Doug Seegers - Going Down To The River

New week, which means that a new album shall be crowned to "Record Of The Week". I do not know if I'm completely way off now, but by a coincidence I listened to a record in a genre of music which I usually do not play so much, however this swings really good in my ear and I think that I soon will get some gray hair...heh.

The album I have in mind is "Going Down To The River" by Doug Seegers (Douglas Seegers), who is an American country music artist, guitarist and songwriter.

The best thing about this album is of course that the truly talented Doug Seegers, the homeless man from Jill's porch, got a second chance in life. The man who became known to the Swedish people when he appeared in the TV show Jill's porch on March 5, 2014. Seegers, who at the time was homeless, sitting on a bench in Nashville when the Swedish production team from Eyeworks ran into him. Doug performed his song Going Down To The River as Jill Johnson and Magnus Carlson liked the tune so much that they wanted to record the song in Johnny Cash's old studio and build the final section around Doug, his song and background.

The album contains some charming duets with Emmylou Harris and Buddy Miller (where Doug Seegers reminiscent of Hank Williams). He has a real emotional voice where the years homeless on Nashville's streets can be heard in each quatrain, the feel in every breath, it is genuine, touching and very beautiful.

Todays tune is the amazing title track from "Going Down To The River". Here together with Jill Johnson and Magnus Carlson.

Anthrax - Anti-social

The American thrash metal heads Anthrax from New York City was the festivals most classic act and suits perfect as a Sunday Classic.

The band formed in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker. Due to the raucous music on its early releases, the group was raved as one of the leaders of the thrash metal scene from the 1980s. When the movement began to gain a major following, Anthrax was ranked as one of the genre's "big four", alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. As of 2014, the band has released ten studio albums, multiple singles, and an EP featuring American hip hop group Public Enemy.

Todays tune "Antisocial" is a song by the French hard rock band Trust, from their album Répression. The song was written by Bernie Bonvoisin and Norbert Krief. Anthrax covered the song, using the alternate English lyrics, on their 1988 album State of Euphoria. Their cover of the song also appears on the second disc of their compilation album, Anthrology: No Hit Wonders (1985-1991), along with a version featuring the verses sung in French.

Kings Of Leon - Sex on Fire

Another big American Alternative Rock band that did play at Bråvalla, Kings of Leon from Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 1999. The band is composed of brothers Anthony Caleb Followill (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Ivan Nathan Followill (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Michael Jared Followill (bass guitar, backing vocals), with their cousin Cameron Matthew Followill (lead guitar, backing vocals).

Todays tune "Sex on Fire" is most likely on the set-list, the tune is the first single released from Kings of Leon's fourth studio album "Only by the Night".

The song gave Kings of Leon their first number-one single in Australia, Finland, Ireland and the United Kingdom, charting at the top-spot on digital downloads alone in the latter country, before its physical release. In September 2009 it was Britain's second most-downloaded digital single ever. Along with all of these achievements, in 2008, the song earned the band their first Grammy nominations. The song was nominated for Best Rock Song, and won the award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. In addition, the album earned a nomination for Best Rock Album. Channel V Australia named the song as the third biggest hit of 2008.

Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name

2013 was the premiere year for Bråvalla Festival and what a success! The festival had 50.000 attendants and broke Swedish festival history by receiving the title as the largest festival throughout Sweden ever to be recorded and this year might even be bigger than last year....coming back to that some other day.

This year, from June 26th to June 28th 2014 we invite you to be a part of that grand festivity. The festival will take place at Bråvalla Flygfält, on the outskirts of Norrköping and walking distance from the tram station.

Same thing as last year the line up is pretty spread up in all the styles. Here are some of the bands that plays here:

Iron Maiden among Kings Of Leon, Kanye West, Anthrax, Alesso, Belle & Sebastian, Bad Religion, Bring Me The Horizon, Bombus, Laleh, Clutch, Dropkick Murphys, The Afghan Whigs, The Offspring, The Hives, Lana Del Rey, We Came As Romans, Trivium plus many more.

Todays tune "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is a tune taken from the third studio album "The Number of the Beast", released in March 1982 by British heavy metal band Iron Maiden.

The song describes a man's thoughts just before being sent to the gallows. He begins to feel terror and realizes he really is afraid of dying, despite claims that he's not ("tears flow, but why am I crying?/after all, I'm not afraid of dying/don't I believe that there never is an end?"). At the end of the vocal section, the man gets executed; this is followed by a long instrumental section, culminating in his ambiguous final words, "Hallowed be thy name".

The is a song written by Steve Harris and it has been acclaimed as one of the greatest heavy metal songs of all time. The song includes 2 guitar solos: the first is played by Dave Murray, and the second was played by Adrian Smith between 1982 and 1988 and by Janick Gers from 1990.

"Hallowed Be Thy Name" has remained in almost all of the band's set-lists since the album's recording, which Allmusic describes it as "perhaps the most celebrated of the band's extended epics; it's the tale of a prisoner about to be hanged, featuring some of Harris' most philosophical lyrics." Several band-members have since stated that it is one of their favourite tracks, with Bruce Dickinson describing it as "fantastic" and that performing it live is like "narrating a movie to the audience."

It is the most covered song by the band with fourteen different versions by artists like Dream Theater, Machine Head, Cradle of Filth, and Iced Earth. Iron Maiden also recorded this song as part of EMI's television series 'Live from Abbey Road'. The band recorded a newer version of this track in 2006 and it was used as a B-side on the "Different World" single. In the lyrics of the song, the motif of Gallows Pole explicitly appears, which may allow a link to many works of art involving this motif and also may allow the song to be analyzed in a wider context.

Guitarist Janick Gers has stated in interviews that it is his favourite Iron Maiden song to play. The 2012 Maiden England World Tour marks the first time the song has not been included in the band's set list since its creation.

Tygers of Pan Tang - She

The tiger takes another bite from its newly sharpen tee, the heavy metal band "Tygers Of Pan Tang", part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal wave. They formed in 1978 in Whitley Bay, England, and were active until 1987. The band reformed in 1999 and continue to record and perform.

The British NWOBHM veterans Tygers Of Pan Tang are still around, that's pretty cool. The album “Ambush”, was produced by Chris Tsangarides, which produced two of the band’s iconic releases of the 80s ("Wildcat" and "Spellbound"). And it's a well crafted album that include all the right riffings and solos mixed with a great rhythm section to keep them on track, all in a classic way of course.

Todays tune "She" taken from the latest release "Ambush".

I write this with a bleeding heart and choose a tune that have the lyrics that speaks the same language as the feelings I have today, the song is about someone who unfortunately will not have the time or desire to even bother about what's happen or make things easy for both parts, but choose to think about them self, lye's and keeps on hurting that will make my life a hell. The lyrics says it all. Tune Of The Day will take a break for now (I do have some tunes in the pipeline that will be publish the upcoming day, last post will be on the 30th of June), dunno when I will be back again, time will tell and when the greatest grief has subsided, maybe then, right now I have no joy to write any longer.

The Quireboys - What Do You Want From Me?

The Quireboys have released a new five-track EP to mark the beginning of their 30th anniversary onslaught.

The year is 1984.

The miners’ strike is in full swing. Apple sells its first Macintosh home computer and Whitesnake release Slide It In. Prince Harry is born……and the band that would become The Quireboys makes its infamous debut at a heaving pub in Putney.

Thirty years down the line and it’s time to celebrate a golden age of music with the ultimate party band.

In 2014 The Quireboys continue to fuse retro-fuelled hooks with rock n roll evolution, the new album Black Eyed Sons is the perfect soundtrack to your summer.

Following hot on the heels of last year’s critically acclaimed Beautiful Curse, the band’s biggest-selling record since their early 90s heyday.

Black Eyed Sons, was produced by the legendary Chris Tsangarides and represents yet another career high for a band bang in form.

Spike (vocals), Guy Griffin (guitars), Paul Guerin (guitars) and Keith Weir (keys) have spent more than a decade rebuilding and revitalising one of British rock n roll’s best-loved brands. Black Eyed Sons is the triumphant result.

Packaged alongside a CD of The Quireboys’ main stage acoustic set at 2013’s Sweden Rock festival – in front of 40,000 fans – and a live 7 CAM shot DVD featuring the London leg of last year’s Beautiful Curse tour, this is a must-have for long-time fans and new converts alike.

The Quireboys are an English hard rock band formed in 1984 in London, England, with strong ties to Newcastle. When the band formed they were originally known as The Queerboys and later as the London Quireboys in the United States, settling at last with their current name.

“I’ve always felt like I’m 30-years-old,” jokes Spike. “So this is our time. And I’d just like to raise a toast to the next 30 years.”

Todays tune "What Do You Want From Me?" is the title track from the latest 5-track EP, enjoy!

Tesla - Love Song

New week, time to crown this week's album, this time it will actually be a classic. And I'm thinking about the Sacramento act Tesla who made a pretty impact on me when I was younger.

The record I have in mind for this week is a live album "Five Man Acoustical Jam", released in 1990 by the band Tesla, using acoustic guitars instead of the electric guitars which hard rock/heavy metal bands such as Tesla were known for.

The biggest hit from the album was the song "Signs", a cover version originally from the band Five Man Electrical Band, who also had a hit with the song (Tesla's version included a few uses of "fuck" not in the original version). Other songs included "Love Song" and "The Way It Is" (hits from their previous album The Great Radio Controversy) and covers of The Rolling Stones' "Mother's Little Helper", Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Lodi", and The Beatles' "We Can Work It Out". It was recorded live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the Trocadero Theatre. Tesla is an American rock band formed in Sacramento, California in late 1982. They have sold 14 million albums in the United States.

Todays tune, it's a bit of a tribute, I dedicate this one to todays birthday child "Thetania", you are not forgotten, so Happy Birthday Thetania. The tune "Love Song" is a power ballad by the rock band Tesla, from this weeks "Record Of The Week".

Judas Priest - Electric Eye

Sunday, time for a classic tune, today we play "Electric Eye", a song by British heavy metal band Judas Priest, from their 1982 album Screaming for Vengeance, and released as a single later that year. It has become a staple at concerts, usually played as the first song.

Benediction and Helloween, amongst many other bands, have covered this song.

Musically, the song is in the key of E minor, and its guitar solo is played by Glenn Tipton.

"Electric Eye" is featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories for PSP and PlayStation 2. It is also a playable track in Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s as a master track, including "The Hellion", and it also appears on Guitar Hero Smash Hits. Additionally, it is available for download on Rock Band, as of 22 April 2009, as part of the entire Screaming for Vengeance album download, or as a single song. It was also featured in the second trailer for the video game Brütal Legend.

This song is referenced in the movie Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, in the song "Break in-City (Storm the Gate!)".

"Electric Eye" is an allusion to the book Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, in the use of the name of the pseudo-omniscient satellite that watches over the community at all times. In this dystopia, the form of government, Ingsoc (Newspeak for English Socialism), is utterly totalitarian, and if citizens are caught rebelling in any manner, they "disappear". The song has been called "prescient" for its depiction of a modern surveillance state.

The song is usually played right after the album's intro "The Hellion" during live concerts. An exception is during the tour for the album Demolition, in which the band went straight into "Electric Eye" with no intro, which can be heard on their live album Live in London. "The Hellion" was recently used for a commercial for the 2011 Honda Odyssey.

The song was played live at the 2011 Revolver Magazine Golden God Awards show by Duff McKagan's Loaded, with vocals by Slipknot and Stone Sour's Corey Taylor and guitar by The Sex Pistols' Steve Jones.

Todays tune "Electric Eye" is taken from the eighth studio album "Screaming for Vengeance". The album, considered the band's commercial breakthrough, sold in excess of 5 million unit worldwide and has been certified double platinum in the United States and platinum in Canada.

Slash - World On Fire

"World On Fire" is the title track and first taste of the new album from Slash (GUNS N' ROSES, VELVET REVOLVER) and his backing band, Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators.

"World On Fire" is the third album to be made available under the Slash solo banner, will be released on September 15 via Slash's own label Dik Hayd International distributed through Roadrunner Records (Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America).

The cover artwork for the "World On Fire" album was designed by American contemporary artist Ron English.

"World On Fire" will be made available four weeks in advance of the U.K. general release as a Classic Rock Fanpack, which consists of: * The full album * 116-page magazine featuring exclusive interviews with Slash, the band, producer Michael Baskette and cover artist Ron English. A Slash and Myles track-by-track breakdown. Exclusive pictures from the recording sessions as well as a brand new shoot, competition and much more. * Giant double-sided A1 poster * Metal pin badge

Slash told Music Radar about the new CD, "I wrote the majority of the music when I was on the 'Apocalyptic Love' tour. You know, just sitting around in dressing rooms and hotel rooms for a year, I accumulated all these ideas. Then in September [2013] I sat down and went through everything I'd recorded on my voice memo on my phone and picked out about 20 different ideas then we went into pre-production in October and just started jamming. We were there for a couple of months, holed up in Mates rehearsal studio in Los Angeles. There was the whole writing process then once we had all the songs down we rehearsed the shit out of it, and then we brought the producer, Mike Baskette, in. And so we went through another phase of fine tooth-combing everything and getting the arrangements together. Myles came down and started working on his vocal parts… and by the time we were done with all that we were ready to go in and just bang the stuff out. It was a very quick process in the studio."

He continued: "The one thing about this record is that it was almost like it wrote itself, it was very effortless. And that happens very rarely, when there's a certain energy that carries the creative process and it's almost like you're not in control of it and you just ride that wave. That's how this record was. I can't think of any outside influence other than just going with this creative flow."

Slash also spoke about the musical chemistry between him and his bandmates, telling Music Radar: "I think basically everyone's a great rock 'n' roll player. They're real rock musicians at heart — deep down. So when we get together, we've built up a certain chemistry. We started out with a certain kind of chemistry and we're just evolving from there. At this point, everybody feels very comfortable just being themselves and doing what it is that they do best. It's just an unsaid, natural synergy that happens. For example, this is probably one of Brent's [Fitz, drummer] best records as a player, being able to do all the things he wanted to do. And the same with Todd [Kerns, bass] and the same for me. But having such a great rhythm section means I have to really fuckin' put together some great guitar bits on top of it. The other thing that's cool is Mike Baskette was great. One of the reasons why I really wanted to work with him was he just loves guitars and it's rare to get anyone who brings any ideas other than the ones you bring to the table as far as sounds and tones or anything like that. And that's a limitation: you can only do as much as you know how to do in the studio and sometimes you really need to work with an engineer who knows something in the recording studio that you don't know. That's what Mike brought into it. He was so enthusiastic about getting guitar sounds. He would put as much time into that as I could possibly put it in — sometimes more so. It was really inspiring. I haven't had that in a long, long time."

Todays tune "World On Fire" is the title track from the upcoming album. Enjoy!

Rolling Stones - Not Fade Away

Happy Midsummer or as we say in Swedish "Glad Midsommar", today most of the Swedes party, dancing around the pole, drinking alot etc. I will do some sort of celebration today, but it will be easy, very easy as I am working as usal, another festival again.

One band that fits good during a evening like this is Rolling Stones, a band that it out touring atm and soon they will do a stop in Sweden on their "14 On Fire Tour", a tour which started on 21 February 2014 in Abu Dhabi. It is a follow-up to the 50 & Counting... tour which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the band. This tour is very much similar to the 50 & Counting... just like the "Urban Jungle" portion of the Stones' Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour in 1990 was similar to the "Steel Wheels" portion in 1989. "14 On Fire" has the same stage design, setlist structure, and clothing/merchandise as 50 & Counting… Also, Mick Taylor is a guest throughout this tour just like 50 & Counting...

So a tune with the Stones this evening then, "Not Fade Away" is a song credited to Buddy Holly (originally under his first and middle names, Charles Hardin) and Norman Petty (although Petty's co-writing credit is most likely a formality) and first recorded by Holly's band The Crickets.

In 1964, The Rolling Stones' cover of "Not Fade Away", with its strong emphasis on the Bo Diddley beat, became a major hit in Britain and served as the A-side of the band's first US single.

The Rolling Stones version of "Not Fade Away" was one of their first classic hits. Recorded in late January 1964 and released by Decca on February 21, 1964, with "Little by Little" as the B-side. In March 1964 it was also the Rolling Stones' first single release in the United States, on the London Records label, with "I Wanna Be Your Man" as the B-side (briefly preceded by "Stoned", which had immediately been withdrawn). "Not Fade Away" was not on the UK version of their debut album, The Rolling Stones, but was the opening track of the US version released a month later as England's Newest Hitmakers. It was a mainstay at Rolling Stones concerts in their early years, usually opening the shows. It was revived in that capacity for their 1994-95 Voodoo Lounge Tour.
