The Godfathers - Birth, School, Work, Death

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Birth, School, Work, Death" is the title tune from the alternative rock band THE GODFATHERS, released in 1988.

THE GODFATHERS are an English alternative rock/new wave band from London, England, with strong influences from R&B and punk. They were formed by Peter and Chris Coyne after the demise of THE SID PRESLEY EXPERIENCE in 1985, joined by Mike Gibson (guitar), Kris Dollimore (guitar) & George Mazur (drums). Fellow TSPE member and later GODFATHER, Del Bartle, went on to form THE UNHOLY TRINITY with drummer Kevin Murphy.

After independent single releases produced by Vic Maile, and collected on their debut album, "Hit By Hit", they signed to Epic Records in 1987. Extensive tours of the UK, Europe and the United States followed. Single and title track of their first album "Birth, School, Work, Death" made the U.S. Billboard Top 40 in 1988 after college radio and MTV airplay but the band were less commercially successful in the UK.

Albums "More Songs About Love and Hate" and "Unreal World" followed, with Chris Burrows replacing Kris Dollimore on guitar in time for the latter, after which THE GODFATHERS left Epic and released two albums on German label Intercord in the early 1990s. The band ceased activity in 2000.

In 2003 Peter Coyne and Kris Dollimore played briefly in a band called THE GERMANS with Rat Scabies, formerly of THE DAMNED.

Enjoy today's classic "Birth, School, Work, Death", a tune that MANHEAD covered in 2004 and LOCAL H in 2003.

Death - Keep On Knocking

Sunday, time for a classic.

DEATH is an American rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan, United States, in 1971 by brothers Bobby (bass, vocals), David (guitar), and Dannis (drums) Hackney.

The trio started out as a funk band but switched to rock after seeing a concert by THE WHO. Seeing Alice Cooper play was also an inspiration. Music critic Peter Margasak retrospectively wrote that David "pushed the group in a hard-rock direction that presaged punk, and while this certainly didn't help them find a following in the mid-70s, today it makes them look like visionaries." They are seen by many people as one of the first punk bands in the world. The band broke up in 1977 but reformed in 2009 when the Drag City label released their '70s demos for the first time.

Today's tune "Keep On Knocking" is taken from the album "...For The Whole World To See", a studio album released in 2009 and consisting of various demos originally recorded in the mid 1970s.

In 1975 the band entered a studio to record a 12-song album. After refusing to change their group's name, DEATH was turned away by Clive Davis of Columbia Records. Only seven songs were completed and the album was never released. The surviving songs were released as ...For the Whole World to See in 2009 by Drag City.

Just prior to and right after the record's release, the songs on "...For The Whole World To See" were performed live by Rough Francis, a band formed by the three sons of Death's original bassist. With the record's critical acclaim and praise from many other musicians, the two surviving members of Death reformed the band with a new guitarist to promote the record themselves.

The Video clip is from KUTX where they are playing "Keep on Knocking" Live in studio 1A June 26th 2013, enjoy!

Unleashed - Evil Dead

Thursday and it's time for a cover.

Time for a cover. "Evil Dead" is a tune by the American death metal band DEATH. Written by Chuck Schuldiner and was released on the debut studio "Scream Bloody Gore", released on May 25, 1987. It is considered by some to be "the first true death metal record".

Today's cover is made by the Swedish death metal band UNLEASHED. The tune was released as a bonus piece on the 10th studio album "As Yggdrasil Trembles". It was released on March 19, 2010, by Nuclear Blast Records. Enjoy!

Death - Voice Of The Soul

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Voice Of The Soul" is a tune by the American death metal band DEATH. It's taken from the bands seventh and final studio album "The Sound Of Perseverance", released on September 15, 1998, by Nuclear Blast. This is the only album to feature guitarist Shannon Hamm, drummer Richard Christy, and bassist Scott Clendenin.

"Voice Of The Soul" is an instrumental track that contrasts with almost every other work of the band in its inclusion of softer guitars and lack of percussion.

In an interview done in March 1999, Chuck Schuldiner stated that the acoustic guitar-driven "Voice of the Soul" was actually written during the "Symbolic" sessions. DEATH has produced only two instrumentals (the other being the more electric guitar driven "Cosmic Sea" from the album "Human"). The album also featured a cover of JUDAS PRIESTs "Painkiller", which shows Schuldiner attempting a different, high-pitched style of death growl more reminiscent of Rob Halford's original vocals and also singing for the first time with a clean voice through the end of the song. All the solos in the song are rewritten.

Some of the song names and music on "The Sound of Perseverance" was originally going to appear on the first "Control Denied" album, "The Fragile Art of Existence". Schuldiner himself denied this in an interview with Metal Maniacs in 1998 by saying that none of his compositions for "Control Denied" had been used to fill space for a DEATH album. Schuldiner implied that some "Control Denied" songs were used for "The Sound of Perseverance" in an interview with Scream Magazine in October 1999, when he stated that "The Fragile Art of Existence" contains a lot of music I didn't have in mind originally. Most of the material was completed in 1996-97. Also, Tim Aymar, in December 2010, confirmed that a few of the "Control Denied" songs had been, in his words, "'Deathized' and recorded on TSOP." When DEATH was signed on to Nuclear Blast, Schuldiner agreed to make one last DEATH album before moving forward with "Control Denied".

20th Anniversary 3LP Edition, Deluxe limited edition one time pressing of DEATH’s seminal final album, featuring gorgeous expanded packaging and a third LP featuring 10 bonus tracks!

Enjoy today's tune!

Swedish underground metal act NALE have released their first single and video, it's the title tune from the upcoming album "Death. Skulls. Satan"! The album will be released on 23rd of Mars on Black Lodge/Sound Pollution.

With a vicious blend of metal in the likes of PANTERA and THE HAUNTED with the fast paced rock of DANKO JONES and a punk fueled in-your-face attitude of MOTÖRHEAD. NALE delivers a high octane album with massive drive, heavy riffs, brutal vocals and groove that will leave necks, and hips, sore for days. This could surly be of one of Sweden’s hottest upcoming acts.

NALE was formed 2007.

Skogen - I Döden

Category Six:
 (Death)
taken from the annual hard rock evening.

Death, sensitive category for me. Specially as my sister passed away just before Christmas. Try to focus on tunes that have the death meaning wasn't easy even it should be pretty easy to set as most of the rock bands have a tune about death of some kind. So I decided to go deep into the bleak and dark area of music and try to keep it patriotic. The band that crawled on my doorstep was the Swedish SKOGEN (Forest) and "I Döden"(In Death) is a gloomy journey through hollow stone lands that places it's listener on a pedal of northern darkness and death!

Other tunes that was played during this category was.

ZOMBIEKRIG "Evigt Liv" - Cheif Rebel
(Great Choice from a Swedish Act)
LIK "Le Morte Homme" - Holm
(Excellent Swedish Death Metal)
DRACONIAN "Pale Tortured Blue" - PÖbrink
(Great pick from the Swedish Death/Doom metal band)
METAL ALLEGIANCE "Suffargette City" - Hellan
(Cool Cover of a Bowie classic)
DECAPITATED "Earth Scar" - MÖbrink
(Excellent Technical Polish Death Metal)
AMORPHIS "Death Of A King" - Eriksdotter
(Excellent Finnish Heavy Metal)
ÆTHER REALM "Death" - Sandström (Great New Discovery)
DR. LIVING DEAD "Terror Vision" - Sköldan (Cool Choice)
PARASITE INC "The Pulse of the Dead
" - Jens
(Jens Suprice with a New Discovery, Cool tune) SKOGEN "I Döden" - Stones

(Missing songs from two participants).

My Vinyl record with Skogen includes a real cool patch.

Today's tune "I Döden", the title tune from SKOGENs forth album, released 2014. The tune is filmed at Mörkaste Småland, Sweden, 2014.

Paradise Lost - Medusa

Monday, New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The Goth Kings of doom and death are back with a new album "Medusa".

It's their 15th record and it is a solid piece, a real musical work of art, with well crafted tunes with both mystery, magic and wisdom. "Medusa" is the next step from "The Plague Within" and a great flirt with the roots of their musical history.

Guitarists Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy does an incredible work with melancholic melodies and inspired riffage, this is together with the rhythm section of Steve Edmondson and the new recruit the creative youngster Waltteri Väyrynen (also of Mackintosh’s VALLENFYRE) who replaces Adrian Erlandsson. Waltteri is an amazing drummer that fits great in the band even if he is just a kid 👦 Nick Holmes vocals is prodigious and his lyrical content is both interesting and touching. Working with producer Jaime Gómez Arellano (ULVER, CATHEDRAL) was a good choice, the production is thick and smooth with it's raw sound.

The album opens up gigantic with the mysterious "Fearless Sky" to move over to impressing bleeding death/doom metal tunes like "Gods of Ancient" and "From the Gallows". The albums first single "The Longest Winter" is one of the more gothic tunes on the album, sludgy and heavy along with "Shrines". "Medusa", the title tune is a beautifully crushing piece. The upbeat tempo tune "Blood And Chaos", with its irresistible catchiness got to be the second single from the album. "No Passage for the Dead" is one of the tunes that fall off the normal spectra of the bands typical sound and takes a deep, heavy doomish progressive path. Deep, highly-distorted guitars on "Until The Grave" in a more traditional way and the album ends up dark and heavy with "Symbolic Virtue"

Sum: "Medusa" is another solid release from PARADISE LOST.

Today's tune "Until The Grave" is taken from "Medusa", enjoy!

Death - Zombie Ritual

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Scream Bloody Gore" is the debut studio album by American Death metal band DEATH, released on May 25, 1987 by Combat Records. It was considered "the first true death metal record". Chuck Schuldiner plays bass and guitar, wrote all the songs on the album and provided all the vocals. John Hand is noted on the cover as playing rhythm guitar, though this was incorrect and Hand was only in the band for a short period and was not on the recording. This is also the only DEATH album to feature drummer Chris Reifert, who had joined for the Mutilation demo.

Perseverance Holdings, Ltd. and Relapse Records reissued the album on May 20, 2016 on CD, vinyl, and cassette. The album was remastered for this release, and also included the original Florida session as well as recordings of rehearsals performed in 1986.

"Scream Bloody Gore" was actually recorded twice, with the second Los Angeles-based session being released as the complete album by label Combat Records (later Relativity). It was first recorded in Florida, although only the rhythm guitar and drum tracks were recorded. The track listing consisted of "Torn to Pieces", "Legion of Doom", "Scream Bloody Gore", "Sacrificial Cunt" (later shortened to "Sacrificial" because the label asked the band to do so, possibly because "they didn't want to get P.M.R.C. on their case"), "Mutilation", "Land of No Return", and "Baptized in Blood". The label were unsatisfied after hearing the initial mix, so Schuldiner and Reifert re-recorded the album in California with Randy Burns as producer. Once returning to Florida, the first session was released as a promotional tape, and was eventually bootlegged. "Legion of Doom" was a longtime staple of DEATHs rehearsals and live shows, and was indeed the first song written, reaching back to when they were known as Mantas.

Despite the many songs written during DEATHs demo days, only half of them were re-recorded for the album, the rest being new compositions. "Infernal Death" and "Baptized in Blood" originally appeared on the Infernal Death demo. "Zombie Ritual", "Mutilation" and "Land of No Return" originally appeared on the Mutilation demo, and "Evil Dead" and "Beyond the Unholy Grave" were originally on Death By Metal. "Beyond the Unholy Grave" and "Land of No Return" were also cut from the album, though were included on the re-release, with the live audio tracks taken from the Ultimate Revenge II video.

Certain songs on the album were inspired by horror movies. For example, "Regurgitated Guts" was inspired by the 1980 film City of the Living Dead (a.k.a. The Gates of Hell), "Beyond the Unholy Grave" was influenced by the 1981 film The Beyond, and "Zombie Ritual" was inspired by the 1979 film Zombie, all of which were directed by Italian director Lucio Fulci.

DEATH was an American death metal band from Orlando, Florida, founded in 1983 by guitarist and vocalist Chuck Schuldiner. DEATH is considered to be one of the most influential bands in heavy metal and a pioneering force in death metal. Its debut album, Scream Bloody Gore, has been widely regarded as the first death metal record, while the band's driving force, Chuck Schuldiner, is acknowledged as the originator of extreme metal. DEATH had a revolving lineup, with Schuldiner being the sole consistent member. The group's style also progressed, from the raw sound on its early albums to a more sophisticated one in its later stage. The band ceased to exist after Schuldiner died of brain cancer in December 2001, but remains an enduring metal brand.

Today's tune "Zombie Ritual", taken from "Scream Bloody Gore", enjoy!

Paradise Lost - Beneath Broken Earth

Now returning with opus number fourteen “The Plague Within”, PARADISE LOST are once again refining the chemical equation to their sonic alchemy with the kind of creative invincibility few can deliver, this can clearly be heard on the first single and video "Beneath Broken Earth".  Really looking forward to spin “The Plague Within” on the turntable soon, with the first taste it sounds really good (:, the album is produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano (GHOST BC, ULVER, CATHEDRAL) and visually rounded-off by art courtesy of Zbigniew M. Bielak (WATAIN; BEHEMOTH).

PARADISE LOST are a gothic metal band that formed in 1988 in Halifax, England and are considered by some to be one of the pioneers of the gothic metal genre. PARADISE LOST has proven to be an influential band, with Jonas Renkse of KATATONIA saying that his band started off "as PARADISE LOST fanboys".

Their line-up has remained stable for such a long-standing heavy metal band, consisting of singer Nick Holmes, guitarists Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy, and bassist Steve Edmondson. Holmes and Mackintosh are the principal composers, with almost all of the band's songs credited to them. During the years, the band has only changed drummers.

Speaking to Rock Sins, Nick Holmes stated that the new album would have elements of all previous Paradise Lost material including a return to the death/doom of their early output, stating that "there’s some songs that could’ve been written in 1989, a couple of really old school doom/death songs which are gonna surprise a couple of people when they hear it".

The Artwork is done by the Polish illustrator Zbigniew M. Bielak

Born in 1980 in Cracow, Zbigniew M. Bielak is a Polish artist and architect, best known in the musical realm for his record cover illustrations, which among others include meticulously handcrafted artworks of WATAIN, GHOST, VADER or ABSU albums.

Paralelly to that his artistic output is mostly focused on encyclopaedic, archaeologic and architectural illustration, and has crossed multiple mediums within art including drawing, oil and acrylic painting or serigraphy, with the pursuit of historical coherence and attention to detail being clearly focal points of his varied stylistic leanings.

Cannibal Corpse - Kill or Become

The Buffalo death metal band Cannibal Corpse has recently released a new blast beat "A Skeletal Domain". The album is filled with truly evil guitar melodies and dark sound. The album is the thirteen studio albums since the début album 1990 "Eaten Back to Life".

Cannibal Corpse was formed in 1988, the band has released thirteen studio albums, two box sets, four video albums and one live album. The band has had little radio or television exposure throughout its career, although a cult following began to build behind the release of their 1991 album Butchered at Birth, and 1992 album Tomb of the Mutilated. Both albums achieved worldwide sales of one million copies by 2003, including 558,929 in the United States, making them the all-time top-selling death metal band in the country.

The members of Cannibal Corpse were originally inspired by thrash metal bands like Slayer and Kreator, as well as other death metal bands such as Morbid Angel, Autopsy and Death. The band's album art (most often by Vincent Locke) and lyrics, drawing heavily on horror fiction and horror films, are highly controversial. At different times, several countries have banned Cannibal Corpse from performing within their borders, or have banned the sale and display of original Cannibal Corpse album covers.

Cannibal Corpse Consists of:

George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher – vocals
Pat O'Brien – guitars
Rob Barrett – guitars
Alex Webster – bass
Paul Mazurkiewicz – drums

The album A Skeletal Domain, were we find todays tune was produced Audiohammer Studios by Mark Lewis.

Bassist Alex Webster said "I think it's turning out to be kind of a dark-sounding album. Which, you know, it's a death metal album, so, of course, it should be kind of dark and eerie sounding anyway, but I think this one a little more than normal. That was kind of the direction the songwriting went in."

Todays tune "Kill or Become" is taken from A Skeletal Domain, the Video was released on 24th of September, 2014. Enjoy!

Cannibal Corpse European tour for the fall.

This will be their first European tour in support of their new album. The label mates Revocation have been confirmed as direct support while Swedish death metal heroes Aeon have been picked as the opening band.

Swallow the Sun - Cathedral Walls

Swallow the Sun is a Finnish death/doom metal band. The band is as we speak touring with Paradise Lost as support act. The band did quite well, given that the stage area were not particularly big, so it was a bit compressed, which radiated a feeling of a tight situation, the band did not really blossom out, which was a shame. Would be really nice to experience a full concert with these gentlemen, so they get a little space and the ability to also take on the tougher tracks, so maybe next time.

Swallow the Sun was formed in early 2000 by Juha Raivio, joined soon by Pasi Pasanen came along (both had played in Plutonium Orange). They rehearsed a couple of songs, one of them being "Through Her Silvery Body" which would end up on their first demo, Out of This Gloomy Light. In 2001 Markus Jämsen, whom Raivio and Pasanen already knew from their earlier bands, joined as a second guitarist, and Mikko Kotamäki from Funeris Nocturnum as singer; then Aleksi Munter (keyboards) and Matti Honkonen (bass), also of Funeris Nocturnum, joined the band. In the spring of 2002 they started arranging songs for the demo, which was recorded in January 2003 at Sam's Workshop with Sami Kokko, who also mixed the demo.

A record deal with Firebox Records was signed a few months after the recordings of the demo, and Swallow the Sun entered studio at late July 2003. During the following three weeks they recorded their debut album, The Morning Never Came. In February 2005, Swallow the Sun released their second album, Ghosts of Loss.

During the year 2006 they signed to Spinefarm Records and did a small European tour. In January 2007 they released their third album, Hope, which includes a cover version of the Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus song "Alavilla mailla" (which they translated into "These Low Lands") as a bonus track on the digipack edition, sung by Tomi Joutsen, the frontman of fellow Finnish metal band, Amorphis. There is also a guest appearance by Jonas Renkse of Katatonia on the song "The Justice of Suffering." They went on a US tour with Katatonia, Scar Symmetry and Insomnium in late 2007.

The fourth studio album New Moon was released on November 4, 2009. Wintersun drummer Kai Hahto replaced Pasi Pasanen and contributed drums on the album. Some versions of the album contain an alternate recording of "Servant of Sorrow", which features a solo by Marillion's guitarist Steve Rothery. On February 1, 2012, Svart Records released the album on LP, limited to 500 copies, yes i got one of these :)

The latest and the fifth studio album Emerald Forest and the Blackbird was released February 1, 2012, by Spinefarm Records. It was also released on limited LP on both green and white vinyl by Svart Records, yes i got one of these :)

Here are some pictures from the gig!

Todays tune "Cathedral Walls" is taken from the latest album "Emerald Forest and the Blackbird". The song features guest vocals by Nightwish vocalist Anette Olzon.
