Gold & Silver - Azurite

"Omens", ELDERs fifth full-length record is on the way, set to be released on April 24th. In the meantime we take a peak on the ELDER side-project "GOLD & SILVER" featuring Nick DiSalvo and Michael Risberg. It's an entirely instrumental project. 1 track each side. Side 1, "Azurite" a mesmerizing psychedelic rock journey clocking at almost 16 minutes and Side 2, "Malachite" captures your mind for slightly over 10 minutes.

The copper minerals from which GOLD & SILVERs two-song debut EP takes its name, "Azurite And Malachite", are blue and green, respectively. The EP was released on limited vinyl (250 copies, tri-color platter, etc.) through Totem Cat Records. GOLD & SILVER began as Risberg and DiSalvo writing for acoustic guitar, and if “Azurite” (15:42) and “Malachite” (10:08) were constructed the same way, then they maintain that jam-based sensibility, despite being at least directionally plotted and recorded in layers (unless DiSalvo has concocted a way to play guitar and a full drum kit at the same time; live, GOLD & SILVER brings in ELDERs Jack Donovan on bass and John DiSalvo on drums).

"Azurite And Malachite" are available once more on vinyl from Stickman Records - this time on 3 color, 180 gr. marbled vinyl including a download code. This album has been remastered and re-cut for a new pressing by Carl Saff and sounds better than ever! Also, they are playing their first gig in years and also their first-ever European show at Hintertreffen 2020 in Berlin this March!

They are planning more music to be recorded this winter and will hopefully begin regular musical activity once again.

Elder - Dead Roots Stirring

The four-piece heavy psych band ELDER, hailing from Boston, USA. Did a quick stop here in Stockholm for a show at Slaktkyrkan. Fuzz and heavy psych was delivered in a superb way. Great to see this band live. Their lengthy songs are told as stories, unfolding and undulating across genre boundaries and into new kosmische territory.

Gozu - Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

On April 13th, Boston's rock/metal outfit GOZU will release their new album, "Equilibrium", via Blacklight Media Records. For a first preview of Equilibrium, the video for the new single "Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat" (directed by Tony Simone at Zenbeast Audio can be viewed below.

With roots in 60s psychedelia and classic rock, the fuzzy stoner riffs of the 70s, the grit of 90s grunge and the winning dirty rock n' roll that has in recent years made a resurgence, GOZU has been churning out killer records since 2009. With 2016's "Revival" they took their sound in a somewhat new and more aggressive direction, and in doing so, dropped the most compulsive, exciting and downright badass release of their career - and with "Equilibrium" they only raised the stakes and so far it sounds really bad ass.

Junius - Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light" is the latest release by the Boston anthemic post punk/post metal band JUNIUS.

This is the third full-length album, it's also the final part of this trilogy of conceptual albums composed by "The Martyrdom Of A Catastrophist", "Reports From The Threshold Of Death" and now 6 years later "Eternal Rituals For The Accretion Of Light".

With "Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light" does JUNIUS reaches new levels. The band has never sounded heavier, direct or more progressive than on the new record. Post metal with a symphonic and progressive hand shake, magnificent soundscapes with big triumphs and dark melancholy. Dreams and spirituality is the main theme. Every tune is its own chapter from this musical book. Experimenting with the musical building blocks makes this album captivating and very addictive. The album opens with the grandios piece "March of the Samsara", a powerful progressive tune with massive and hard riffs around a soft post vocals. The celestial "Beyond the Pale Society" is JUNIUS at their heaviest, very powerful and high intensity that continue on the "Mass for Metaphysicians" and the protest tune "Clean the Beast", where both are hypnotically heavy and hard to sit still to. The more movie serie like tune "The Queen’s Constellation", were the tripping keys starts up the engine of the song. To the more chanting tune "Telepaths and Pyramids" with it's Ghosts vibe. "Masquerade in Veils" is a more electronic piece, with darker vocals, almost like Johnny Cash. "Heresy of the Free Spirit" have a eastern vibe with heavy riffing. The album ends with the epic "Black Sarcophagus", a real masterpiece indeed.

Sum: With such a varied musical story and diverse lyrics and vocal styles makes this album really worth your time. But beware, you will play this album more than one time.

The record also featuring a stunning packaging by Drew Speziale (CIRCLE TAKES THE SQUARE), Comes as a single LP, heavy stock, custom die-cut gatefold cover with metallic gold line work throughout the art and 4 panel insert. A must have item :) It's not only the cover that is excellent art, the hole package of the songs make this pure and beautiful art.

Elder - Staving Off Truth

ELDER, the heavy psych band hailing from Boston, USA with their fourth full length album "Reflections of a Floating World” reaches the 6th place on the Tune of The Day's TOP 100 album list of the Best Albums 2017.

This is an album that suits the autumn darkness that hides on the doormat. The main man Nick DiSalvo claims that COLOUR HAZE and DUNGEN are "the bands that have really influenced the methodology or the philosophy behind the new direction". I see the point, as that is something that's bubbles in ELDERS music, even if the sound is pretty varied and heavily based around rock and metal and engine steams heaviness and riffs from bands like BLACK SABBATH and SLEEP and some psychedelia from ELECTRIC WIZARD.

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

ELDER, the heavy psych band hailing from Boston, USA have released their fourth full length album "Reflections of a Floating World". About two and a half year ago I praised their third album "Lore" here on Tune Of The Day.

The main man Nick DiSalvo claims that COLOUR HAZE and DUNGEN are "the bands that have really influenced the methodology or the philosophy behind the new direction". I see the point, as that is something that's bubbles in ELDERS music, even if the sound is pretty varied and heavily based around rock and metal and engine steams heaviness and riffs from bands like BLACK SABBATH and SLEEP and some psychedelia from ELECTRIC WIZARD.

"Reflections of a Floating World" is 6 track album that clocks in at 1hr 4 min. Their lengthy songs are told as stories, unfolding and undulating across genre boundaries and into new kosmische territory. This is an epic album that floats between sonic soundscapes of progressive rock and hypnotic psychedelia. ELDER have grown as a band and have delivered a full point album once again. It's really fun to hear how everything has improved since "Lore" and that was a very good album. The album needs some time to fall into place, but when it does, you will be stuck forever, well at least for some time :)

Pixies - Where Is My Mind

One PIXIES. There is and have existed and will always only be one PIXIES. When Black Francis caught up with snake with Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering in Boston in the mid 80's, to slam art punk, nobody could imagine that now, thirty years later, they would be counted as one of it late 20th century most important band. But so it is. Without PIXIES there would not been a NIRVANA, No BLUR, No WEEZER, Maybe Not even a RADIOHEAD. What poor world we had lived in.

But now, luckily, we live in the world where PIXIES actually not only existed but also exists. Where Black Francis, still a bit rounder but still as intense, shines out his surreal texts about space and biblical violence over an explosive mat of psychedelic noise-surf-punk pop. To quote Black Francis: Death to The PIXIES, long they must live!

During his first incarnation, PIXIES released an EP and four albums, now regarded as bell classics. "Come on Pilgrim", "Surfer Rosa", "Doolittle", "Bossanova" and "Trompe Le Monde" are all classics when critics draw their world's best recordings. In 1993, they split. Black Francis became Frank Black and released solo records and Kim Deal started THE BREEDERS before reconnecting in the winter of 2004. 2013 Kim Deal dropped off and replaced by Paz Lenchantin (but, as we usually say, changing the world's coolest bassist to the world's second coolest bassist Is a so-called luxury problem).

In 2014, the album "Indie Cindy" released the EPs group since the reunion, and in 2016, PIXIES first album came with new material since "Trompe Le Monde" in 1991. "Head Carrier" was well received by critics and audiences and gives the image of a band that still has plenty of miles to walk on its crooked, spicy rock road.

THE PIXIES are an American alternative rock band formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts. Until 2013, the band comprised Black Francis (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, backing vocals) and David Lovering (drums). The band disbanded acrimoniously in 1993, but reunited in 2004. After Deal left the band in 2013, the Pixies hired Kim Shattuck as a touring bassist, but she was soon replaced by Paz Lenchantin who eventually settled in as a permanent member.

THE PIXIES music contains elements including psychedelia, noise pop, hard rock, and surf rock. Francis is THE PIXIES primary songwriter; his often surreal lyrics cover offbeat subjects such as extraterrestrials, incest, and biblical violence.

Today's tune "Where Is My Mind?" is taken from 1988 debut album "Surfer Rosa". The song was written by frontman Black Francis while he attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, inspired by his experiences while scuba diving in the Caribbean. He later said he had "this very small fish trying to chase me. I don't know why—I don't know too much about fish behavior." Although the song was never released as a single, it is one of the band's signature songs. A live version of the song recorded at 2004's Coachella was released free through BitTorrent.

Astronoid - Incandescent

ASTRONOID is a five-piece band from Boston, MA with influences ranging from DEVIN TOWNSEND and Mew to Alcest and Cynic. Their first full length album, being released by Blood Music in 2016, is part of an evolving experience that complements their two acclaimed EP’s from 2012-13, "Stargazer" and "November". The driving rhythms, subtle time signatures and soaring vocal harmonies combine to create an auditory cloud to lift you into the ether. There’s always something new to discover hidden within the dense layers of thrashy guitar riffs and euphoric vocals. Lyrically, the record conveys a disillusioned and hopeful view of the world as a whole.

Gozu - Nature Boy

Boston based GOZU have released a brand new album "Revival" where we going to get a taste from with the new single/video "Nature Boy".

At their core, GOZU is a bad ass American rock band. They’ve got heavy riffs in tow and bang out tunes loud enough to piss off the neighbors. GOZU is a songwriting machine, one that is able to churn out loud, hard hitting compositions without sacrificing the meaning behind the songs or the band. Gruff and dirty when it needs to be just as it’s swift and soulful when the time is right.

GOZU first appeared on the scene in 2009 with the release of their seven track EP. Consisting of members of bands such as WARGASM and CLOUDS. After a line-up change which brought on board bassist Jay Cannava of Miltown and Clouds infamy, GOZU continues to chug along at its own pace. Small Stone Records snapped up GOZU in 2009 and they released their critically acclaimed album “Locust Season.” GOZU spent the next year touring the Northeast with bands like ST. VITUS, PALLBEARER, FU MANCHU, HELMET, ELDER, LO PAN among others.

Following the success of Locust Season in 2010, GOZU returned to Mad Oak Studios and The Bridge Sound and Stage in 2013 to record their second full length album “The Fury of a Patient Man.” 2014 the band added Warhorse (Southern Lord) drummer Mike Hubbard to the mix. With the key members in tact, GOZU embarked ontheir first European tour playing the Holy Grail of festivals Roadburn and Dessert Fest with CHURCH OF MISERY and KVELERTAK.

In 2015, Gozu headed into Wild Arctic studio and recorded their third album. However, it is their first album on their new label, Ripple Music.

With a new label and a new album, only great things lie ahead for this juggernaut ensemble built on the foundation of pure rock, soul, and metal.

Dropkick Murphys - Rose Tattoo

Friday, a day you can pinch a beer, then it fits great with a little folk punk, right?
The American punk rock band Dropkick Murphys has just released their eighth album "Signed and Sealed in Blood" we were going to play a song from. The band formed in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1996. The band was initially signed to independent punk record label Hellcat Records, releasing five albums for the label, and making a name for themselves locally through constant touring and yearly St. Patrick's Day week shows, held in and around Boston. The 2004 single "Tessie" became the band's first and one of their biggest charting singles to date. The band's final Hellcat release, 2005's The Warrior's Code, included "I'm Shipping Up to Boston", which was featured in the Academy Award-winning movie The Departed and went on to become one of the band's biggest singles, one of their best-known songs, and an anthem for Boston sports teams.

The band is out touring atm and will visit Sweden in the end of the month, for other dates check below.

Todays tune "Rose Tattoo" is taken from the eighth studio album "Signed and Sealed in Blood" by the Dropkick Murphys. It was released in January 8, 2013 on the band's Born & Bred Records label. The album's title comes from the lyrics of the first single, "Rose Tattoo". The band show off their ink with “Rose Tattoo,” a lilting folk song that uses Ken Casey’s tattooed skin to weave a larger story about the band, its hometown, and its fans. “The pictures tell the story,” Casey sings in a punky brogue during the first verse, his voice drawing equally from punk rock and Celtic folk.

Ichabod - Huckleberry

Today we serve  a crushing mix of classic psychedelic/rock, metal, punk, & good old Boston Hardcore. "Dream Scapes From Dead Space" is "Ichabod's" fifth full length. During the first listening of the album, it strikes me that it's an incredible creativity that oozes out of these men, it is thick, with really sludgy riffs that simmer up of the soundscape that builds up, very interesting and it captures me directly.

Ichabod merge everything from Stoner, Alt, Punk, Doom, Sludge, and Prog Rock in this stellar 5th release. So the record is very hard to categorise. It's like they squeezing lightly on all styles, if one would take references from other bands I'd probably fill a whole page with the band names. So I recommend that you check this up at once.
