Monday, new week, time for us to hail a album with "Record Of he Week".
HÄXMÄSTAREN, the Gothenburg’s stoner/doom/sludge behemoths serves us with a release of their explosive sophomore album "Sol I Exil"!
HÄXMÄSTAREN is from Gothenburg, Sweden formed in early 2017. Debut album "Haexprocess" was released in 2018, and the band self released the follow up, "Sol I Exil" in March 12, 2021 and then they signed a deal with the Swedish Majestic Mountain Records for a proper release, the Vinyl got shipped in the end of August, where the wax came in a wicked, transparent gren and yellow haze. Almost looks like an eye of a "HÄXMÄSTARE", lol.
"Sol I Exil" is a flaming sledgehammer of stoner doom and blackened sludge, walking the thin line between blackened sludge and traditional heavy metal. Already from the opening tune "Blood Moon" they serve us with banging hard with breakneck riffage, whiskey soaked vocals that at times gets terribly angry, spits and hisses, the end result is brilliant. "Millennium Phenomenon" is a fablous piece with rumbling bass line and thundering drums along with some ferocious guitar playing, and serves us with a hypnotic guitar riff and searing solos that makes me cringe. "Wavelurker" and "Growing Horns" shows the blackened side of the band, here the musical influence palette gotten some more choices, where the mix of selected ingredients are very wise. The metal is still thick as syrup and wonderfully crunchy on the blackened parts. Where in "Children Of The Mountain" they set fire on the blackened side, the guttural growls haunts out it's own extremities with a surging energy. Some sludgy doom roots in "Dödskult Ritual" and the title tune "Sol I Exil", where the lyrics are sung in their Swedish mother tongue. The later one closes the album with a swinging groove, with some doomy vocals that burst out to the hallowed howls of the damned, cleavery musican ship between the members serves us marvelous drumming, clear and distorted bass and a bautiful guitar handeling. "Sol I Exil" is a marvelous album, highly recomended.
Sum: "Sol I Exil" is a top notch doomy piece that you can't miss!
Today's tune "Sol I Exil", the title tune from the new album, enjoy!
AMENRA’s first release for Relapse Records is at once a departure and a momentous act of deliverance. Stepping outside the run of albums titled "Mass I-VI", "De Doorn" casts a 21-year journey from the heart of Belgium’s crusading hardcore scene to world-renowned, spiritually guided innovators in an enthralling new light.
The album "De Doorn" is set to be release date: June 25, 2021. Recorded by Tim De Gieter at Much Luv studio, Lembeke BE.
Mastered by Frank Arkright, Abbey road studio, London UK.
Ritual, remembrance and hard-won rebirth have always been at the heart of AMENRA’s colossal, soul-purging approach. Centered around frontman Colin H. Van Eeckhout, but marked out by a transcendent unity of purpose, their albums have acted as totemic, personal marker points, a means to process individual grief as a shared, cathartic experience. Their live shows are acts of incendiary, communal exorcism that reach a cusp of sublime, out-of-body experience. A closely knit collective, they transport you to a febrile state where confrontation of pain, transformation and true healing can occur.
AMENRA is a Belgian band from Kortrijk. It was formed in 1999 by vocalist Colin H. van Eeckhout and guitarist Mathieu Vandekerckhove, who now perform alongside drummer Bjorn Lebon, guitarist Lennart Bossu and bassist Tim De Gieter. Among a number of other works, they have released six studio albums in the "Mass" series, the latest of them through Neurot Recordings. The band's unique musical style, characterised by brooding atmospheres and spiritual intensity, is rooted in doom metal, hardcore punk and post-rock. Their live performances, accompanied by visual art, have been described as "entrancing communions". In 2005, AMENRA formed Church of Ra, a collective of collaborating artists which now includes OATHBREAKER and THE BLACK HEART REBELLION.
Today's tune "De Evenmens" is taken from the upcoming album "De Doorn", enjoy!
Monday, time for us to introduce "Record Of The Week"
The New Orleans sludge lords EYEHATEGOD is back after a long break of seven years. It has been a long, long wait for fans of the NOLA sludge metal, luckily with their sixth album, making a comeback of sorts, it's with great delight "A History Of Nomadic Behavior" given a good return and the result was worth the wait for the dusty, almost forgotten EYEHATEGOD.
EYEHATEGOD is know for been a soundtrack for the troubled masses, survivor’s music, you know, dirty and bad music for bad and dirty times. It really is something this time too. EYEHATEGOD follows the same blueprint since they founded the band in 1988.
"A History Of Nomadic Behavior" revels in all the usual EYEHATEGOD themes—desperation, depression, poverty, addiction—but, as Williams is quick to point out, the songs aren’t necessarily about anything. From the opening "Built Beneath The Lies", the lurching Sabbathian riffs are meted out with righteous, snarling fury shows immediately that that EYEHATEGOD hasn’t slowed or mellowed with time but with Mike Williams caustic anger, broken-limbed riffs by Jimmy Bower, Aaron Hill's filthy snappy drums, Gary Mader hard-hitting bass strings. The path of how things are going to be is set and this continues with chugging riffs in "The Outer Banks", a tune where you simply get run over. Followed by the bombastic "Fake What’s Yours" and the more abstract "Three Black Eyes". Squeaky, messy, and beech begins the punkish "Current Situation" where the frustration seeps through the heavy riffs. "High Risk Trigger" is a marvelous piece about "triggered as an addict". "The Trial Of Johnny Cancer" opens up with some spoken word, a half-paced piece with some lyrics like "I’d rather be a corpse than a coward". This followed by a small surprise in "Smoker’s Piece", a bluesy jazz number with shuffling drums, picked guitar and walking bass. "Circle Of Nerves" features spiraling, descending guitar licks, and abusive rhythm breaks. Some dentists squeaky guitar sound opens up the album closer "Every Thing, Every Day" with the lyrics "Kill your boss" over and over! Thirty-three years into a career of debauchery, abuse, and dirt, a global pandemic, and they are still broke, so it is absolutely incredible that EYEHATEGOD is here at all where many others have dissolved and withered away. EYEHATEGOD earns my respect for surviving and continue to playing and committing hard. They are
Sum: "A History Of Nomadic Behavior" is a welcome return.
Lead vocalist Mike IX Williams said of the album: "During this recording, I thought a lot about how stupid humanity has become and how America is now completely divided with these people who don't believe in science and blindly follow liars and nonsensical ideologies. Some of those feelings may have found their way into these songs, but it is mostly subliminal."
Today's tune "Circle Of Nerves" is taken from "A History Of Nomadic Behavior" which was released March 12, 2021.
"100%" is the first single from SONIC YOUTH's 1992 album "Dirty". It was released in 1992 on DGC. The song was dedicated to the band's friend Joe Cole, who was killed by a gunman in 1991. The lyrics were written by Thurston Moore.
Today's version is made by Germany's destructive duo MANTAR, SONIC YOUTH’s 100% with its skateboarding video and slacker cool vibes was about as commercial as that band got, the tune was release on thier "Grungetown Hooligans II" where the duo have decided to showcase their musical roots and record a DIY covers album of their biggest influences from the 90’s.
Their version of Sonic Youth’s “100%” transforms the original’s disaffected drawl into a significantly heavier, shamelessly headbangable, monster, enjoy today's cover.
Thursday, time to shake some life in the cover session. On dark Thursdays we usually find a nice cover of a nice tune.
"Can I Run" is a tune by the American rock band L7, taken from the fourth studio album "Hungry For Stink", released by Slash Records in July 1994.
"Are these sensible shoes on my feet
I wear my shades so our eyes don't meet
I'm scared every fuckin' day
I wear my headphones so i can't hear what you say"
This is probably a song about a lonely and scared soul in a violent society.
Today's cover is made by the German rockers MANTAR, the tune is released on thier latest cover album "Grungetown Hooligans II".
MANTAR has been busy making records and touring, more or less all around the world and the absurd idea of being a "professional band" has surprisingly become real. An incredible journey, more than you could have expected after the debut "Death By Burning" 2014. Nevertheless, after five years in which the band surprisingly became a "job", you had to ask yourself how you could continue to entertain yourself in the future. Treat yourself with good clean fun, without expectations and without fixed goals. The idea of a cover album came just in time. However, it was also clear from the start that no one would need any other loveless covers from SLAYER, SABBATH or BLACK FLAG. At least MANTAR didn't need them. The songs were recorded in Hanno's living room in Gainesville, Florida, except for the drums, which where record in a studio in Hamburg to be safe. It was then mixed in the "Black Bear Studio", on eof the cornerstones of the Florida punk scene. MANTAR has always been as DIY as possible when producing their records, but with the cover songs the band wanted to go further in terms of home recording. Even back then, the term "grunge" was as silly as the words "punk" or "heavy metal", so the similar shitty title of the record was quickly found. Being super pros, the first version was deleted by mistake, so the thing now is called "Grungetown Hooligans II". It also sounds a lot "better".
Today's tune "Southern Man" is a song by Neil Young from his album "After The Gold Rush". The album was released in 1970.
The cover is made by the US sludge band INTER ARMA, who celebrate their past on "Garbers Days Revisited", their new covers record, recorded in between tours in support of their critically acclaimed 2019 full-length "Sulphur English". The record, named after the band's practice space, was once again tracked at Dark Art Audio in Madison, TN. INTER ARMA show off their wide array of influences, tackling covers by NINE INCH NAILS, CRO-MAGS, PRINCE, NEIL YOUNG, VENOM and MINISTRY in the INTER ARMA garb. "Garbers Days Revisited" sees INTER ARMA redefining the very aspects of the music that inspired and influenced them from their very beginnings.
"Hunter Thompson used to punch out pages of Ernest Hemingway on his typewriter "just to get the feeling of what it was like to write that way," drummer T.J. Childers comments. "The same can be said for anyone learning a great cover song: there's a lot to be deduced from the information there. Actually learning the songs can lead to inspirational, new musical ideas."
T.J. Childers - Drums
Steven Russell - Guitars
Trey Dalton - Guitars
Mike Paparo - Vocals
Andrew Lacour - Bass
INTER ARMA's inspiration can indeed be felt throughout the 8 tracks therein; from the melancholic, spoken intro leading to the explosive, riff-heavy take on the Neil Young classic "Southern Man", (hear it below) to the nearly pitch-black metallic approach of HÜSKER Dü's "The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill", every song on "Garbers Days Revisited" captures the sounds that make INTER ARMA one of the scene's most unique and creative bands.
Childers continues, "Covers have been an integral part of Inter Arma since the beginning of the band and some of these songs have a direct lineage while others are a little more... obscure. As timing would have it, we hope this provides a bit of an escape for listeners, given the surreal circumstances we're in at the moment, because after all, great art should provide an escape which is part of why we chose to do this: sometimes you just wanna be runnin' down a dream..."

Finnish Blackened Sludge does not belong to the ordinary, GRAVE SIESTA is a band that scissors around the land of a thousand lakes for a century and with the 3:rd release able to reach out to the masses and found it's the way to me. To be honest, I am not sure if I ever heard any band from Finland similar to this, please correct me if I'm wrong.
The third long-player "Voidward Spin" is an amazing piece of music that grows like a plant, hopefully, it will be fully grown after a few months :)
Todays tune "Intolerance" is take from the 3:rd album "Voidward Spin", Live footage from Skeneraator Festival 2019, Estonia and Sopenkorven kesanto, Lahti, Finland, 2019, enjoy!
United by a mutual desire to escape the downward spiraling rat races in modern society, the sludge/doom trio RONGEUR has dwelled in the Norwegian underground for six years now. The trio batter you with bitter grievances and violent assaults of desperate cries and distortion, dragging your beaten body through the inner circles of hell, just to declare that nothing has been accomplished.
The trio have previously released a collection of demos on CD and cassette, a digital split with AMPMANDENS DOTRE, as well as a two tracked 7" vinyl. "An Asphyxiating Embrace" is their first full length album and offers a frustrated observation of the human inadequacy to make rational choices. Dressed in a sludge fest with accompanying post-metal bells and whistles, the record spells doom over mankind and is surely nothing like taking a stroll in the park, even though the record makes for good jogging music.
The dystopian stoner/sludge/doom metal trio Rongeur was formed in the autumn of 2012. The band is known for playing loud, having a shared love for old tube amps, feedback, distortion, where NEUROSIS, SEIGMEN and BLACK SABBATH could be the closest of reference. RONGEUR therefore offer varying levels of angst, and batter you with their unique brand of heavy.
Dag Ole: bass and vocals
Audun: guitar and vocals
Jon: drums and vocals
Today's tune "Weltschmerz" is taken from the debut album "An Asphyxiating Embrace" out 9th of March 2018.
"Garden Of Dismalism" is a brand new single/video by the Windsor, Ontario and the Hardcore/Noise Metal band MINORS taken from their latest album "Abject Bodies", released 22nd February 2019.
A question is raised about the music. Is this Metal? Punk? Hardcore? Sludge? Experimental Noise? well is a juggernaut of vitriol and rage, noisy punky metalcore with an uncompromising and hypnotic bend of sludge and hardcore or as they call their music, "Deaf Rock". With a foot in each of the aforementioned styles, Canada's finest tap into a misanthropic unparalleled rage on "Atrophy" that few bands can even hope to achieve. Whilst their output prides itself on its negativity, with a chilling snarl, the future is bright for MINORS and wherever they choose to go from here.
"The lyrics for "Garden Of Dismalism" are pretty personal. So when we decided to create a video for the song, we wanted it to cover a separate concept entirely. We came up with an idea of two friends having a conversation about their fears, but instead of it helping to clear their minds, the conversation spirals into something else altogether. The rest of it, we will leave for the viewer to interpret for themselves."
The Vinyl is released on
Enjoy today's tune. The Video is Directed by Rob Maslanka.
Slavery bound by one’s own hand. Embrace the shackles.
Fortress infinite expanding, human data wasteland
Decimated war torn vastness of solitude
Blinding logic lattice unfolds across a blank static void
Decimation. Torrent monolithic, inferno.
Charge maelstrom awakens. Increasing velocity never satisfied
A steady stream of everything from the underground heavy scene, including but not limited to stoner, doom, and heavy psych.
In ‘98 Greg Wilkinson started playing shows with a drum machine, bass, circuit bent noise generators while singing under the moniker Mr Brainoil. Playing gigs solo during that time would come to an end in early 2000 when Nathan Smith would join on guitar. Later that year, Ira Harris would round the lineup on drums to its final and only formation changing its moniker to BRAINOIL.
Today's tune "Blank Static Void" with BRAINOIL, taken from "Singularity to Extinction" LP/CD released October 19, 2018 on Tankcrimes, order it here!
"Gold & Grey" is the latest release from Georgia’s finest, BARONESS. It's been 12 years since they started their journey thru the color palette with the 2007's "Red" Album to today's "Gold & Grey". It certainly been an wild colorful ride for the guys, lineup changes, bus crash is a few milestones they have been true over the years. "Gold & Grey" was released on June 14th, 2019 on Abraham Hymns.
"Gold & Grey" is a massive piece of music with a lot of stylistic changes and instrumental experimentation. The Baizley cover art is absolutely stunning, the painting was born from a deeply personal reflection on the past 12 years of this band’s history, and will stand as the 6th and final piece in their chromatically-themed records. While "Gold & Grey" found the outfit once again working with "Purple" producer Dave Fridmann (THE FLAMING LIPS, MOGWAI), sequestering themselves at Fridmann’s remote upstate New York Tarbox Road Studio, the 17-track album ushered in two significant changes: a decidedly different recording process and guitar player Gina Gleason’s debut on a BARONESS recording that resulted in the band’s most collaborative and emotionally evocative release to date.
"Gold & Grey" opens with the high paced progressive "Front Toward Enemy", an high energy and angry tune, cool riffing and strumming bass lick. Follows up with the groovy and gothic tune "I’m Already Gone". "Seasons" rolls out of the box with some incredible drumming signed Sebastian Thomson, sounds almost like drum n bass before the rest of the orchestra spices it up with a progressive touch and make it pure magic. The tune have so many sounds that it makes it impossible to label it. "Sevens" is a beautiful piano interlude, before it leave some space to "Tourniquet", low-fi vocals and acoustic guitar that begins the tune before it reaches full blom with excellent twin-guitars. "Anchor’s Lament" soft interlude with some strings until it clear the way for the progressive rocker "Throw Me An Anchor" that have a wide spread from garage rock to progressive sound. The album slows down to a live touching "I’d Do Anything". "Blankets Of Ash" is a war ambient interlude before the atmospheric and soft piece "Emmett-Radiating Light" that continues with a softy "Cold Blooded Angels", a tune that slowly moves forward until it half way true shifts into a heavier sound. "Crooked Mile" is a light guitar interlude. "Broken Halo" have some excellent twin guitar playing. "Can Oscura" is an instrumental piece that steps out a bit with it Krautrock sound. "Borderlines" is majestic rocker with it's monumental riffage and catchy space chorus. The last interlude "Assault On East Falls" tickles on your nerve before the album closer "Pale Sun" that is another curve-ball on the album that show the great musicianship that BARONESS have in 2019 and "Gold & Grey" is a varied and ambitious piece of music and an perfect conclusion of the band’s color-themed albums.
Sum: "Gold & Grey" is a work of art.
Gina Gleason (guitar), Sebastian Thomson (drums),
John Baizley (vocals/guitar) and Nick Jost (bass).
Today's tune "Seasons", taken from the album "Gold & Grey", enjoy!

Southern California trio WARISH released their debut EP on RidingEasy Records via Brooklyn Vegan earlier this year.
Imagine if Incesticide era NIRVANA were crossed with Static Age era MISFITS. You’d have sinister low budget horror rock with a visceral, twisted weirdness and bludgeoning riffs. Some might call it nightmarish, we call it WARISH.
WARISH is a very newly minted SoCal trio formed in early 2018 that has wasted no time making its presence known. The band formed when guitarist/vocalist Riley Hawk and drummer Bruce McDonnell decided they wanted to try their hand at something more distinct than they’d done previously.
“We wanted to do simpler riffs and a fun live show,” Riley explains. “A little more punk, a little bit of grunge… a little evil-ish.”
Their sound takes cues from a variety of cool underground sounds and twists it all into an energetic and exciting fist to the face of dark fury. Hawk’s effect-laden vocals hearken to early BUTTHOLE SURFERS and David Yow’s tortured caterwaul in Scratch Acid. The guitars are heavy and powerful, though decidedly not straightforward cookie-cutter punk; more like Cobain’s and Buzz Osbourne’s wiry contortions. The rhythms bash and pummel right through it all with aggressive force ensuring that nothing gets overly complicated and the horrors keep coming throughout the 5-track, 11-minute debut.
SIGNO ROJO is a Hardcore punk/Sludge metal hybrid from Karlshamn, Sweden. A band that passed thru my stream of music a couple of times but finally gave it a chance and hey, sounds pretty good. The dark and heavy sludge punk that has a BARONESS/MASTODON feeling over it. They recently released a EP "End Of Tether" that sounds really good. The previous release was the album "Svårfödd" (2017), an album where they mix the native Swedish language with English.
SIGNO ROJO are:
Jonas - Vocals and Bass
Elias - Guitar
Ola - Guitar
Pontus - Drums
Today's tune "Dead Horse" is the second single taken from the album "Svårfödd", released November 24, 2017, enjoy!
Monday, new week, no "Record Of The Week", it's the day before the countdown starts, so today we play something that didn't reach up to the glorious 50 best albums of 2018.
And as usual, too much music, to little time. It's almost that I would like to play 2 songs every day to cover it all up, or make the album of the day, naa this is enough, but still, the count of all good records that were released during 2018 is incredible.
So to create together a neatly top 50 list have been very difficult to complete, it feels that it has been harder than ever to put together, am I getting older or is there to much to choose from, well I guess I need to narrow down my music taste to make life easier every year when it comes to this, you know, when you compare albums to each other it's pretty easy to decide which one is the better one and gets a better position, but after a few, it's getting harder and harder, after a bunch of records you get crazy and you will lose track in your count. So after many hours I finally decided my sprawling list of divine music, I hope you will enjoy the upcoming days here at Tune Of The Day!
One album that I have pretty recently start to spinning is MELVINS "Pinkus Abortion Technician", a pretty cool and odd record, check it up if you want something that is not normal. The eight-song album is the band’s first to feature two bass tracks on every song, with the bass players being Steve McDonald (REDD KROSS, OFF!) and Jeff Pinkus (BUTTHOLE SURFERS).
"The Modern Art Of Setting Ablaze" is the third studio album by the unrelenting, violent and primal rage from Germany's most ferocious duo MANTAR!
MANTAR is melting the most sinister elements of styles like Black Metal, Crust Doom and Sludge in their creations.
"The Modern Art Of Setting Ablaze" is a heavy piece of music, their boldest and bombastic release so far, a perfect album for autumn times when the darkness comes closer and closer eash day. The album opens up with the long intro "The Knowing" before it burst out more brutality with strong black metal influence in "Age Of The Absurd", where extremely guitar licks, howling screams by Hanno Klänhardt, drum beat like a thunderclouds patterns on the skins of the drummer boy Erinç Sakarya opens up the gateway to hell. "Seek + Forget" and "Taurus" follows the same route as already laid out, but with more catchy angryness in the melody and rhythm that punches you in an epic fist fight. "Midgard Serpent (Seasons of Failure)" is a groovy piece with slower, grinding pace, great melody and that continues on aggressive "Dynasty of Nails" and the more faster piece "Eternal Return" to the haunted organs intro in "Obey the Obscene" before the angry bird lands on stage. "Anti Eternia" is a more straight forward sludge piece, melodic riffing and rocking vocals in their best way. "The Formation of the Night" is a doomish melodic rocker, catchy with great riffing that continues with the groovy "Teeth of the Sea" and the album ends with the filthy melodic piece "The Funeral". As a listener, I feel that this is a solid release, really fun to listen to and it's absolutely their best album yet.
Sum: "The Modern Art of Setting Ablaze" is a filthy and heavy piece of music that works like a charm!
Today's tune "Seek + Forget" taken from "The Modern Art of Setting Ablaze", enjoy!
THE BAD LIGHT is a Delta Sludge/Americana trio from Santa Cruz, California. A band that suits great as it's the 4th of July, so happy independents day all Americans.
Initially forming as a jamming duo in 2009 of just guitar and drums, this group would eventually work in a female vocalist into their music. Inspired by an eclectic range of influences such as raw blues, psych, and heavy rock, THE BAD LIGHT alchemize basic elements to create a distinctive sound. In one critic’s words, they are “grounded in meditation while remaining heavy and melodic.”
With Edu Cerro of Santa Fe, Argentina, on guitar/vocals, Dana Shepard of St. Johns, Newfoundland, on drums and Celeste Deruisa of Santa Cruz, California on vocals, they’re sonically rooted to each members’ respective homelands.
Largely performing in their native town as a support to many big stoner/doom/sludge touring acts, THE BAD LIGHT has gained some notoriety among the stoner rock circle despite rarely performing outside of Santa Cruz.
Today's tune "Goodshit" is taken from the split EP "Bad Tuna". The Video clip is the first time they are playing this tune live on May 5th, 2017 at The Blue Lagoon in Santa Cruz, CA. Enjoy!
