Shinedown - Simple Man

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Simple Man" is the last track on side one of LYNYRD SKYNYRD's debut album, "(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)".

The song is one of LYNYRD SKYNYRD's most popular songs. Since the song became available for digital download, it has become LYNYRD SKYNYRD's third best-selling digital song after "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird." It has sold 1,333,000 copies in the U.S. as of November 2013.

"Simple Man" is written in the key of A minor/C major, though all guitars were tuned down a half step, effectively making it G# minor/B. The song begins with an acoustic arpeggiated chord sequence made up of the chords C major, G major and A minor (though with the tuned-down guitars, effective progression of B major, F# major and G# minor). This intro is accompanied by a bass line and cymbals before the drums and vocals come in for the verse. Lyrically the song is about a mother talking to her child about life, inspired by the passing of Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother.[2] The chorus of the song includes electric guitars imitating sections of the arpeggiated intro progression. The guitar solo is performed by Gary Rossington.

Today's version is made by SHINEDOWN, "Leave A Whisper" paved the way for Shinedown's successful second album, "Us And Them", and was re-released on June 15, 2004, to incorporate a cover version of LYNYRD SKYNYRD's "Simple Man".

Ty Segall & Cory Hanson - She Is A Beam

Ty Segall has returned with “She’s a Beam”, a new collaborative single with WAND frontman Cory Hanson. Cory and Ty have decided to release the much anticipated single "She's a Beam", along with "Milk Bird Flyer". Both songs were recorded 5 years ago, and were recently rediscovered. They will be donating 100% of the first week's sales of both songs to Black Lives Matter LA. The single was released February 7, 2021.

Unfurling like a five-minute jam-out session, “She’s a Beam” sees Segall and Hanson working pure psychedelic magic. For about 90 seconds we hear some foggy vocals, but the rest is dedicated to the two musicians playing off one another with their respective guitars.

Today's clip with Ty Segall & Cory Hanson performing "She Is A Beam" live on the Logging Road at Pickathon. Recorded August 2, 2015.

Eddie Vedder - Matter Of Time

PEARL JAMs leader Eddie Vedder debuted the solo song "Matter Of Time" at Venture Into Cures, a virtual benefit for the EB Research Partnership, the foundation that Eddie and Jill Vedder set up. At the same event, he also played a new version of "Say Hi", a song he’s been playing live for a while but never released. Today he’s released both songs as a fundraising single.

The single is raising money to find a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a life-threatening genetic disorder that makes people’s skin fragile and sensitive. “Matter Of Time” is a song written especially about this, and about the agonizing wait for a cure that might be on the horizon.

On “Matter Of Time,” Vedder sings tenderly over a spare piano arrangement. The “Matter Of Time” video is an animated clip about the people who suffer from Epidermolysis Bullosa. Watch it below.

To help fund research aimed at treating and curing EB, please donate to the EB Research Partnership: https://www.ebresearch.org/donate.html

Cat Power - I Found A Reason

Thursday, time for a cover.

"I Found A Reason" is a tune written by Lou Reed and is taken of the fourth studio album "Loaded", by American rock band THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, released in November 1970 by Atlantic Records' subsidiary label Cotillion.

"Loaded" was a commercial effort aimed at radio play, and the album's title refers to Atlantic's request that the band produce an album "loaded with hits", with a double meaning about the word "loaded", that can also mean "full of drugs" or "really high on drugs". Singer/bassist Doug Yule said, "On Loaded there was a big push to produce a hit single, there was that mentality, which one of these is a single, how does it sound when we cut it down to 3.5 minutes, so that was a major topic for the group at that point. And I think that the third album to a great extent shows a lot of that in that a lot of those songs were designed as singles and if you listen to them you can hear the derivation, like this is sort of a Phil Spector-ish kind of song, or this is that type of person song."

Reed was critical of the album's final mix. He left THE VELVET UNDERGROUND on August 23, 1970, but "Loaded" was not released until three months later, in November. After its release, Reed maintained in interviews that it had been re-edited and resequenced without his consent.

Today's cover version of "I Found A Reason" is made by CAT POWER, the stage name and eponymous band of American singer-songwriter Chan Marshall, the tune is taken of the fifth album "The Covers Record", released in 2000 on Matador Records.

Several songs on the album have been used in films, where today's pick "I Found a Reason" was used in (Saving Face, Dandelion andV for Vendetta). Enjoy this beautiful cover!

James Gillespie - Mad World

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Mad World" is a 1982 song by the British band TEARS FOR FEARS. Written by Roland Orzabal and sung by bassist Curt Smith, it was the band's third single release and first chart hit, reaching number 3 on the UK Singles Chart in November 1982. Both "Mad World" and its B-side, "Ideas As Opiates", appeared on the band's debut LP "The Hurting" (1983).

"Mad World" has since been covered by various artists, most notably by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules for the soundtrack of the film Donnie Darko in 2001. This version was a UK number one hit and won Orzabal his second Ivor Novello Award in 2003.

Today's cover is made by a raspy quality to his voice, a bluesy melodic sensibility, and a guitar in hand, U.K. singer/songwriter James Gillespie became a viral sensation in 2017 with intimate singles such as "What You Do."

Born in England, raised in Scotland, and based in London, Gillespie found steady employment on the European summer and U.K. folk festival circuits for several years before releasing his official debut single. He toured with TURIN BRAKES in 2014; by that time, he had secured endorsements for his guitar and pedal station as well as voice-related electronics. However, it was his single "What You Do," released in February 2017, that first brought him to the attention of an audience numbering in the millions. Later the same year, his cover of P!NK's "Don't Let Me Get Me" also went viral, and he was invited to join the pop star on-stage during select tour stops. In 2018, singles like "Dead In The Water" and "Lost" kept him in the playlist rotation. When it came time for Gillespie to record his full-length debut, he called on Two Inch Punch (Sam Smith, Years & Years) and regular collaborator Andy Hall Hall to co-produce.

Today's tune "Mad World", written by TEARS FOR FEARS, performed by James Gillespie, taken from his album "Safe.", the clip is a (Live Session), enjoy!

Witchcraft - Elegantly Expressed Depression

Magnus Pelander’s WITCHCRAFT have existed at the forefront of occult tinged classic rock ever since their formation in the year 2000, when Magnus decided to form the band so that he could record a tribute to his idols Roky Erickson and PENTAGRAMs Bobby Liebling. The track in question "No Angel Or Demon" was released in 2002 and was the spark that ignited WITCHCRAFTs now illustrious career from their self-titled debut in 2004 through to the wondrous "Nucleus" in 2016.

The band’s first new album in four years, titled "Black Metal", is an entirely acoustic affair. Listen to a first tune below, taken from "Black Metal", the haunting "Elegantly Expressed Depression".

The album will be released on Vinyl, CD and in Digital formats on May 1st 2020 via Nuclear Blast.

Pre-Order: https://nblast.de/WitchcraftBlackMetal
Pre-Save: https://nblast.de/WitchcraftPreSave

WITCHCRAFT has also announced to play a few selected shows this year, such as at Desertfest Berlin and London.

From the press release:

Now, Magnus takes WITCHCRAFT in a brave new direction, setting forth into entirely new territory. Exhibiting the pure emotion that has always lived at the core of the band’s work, by moving forward alone. The band’s first new album in four years, "Black Metal", is an entirely acoustic release. From the opener, and first single, "Elegantly Expressed Depression", it’s clear that this new facet of the band’s sound allows the rawness and fragility to shine in an entirely new light.

The minimalism of Bill Callaghan, the tenderness of Elliot Smithand the air of slight discomfort that could only be WITCHCRAFT combine to make this record a truly unique spectacle, not only in the band’s catalogue, but in the world of guitar music as it stands in 2020.

Tom Petty - Don't Fade on Me

Another big musican has fallen. The rock icon Tom Petty suffered cardiac arrest early in the morning of October 2, 2017, and died that night at the UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, California.

In honor of Tom Petty's passing we look back and play a sensitive and wonderful tune. RIP Tom Petty.

I remember you so clearly
The first one through the door
I return to find you drifting
Too far from the shore

That's the first line from "Don't Fade on Me", taken from one of his solo albums "Wildflowers". One of Petty’s best and most underrated albums with Rick Rubin production, coming off recent work with Johnny Cash, focused on intimacy and stripped-down production. Petty has never sounded more vulnerable than he does on this acoustic track.

A solo acoustic guitar performance by Tom Petty (along with Mike Campbell), this bluesy, folk-tinged ballad is strongly reminiscent of Bob Dylan and some of Stephen Still' songs such as "4+20" and "Singin' Call." A great modal-D tuning guitar exercise, it's probably the most overtly bluesy thing that Petty has ever attempted, and when you listen to it, it's surprising that he hadn't done things like this before. The stark imagery of being "the first one through the door" and "too weary to even leave your bed" is perfect for this song, which looks back at the end of a relationship with almost no hope.

Wildflowers is the second solo studio album by American musician Tom Petty, released on November 1, 1994. The album was the first released by Petty after signing a contract with Warner Bros. Records (where he had recorded as part of the Traveling Wilburys) and the first of three albums produced by Rick Rubin. The album was certified 3x platinum in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America.

The album features all members of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, with the exception of drummer Stan Lynch. Steve Ferrone plays drums on Wildflowers and would join the band officially the following year. However, the album was not credited to the Heartbreakers because, in Petty's words, "Rick (Rubin) and I both wanted more freedom than to be strapped into five guys." Freedom notwithstanding, Petty chose to use most of his regular band as session players, demonstrating his comfort with that format. Rolling Stone placed Wildflowers at number 12 on their list of the best albums of the 1990s. Guitar World placed the album at number 49 in their "Superunknown: 50 Iconic Albums That Defined 1994" list.

In April 2015, when Petty's back catalog was released in High-resolution audio, this was one of only two albums not included in the series (Songs and Music from "She's the One" was the other one), but a hi-res version is available on Pono Music. Thomas Earl Petty (October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017) was an American musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He was also a member and co-founder of the late 1980s supergroup THE TRAVELING WILBURYS, and his early band MUDCRUTCH.

Petty recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, many of which are mainstays on adult contemporary and classic rock radio. His music became popular among younger generations. In his career, Petty sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. In 2002, Petty was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Today's tune "Don't Fade on Me" is for you Tom.

Shinedown - How Did You Love

The Rockers SHINEDOWN from Jacksonville, Florida released "How Did You Love" in the last quarter of 2016, a tune that spins more than once every day on the radio, somehow it has hooked me and I can hear my self from time to time humming on the tune. The tune was released as their fourth single from their fifth studio album, Threat to Survival.

SHINEDOWN was formed by Brent Smith in 2001 after the dissolution of his prior band, Smith, still with a contract with record label Atlantic Records, recruited the band's original lineup of Jasin Todd as guitarist, Brad Stewart on bass, and Barry Kerch on drums. Consistent for the first two album cycles, a few lineup changes followed in the late 2000s, eventually stabilizing with Smith and Kerch, as remaining members alongside newcomers Zach Myers on guitar, and Eric Bass on bass. The group has released five albums: Leave a Whisper (2003), Us and Them (2005), The Sound of Madness (2008), Amaryllis (2012), and Threat to Survival (2015). SHINEDOWN has sold more than ten million albums worldwide.

A cool acoustic & piano version was released as a digital single, see the link below.

The fifth studio album "Threat to Survival" was released on September 18, 2015.

Martin Rubashov - Hideout

Martin Rubashov is a Swedish musician who released his debut album “The Watcher of the Skies” in 2013. Starting his musical journey in the late 90’s, Martin has also been playing with bands such as; MUSTASCH, MARBLE ARCH, LIBRAH. He is also well known for his radio career as the morning host for the radio station Bandit Rock in Stockholm, Sweden.

Martin Rubashovs solo music is well made, he sings excellent and play really well, he has a really dynamic sound and play with a melancholic acoustic vibe that is influenced by the rock genre, Martin is certainly a trustful companion that can take his thing pretty far.

Todays tune "Hideout" is a brand new single from "Bollnäs Martin" The Video is Shot, directed and edited by Magnus Ewald. Drone footage by Janne Jansson.

Tesla - Love Song

New week, time to crown this week's album, this time it will actually be a classic. And I'm thinking about the Sacramento act Tesla who made a pretty impact on me when I was younger.

The record I have in mind for this week is a live album "Five Man Acoustical Jam", released in 1990 by the band Tesla, using acoustic guitars instead of the electric guitars which hard rock/heavy metal bands such as Tesla were known for.

The biggest hit from the album was the song "Signs", a cover version originally from the band Five Man Electrical Band, who also had a hit with the song (Tesla's version included a few uses of "fuck" not in the original version). Other songs included "Love Song" and "The Way It Is" (hits from their previous album The Great Radio Controversy) and covers of The Rolling Stones' "Mother's Little Helper", Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Lodi", and The Beatles' "We Can Work It Out". It was recorded live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the Trocadero Theatre. Tesla is an American rock band formed in Sacramento, California in late 1982. They have sold 14 million albums in the United States.

Todays tune, it's a bit of a tribute, I dedicate this one to todays birthday child "Thetania", you are not forgotten, so Happy Birthday Thetania. The tune "Love Song" is a power ballad by the rock band Tesla, from this weeks "Record Of The Week".

Baroness - Take My Bones Away

This weeks album will be another new record with a band that I really look up to, both music creation and the artistic thought of the band, the singer in the band possesses an amazing artist quality's a nice plus, his work is quite stunning. Today as we dig a little light us into the Savannah, Georgia’s own sludge metal titans Baroness's latest work Yellow & Green.

Apparently it was no longer sufficient to have one color to cover the volume of ideas for the band's third album release in 2012, as follow-up to up to 2007's Red Album and the 2009's Blue Record has become a 18-track double-record named Yellow & Green. The double album was released on July 17, 2012 through Relapse Records

The record is divided in two slices, ie two colors. The first (Yellow) is little bit of a Baroness as we know, a with the chugging, dirtier sound, but contains a lot of new creativity of softer tunes with many beautiful melodies. The second record (Green), is more reserved, quieter, more fine tuned. Vocal part is softer, the harmonies are down to earth. You could sum this up and say that they swimming in classic roots/americana, early 90s indie/alternative, pop/punk, emo/post-hardcore, radio pop, folk, hard rock and so forth. It takes a while for me to acquainting myself with the accustomed sound and above all the softer song, but Yellow & Green is a record to bury itself in.

With this record, chances are that Baroness fanbase will be two shared. It will possibly opening the band to a whole new audience, which feels a bit more easily accessible and probably lose the old as it has become too commercialized and poppy. But I like this and I love bands that truly developed and step out of their comfort zone. I feel that I will spend much time with this record.

Todays tune "Take My Bones Away" is picked from "Yellow" record of the latest release "Yellow & Green"

Tenacious D - Rize Of The Fenix

Tenacious D will never die!
Thats the message on this fantastic,  amazing fantasy video, which is full of dreamed up scenarios.

As usual its brought in with a very great tune!
I just love them, love to see their creativity in both video, lyrics and music.
What we might didnt knew is that John Konesky plays electric guitar, John Spiker and Dave Grohl on drums, thats something huh !

Jack Black stated on David Letterman that he had an idea for a song called "Rize of the Fenix", which he described as a "rise from the ashes" workout song similar to "Eye of the Tiger".
Then it came :D
