VoiVod - Synchro Anarchy

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

Four decades, it's a long time of survival, something that few bands can handle. The French Canadians VOIVOD is one of them that continue to put out material that still keeps a high-quality stamp year after year. Amazing and very powerful and yet follow the trail of development from early origins of Punk, via trash path to the more progressive and technical ground where they are atm, a band that always played by their own rules.

"Synchro Anarchy" is the band's 15th studio release and, as fans have come to expect, it is yet is again an incomparable concoction of wild, quirky, and imaginative heaviness. Absolutely wonderful and not a hint of predictability. This record feels very well made, where the band has taken their time to create a proper album without letting go of the reins. Nine tunes that clock in just under fifty minutes.

The album opens up with "Paranormalium" where bizarre riffs and quirky tempos just fall in to the of VOIVOD's trademark. The melodic layers of 70s psychedelia and 80s thrash metal and progressive metal which creates a fun and very enjoyable foundation for Denis "Snake" Bélanger’s nasal vocal who marries in a nice way. The following title tune and "Planet Eaters" continues in the same path of oddly charming and great arrangements which creates a magical flow in the listening nerve. "Mind Clock" opens up with some half paced guitar picks, that slowly build up and the speed incres and the punk attitude winds its way in. The guitar friendly piece "Sleeves Off" has a great groove, partly Scandinavian garage rock mixed up with some MASTEDON progginess. "Holographic Thinking" is a catchy tune with some cool riffing and it's followed by the bass heavy "The World Today" with it's surf-rock vibe gives the album some spice and the bassist Rocky gets the spotlight. The album closes up with "Memory Failure" that wraps up the bag with some heavy riffing and thunderous drums and well written lyrics. "Synchro Anarchy" is a really nice album from the band, well worth the time you will spend with VOIVOD, an album that increase dramatically after each listen. The album was produced by Francis Perron. Released by Century Media Records on February 11th, 2022.

VOIVOD drummer Michel “Away” Langevin commented about the track and the video as follows: “On April 21st, 2021 an animated video for the song “Nothingface” popped up online (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uqv9G24YzI). The video was done by Pierre Menetrier on an Amiga computer in 1991, which I thought was beyond cool. The spectacular imagery and visual effects were just perfect for a Voïvod song. After wrapping up the recording and mixing of the “Synchro Anarchy” album, we all agreed on “Planet Eaters” as the first single/video. We thought the song had a vintage “Nothingface”/”Hatröss” vibe, so I immediately contacted Pierre and asked him if he could make a video for the song. Once again, the result is just mind-blowing. You just can’t get more Voïvodian than that!”

The Blue Stones - Shakin' Off the Rust

The Canadian blues rock duo THE BLUE STONES has resently released thier new album "Hidden Gems".

The band has released multiple songs as singles leading into their highly anticipated sophomore album release, "Hidden Gems", in Mars, 2021. The first of those is "Shakin’ Off The Rust", see it below, a tune, as Jafar explains, that very much serves as a mission statement for their renewed sense of confidence and newfound identity.

Although THE BLUE STONES were always more than a blues-rock duo, that’s especially true now on "Hidden Gems". The album was co-written and produced by Mutemath frontman Paul Meany. The ten song album was preceded by singles "Shakin' Off The Rust," "Grim," "Careless," "Let It Ride," and "Spirit." "Hidden Gems" was released on March 19, 2021.

Danko Jones - I Want Out

Canadian rockers DANKO JONES have released a music video for their brand new single, "I Want Out", which is the first track revealed from their forthcoming album. The tune is about life as isolated, a true pandemic song. See it below.

The new record, the band's 10th studio album, will be entitled "Power Trio" and is set to be released on August 27th. It also sees the band returning to their original label Sonic Unyon Records.

"Power Trio" was produced by Eric Ratz, who also worked with the band on their 2017 release "Wild Cat and 2015 album "bloodlusty Fire Music". See the tracklisting and watch the new video below:

Included in the video is none other than the hard rock profile and my friend Biffen Jansson from Gothenburg, who has worked with almost all Swedish bands that are something. Of course, he has also been on Danko on tour.

Michelle Gurevich - Here's The Part

Michelle Gurevich is a Canadian singer-songwriter, also known by her former stage name Chinawoman. Her music is influenced by her Russian heritage, and has been described as slowcore rock and "lo-fi pop". Her largest fanbase is in Eastern Europe.

Michelle Gurevich was born in Toronto, Ontario, to Russian immigrants and was raised with Russian as her first language. Her father was an engineer in Soviet Leningrad and her mother a Kirov ballerina (the subject of Gurevich's "Russian Ballerina"). Gurevich originally wanted to become a filmmaker and worked ten years in the industry before turning to music. "I eventually tried to write a song and found it was not only cheaper but much easier to get a good result."

Gurevich began her career recording in her bedroom. The stage name "Chinawoman" was chosen as a spur-of-the-moment joke when Garageband prompted her for a band name.

Michelle Gurevich has cited Alla Pugacheva, Adriano Celentano, Charles Aznavour, Yoko Ono, Francis Lai, Nino Rota, Xavier Dolan, Todor Kobakov, Jennifer Castle, and filmmaker Federico Fellini as influences on her music. Her vocal style reminds me of a female version of Leonard Cohen, it's really good.

In 2020, Gurevich moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, with her Danish wife and their 2-year-old daughter.

Saga - Humble Stance

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Humble Stance" is a tune by the Canadian progressive rock band SAGA. Taken from the first studio album and was originally released 8 April 1978.

SAGA was are from Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Jim Crichton and Welsh-born vocalist Michael Sadler were the principal songwriters. The band had numerous line-up changes over the years. Ian and Jim Crichton were the only two original members who appeared on every album. Sadler appeared on every release, apart from the 2009 album "The Human Condition". Keyboardist Jim Gilmour was with the band from 1979, making his debut on the album "Silent Knight". Drummer Steve Negus performed with SAGA until 1986. The lineup was supplemented by many session musicians and live performers from the late 1980s to the late 2000s.

SAGA have been awarded gold and platinum albums worldwide and have sold more than eight million albums.

"Humble Stance" is one of only few songs on which Michael Sadler plays bass guitar, while Jim Crichton plays keyboard chords. As it is a regular part of the live setlis - unlike "It's Time" or "No Stranger", which also feature the same constellation - fans usually know that SAGA are going to start playing "Humble Stance" as soon as Sadler takes over Jim's bass guitar.

2017 marked SAGA's 40th anniversary. The band that has combined hard rock, progressive rock and pop like no other celebrated their anniversary with a tour around the globe, saying thank you and farewell to the fans… for now. Now, one year later, the exciting live recording "So Good So Far - Live At Rock Of Ages" sees its release. SAGA's performance video for the song "Humble Stance" can be seen below.

Featuring the most iconic of songs that SAGA has been known and loved for by fans for more than 40 years, "So Good So Far" delivers the epitome of the band's long and proud history — all recorded at the Rock Of Ages festival in Seebronn, Germany in 2017 on both audio and video. SAGA, the headliner of the evening played, an energetic one-and-a-half-hour set in front of thousands of festival goers, featuring the best of 21 SAGA studio albums with classics such as "On The Loose", "Humble Stance", "Wind Him Up" and "Don't Be Late".

SAGA has a very special history with the legendary Rock Of Ages festival in Seebronn, Germany. Founder Horst Franz invited us to perform for the very first one in 2006! Fast forward to 2017 — SAGA returns to the coveted Saturday night stage by special request, celebrating the band's 40th anniversary with our 'Final Chapter' tour".

Riot City - In The Dark

RIOT CITY from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is one of those young bands that represent the new face of Canadian metal. RIOT CITY's debut album "Burn The Night" is an amalgam of ripping and hot heavy metal, created in pure and youthful madness.

Leather, steel, and spikes are the signum for these guys and yes JUDAS PRIEST is the main influence. "Burn The Night" was released May 2019 on the classic Greek Heavy Metal label No Remorse Records. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, Canada these rippers have been around since about 2011.

Music is pure traditional heavy metal from the early 80s. Dual guitars, screaming "Rob" vocals, intense drumming and cool bass licks that cover 40-minute ride of delicious heavy metal. Even the cover of the album has a "Screaming For Vengeance" inspired artwork.

Minors - Garden Of Dismalism

"Garden Of Dismalism" is a brand new single/video by the Windsor, Ontario and the Hardcore/Noise Metal band MINORS taken from their latest album "Abject Bodies", released 22nd February 2019.

A question is raised about the music. Is this Metal? Punk? Hardcore? Sludge? Experimental Noise? well is a juggernaut of vitriol and rage, noisy punky metalcore with an uncompromising and hypnotic bend of sludge and hardcore or as they call their music, "Deaf Rock". With a foot in each of the aforementioned styles, Canada's finest tap into a misanthropic unparalleled rage on "Atrophy" that few bands can even hope to achieve. Whilst their output prides itself on its negativity, with a chilling snarl, the future is bright for MINORS and wherever they choose to go from here.

"The lyrics for "Garden Of Dismalism" are pretty personal. So when we decided to create a video for the song, we wanted it to cover a separate concept entirely. We came up with an idea of two friends having a conversation about their fears, but instead of it helping to clear their minds, the conversation spirals into something else altogether. The rest of it, we will leave for the viewer to interpret for themselves."

Calgary-based hard rock metal quintet KOBRA AND THE LOTUS have returned with their new studio album "Evolution", which was released at September 20th on Napalm Records.

The new LP sees the band imbued with a new fire that comes through by way of undeniable hooks, soaring guitar riffs, marching drum beats, and the soulful, bombastic vocal delivery of lead singer Kobra Paige.

Zaum - The Enlightenment (Part I)

ZAUM is a passage toward the dark realizations of ancient civilization; in the form of a monolithic doomy mantra based meditative experience forged by bass and drums interwoven by sitar and synth textures. Based in New Brunswick – their live presence is very true to its recorded form featuring McDonald's both melodic and dark vocal styles met with elements of sectional Mongolian throat singing. Observers experience a calming process of reality whereby the astral and physical planes can co-exist and be understood from a natural perspective.

Their debut album "Oracles" released in June 2014 was reviewed nearly 100 times - subject to much critical acclaim primarily throughout Europe. Dead Quiet - Grand Rites

"Grand Rites" is the second album release from the Heavy Metal/Stoner Rock band DEAD QUIET.

DEAD QUIET hails from Vancouver, BC and was formed in 2013 from the ashes of the guitarist and vocalist Kevin Keegan’s former band, BARN BURNER, and the rest of the band members ain't any rookies, on bass we have Aaron “Boon” Gustafson (ANCIIENTS, ex-3 INCHES OF BLOOD (live), ex-SPREADEAGLE), on guitars Brock MacInnes (ANCIIENTS, TOBEATIC, ex-VENOMOUS TUSK, PERCHERON, ROTTING HILLS, THE BLOOD RIVER BAND, ex-HAMMER OF HADES), on keyboards Justin Hagberg (WORSE, BLACK WIZARD (live), ALLFATHER, ex-3 INCHES OF BLOOD, KLANDESTIN, RITUAL DICTATES, ex-ROADRUNNER UNITED, ex-THE VILLAIN AVIAN SYMPHONY) and on drums Jason Dana (ex-KAREN FOSTER, ex-SPREADEAGLE).

DEAD QUIETs follow up album "Grand Rites" is a mixture of 70s hard rock and melodic doom metal. An album where they seek to meld melody with catastrophe as they weave through a dissonant landscape of crushing metallic riffs and somber choral musings.

The album opens up with "Moon Curser" a classic layout with a big and catchy chorus, heavy riffing with powerful keyboards and an intensity vocalist that takes a step forward and releases his pain and anguish as a rough-haired alpha male. It follows up by "Blood Lovers", that opens up with a melodic guitar string until the stomping rhythm section jumps along, a great and really fun tune. "Corpse Revival" is a more thrashier piece, heavy, screamy, sludge and very enjoyable. "Disgraced" & "Fucking Oath" turn the mood down a notch with a half-paced melody, cleaner vocal, slightly easier playing. "Spiritual Abuse" follows the same path but with a more harsher vocal. "Dear Demon" opens up with acoustic guitars, whiskey-soaked vocal, the tune builds up slowly, heavy bass licks, thundering riffing and more angry vocals and a catchy chorus, see the video below. "Old Hopeless" is a real rocker with great and bombastic melody. The album closes up with the title track "Grand Rites", a tune that blends the whole album into one tune, soft melody, neatly guitar playing, clean vocals to harsh and heavy riffing, screaming and anarchy drumming.

DEAD QUIETs new album "Grand Rites" is a very impressive genre-spanning journey.

The Hazytones - Light Of The Day

THE HAZYTONES is a group of psychedelic rock band founded in 2015 in Montreal, Canada. The trio stuns the audience with his stage presence and intensity. The riff after riff, the group is known for his fat sound and heavy destructive saturation.

In September 2015, THE HAZYTONES began the production of their debut album with originals member, Mick Martel, Frédéric Couture and Antoine St-Germain. Recorded and mixed at ReelRoad studio located in Rosemont – La Petite-Partie in Montreal. After a few months of labor, the band launched his first single "Living On The Edge", followed by a music video. To mark the imminent release of their first titled album, the trio got on the road across Canada(23 shows) from August to September 2016.

The band launched their first titled album on September 22nd at La Rockette bar in Montreal at the Pop Montreal festival. The album was well received by the stoner/psychedelic community in Canada, USA, and Europe.

More recently, the band toured Europe (UK, Belgium, Switzerland, and France) and now it's time for Canada again, see all the dates below.

Devin Townsend Project - Stormbending

"Transcendence" is the seventeenth studio album by Canadian musician Devin Townsend, and the seventh album in the Devin Townsend Project series. It was released on September 9, 2016 via HevyDevy Records.

"Transcendence" is a top notch album by Townsend and one of the highlights from it is "Stormbending", (see the video) below and it just got even better with a music video to visually conjure its thematic message.

  
“’Stormbending’ was a song that meant a lot to me while writing and when asked to do a video, I really pushed for it,” began Townsend. “I think the idea of it was based around turning the tide of your own perspectives on things. It’s very easy to get caught up in the negativity and fear that kind of pervades most things lately and finding ways to fight that away and keep a strong outlook on your own life can be challenging. It’s really easy to give in to it all as opposed to consciously working to better your situation,” he added about the lyrical theme.

Finishing up his thoughts, the mainman continued, “The video was done by a team of fantastic people in Serbia, and although it’s a challenge to be included in ones own videos, we decided to do one that was more performance based and I think it turned out really quite well. Thanks to everyone involved for making this happen and thanks to you for listening and supporting if you do :)”

THE HAZYTONES is a stoner rock band founded in 2015 in Montreal. A trio that stuns the listener already on the first riff with it's occult intensity, a wonderful tripped out groove that flows out from the speaker.

Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker

Leonard Cohen, the hugely influential singer and songwriter whose work spanned nearly 50 years, died Monday at the age of 82. Cohen's label, Sony Music Canada, confirmed his death on the singer's Facebook page Thursday evening.

"It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away," the statement read. "We have lost one of music's most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief." A cause of death and exact date of death was not given.

After an epic tour, the singer fell into poor health. But he dug deep and came up with a powerful new album.

"My father passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles with the knowledge that he had completed what he felt was one of his greatest records," Cohen's son Adam wrote in a statement to Rolling Stone. "He was writing up until his last moments with his unique brand of humor."

"You Want It Darker" is the fourteenth and final studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, released on 21 October 2016, by Columbia Records. Cohen died three weeks after its commercial release, on 7 November 2016.

Leonard Norman Cohen, CC GOQ (21 September 1934 – 7 November 2016) was a Canadian singer, songwriter, poet and novelist. His work explored religion, politics, isolation, sexuality, and personal relationships. Cohen was inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour. In 2011, Cohen received one of the Prince of Asturias Awards for literature and the ninth Glenn Gould Prize.

I had the opportunity to work with Leonard and I must say he was a truly gentleman, very humble and nice.

Dopethrone - Shot Down

From Montréal, Quebéc’s comes the heaviest and muddiest trio DOPETHRONE, a band that was born in 2008 in Hochelaga, Montreal’s trashiest Ghetto.

They encompass the bleakness of black metal, the steadfastness of New Orleans-style sludge, scum fuck blues and a heavier-than-thou doom mentality. The riffs are thick, muddy, punishing, suffocating and destructive but still clean as a horse arse. The Demonic vocals are harsh, visceral and animal-like. And the mood is heavy and oppresive.

This trio have crafted another muddy EP with 3 violent tracks that will frighten any living being on this filthy earth. Traumatized demonically driven melody that almost make you hospitalized, I feel I need a respirator after one lap of this EP.

"1312" was Recorded and mixed by Jean-Baptiste Joubaud, At Studio Le Magnétophone in Montréal & Produced by JB Joubaud and DOPETHRONE. At this moment there is only digital files available at their bandcamp. Hopefully a Vinyl release will be made.

Blood Ceremony - Let it Come Down

BLOOD CEREMONY is a Canadian doom metal band formed in Toronto, Ontario. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2008, followed by Living with the Ancients in 2011, both on Rise Above Records. The albums were reissued on Metal Blade. BLOOD CEREMONY spent the latter part of 2009 touring throughout Europe with ELECTRIC WIZARD. During the latter part of 2011 and the early part of 2012, they supported GHOST on their European and North American tours. BLOOD CEREMONYs style has been described as "flute-tinged witch rock" and their lyrics are filled with black magic imagery and references to classic horror films. The band is fronted by singer/flutist/organist Alia O'Brien, whose flute solos are reminiscent of JETHRO TULLs Ian Anderson. The band was created by O'Brien with guitarist Sean Kennedy, who is responsible for most of the songwriting.

Following the success of last years globally acclaimed third album "The Eldritch Dark", BLOOD CEREMONY released a single "Let It Come Down". Released and recorded to coincide their European tour (with SPIDERS) in May (2014), "Let it Come Down" further displays the uniqueness of this Toronto based band. Conviction and dedication to what they do is so evident here, whilst the songwriting is sounding more confident than ever. Backed with a cover version of Loving You, originally recorded by early 70s obscure Scottish proto-metal legends, IRON CLAW, BLOOD CEREMONY are rapidly becoming legends themselves. Thier latest album release "Lord of Misrule" will be review later on as soon the Vinyl hits my door step.

Dopethrone - Hochelaga

Monday, new week, time to introduce this week's "Record Of The Week"

"Hochelaga" is the fourth full length, from the heaviest D.I.Y. Canadian trio DOPETHRONE. The band formed 2008 in Hochelaga, Montreal’s trashiest Ghetto.

"Hochelaga" is the bands biggest and best album to date. It's a pure trip to the wasteland where only black mushrooms grows. The album is dipped in a smoke machine and smells a hint of burnt wood. They encompass the bleakness of black metal, the steadfastness of New Orleans-style sludge, and a heavier-than-thou doom mentality. The riffs are thick, punishing, suffocating and destructive. The Demonic vocals are harsh, visceral and animal-like. And the mood is heavy and oppresive.

"Hochelaga" is a 7 massive, worshipping, sludgy tune album, with allot of filthy, elegant and smoke infused riffs that looses up any lying corpse around. DOPETHRONE have a really heavy doomish sound, nothing new but the way they do it is quite staggering. The lyrics is filled with occultism, demons, drugs and drinking. In other words, everything that you should not do.
