Dio - Shame On The Night

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Shame On The Night" is taken from the debut studio album "Holy Diver" by American heavy metal band DIO, released in 1983. Vocalist Ronnie James Dio had just finished his first tenure in BLACK SABBATH, whose drummer, Vinny Appice, he took with him to put together his own band. The roster was completed by his former bandmate from RAINBOW, Jimmy Bain, on bass and by the young guitarist Vivian Campbell, coming from the NWOBHM band SWEET SAVAGE. The album was acclaimed by the music press and is the band's most successful effort.

"Shame On The Night" is also released on the latest live album by DIO named "When Darkness Falls"

It's already 10 yrs since Ronnie James Dio left us, miss you man. So today's tune is in memory of him. Today's clip is filmed live in holland 1983. Enjoy!

Khemmis - Rainbow In The Dark

Denver, Colorado-based doomed heavy metal quartet KHEMMIS will release their new EP "Doomed Heavy Metal" on April 17 via Nuclear Blast and 20 Buck Spin.

Since joining with 20 Buck Spin in 2015 for the release of their debut album "Absolution", KHEMMIS have been prolifically busy. Three full length albums, "Absolution", "Hunted" and "Desolation", a split EP with SPIRIT ADRIFT, a Decibel Magazine flexi and multiple tours and festival appearances throughout North America and Europe. As KHEMMIS continues work on their fourth album and first for Nuclear Blast Records, the band offers up "Doomed Heavy Metal" to close out the first chapter in their ascendent march to the top.

For KHEMMISs ever-expanding fanbase "Doomed Heavy Metal" offers a treasure trove of rare material to temporarily sate the hunger for that highly anticipated new album. Never a band to shy away from a challenge, their cover of the legendary "Rainbow In The Dark" by Ronnie James Dio is triumphant and energized tribute to the ultimate God of Heavy Metal that in the hands of a lesser band might be anything but. Recorded exclusively for this release the song takes on new life in the signature KHEMMIS style, making it their own without betraying the ideal of the original.

Additionally “Doomed Heavy Metal” contains the band’s rare and storied interpretation of “A Conversation With Death” and the much-requested Decibel flexi track "Empty Throne". The B-side offers three huge live tracks, one from each of the three 20 Buck Spin released full-length albums. Recorded at a headlining show in their native city of Denver by their longtime producer Dave Otero, these fan favorites show KHEMMIS meet and exceed all expectations at every show they play.

The band comments: As lifelong fans of ZZ TOP, Fandango has been a consistent source of inspiration for the four of us. The combination of high-octane live cuts and rare studio recordings make the release stand out in the band’s discography. In that tradition, we are thrilled to announce "Doomed Heavy Metal". This mini-album is similarly unique, combining sought-after singles and live cuts together on one record. We’ve topped it all off with a newly recorded version of DIO’s immortal “Rainbow in the Dark.” For those who have clamored for the rerelease of the long out of print “Empty Throne” and “A Conversation with Death,” your calls have been answered. We hope new and old fans alike will pick up the album, pour a tall glass of their favorite beverage, and party with us!

Enjoy this KHEMMIS cover of the legendary "Rainbow In The Dark" by Ronnie James Dio.

Fatal Smile - For The Last In Line

Saturday, busy day, Record Store Day, if I'm at home always try to prioritize and this Saturday I got a few hours to spend in town to fetch up some new stuff and say hello to the store owners, left with 2 bags of records (more of that later this week, I hope) to meet up with my youngest daughter that had a soccer event with her team. Finally at home, writing this before it's time for dinner and a change over of my self to the evening looking good outfit. Because it's time for some party, a good friend of mine is turning one year older, one of the milestone birthdays, today it's an even number and he throws out a big birthday party, where both I and Thetania will attend to. I believe it will be an awesome evening, many friends to say hello to and some new to meet.

My friends are known as Blade (Thomas Emblad) in the rock act FATAL SMILE, a band that had a strong and solid reputation internationally and achieved great success with their 2nd album "Neo Natural Freaks". Thomas is a joyful man, very social and caring, a mate who is close when needed. A very sympathetic colleague while on the roads, simply a nice guy to work with, we had a lot of fun for a couple of years, still have when the time comes. So today we celebrate Thomas with a great tune he wrote to celebrate "Ronnie James Dio" Happy Birthday man, see you tonight!

“You guys are the best opening band I´ve ever had!” words from Ronnie James Dio about FATAL SMILE.

Today's tune "For The Last In Line", enjoy!

Appice - Monsters & Heroes

"Sinister", the first joint studio album by Carmine and Vinny Appice, "APPICE" was released on October 27 through SPV/Steamhammer as double gatefold vinyl, CD digipack, download and stream.

The official video for the albums first single, "Monsters And Heroes", can be seen below.

You're unlikely to find a phenomenon like Carmine and Vinny Appice a second time in the history of rock music. For more than forty years, the two brothers have been among the most sought-after and renowned rock drummers worldwide. Carmine and Vinny (each of them on his own) can be heard on numerous legendary albums and have toured countless times with some of the world's greatest acts. Carmine embarked on his musical path in the 1960s with the unforgotten VANILLA FUDGE, manning in the course of his illustrious career the drums for superstars such as Rod Stewart and Ozzy Osbourne, among others. His brother Vinny, who is eleven years his junior, looks back on an equally spectacular career, having worked with acts such as BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL and DIO, among others. With the exception of the live album "Drum Wars - Live!" (2014), there has been no direct collaboration between the two so far. That's about to change!

"Sinister" was recorded with the support of a number of prestigious guests. Vinny says:
"As Ringo said: with a little help from our friends."

Rainbow - Temple Of The King

Sunday, time for a classic. Today we will pick a tune from "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow", the first album by British rock guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's solo band Rainbow, released in 1975. The tune I have in mind is called "Temple Of The King", the song is a really beautiful piece that touches your heart and soul deeply and most likely give you some hard goose bumps. A perfect tune to play to your love one, so I dedicate this one to Thetania.

The album was created during a studio sessions in Tampa Bay, Florida on 12 December 1974, Blackmore originally planned to record the solo single "Black Sheep of the Family"- a cover of a track by the band Quatermass from 1970. The newly composed "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" was to be the B-side. Other musicians involved included singer/lyricist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Gary Driscoll of blues rock band Elf, and cellist Hugh McDowell of ELO. Satisfied with the two tracks, Blackmore decided to extend the sessions to a full album.

For the album the other members of Elf, keyboardist Micky Lee Soule and bassist Craig Gruber were utilised. The album was recorded in Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany during February–March 1975. Though it was originally thought to be a solo album, the record was billed as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, and later progressed to a new band project. Blackmore and Dio did promotional work for the album. Shortly after the album was released, all Elf members, excluding Dio, were sacked, and Blackmore recruited new musicians for subsequent Rainbow albums. This first line-up never performed live, and the live photos used in the album art are of Blackmore while with Deep Purple and of Elf playing live.

The last track of the album "Still I'm Sad" is an instrumental cover of a song by The Yardbirds from their 1965 album Having a Rave Up with The Yardbirds. "Catch the Rainbow" uses a similar chord progression and vocal melody to Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" from the 1967 album Axis: Bold as Love.

The original vinyl release had a gate fold sleeve, although later budget reissues on Polydor reduced to a single sleeve. The album's songs have been performed by subsequent Rainbow line-ups.

The album was widely praised for its fantasy/heroic-like lyrical content and the innovative rock style.

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow was re-issued on CD in remastered form in the US in April 1999. The European release followed later in the year.

Vocalist Ronnie James Dio considered this release his favourite Rainbow album.

Despite the title implying the record being a Ritchie Blackmore solo release, in later years Blackmore has jokingly stated that Dio's contributions warranted a re-titling of "Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio's Rainbow".

Rainbow - Stargazer

Time flies, it's only to realize that we were soon sitting in the pimped electric wheelchair and talk music with other seniors. Today, four years ago, a real musical hero left the earth life, we will of course pay attention to this and play a song in his name.

Ronnie James Dio (born Ronald James Padavona, July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010) was an American rock and heavy metal vocalist and songwriter. He fronted numerous groups including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band, Dio. He is credited with popularizing the "metal horns" hand gesture in metal culture. Dio sold over 47 million albums throughout his career. Todays tune "Stargazer" is the fifth track from Rainbow's 1976 album Rising. An epic song narrating the story of a wizard whose attempt to fly led to the enslavement of vast numbers of people, it is notable for its musical qualities as well, with the guitar and drum solos cited as important examples of the qualities of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and drummer Cozy Powell.

The long, epic track with symphonic influences starts with a short drum solo by Cozy Powell, a "great drumming moment" frequently cited as an example of his skills. It features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, a mellotron, and what Ritchie Blackmore called "a string thing all playing this half-Turkish Scale". Blackmore's solo, after the second verse, is in B Phrygian dominant scale, and is cited as "one of his best".

The song has been called a "morality tale", and its lyrics are written from the standpoint of a "slave in Egyptian times", according to lyricist Ronnie James Dio. They relate the story of the Wizard, an astronomer become "obsessed with the idea of flying", who enslaves a vast army of people to build him a tower from which he can take off and fly. The people hope for the day when their misery comes to an end, building the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains; / to see him fly, so many died"). In the end, the wizard climbs to the top of the tower but, instead of flying, falls down and dies: "no sound as he falls instead of rising. / Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand". The next song, "A Light in the Black", continues the story of the people who have lost all purpose after the Wizard's death "until they see the Light in the Dark", according to Dio.

Rainbow - A Light In The Black

New week, which means a new album that may be titled "Record Of The Week". Yesterday when I was looking for the sunday classic and played some Thin Lizzy and after all search for the right classic, so for some reason will always Rainbow's "Rising" comes up, it shows up like a jack in the box. Wondering if it's the cover that makes you always pull it out, or it may be a magnetic field that surrounds the record, what do I know, there it came anyway, and there it lay completely untouched until Thin Lizzy was fully completed and it was time to put on a new album, which got to be "Rising", heck and holy moses what a record this is, the memories you get, hell of swing the band creates, do not know how many times I clicked the volume button during the play, but it was quite high at the end, all i can say it was a wonderful time all the 33 minutes or so.

Rising (also known as Rainbow Rising is the second hard rock/heavy metal album by Rainbow, released in 1976. This is the only album of the band that has reached Platinum status in the USA.

With Ritchie Blackmore retaining only Ronnie James Dio from the previous album, he recruited drummer Cozy Powell, bassist Jimmy Bain and keyboard player Tony Carey to complete the new line-up. Recorded in Munich in less than a month, the album was overseen by rock producer and engineer Martin Birch. The record was originally billed as Blackmore's Rainbow in the US.

Few of the album tracks made it into the band's live set: "Stargazer" and "Do You Close Your Eyes", written prior to the inaugural US tour in late 1975, featured in all the 1975 and 1976 shows, while "A Light in the Black" was dropped early in the 1976 tour, although it was reintroduced into the set during the Japanese dates. "Starstruck" was played in shortened form usually as part of "Man on the Silver Mountain".

According to the All Music Guide, Rising captured Blackmore and Dio at the peak of their creative powers...(it) chronicled both the guitarist's neo-classical metal compositions at their most ambitious, and the singer's growing fixation with fantasy lyrical themes — a blueprint he would adopt for his entire career thereafter.

The album showpiece, the 8 minute and 26 second piece "Stargazer", which features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, originally had a keyboard intro found on the 2011 Deluxe Edition's "Rough Mix" version.

The first CD issue had a slightly different mix to that of the original LP, including, for example, a longer delay before the band entered after Carey's opening solo in "Tarot Woman", a longer play-out on "Run with the Wolf" and the track "Stargazer" had the vocals mixed without the delay, the extra synthesizer deleted and some of the phased sounds deleted. When remastered in 1999 the original vinyl mix was restored.

After several reschedulings, the album was finally released in Japan on April 5, 2011 as a 2 SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) Deluxe Remastered Edition. This limited edition reissue will only be released in a cardboard gatefold sleeve (mini LP-style paper jacket) featuring the "high-fidelity" SHM-CD manufacturing process (compatible with standard CD players) and is part of a two-album Rainbow cardboard sleeve reissue series featuring Rainbow Rising and Down to Earth. Both feature the unique-to-Japan obi strip and an additional insert.

Todays tune "A Light In The Black" is as you guessed taken from the album "Rising"

Here is a full show from 20/10 1977 in Munich, when Rainbow is performing. The electric rainbow that spanned the stage used so much power, it frequently interfered with the guitars and amplifiers.

In issue 1 of Kerrang! magazine, Rising was voted as the number 1 album of all time.

German thrash metal band Paradox (German band) covered the song "A Light in the Black" on the "Tales of the Weird" album (as bonus track).
