The Watchers - Black Abyss

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

The San Francisco four-piece heavy rock band THE WATCHERS, with members of SPIRALARMS, ORCHID, and BLACK GATES, reaches high with their debut full-length "Black Abyss", We made acquaintance with them already when they released their first EP "Sabbath Highway" (read it here).

"Black Abyss" is a great release, where we get impressing songwriting and tunes with grunge, the eighties inspired heavy rock, melodic riff-based rock with an attitude that is perfectly balanced in the main structure of the tunes. It's well performed without getting too complex, more straightforward approach in a very interesting way to keep it fun to listen to. The production is high, very crisp and ear friendly, would love to get a copy on vinyl to be more precise in my judgment.

"Black Abyss" is an eight-tune long-player that opens up with the title track, a bombastic doom rocker that pays tribute to the mighty BLACK SABBATH. "Alien Lust", melodic riff-laden guitar tune with excellent vocals by Tim Narducci and guitar solos by Jeremy Von Epp and cool bass licks by Cornbread and drumming of Carter Kennedy sticks. "Oklahoma Black Magic" is following the two opening tunes, the vocals is a bit more SABBATH-like but the music is more modern hard rock metal, thrashy riffing, great tune. "Buzzard" follows a more melodic path, modern riffing where vocals have a Layne Staley touch. "Starfire", classic hard rock with a grunge vibe, see it below. "People Of The Gun" where guitarist Jeremy Von Epp plays with all his body and soul. Supurb tune! "Suffer Fool" opens up with acoustic guitar until it turns electric, classical swirl with a light SOUNDGARDEN feeling. "Seven Tenets" closes the record with slow and heavy guitar riffs and a great solo. "Black Abyss" is masterful mixing of Metal Legend Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, MEGADETH and more) behind the knobs, "Black Abyss" is a return to the classic metal riffing of yore, soaked in fuzz and dragged head first into the 21st Century. "Black Abyss" was released at March 09th 2018.

Sum: Excellent rock, the 70s meet the 21st, if you dig SPRIALARMS and ORCHID, You will adore THE WATCHERS.

Today's tune "Starfire" is taken from "Black Abyss", enjoy!

Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different

Sunday, time for a classic,

Betty Davis was born July 26, 1945 and is an American funk and soul singer. She is known as one of the most influential voices of the funk era and a performer who was known for her memorable live shows.

She met Miles Davis in 1967 and married him in September 1968. The marriage was short-lived due to his temperament. In just one year of marriage, she influenced him greatly by introducing him to the fashions and the new popular music trends of the era. In his autobiography, Miles credited Betty with helping to plant the seeds of his future musical explorations by introducing the trumpeter to psychedelic rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix and funk innovator Sly Stone. The Miles Davis album Filles de Kilimanjaro (1968) includes a song named after her and her photo on the front cover.

"They Say I Am Different" profiles the groundbreaking funk musician described by Miles Davis as “Madonna before Madonna, Prince before Prince”

Today's tune is the title track taken from the second studio album "They Say I'm Different" by Betty Davis, it was released in 1974. Enjoy!

The Night Flight Orchestra - This Time

After taking the world of rock music by storm with last year's surprise hit "Amber Galactic", which also got nominated for a Swedish Grammy in the process, and leaving people speechless after a breath-taking first European tour in November/December, Swedish classic/progressive rock supergroup THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA have completed the works on their impatiently awaited next album.

The band Air submitted the following message from outer space:

"THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA returns with another chapter in their steaming space opera that began with "Amber Galactic".

This time, the female space commanders want even more revenge than they already had, space is even more infinite, and the amount of champagne it takes to keep this navy afloat and adrift in the cosmos is probably illegal on most planets!

Never looking back, THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA boldly goes where no man or woman has ever gone before, and with this album, they've taken another step in their quest to elevate classic rock from being a music genre to becoming an immersive whole-body transcendental experience!

It's time to prepare yourself, because the riffs will be riffier, the vocals will be throatier, the synthesizers will envelop you, the AOR will be AOR-ier, the long songs will be longer, the short songs will be shorter, the bass will seduce you, the drums will destroy you, the groove will hypnotize and paralyze you. Can you handle it?"

"Sometimes The World Ain't Enough" was again produced by the band themselves and was recorded at Handsome Hard Music / Larsson Music Studio as well as Nordic Sound Lab in Skara, Sweden. Mixing duties were taken on by the band's guitarist/percussionist Sebastian Forslund and mastering was done by Thomas ”Plec” Johansson at The Panic Room. Set to be released on June 29 via Nuclear Blast.

Recording the video for our first single ”This Time”, was like combining different dimensions in a space cocktail. Numerous times during the video shoot, band members had to call the tax authorities, to confirm their names in the register, to make sure they had not lost all contact with reality. The result is surely mesmerizing and will take you on a journey that will be hard to digest. This is also our first video featuring the ”The Airline Annas”, our beautiful and super talented back up singers. They certainly made this video sparkle. The song itself, is the album opener and might not be representative for the whole album - no song really is, but we just like it that way. We make albums and each and every song leads it’s own little life and together they form a celebratory album with class, hooks and a bass that could walk a million miles without stopping for a drink. This trailblazer of a song used to be just ours, now it’s yours too.”

THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA is:

Björn Strid - Vocals Sharlee D'Angelo - Bass
David Andersson - Guitars
Richard Larsson - Keyboards
Jonas Källsbäck - Drums
Sebastian Forslund - Guitars, Percussion, Special FX
Anna-Mia Bonde - Backing Vocals
Anna Brygård - Backing Vocals

Today's tune "This Time" is the first single from the new album "Sometimes The World Ain't Enough", enjoy!

The four-piece heavy psych band ELDER, hailing from Boston, USA. Did a quick stop here in Stockholm for a show at Slaktkyrkan. Fuzz and heavy psych was delivered in a superb way. King Buffalo - Kerosene

Yesterday I was at Slaktkyrkan here in Stockholm to watch a live show with KING BUFFALO and ELDER. Two bands that I think I never have seen or I have but forgotten it, hehe.

KING BUFFALO is a psychedelic trio in the classic format of bass, drums, and guitar, whose expansive and thunderous music is anything but easily definable.

Formed by three long-standing members of the blooming Rochester, NY rock scene, KING BUFFALO gathered in September of 2013 to start working on a new musical collaboration in a heavy rock vein. Their efforts spawned a demo release and several splits and one-offs which, coupled with their impressive live show, quickly gained them an international audience.

KING BUFFALO is:

Sean McVay - Guitar & Lead Vocals
Scott Donaldson - Drums & Vocals
Dan Reynolds - Bass & Lights

The show with the guys was awesome, plenty of time for a support band to play all the great tune they have. Was pretty lucky, as a big supporter of small bands I always if any, buy some Vinyl. This time they had "Orion" on the road, so I bought a copy and got it signed, whohaa! Great record. So today we pick a tune from it of course.

KING BUFFALO performing "Kerosene" at Wicked Squid Studios in Rochester NY - 3/17/2016, Enjoy!

Black Country Communion - Love Remains

BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION's have released a studio video for "Love Remains", a great tune a little outside the normal songs that they usually have. The tune is taken from the band's fourth album, "BCCIV", which was released last September via Mascot Records.

BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION is the Anglo-American rock group comprising vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, TRAPEZE), drummer Jason Bonham (LED ZEPPELIN, FOREIGNER), Derek Sherinian (DREAM THEATER, ALICE COOPER, BILLY IDOL) and blues-rock guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa.

Glenn Hughes tells that "Love Remains" is a very personal song for him.

"I wrote this song for my Dad on the flight back to the UK for his Memorial Service. When I went to record it, my Mom had also just passed away. So I sang it for the both of them. I was installed with a greater sense of gratitude. I used a mid-falsetto vocal on the chorus to add sensitivity to the melody that I had written. The content is quite simple. When the last breath is taken only love remains."

Enjoy today's tune!

1000mods - Claws

Last week I got the opportunity to see the psychedelic/heavy rock band 1000MODS from Chiliomodi, Greece, live in Sweden for the first time, a half full Kraken with most greeks in the audience, made this as a familiar reunion crowd, at least for the band. I got a very good spot in the middle, pretty close to the stage. The sound was pretty loud, but with a decent mix to keep the music well balance in the hall. Great tunes were played during the evening so I was pleased. The band looked to be in a great tour shape, I guess Hotels and not overnight in a van. The live show was interesting, great flow in the playing, good feeling in the riffs and a superb cover up when one of the guitarists got problems with his signal, continued with the tune and then jammed in the background until he was back in business again and it got time to start the next tune.

The Setlist was great, I like the choice of the tunes and the show had a perfect length.

Claws
Electric Carve
Road to Burn
Loose
Low
Above179
Vultures
On a Stone
El Rollito
Vidage
Super Van Vacation

So here are a few pictures from the show.

Today's tune "Claws", first tune on the setlist and it's taken from second album "Vultures", released 2014, The clip if filmed live at Schoolwave Festival 2014, enjoy!

Harakiri For The Sky - Arson

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Arson" is the fourth full-length record by the Austrian metal band HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY. The band was formed in Salzburg and Vienna in 2011 by vocalist JJ (Michael V. Wahntraum) and multi-instrumentalist Matthias Sollak, formerly of black metal band BIFRÖST. They have released four studio albums – "Harakiri for the Sky" (2012), "Aokigahara" (2014), "III: Trauma" (2016) and "Arson" (2018) through Art of Propaganda.

"Arson" follows the line of heartbreaking emotion, melancholy sadness, and depressing pain. But this is somehow not a "cut your arms" kinda music, even if the lyrics are very depressing, big losses in life, suicide, and death, the music is something else, yes it's dark, melodic and black, but they manage to keep me engaged with an amazing flow in their music, which is a mix of blackened post metal brilliance. The album is 71 mins long, spread over 8 tunes, almost overkill, but it is a well-crafted piece that needs some attention.

The album opens up with "Fire, Walk With Me", a melodic masterpiece, continues with the dreamy and creepy "The Graves We’ve Dug". "You Are The Scars" is a scary and triumphant piece. The melancholia and powerful beauty in "Heroin Waltz" where the classical guitar is played by Bernth Brodträger. "Tomb Omnia" with its blackened guitars, growling vocals and hard-hitting drumming makes you feel good. "Stillborn" is a slower piece with a great atmosphere, post-metal fusion. "Voidgazer" have a little blackened folkish touch. The album closes up in a magnificent way with a cover of GRAVEYARD LOVERS "Manifesto", with guest vocals by Silvi Bogojevic that really gives a new life to the tune.

"Arson" was released February 16, 2018, and the amazing cover artwork is made by Striga.

Sum: "Arson" is a powerful piece of music that should not be missed!

Tom Waits - Earth Died Screaming

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Earth Died Screaming" is a tune by Tom Waits, who is renowned for his frequently bizarre, otherworldly instrumentation. Engineer Tchaid Blake recalled the recording of this song to Uncut: "He wanted the sound of wood he'd heard on old Smithsonian records. He knew exactly the sound he wanted. We ended up outside with about seven or eight people surrounding Tom on their knees banging two-by-fours against stones or wood on the ground. Wonderful! They're credited as playing 'Sticks' on the record."

The song is featured in the 1995 movie 12 Monkeys.

"Earth Died Screaming" is taken from the tenth studio album "Bone Machine" by Tom Waits, released in 1992 on Island Records. It won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, and features guest appearances by LOS LOBOS' David Hidalgo, PRIMUS' Les Claypool and Brain, and THE ROLLING STONES' Keith Richards.

"Bone Machine" marked a return to studio material for Waits, coming a full five years after his previous studio album, Franks Wild Years (1987). The album is often noted for its dark lyrical themes of death and murder, and for its rough, stripped-down, percussion-heavy blues rock style.

Fatal Smile - For The Last In Line

Saturday, busy day, Record Store Day, if I'm at home always try to prioritize and this Saturday I got a few hours to spend in town to fetch up some new stuff and say hello to the store owners, left with 2 bags of records (more of that later this week, I hope) to meet up with my youngest daughter that had a soccer event with her team. Finally at home, writing this before it's time for dinner and a change over of my self to the evening looking good outfit. Because it's time for some party, a good friend of mine is turning one year older, one of the milestone birthdays, today it's an even number and he throws out a big birthday party, where both I and Thetania will attend to. I believe it will be an awesome evening, many friends to say hello to and some new to meet.

My friends are known as Blade (Thomas Emblad) in the rock act FATAL SMILE, a band that had a strong and solid reputation internationally and achieved great success with their 2nd album "Neo Natural Freaks". Thomas is a joyful man, very social and caring, a mate who is close when needed. A very sympathetic colleague while on the roads, simply a nice guy to work with, we had a lot of fun for a couple of years, still have when the time comes. So today we celebrate Thomas with a great tune he wrote to celebrate "Ronnie James Dio" Happy Birthday man, see you tonight!

“You guys are the best opening band I´ve ever had!” words from Ronnie James Dio about FATAL SMILE.

James Leg - A Forest

Thursday, time to check out a tune for this weeks cover song!

"A Forest" is a song by the English alternative rock band THE CURE. Co-produced by Mike Hedges and THE CUREs Robert Smith, it was released as a single from the band's second album "Seventeen Seconds" on 8 April 1980.

"A Forest" tells a vague story of the pursuit of a girl in a forest, which ends in a loss. Many fans and critics regard this song in particular as a good example of THE CUREs unique sound.

This song is behind a famous incident. At the 1981 Werchter Festival in Belgium, The Cure were on before Robert Palmer and were just finishing their set. Robert Palmer, apparently getting a little pushy, tried to have his road crew hurry The Cure off the stage. Robert Smith responded by sassily informing the crowd that they couldn't play anymore, then played an extra-long 9-minute version of "A Forest." Bass player Simon Gallup put a stamp on the performance by shouting "F--k Robert Palmer" to a cheering crowd!

Today's cover of the tune "A Forest" made by JAMES LEG, a pretty remarkable version with distorted Hammond, the Clip is filmed live at Le Bootleg Bordeaux 03/11/2015, enjoy!

THE CURE play "A Forest" at the "Rock Werchter Festival" on july 2, 1981. This is the infamous "f***k Robert Palmer, f**k Rock and Roll" episode where the Cure were told they had to cut their set short, obviously not to the amusement of Robert Smith, Simon Gallup and Lol Tolhurst.

The long-awaited third album from Bay Area dark, heavy rockers, BLACKWÜLF, featuring the fantastic guest lead guitar work of doom legend, Geof O'Keefe (PENTAGRAM/BEDEMON), who adds his chops to three tracks!

"Abandon All Hope" is the band's fifth upcoming studio album, which will be released on May 11.

Recorded and mixed at Crehate Studios in Gothenburg by Oscar Nilsson, Marcus Sunesson, Mikael Sehlin and Steve Drennan, together with musical director Niclas Engelin (also of IN FLAMES), "Abandon All Hope" was mastered at Panic Room by Thomas "Plec" Johansson. The collaboration was fruitful, resulting in what is probably ENGEL's strongest album to date.

Earthless - Black Heaven

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Black Heaven" is the fifth studio album by the San Diego-based trio power trio, EARTHLESS. A band known for the instrumental jams thru out the years and now suddenly guitarist Isaiah Mitchell found out that he can do two things, play the guitar and sing, woohaa, and with drummer Mario Rubalcaba and bassist Mike Egington who adds a solid rhythms to the tunes. So with "Black Heaven" we get an EARTHLESS with a twist, nothing bad about it at all, on the contrary, it gives the music much more substance, a meaning, and facelift of an already classic band.

"Black Heaven" is a six tune album with full of mind-bending riffing, classic rock-influenced kraut with a light psychedelic atmosphere. The album opens up in a typical EARTHLESS style, improvised rock with the great album starter "Gifted by the Wind", melodic and catchy boogie, same formula is used on the next following songs "End to End" and "Electric Flame", as well as closer "Sudden End", the first single and video is the sub-two-minute punky "Volt Rush", a fast, full-power and all-go-down-hill tune. The title tune, "Black Heaven", starts with the ZEPPELIN alike intro, blending guitar riffs and soloing by Isaiah Mitchell. "Black Heaven" is a solid and well composed album with a great deal of spontaneity.

Nice looking Vinyl!

Sum: A boldness effort by EARTHLESS with "Black Heaven" ends up stronger than ever, don't miss this one!

Today's tune "Volt Rush" suites perfect as a week starter, enjoy!

The Allman Brothers Band - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed

Sunday, time for a classic.

"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is a song by the American group THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. It first appeared on their second studio album, "Idlewild South" (1970), released on Capricorn Records. The song—a jazz-influenced instrumental was written by guitarist Dickey Betts, among his first songwriting credits for the group. Betts named the song after a headstone he saw in Rose Hill Cemetery in the band's hometown of Macon, Georgia. Multiple versions of the song have been recorded, with the version performed on the group's 1971 live album At Fillmore East generally considered the definitive rendition.

"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" was inspired by a woman Betts was involved within the group's hometown of Macon, Georgia. She was the girlfriend of musician Boz Scaggs, with Betts later saying she "was Hispanic and somewhat dark and mysterious—and she really used it to her advantage and played it to the hilt." To cloak her identity, the song is named after a headstone Betts saw at the Rose Hill Cemetery, where band members often ventured in their early days to relax and write songs. A considerable legend developed about the song's genesis and what Betts was doing at the time, much of it fueled by a put-on interview band leader Duane Allman gave Rolling Stone. "Duane told some crazy shit about that graveyard. I don't wanna tell all, but that's the part that matters," Betts later said. For his part, vocalist Gregg Allman was candid about his experiences in the cemetery: "I'd be lying if I said I didn't have my way with a lady or two down there." The cemetery later became the final resting spot of Duane and Gregg Allman, along with bassist Berry Oakley.

This was the first original instrumental song by The Allman Brothers.

Betts wrote this is based on Miles Davis' "All Blues." While Davis had been incorporating elements of rock into his jazz, Betts used pieces of jazz for this rock instrumental. Jazz rhythms make excellent use of the two-drummer format the Allmans use. This is one of their live favorites. It usually evolves into a lengthy jam. At concerts, this was a showcase for Allman's drummers Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, who performed a drum solo at the end.

The live version on At Fillmore East takes up almost a whole side. Because of the extended jams, it became a double album, but the band insisted it is priced close to a single album.

Enjoy!
