Samsara Blues Experiment - Flipside Apocalypse

New week, new album to lift up from the masses and add to the pile as "Record Of The Week".

The Germans in "Samsara Blues Experiment" and with their second album "Revelation and Mystery (World in Sound)" takes the position as this weeks record.

The album is filled with heavy riffs, psychedelic blues-rock with some elements of the cosmos fuse together to create a harmonious system around the sound. With a great active mood they really make a good stand. Already waiting to see what will be next from these guys. So what are you waiting for, check this up!

Samsara Blues Experiment are a Berlin based band, founded in Summer 2007 by leadguitarist/singer Christian Peters. They went through several changes in the first period but are in constant line-up since September 2008 featuring Hans Eiselt(guitar), drummer Thomas Vedder and Richard Behrens (bass). As the band name implies three elemental aspects are to notice- the blues as the fundament where it all comesfrom, the inclusion of spiritual influences accompanied by Indian/raga musicand the experimental approach tomix up varied elements in a convincing manner.

The band's songs are dominated by a playful dual guitar work as well as a passionate blend of heavy psych, stoner and spacerock. This is provided with several nuances and transitions in between - quite retro styled, jamming, even sometimes workedout with a repetitive hypnotic touch in the tradition of krautrock. The bandproduced two appetizer EP's and intensivelytoured Europe as well as the US-Westcoast in order to reach forthe appropriate condition to record a full album.

Todays tune "Flipside Apocalypse" is the fast-paced rumbling track that is taken from Revelation and Mystery (World in Sound), released 2011.

D-A-D - Bad Craziness

The Danish rock band known as "Disneyland After Dark", is out on tour atm, last friday did they visit Stockholm for a show at Debaser Medis. The band looked to be in good shape and in excellent mood to offer a great evening. Sure, it was a great eve at Debaser Medis, where the band offered a string of awesome songs from their 30-year catalog.

Soon D-A-D will hit rest of Europe with their 30 Years 30 Gigs Tour where the German dates will be supported by the Swedish rock band Hong Faux, that will be a killer for the German fans!

D-A-D:s lyrics are often quite humorous, and sometimes also melancholic, resulting in funny, melancholic quotes: I grew up in a life-size pinball machine (from the song Laugh and a Half) Good-bye and many tanks (from the song Down that dusty third-world road) Can't win on a compromise, I'll rather lose on my own... (from the song Point of View) But you can't run away from trouble, Coz there ain't no place that far (from the song Jihad) I look at my watch 'n' look at my wrist, and then I punch myself in the face with my fist (from the song Smart Boy Can't Tell Ya )

The bands name that had to be changed after a threatening lawsuit from The Walt Disney Company. They have also used the names D.A.D., D-A-D, D•A•D and D:A:D, each name representing a period in the band's history. Their style of music is often categorized as melodic heavy rock.

Todays tune "Bad Craziness" is taken from the 4th studio album "Riskin' It All", released on October 10, 1991.

Ulf Nilsson - Little By Little

Ulf Nilsson from Halmstad, is a Swedish singer-songwriter, who won the first season of TV4's artist competition The Voice Sweden on 23 March 2012.

Nilsson grew up in Halland, has worked as a teacher and is married to singer Linda Varg, who has participated in talent programs Idol 2010 and Popstars. With the win of the Voice Sweden he gained a deal with record label Universal Music. In December 2013 released as the debut album Little by Little in co-production with Chris Rehn and then he went on tour in Sweden with the group Stiftelsen.

Todays tune "Little by little", the title track from his début record, the track is also something of a motto for Uffe, also as private. The phrase appears in a tattoo on his forearm and is about the importance of never giving up whether it be in life or dreams, and be patient. And he has.

Asia - Valkyrie

Asia (often stylised as ASIA) is a British rock band. The band was formed in 1981 as a supergroup of four members from different progressive rock bands, namely John Wetton (former bassist/vocalist of such bands as King Crimson, Family, and UK), Steve Howe (guitarist of Yes), Geoff Downes (keyboardist of Yes and The Buggles) and drummer Carl Palmer (of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, and Atomic Rooster).

The band has gone through many line-up changes throughout its history, but in 2006, the original line-up reunited. As a result of this, a second band called Asia Featuring John Payne exists as a continuation of John Payne's career as Asia's frontman from 1991 until Wetton's return in 2006. In 2013, Howe retired from the band in order to pursue other projects, and was replaced by guitarist Sam Coulson, completing the current lineup.

Todays tune "Valkyrie" is taken from the upcoming fourteenth studio album "Gravitas". The album is wase released on March 25, 2014. The album was written and produced by John Wetton and Geoff Downes. It will be the group's first album to feature their new guitarist, Sam Coulson, who replaced Steve Howe in January 2013 after the latter retired from the band. The album was originally announced under the name Valkyrie which is now the same of the lead single. 'Gravitas is the first Wetton-era Asia studio album without Howe since Astra in 1985.

California Breed - Sweet Tea

Former Black Country Communion stars, singer-bassist Glenn Hughes and drummer Jason Bonham, have formed their new band California Breed, featuring the astounding talents of 23-year-old singer-guitarist Andrew Watt, the fact that their first album has been produced by Dave Cobb, whose spectacular work with Rival Sons has received so much acclaim, gives a big clue as to what they sound like. "It's proper rock," says Hughes, "but at the same time it's very now. Andrew is as influenced by Mick Ronson as he is Jimmy Page." "I grew up listening to all the grunge bands," says Watt, "but my dad always played me The Who, the Stones and Led Zeppelin so that became my music too. "This kid is amazing," says Bonham. "The first time we met I thought he looked like the white Jimi Hendrix. And he plays in the studio likes he's onstage!"

The three-man line-up got together as California Breed for the first time last year after Hughes was introduced to the newcomer from New York by their mutual friend Julian Lennon. "Julian was having an exhibition of his photographs at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in LA," Glenn recalls, "and he said, 'You must meet this guy, he's the most fantastic guitarist -- who turned out to be Andrew."

Reconvening at Hughes' Hollywood home a few days later, "The chemistry was just instant," says Hughes. "We immediately wrote two songs together, Chemical Rain and Solo, both of which have ended up on the album. That's when I called Jason and said you've gotta come down right now."

"The energy when I walked in the room was crackling," recalls Bonham. "I was so pleased. Glenn and I had not only really locked in as a rhythm section in BCC but we'd started writing together and we both really wanted to keep that good feeling going." Indeed, all 12 tracks on the as-yet untitled forthcoming California Breed album -- the band have signed a deal with signed a deal with the Frontiers label - have equal co-writing credits amongst the band. Recorded at Cobb's Nashville studio, "Everything was done more or less live," says Hughes, "including the vocals. Which is the reverse of how I've always done things".

The end result is a sound that combines all the classic rock elements of BCC -- big, meat-cleaver riffs and heart-rending vocals -- but with a 21st century gloss that comes from working with someone as up-to-the-minute and talented as Watt (whose previous music can be heard at his Soundcloud page and on the track below, with video directed by Mick Rock).

Look out for Midnight Oil, a raunchy Stones-esque rocker with breathless female backing vocals, deep groove rhythms and face-smacking guitars. The other breakout track is All Falls Down, the kind of spine-tingling pop-rock-who-knows-what that starts all colour and light and finishes all towering harmonies, back-arching guitars and epidemic-sized catchiness.

There are others but, as Hughes says, "This, I promise, is going to be something special."

Todays tune "Sweet Tea" is taken from the upcoming record, set to release at May 16th 2014.

House of Lords - Battle

House of Lords is a glam metal/AOR band from Los Angeles, California. House of Lords was formed in 1987 by former Angel member and keyboardist Gregg Giuffria after his solo project Giuffria. After listening to demos - originally intended for Giuffria's third record - a record deal with Gene Simmons' company Simmons Record was agreed upon, on Simmon's condition that the band's name be changed (to House of Lords) and a new lead singer recruited. James Christian thus replaced David Glen Eisley, after Christian was suggested by ex-Giuffria and Quiet Riot bassist Chuck Wright, after having worked together in L.A. Rocks.

House of Lords' eponymous debut was released in 1988, featuring a heavier sound than Giuffria with a lower keyboard mix. The album received critical acclaim and the band toured with both Cheap Trick and the Scorpions in 1989.

House of Lords debuted in 1989 with the release of the self-titled album, a record which is still regarded as one of the best Arena Rock releases of the 80’s. The colossal sound, the soaring vocals of James Christian and instrumental capabilities of the band (which featured ex Angel and Giuffria, Gregg Giuffria, along with such luminaries as Lanny Cordola, Chuck Wright and Ken Mary), reminiscent of such frontrunners as Whitesnake, Deep Purple and Van Halen, immediately brought the band to the attention of the media and fans.

With their sophomore release entitled “Sahara”, House of Lords gained considerable chart success with their cover version of Blind Faith’s “Can't Find My Way Home”. After a tour with Nelson in 1991, the group disbanded, eventually coming back together with a new lineup (only featuring original members Giuffria and Christian) in 1992 with "Demon's Down". This was a more melodic record which saw the big contribution at the songwriting helm - between others - of Mark Baker, a guy who penned a couple of years before the majority of the Signal “Loud and Clear” album, one of the most sought after gems of the Melodic Rock genre.

With the change of the musical climate, House of Lords went into hibernation until the original lineup came back together in 2000, releasing of the controversial “Power and the Myth” an album which featured a sound leaning more towards Progressive Hard Rock with 70’s rock influences.

After a short European tour, singer James Christian decided to go back to the trademark Arena Rock sound of House Of Lords, putting together a new line-up with the blessing of founding member Gregg Giuffria, who opted out right before the release of “Power and the Myth”. New members Jimi Bell on guitars, B.J. Zampa on drums supplied a true powerhouse sound to the fifth studio album “World Upside Down”, a record which caused a real stir in the Hard Rock and Melodic Rock scene and was followed up by the equally impressive “Come to My Kingdom” in 2008.

Fast forward to September 2011 which will mark the release of the newest addition to a stellar catalogue of songs. BIG MONEY, is well, ‘BIG’. The album starts with the trademark vocals of James Christian and crashes into a Power Rock Classic that you will not forget after the first listen, followed by in a song that Christian describes “as the band’s best work to date”: “One Man Down”. Each song has its own distinct quality as you would expect from The Lords and once again the album is full of soaring choruses, awesome guitar work and songs that grab you from the first listen and don’t let go. James teamed up again on the songwriting with long-time friend and partner Mark Baker along with the other band memmbers Jimi Bell and BJ Zampa.

House of Lords is:

James Christian – vocals
Jimi Bell – guitars
BJ Zampa – drums
Chris McCarvill - bass

Todays tune "Battle" is taken from the ninth studio album "Precious Metal" that is following up the critically acclaimed "Big Money". This brand new release, recorded and produced by the band's singer and mastermind James Christian, again has a stellar sound, with solid and baroque songwriting mixed with unique melodic sensibilities and amazing musical skills.

Musically "Precious Metal" shows a return to the roots of the band's sound. James Christian as usual sings his heart out and he sounds better than ever on these new songs. Guitarist Jimi Bell shines with heavy, but melodic riffs throughout the album, with Chris McCarville and BJ Zampa bringing a solid and powerful rhythm foundation to the House of Lords sound.

In James Christian's words: "When we started to write this record, we knew after the 1st song that we were on to something special. The energy level was off the charts for all of us. Jimi Bell came out swinging and BJ and Chris were just crushing it. Recording this album was very easy as the songs already had arrangements that were complete. Precious Metal is a testament to years of being a band that loves what they do and has so much more to offer in the years to come."

Spiralarms - Blackmoon Morning

New week, new album to package as this week's "Record Of The Week".

From East Bay, California we will find SpiralArms, a band that rose from the ashes of millennial bands Systematic, Forbidden and Man Made God. This sextet has one mission. That mission is to save today’s music scene by bringing true heavy melodic rock to the forefront. And they plan on doing this with this their second album "Freedom".

The album is thick with classic rocks matched with modern tone and production which blends tradition with contemporary elements and it contains a good variety in the tunes to keep the interest up. You will get some real bombastic riffs, haunting hooks some soaring vocals and great instrumentation that really rocks. The record is excellently suited with a six pack.

Ripping out your heart while it's still beating, gently massaging it then slapping it back in your chest. In other words, rocking your face off!

Iron Butterfly - Unconscious Power

Sunday, time for a classic and todays tune "Unconscious Power" is taken from the debut studio album "Heavy", by the rock band Iron Butterfly, released in early 1968. Most of the songs are strikingly simple, based on two or three riffs. The lyrics are also simple; with the exceptions of "Unconscious Power" and "Gentle as it May Seem", each song has but a single verse of eight lines or less, repeated in whole or in part as needed.

The first two tracks, "Possession" and "Unconscious Power", were released as the respective sides of a single.

Three of the group's members (Jerry Penrod, Darryl DeLoach and Danny Weis) left the band shortly after the album was recorded, leaving Ingle and Bushy to find replacements. Despite being a debut album with no hit single to provide an entry point for the casual listener, Heavy was a commercial success, reaching #78 on the Billboard Charts and eventually going Gold in the US.

Contrary to rumor, tambourine player Darryl DeLoach contributed lead vocals to only a few songs on Heavy. As with all of Iron Butterfly's albums prior to Scorching Beauty, most of the lead vocals are by Doug Ingle.

The album's artwork depicts the band members playing their instruments beside a large monument of a human ear. It was designed by Armando Busich (artwork) and Joe Ravetz (photography).

Iron Butterfly was an American psychedelic rock band best known for the 1968 hit "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", providing a dramatic sound that led the way towards the development of hard rock music. Formed in San Diego, California among band members that used to be "arch enemies", their heyday was the late 1960s, but the band has been reincarnated with various members with varying levels of success, with no new recordings since 1975. The band's seminal 1968 album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is among the world's 40 best-selling albums, selling more than 30 million copies. Iron Butterfly is also notable for being the very first group to receive an RIAA platinum award.

Hong Faux - Coming Through The Rye

"Who's afraid of a little pop?"

The question was asked in a review of Hong Faux's first EP, "Novus Forum MMX" (2010). Who is afraid of a little pop? Well, at least not this band from Stockholm and definitely not the international audience that quickly took the band to their hearts. But the fact that the band was first picked up by the stoner scene came as a surprise, says singer and guitarist Nik Sirén who, together with Johan Bergqvist (bass), Daniel Israelsson (drums) and Björn Billgren (guitar), forms Hong Faux.

Our ambition is to combine the guitar riffs from the 70's and the grunge scene's more melodic parts from the 90's. We have always enjoyed pop choruses and were convinced that the stoner crew would think we were wimps. But we were wrong...

This appreciation from an unexpected quarter might be explained by the retro-flavoured sound of their first recording, an EP that got its follow-up with the 2011 album "The Crown that Wears the Head". The band has since then refined the concept and the big melodic choruses take up a larger space now. With Razzia Notes by their side the band has the possibility to fulfil their musical vision, to take it all the way. Anders Fridén, record company boss and In Flames singer, has for a long time had his eyes on the group, which has been praised by magazines like Classic Rock and Metal Hammer and even done a television broadcasted concert at Rockpalats in Germany.

Now it is finally time for more people to discover Hong Faux and their unique mix of heavy riffs and memorable melodies. The LP "Hello Neptune" will be out in April and this fall sees the release of a record that Anders Fridén already refers to as a "monster album" and yes I can agree on that. With this album the band will make a big step on moving forward to pass the next brick on the wall. How can I be so certain, well....I have heard the tunes already and just waiting to be able to spinn the new record on my Vinyl player.  But until then the members continue doing what they have always done: touring. The 4-piece will be doing shows in April and May together with D-A-D in Germany and Austria. You can count on Hong Faux delivering both weight and melody. Just like they always do.

And as they say "We are a do-it-yourself-band and have toured a lot and done everything on our own. We like what we do and our ambition is to combine these two components in a new and exciting way."

Are you neither afraid of some heavy guitars nor a little pop? Welcome to "Hello Neptune".

Todays tune "Coming Through The Rye" is the first taste from the upcoming record "Hello Neptune". The video is produced by Johan Andersson.

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Mind Crawler

Yesterday it happened something unusual, my wife and I went out together without working ... wow, something like that does not happen very often nowadays, unfortunately. This time we made a visit to Debaser strand and additionally we got lots of great music, in which we witnessed this year's best live concert so far. Blood and Sword and Fritz's Corner presented "Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats" and "Dean Allen Foyd", a very nice music menu.

The British hard rockers Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats have spent the fall as the opening act for Black Sabbath European tour and played recently before a boiling Friends Arena.

The band formed in 2009 in Cambridge , UK, and released their debut album "Volume 1 " the following year. Their proper break came with the sequel "Bloodlust" 2011 on Rise Above Records, with a sound described as a cross between Black Sabbath, The Stooges , and the original Alice Cooper band.

In April 2013 the band released their third album "Mind Control", got hailed by music journalists worldwide and since then the band has toured the world to full houses, both by themselves and with Black Sabbath.

Support on the show in Stockholm was the Swedish band Dean Allen Foyd!

The concert was a night to remember!

Todays tune "Mind Crawler" is the second single from Uncle Acid's acclaimed third album, Mind Control. The 7" vinyl features an exclusive b-side, Get on Home - a brand new recording of a song originally written and recorded by Charles Manson.

The band also made a video for the single, directed by Marc Morris it is a paranoia-inducing sensory assault fully capturing sacrifice of social niceties whereby goat skulls, nuns, acid tabs and ritual sex sit alongside trash culture, exploitation movies, rolling news and grainy TV clips of Jim Jones and Charles Manson.
