The Limit - Black Sea

THE LIMIT is a new band, or more like a super-group, where the aim is to deliver the real-deal, soulful Rock and Roll. Consisting of members of legendary Punk instigators THE STOOGES, the founders of Doom Rock PENTAGRAM, legendary NYC Punk originators TESTORS and infamous Portuguese metal band DAWNRIDER, THE LIMIT break out from the foundations of heavy rock and defy all expectations, to show a new generation what doom and punk really means.

On the new upcoming album "Caveman Logic", Bobby Liebling, singer and main-man of PENTAGRAM, one of the originators of early Doom Rock and an inspiration for generations of heavy rock fans, on vocals, gives the performance of his career, singing like his life depended on it. Sonny Vincent, enigmatic legend of the early NYC Punk scene with his band TESTORS, having been on the road with members of THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, lays down the guitar driven songs, his writing bearing all the hallmarks of ground-breaking Rock history in it’s filthy DNA. Phenomenal bass playing from Jimmy Recca, ex- THE STOOGES, and Ron Asheton’s NEW ORDER, gives THE LIMIT the intense and world-class, speaker-destroying bottom end. Joined by Hugo Conim on Rhythm Guitar and Joao Pedro on Drums from Portugese band DAWNRIDER.

Pentagram - Forever My Queen

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Forever My Queen" is a tune written by PENTAGRAM lead singer Bobby Liebling. The tune is one of the more popular tracks from the band, which was the subject of the 2011 documentary Last Days Here. Popularity is relative, however, and in PENTAGRAMs case only a handful of fans heard the band when they were active in the '70s and performing this song. Most of PENTAGRAMs fans came from renewed interest decades later and the release of some compilation albums that gave many of their songs, including this one, a proper release. In many cases, the songs were newly recorded with different musicians, although Liebling remained a constant.

In an interview with Bobby Liebling, he talked about the inspiration for the song: "I was broken up over a Dear John letter I got from a high school sweetheart, from Morocco, whose parents sent her there to get away from a bad boy - who was me. Who ain't s--t for bad boys, but, you know, I did wear a leather jacket. So that's where that song comes from."

Jack White's band THE DEAD WEATHER released a cover version of this song as a single in 2009. White overnighted five copies of it to Bobby Liebling after they recorded it. Bobby told us that it was the best cover he's heard of the song, even though he doesn't like girls in Rock bands (Alison Mosshart sings in DEAD WEATHER). "I'm prejudiced, but she did a bang up job," he said. (A tune that will be played in the future as a Thursday Cover).

"Forever My Queen" can be found on the Vintage Collection "First Daze Here" from 2001. This is the first of two compilations of 1970s material by Virginia doom metal band PENTAGRAM released on Relapse Records. It was followed by "First Daze Here Too" (2006). It marked the first time that these early PENTAGRAM recordings were officially released with worldwide distribution. The vinyl version came with a bonus 7", a replica of the 1972 Macabre single containing the songs "Be Forewarned" and "Lazylady". Many of the songs were re-recorded for PENTAGRAMs 1980s and 1990s albums.

Nekromant - Blood For Walpurgis

NEKROMANT is a 3-man-piece hailing from the Swedish city of Vänersborg, the band – formerly known as SERPENT – are renowned for delivering a raw, gritty and direct assault, cast in the fires and a dedicated melting pot of metallic inspirations which include BLACK SABBATH, PENTAGRAM and Texan rockers, THE SWORD.

Following the release of their self-titled album in late 2015 on Transubstans Records, the band played extensively both home and abroad at large shows such as Sweden Rock Festival and toured with fellow Swedes, Cities of Mars. Their album NEKROMANT (released under the band’s original name) received unanimous praise by critics and fans alike and led to a very successful start in 2016 for the trio. Having caught the attention of American underground giants Ripple Music, who immediately fell in love with the way the band wore their influences proudly on their sleeves, with the dark and heavy majesty of "Snakes & Liars" (2017) NEKROMANT undoubtedly carried a torch for old-school metal.

NEKROMANTs song holds less fascination with Walpurga than the whole underbelly of Walpurgis Night itself. Something is about to rise from the dead and torment the living and we get to hear the excitement of Sankt Walpurgisnacht from the perspective of one of its celebrants, with the hint that this necromancer, however malevolent, is desperately seeking to be reunited with a long lost lover. I have to say that the guitar play is an absolute delight to behold. It’s crisp, vibrant, on-point, and harmonizes splendidly with the rhythm section, which bears the marks of seasoned musicianship. Look for "The Nekromant Lives" to emerge on vinyl and CD formats via Ripple Music, released on October 19th, 2018.

Today's tune "Blood For Walpurgis" is the first single from their new album "The Nekromant Lives". The tune is a tight, twisted number about Walpurgis Night, named for the man held up by German believers as their emissary in battle against the wiles of the Devil and all them witches, in particular, which would come out to play on Hexennacht. To this day, Christians set bonfires ablaze in Saint Walpurga’s name on the eve of April 30th, with hopes of chasing away demons of all kinds.

Dunbarrow - Lucifer's Child

Summoned to play it the old way in a new age, Trondheim, Norway quintet DUNBARROW draws inspiration from freezing winter nights, unpolished demo tapes from the 70’s and the Swedish throwback rock from the beginning of the 21st century. The result is Norwegian proto-doom with a back-to-basics sound, from PENTAGRAM and WITCHFINDER to QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE.

The band has been playing together for over 8 years through different band names and genres. In 2014, vocalist Espen Andersen joined the band upon the departure of original singer/bassist Richard Chappell. Sondre Berge went from playing drums to playing bass. Kenneth Lønning and Eirik Øvregård are still on the guitars, with Pål Gunnar Dale taking over the drums permanently in 2016. Espen Andersen recorded and mixed the debut album at Stoy Studios. And on the upcoming album "Dunbarrow II" they wanted to further perfect their sound, the group teamed up with one of the most prominent producers in Norway, Christer Cederberg (ANATHEMA, TRISTANIA) for the first few days in order to get the sound just right. Then, Espen did the rest. The result is as eponymous and definitive as its title.

"Dunbarrow II" will be available on LP, CD and download on RidingEasy Records on September 14th, 2018.

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

Busy times with a lot of work makes music listening suffer a bit, the pile of new records are growing again. So this week I pick an album that have a few years of playing time, an album that was in the pile of recommendations and now ended up as a "Record Of The Week"

"The Black is Never Far" is the third full-length album by PLACE OF SKULLS. The band is from Knoxville, Tennessee and was formed in 2000 by PENTAGRAM, ex-DEATH ROW, ex-CATHEDRAL, guitarist Victor Griffin. Griffin left PENTAGRAM in 1996 and during this time before starting the band, became a Christian. The name is a biblical reference to Golgotha. The band put out their debut album "Nailed", on Southern Lord Records in 2002. Many of these songs deal with Griffin's new found faith in Christianity. Four songs from the "Nailed" session were explicitly Christian and for this reason did not appear on the album. These were released as the "Love Through Blood" EP in 2005. Scott "Wino" Weinrich joined the band for their second album, "With Vision". This album was released by Southern Lord Records in 2003. Shortly after, Wino left the band to concentrate on THE HIDDEN HAND. In 2006 the band signed to Germany's Exile on Mainstream Records and released the album, "The Black Is Never Far". In 2010, the band released their fourth album, "As a Dog Returns".  2014 Griffin rejoined PENTAGRAM. June 17, 2016 the band released the album "In-Graved".

"The Black is Never Far" is a soulful rock album with music from a dark place, light doomish, light SABBATH riffing by guitar slinger and vocalist Victor Griffin. His vocals delivers husky, thick melodies that are filled with worldly destruction and as the album title indicates, the road to Hell is never more than a few missteps away. The album kicks of with real stoner chug "Prisoner's Creed", thick and heavy riffing. "Relentless" is another heavy rocker. "Sense of Divinity" is a heavy piece where SABBATH vein blows true the tune, great song work. "Darkest Hour" starts soft and beautifully before it erupts with SABBATH riffing, but keeps the calm , truly nice guitar work on this tune. "Interlude #1, #2, #3" are more like guitar picking intros. The half pace-acoustic tunes like the title track and the closer "Changed Heart" are very beautiful, melancholy with a sense of compassion. "Lookin' For a Reason" is a blusey one, with a guitar playing that is incredibly sensitive, moving, almost heartbreaking, brings a new meaning to the term of manly sorrow and sadness.

Sum: If you are up 2 some melancholy blues-doom, then "The Black is Never Far" is absolutely you're thing!

Witchcraft - The Outcast

When Magnus Pelander founded WITCHCRAFT back in the year 2000, he just did so to record a track in tribute to his idols Roky Erickson and PENTAGRAMs Bobby Liebling. It took until 2002 when the band finally released that first single in dedication ‘No Angel Or Demon’ followed up by their debut album “Witchcraft” in 2004. Using vintage equipment and Pelander’s distinctive haunting vocals they’ve released three more albums “Firewood” (2005) “The Alchemist” (2007) and “Legend” in 2012 earning cult status due to their signature sound that is now known as Sweden’s finest psychedelic/classic rock band.

The mastermind Magnus Pelander is back and the new upcoming album "Nucleus" is set to be release in Jan 15th, 2016.

"Nucleus"  is done with an partly new line-up (Rage Widerberg on drums and Tobias Anger on bass). The production is made by Philip Gabriel Saxin and Anton Sundell.

Describing the process and the new guys surrounding him, Pelander, the free spirit he is, finds his very own words:

“Producer Philip Gabriel Saxin is a rare breed. He's living off of seaweed and pomegranate seeds and only listens to Doom-metal. He rarely sleeps and if he does he sleeps in a couch made of hemp. Co-mixer and producer Anton Sundell is the most evil person I know about.

Drummer Rage Widerberg is a descendant of a Swedish northern bear tribe and how he makes a living is impossible to tell. His speciality is changing flat tires.

Bass beast Tobias Anger doesn't want to be called by his real name so his family has invented a unique blow horn with which they awake him from his nightly dreams of paranoia and world domination.“

The first single "The Outcast", is set to released on December 4, 2015 on 7” vinyl, including a NIRVANA cover, ‘Even In His Youth’, as the B-side.

This one should follow both the lineage of their raw debuts and the trend of their latest and more modern records.

Bedemon - Lord Of Desolation

Then it's time to introduce today's tune, earlier today, I posted the entrie for the letter "B" in the project Record Madness, a lot of records got the chance to show off and be on the picture, one of these should be played here in day.

Bedemon was an offshoot of very early Pentagram (circa 1973). Before Randy joined the band, he “borrowed” Geof and Bobby, and asked his friend Mike, to help him record some of his own compositions, just to get them down on tape. The very first Bedemon session resulted in “Child of Darkness,” “Serpent Venom,” and Geof’s Sabbath-y “Frozen Fear.” After a few months the same team got together to lay down some more tracks, and before long there was more than an album’s worth of material committed to tape. However 26 years later Bedemon are back with a new vocalist, new material and the new album “Symphony Of Shadows”.

The songs on “Symphony Of Shadows” have the classic dark doomish mood,  an album that features almost sixty minutes of doom without losing energy.

Witchcraft - It's Not Because Of You

Witchcraft is a Swedish Heavy Rock band founded in 2000. Magnus Pelander (formerly of Norrsken) formed Witchcraft in 2000 in order to record a tribute to Pentagram's Bobby Liebling and Roky Erickson. The "No Angel or Demon" single was released in 2002 by Primitive Art Records which caught the ear of Lee Dorrian's label Rise Above Records, who quickly signed them. A year later, the band were brought back together with Jonas Arnesén taking the place of original drummer Jens Henriksson, and his brother Mats taking Ola's place on the bass.

The new 4th studio album marks the recording debut of the band's new members Simon Solomon (guitar), Tom Jondelius (guitar) and Oscar Johansson (drums). Magnus Pelander has stated that he will focus on his vocals without playing guitar anymore.

The album "Legend", which marks the bands first after a long 5 year hiatus, is scheduled to be released September 21th on double vinyl; its also been announced there will be a limited edition purple vinyl available. pressed to 250 copies which will be hand numbered in gatefold, incl. DIN A2 poster. This version is unfortunately already sold out, I did not manage to get a copy this time, so I have to settle for the regular edition. Soundgarden was the main act on Thursday night. With a sneaking intro, great lighting and an ok sound, do the guys step on stage. Sounds great, but feels dark, slightly depressive vibe I get. But really fun to experience them live, I'm happy. Do not watch the entire show because I had other things to do, more on that tomorrow.

Soundgarden is an American grunge band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1984 by singer Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Matt Cameron became the band's full time drummer in 1986, while bassist Ben Shepherd became a permanent replacement for Yamamoto in 1990.
