Amenra - De Evenmens

AMENRA’s first release for Relapse Records is at once a departure and a momentous act of deliverance. Stepping outside the run of albums titled "Mass I-VI", "De Doorn" casts a 21-year journey from the heart of Belgium’s crusading hardcore scene to world-renowned, spiritually guided innovators in an enthralling new light.

The album "De Doorn" is set to be release date: June 25, 2021. Recorded by Tim De Gieter at Much Luv studio, Lembeke BE. Mastered by Frank Arkright, Abbey road studio, London UK.

Ritual, remembrance and hard-won rebirth have always been at the heart of AMENRA’s colossal, soul-purging approach. Centered around frontman Colin H. Van Eeckhout, but marked out by a transcendent unity of purpose, their albums have acted as totemic, personal marker points, a means to process individual grief as a shared, cathartic experience. Their live shows are acts of incendiary, communal exorcism that reach a cusp of sublime, out-of-body experience. A closely knit collective, they transport you to a febrile state where confrontation of pain, transformation and true healing can occur.

AMENRA is a Belgian band from Kortrijk. It was formed in 1999 by vocalist Colin H. van Eeckhout and guitarist Mathieu Vandekerckhove, who now perform alongside drummer Bjorn Lebon, guitarist Lennart Bossu and bassist Tim De Gieter. Among a number of other works, they have released six studio albums in the "Mass" series, the latest of them through Neurot Recordings. The band's unique musical style, characterised by brooding atmospheres and spiritual intensity, is rooted in doom metal, hardcore punk and post-rock. Their live performances, accompanied by visual art, have been described as "entrancing communions". In 2005, AMENRA formed Church of Ra, a collective of collaborating artists which now includes OATHBREAKER and THE BLACK HEART REBELLION.

Today's tune "De Evenmens" is taken from the upcoming album "De Doorn", enjoy!

Katatonia - City Burials

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"City Burials" stands as KATATONIAs new triumph of deep & enigmatic progressive rock. These Swedish kings have never taken a step back, always aiming to move forward as a band and always keep their own unique way in the creation of music that as a listener feels the recognition factor is near and easy to get acquainted with and that is what is done on "City Burials", you recognize vocalist Jonas Renkse's melancholy sound in an instant and this time he reaches new heights, which I didn't think was possible after 30 years of music-making. The fact that the band is being infected by Jonas Renkse's energetic quest to reach new heights is clear. The music is deep & enigmatic, where the band shows an enormously powerful, vividly emotional, and finely-honed creative instrumentation.

It's with a big smile I see the album spin, with a collection of moments constructed out of the fragments of an ever-evolving life. I feel the emotions floating in my body, where several moments give me happiness and joy, some sadness and it's really powerful that I almost fall down and start to cry. I follow Jonas Renkse guiding the true scenic landscape of the "City Glaciers" and "Winter Of Our Passing", powerful tunes along with "Flicker" in counterpoint to the quicker and hard riffing "Behind The Blood", "Fighters" and "Rein" to the more atmospheric pieces like "Heart Set To Divide" and the dark beauty "Vanishers" that featuring guest vocals Anni Bernhard (FULL OF KEYS). "City Burials" is one of the strongest release in their career and is a significant chapter in the KATATONIA legacy. An album that should not be missed. Highly recommended.

"City Burials" Released on April 24th, 2020 on Peaceville Records

Line up:
Jonas Renkse / vocals, guitar, keyboards
Anders “Blackheim” Nyström / guitar, keyboards, backing vocals
Niklas Sandin / bass
Daniel Moilanen / drums
Roger Öjersson / guitars

Sum: "City Burials" is an excellent release full of melancholy that only KATATONIA can do.

Today's tune "Lacquer" is taken from "City Burials", enjoy!

Agalloch - Plateau Of The Ages

New Week and time to reveal this week's "Record Of The Week".

"The Serpent and the Sphere" is the fifth full-length record from Portland's blackened folk metal maestros Agalloch,

It's been nearly four years since Agalloch released Marrow of the Spirit, an album almost universally hailed as a triumph among metal enthusiasts.

"The Serpent & the Sphere" is a nine track album with an excellent mix of songs. It was released on May 19, 2014 in Europe.

Agalloch have harnessed particular elements of their sound and the way to build up their world around the tunes in a familiar yet distinctly forward way. This album adds yet another unique representation of their sound to their varied discography. It is an album that reveals the band’s darkest, most meticulously crafted, and atmospherically surging work of their sixteen-year career.

"The Serpent & the Sphere" is captured by legendary producer/engineer Billy Anderson at Cloud City Studios in Portland, Oregon

The album represents the most glorious sounding Agalloch album to date. Making a guest appearance is guitarist Nathanaël Larochette of Canadian neo-folk band Musk Ox who wrote and provided the album’s acoustic interludes. "The Serpent and the Sphere" is a great addition to the band's legacy and a brilliant set of work, it's the most refined and generous album to date. This is one of those albums that is able to gain the perfect balance between the extreme and the quietly beautiful. The album have the perfect combination of black, metal, doom and folk influences.

This is something you need to have. If you have any doubts, then put on "Plateau Of The Ages" and hear the hunting twin guitar scream for you!

Todays tune “Plateau of the Ages”, the 13-minute monster, an instrumental beauty.

Deafheaven - Irresistible

Monday, a day when we present this week's "Record Of The Week".

Deafheaven is an American black metal band that formed in 2010. The San Francisco-based group began as a two-piece with George Clarke and Kerry McCoy who recorded and self-released a demo album together. After a warm reception, Deafheaven recruited three new members and began to tour. Before the close of 2010, the band signed to Deathwish Inc. and later released their debut album Roads to Judah in April 2011. A follow-up album, Sunbather, was released in 2013 which ended being one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year in the United States.

Deafheaven's musical style has been described as primarily black metal infused among post-metal and shoegazing influences.

Record Of The Week is the 2:nd album "Sunbather" by Deafheaven.  Recorded and engineered by Jack Shirley (Funeral Diner, Comadre) and designed by Nick Steinhardt (Touche Amore) "Sunbather" deals with the profound sadness found in the quest for one's personal perfection. Serving as an artistic lucid dream of warmth despite the stinging pain of life's cruel idealism.

The album is an melodic journey together with George Clarke's tortured vocals and Kerry McCoy's hypnotic guitar work, where most of the songs are hard crashing, but some that carries a twisted indie-like sensibility like todays tune in the nstrumental "Irresistible".  In "Sunbather" they have really experimented with sounds and created a really strength album that you should not miss.

A new guy to the band for this recording is the excellent percussionist Daniel Tracy.

"Sunbather" is a masterfully crafted work of art that will be renowned for years to come. Another good thing is that these guys will soon hit Swedish soil for a performance on this years Way Out West, this is something I will see, or at least try to!

Todays tune "Irresistible" is taken from the second studio album "Sunbather". The Jack Shirley-produced album was recorded in January 2013 and released on June 11, 2013 by Deathwish Inc.

Ajuna - Suntomb

A new week and a new album will be crowned with the great price "Record Of The Week", this time I'm turning myself towards our neighbours and greets the Danish band Ajuna welcome to Tune Of The Day and give them this weeks price to "Prisoners of the Sun".

Ajuna is hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, their music is a mixture of atmospheric post metal with roots of black metal.  It's dark and harsh toned with plenty of emotional suffering to be played with the cold and darkness that is getting on to us. A perfect album for November and it's well worth buying.

The debut album "Prisoners of the Sun" is recorded and mixed by producer Jacob Bredahl.
Ajuna consists of:
Anders Hufsa Andersen - Vocals,
Alex Hartfelt - Guitar / Vocals,
Frederik Trampe - Guitar / Vocals,
Peter Helmer Madsen - Bass,
Jesper Skovsted Pedersen - Drums

Todays tune "Suntomb" is taken from the debut album "Prisoners Of The Sun", released at September 27th, the leadsinger Anders Hufsa Andersen's comment on the song: "Suntomb is a metaphor for the psychiatric system and a prisoner of the sun is a person who needs psychopharmaca in order to function. It's about the fine line between being medicated until you can't recognize yourself or live a life dominated by psychotic episodes and paranoia."

Cult Of Luna - Light Chaser

Hello Sweden, Hello Umeå, Hello Cult of Luna.

Today we will listen to a track from the latest EP from the band called simple as "Vertikal II" that was released on September 17, 2013. The EP features three previously unreleased tracks that were written during the original Vertikal sessions, but not recorded. The CD and digital versions of the EP also feature a remix of "Vicarious Redemption" (originally on Vertikal) by Justin Broadrick of Jesu and Godflesh fame.

Vertikal II is seen as a continuation and completion of the band's "journey into the harshness of the monotone city landscape" that began with its early-2013 studio album, Vertikal. Cult of Luna guitarist Johannes Persson said, "With Vertikal II, we complete and end a chapter that, for the last few years, have been a big part of our lives. Now we leave the inner city and look up into the vast void above." At one point in the writing process, Cult of Luna considered releasing Vertikal as a double album, but scrapped the idea because, as Persson puts it, "double albums are hard, as it's hard to maintain a consistent quality." The band's idea then was to release a few additional tracks shortly after the release of the studio album as a continuation – a plan that was kept secret from both their fans and record label until the EP's masters were almost completed.

The remix of "Vicarious Redemption" by Justin Broadrick was not originally a part of the EP. Cult of Luna's record label pressured them to include a remix on the release. The band caved into the label's demands and asked them to get Broadrick to remix "Vicarious Redemption" out of spite because, at almost 19-minutes long, it was the most difficult song to work with. Persson, who said he believes remixes to be a "waste of time," said Broadrick was chosen because he is "one of the few people I'd trust with a remix," and later praised his work on this song as an "amazing way of doing a remix."

Todays tune “Light chaser”, is a dark piece with harshly growling repeating of the words “Onward, Forward” until his voice almost breaks.

Cult Of Luna - Passing Through

Once again a new week and it's time to present this weeks album. We stay in Sweden but travel up north to Umeå, were we will find the post-metal band "Cult of Luna". They formed from the remnants of a Umeå hardcore punk band called Eclipse in 1998. They slowly garnered critical appreciation and underground popularity with early releases Cult of Luna (2001) and The Beyond (2003) however, it is 2004's Salvation that can be considered their "breakthrough" release. This was followed by Somewhere Along the Highway in 2006, another largely well-received album.

In August 2006, the band released a remake of "Marching to the Heartbeats" from Somewhere Along the Highway entitled "Heartbeats" solely on the internet community MySpace. The song was available for download for a few days and was later removed. The point was to see if the song would be kept alive by file sharing, and was also apparently a statement against the conservative music industry, says keyboardist Anders Teglund in an interview.

In 2008 the band released its fifth album, Eternal Kingdom. It was released in Europe on June 16, followed by its release in the United States on July 8. In 2009 they released a DVD including a live performance from 2008, an interview with the band, as well as all of the band's videos. On October 18, 2009, the band released Eviga riket, a hardback book/audiobook covering the story and themes from Eternal Kingdom. The book and audiobook are bilingual, printed and spoken both in Swedish and English. The audiobook contains new pieces of music and soundscapes written by the band. Eviga riket was released the 23 of February 2010.

The latest release and the sixth album "Vertikal" grabs the nice price as The Record Of The Week here at Tune Of The Day. The album was released on January 25th, 2013. The album is thematically influenced by the film "Metropolis" a hypnotic backdrop of machinery and repetition.

Before the band started writing they were keen to find a theme that in a very direct way could be shown through the music, and they hope to have achieved this with the new album. They developed clear structures, very linear, refusing to over complicate the writing process. The album is a nice one indeed Vertikal is an interesting and accomplished hybrid, but it isn't perfect. In fact, it works best on a track-by track basis, though the record clearly aims to be its own holistic, all-encompassing universe. Persson says Fritz Lang's early sci-fi horror Metropolis served as a stylistic inspiration for an album "that was going to sound like a 'factory.'" After a dozen trips through, though, the sequencing and transitions still feel ineffective. The prelude "The One" doesn't funnel into what would have been the more daring gambit, "I: The Weapon". And the end of "Mute Departure" and the beginning of "In Awe Of" have nothing to do with the interlude that divides them, a 45-second synthesizer piece that seems to summon the legacy of Laurie Spiegel only as a perfunctory demonstration of erudition.

Todays tune "Passing Through" is taken from the latest release "Vertikal"
