of seasons and the journey of day into night, dark into light.

Offering a cosmic glimpse into the hidden patterning embedded in everything, Occult Architecture reflects the harmonious duality of these light and dark energies through the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang.

In Chinese, Yin means “the shady side of the hill” and is associated with the feminine, darkness, night, earth. Following this logic, Vol. 1 embraces and embodies MOON DUOs darker qualities — released February 3, 2017 in the heart of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Yang means “the bright side of the hill” and is associated with the male, sun, light and the spirit of heaven and as such Vol. 2 explores the light and airy elements of MOON DUOs complex psyche, and will be released in the spring as the darkness of winter is replaced by the appearance of new life. An album that I will come back to later on.

Written and recorded in their hometown of Portland, Oregon, the two-part epic reflects the hidden energies of rainclouds and sunshine and the deep creep of Northwest forests along with their effect on the psyche, inspired by the occult and esoteric literature of Mary Anne Atwood, Aleister Crowley, Colin Wilson, and Manly P. Hall.

According to guitarist Ripley Johnson (WOODEN SHJIPS), “the concept of the dark/light, two-part album came as we were recording and mixing the songs, beginning in the dead of winter and continuing into the rebirth and blossoming of the spring. There’s something really powerful about the changing of the seasons in the Northwest, the physical and psychic impact it has on you, especially after we spent so many years in the seasonal void of California. I became interested in gnostic and hermetic literature around that time, especially the relationship between music and occult qualities and that fed into the whole vibe.”

Adds keyboardist Sanae Yamada, “the two parts are also intended to represent inverted components of a singular entity, like two faces on the same head which stare always in opposite directions but are inextricably driven by the same brain.”

Sonically the new records represent a dimensional shift in perspective for the band. Just as the season of autumn represents letting go in the form of trees shedding leaves, so Occult Architecture is a shedding of genre tropes, and an inviting in of new textures and soundscapes reflective of the album’s shimmering Yin/Yang qualities. Intricately structured, it is threads, fragments and traces rather than the direct influences that are heard. Yet listen carefully and clattering of bongos reminiscent of Popol Vuh, the fuzzy synth grind of Throbbing Gristle, the no-fi guitar of Chrome and the echoing infinity of Achim Reichel might all be discerned.

The rhythm and drum duties on the recordings fell to regular tour drummer John Jeffrey, who weaves into the pattern spooky percussion and funk-inspired electro-acoustic beats.

The albums were mixed separately with longtime collaborator Jonas Verwijnen, in different locations further expanding the album’s duality further; Vol. 1 in Berlin and Vol. 2 in Portland.

The result is a journey from darkness into light and from the shady side of the hill and back to the sunny side, reverberating with all that is eternal and infinite in the endless and mysterious architecture in which both sides harmoniously exist.

Today's tune "Creepin'" is taken from "Occult Architecture Vol 1"

Conan - Blood Eagle

10th place on the Tune Of The Days Album of the year goes to the doomsters trio from Liverpool. Conan's latest slab of rumbling doom metal is as thick and viscous as maple syrup. Blood Eagle is ridiculously heavy and drony. With it's towering monolith and barbaric riffs will scare any living soul that have their lights off during this time of year and this record spinning.

This is the best heavy drone doom record of the year, no doubt about that.

Todays tune "Foehammer" is the fastest tune on the record, enjoy!

Lorelle Meets the Obsolete - What's Holding You?

The Guadalajara duo Lorelle Meets The Obsolete play a real deadly nightshade brand of psychedelia.

The music is done with a Mexican fuzzed out sound that is filled with dreamy garage rock and droned out psychedelica. There are so many influences that I lost count when I tried to go true them. The thing that amaze me is that they manage to use all the musical influences and made it all their own, well done.

Lorelle Meets The Obsolete, is Lorelle, who plays guitar, organ and sings, and her partner The Obsolete, who plays drums and does everything else.

Todays tune "What’s Holding You", taken from the album "Chambers", released 03 March 2014. Just listen to this tune as it's filled up with crunchy distorted guitar and ethereal female vocals.

Queen Elephantine - Kabir

Queen Elephantine is meditative blues of whirlwind ghost ships forced down hopeless maelstroms of the Nile. Modal psychedelic doom, formed in Hong Kong in 2006 by Indrayudh Shome and Danny Quinn but the lineup has changed several times and Shome is the only remaining original member, currently based in in Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

They have produced four full length albums, Surya, Kailash, Garland of Skulls, and Scarab, three splits, with Sons of Otis, Elder, and Alunah, and several minor releases.

'
Todays tune "Kabir" is taken from the album "Surya" is a mirage in the Martian desert – both otherwordly and earthly, barren and dense, a wild tempest of feeling. These are loose, droning jams; all-encompassing, draining, oppressive and at once peaceful, like the subject of the album, Surya – the Sun. These are the bastard children of the Grateful Dead that listen to Swans and Earth and Velvet Underground and YOB. Surya was recorded June 2007 in Hong Kong. Mixed by I. Shome. Enjoy!

Satyricon - The Infinity of Time and Space

A new week and it's time to present this week's "Record Of The Week" This week goes to the Norwegian metal band Satyricon and their new self titled album. The fact that I like the little lethargic, mid-tempo drudge, drafty, monotonous sound that Satyricon possess, it's dark and a little creepy and with a doomier approach witch I like.

I got very good impression of the album, which has been growing alot latly. It might look and feel very light and easy at the surface, but with a few turns it gets right.

Satyr (Sigurd Wongraven) & Frost (Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad) have done a great job one more time and im looking forward to the show at Debaser in December.

Todays tune "The Infinity of Time and Space", taken from the latest self-titled Satyricon album.

Saturnalia Temple - Aion of Drakon

Today we present the main act that played at Hellbar, namely Saturnalia Temple, who served their musically deep down, Black Magic Rock Psychedelia. As on previous occasions, this is a pleasant experience live, where Tommie heats up with incense before it's time to tear of the first riff. This occultic doom infused with arcane rites and magical incantations, sorceries of times past fueled by psychotropic riffs and megalithic reverberatons!

Gig was really good and the band delivers a lot of songs that will make any living form to fall into a trance.

Here are some pictures from the show:

Todays tune is the title track from Saturnalia Temple album "Aion of Drakon"
