The Black Keys - Delta Kream

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

Sun is shining, the spring is finally here for real. So it was more than welcome to get some Blues-Roots with the American rock duo THE BLACK KEYS and their new album "Delta Kream".

"Delta Kream" is the tenth album, released through Easy Eye Sound and Nonesuch Records on May 14, 2021. "Delta Kream" is a cover album with their own rendition of the Mississippi artists who inspired them over the years. So this is an album full of hill country blues songs. Here you get some covers of songs by Kimbrough, Burnside, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and others. Each of its 11 tunes sounds like it's really handpicked from their stash of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney’s favorite tunes, with some nice company of the slide guitarist Kenny Brown, who is known to be playing on some of Kimbrough’s finest albums and the bassist Eric Deaton, a former sideman to R. L. Burnside.

The album opens up with the first single, a cover of "Crawling Kingsnake", a version of Big Joe Williams and John Lee Hooker, where they do an excellent rendition. "Mellow Peaches" is another nice one of Big Joe Williams's creations. Dirty hilly billy blues in the best possible way. Junior Kimbrough is the one who was the inspiration to all this started and his tunes are the most played in their own versions, like the tunes "Stay All Night" that turns out to be more lay back than Junior Kimbrough even if the soundscape is way bigger. The same goes with "Do The Romp", "Sad Days, Lonely Nights", "Walk With Me" and the very soulful and sensitive version of "Come And Go With Me". R. L. Burnside's tunes "Poor Boy A Long Way From Home" have a great stomp, while he sings with a light voice on "Going Down South". Mississippi Fred McDowell's tune "Louise" gets a sleek caress and the old Ranie Burnette's blues classic "Coal Black Mattie" with the marvelous lyrics gets a really dirty rendition. "Delta Kream" is an excellent blues honor record, even if this might feel like a collection of single b-sides and bonus tunes for many KEYS fans. But I do like what I hear and during these spring days it works brilliantly and I'm almost sure this will be played a lot in the upcoming months.

The Black Keys - Crawling Kingsnake

On May 14, THE BLACK KEYS releases their tenth studio album, "Delta Kream", via Nonesuch Records. The record celebrates the band’s roots, featuring eleven Mississippi hill country blues standards that they have loved since they were teenagers, before they were a band, including songs by R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, among others.

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney recorded "Delta Kream" at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville; they were joined by musicians Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton, long-time members of the bands of blues legends including R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. The album takes its name from William Eggleston’s iconic Mississippi photograph that is on its cover.

Today's tune "Crawling Kingsnake" is a blues song that has been recorded by numerous blues and other artists. It is believed to have originated as a Delta blues in the 1920s and be related to earlier songs, such as "Black Snake Blues" by Victoria Spivey and "Black Snake Moan" by Blind Lemon Jefferson.

As "Crawling King Snake", it was first recorded by Big Joe Williams on March 27, 1941. The song is a country-style blues, with Williams on vocal and nine-string guitar and William Mitchell providing imitation bass accompaniment. On June 3, 1941, Delta bluesman Tony Hollins recorded "a markedly different version", which served as the basis for many subsequent versions.

John Lee Hooker began performing "Crawling King Snake" early in his career and included it in his sets after arriving in Detroit, Michigan in the early 1940s. In an interview, Hooker explained that he adapted Tony Hollins' song: "I got that 'Crawling King Snake' from him". Hooker first recorded the song in Detroit on February 18, 1949 for producer Bernard Besman. When it was released by Los Angeles-based Modern Records, "Crawling King Snake" became one of Hooker's most successful singles, reaching number six on the Billboard R&B chart in 1949. Hooker recorded several subsequent versions of the song, including one with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards for Hooker's 1991 album Mr. Lucky.

The video for “Crawling Kingsnake” was directed by Tim Hardiman and filmed at Jimmy Duck Holmes’ Blue Front Café, which is the oldest active juke joint in America.

Dan Auerbach says: “We were honored to play alongside Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton, who are a direct link to R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. This is the Mississippi hill country sound that Pat and I first bonded over.”

Blue Stones - Black Holes

Windsor, Ontario based Blues Rock duo BLUE STONES show that two dudes really is enough to create some killer stuff, check this up!

Not having a third member to fill another rhythm role, the duo developed an original characteristic to the sounds of the bands that influenced them, such as KINGS OF LEON, MY MORNING JACKET, MUTEMATH and THE BLACK KEYS.

“We never had a bass player in our early jams, so we subconsciously compensated for one in the music,” says guitarist/vocalist Tarek Jafar.

Apparently it’s worked, the group has reached top-level sales on the popular Bandcamp.com as well as garnering over one million spins on Spotify. The duo’s music has also been featured numerous times on major network television shows such as Suits, Parks and Rec and Monday Night Football .

Since the bands formation in 2011, the Wisconsin Duo has been receiving an unreal amount of attention. Their brand of brash un-tethered alt. blues rock mixed with Metal, country and punk blends into a sometimes comedic monster that cannot be easily pinned down, and at times seems so over the top it cant be serious.

DeWolff - Sugar Moon

DEWOLFF is a three-headed rock ’n roll monster from the Netherlands’ Deep South: it’s a fire-breathing love child of the great Rock bands from the 1970’s and psychedelic cosmic radiation from the future. DEWOLFF was formed in 2007 by singer/guitarist Pablo van de Poel, brother/drummer Luka van de Poel and Hammond organist Robin Piso, and has grown to be one of the greatest live acts around. Kaleo - A/B

Monday, new week, time to present "Record Of The Week"

A/B is the second studio album by Icelandic rock band KALEO. It was released on June 10, 2016.

KALEO hail from Mosfellsbær, Iceland, nothing that will come up in mind when A/B is spinning on the turntable as both the sound and vocal is as american it could be. The music is like overheated garage blues with fine-tuned capochilla-soul vocals.

KALEO was formed in 2012. The band consists of Jökull Júlíusson (vocals and guitar), Davíð Antonsson (percussion and vocals), Daníel Ægir Kristjánsson (bass guitar), and Rubin Pollock (guitar and vocals). KALEO has released two studio albums, KALEO (2013) and A/B (2016), as well as an EP, Glasshouse (2013).

The album "A/B" kicks of with a meaty Blues stomper "No Good", a tune which appears on the soundtrack to HBO's Vinyl. "Way Down We Go" is a half tempo master piece where JJ Whiskey soar vocals will trip anyone on her knees, thick and sensitive. "Broken Bones" is the albums Delta Blues tune where "The devil's going to make me a free man", excellent indeed! The album really have a broad mix from the Blues to Country like the tune "Automobile" or the folkish "All the Pretty Girls" and up tempo rockers like "Glass House" and "Hot Blood". Or the iced folklore "Vor I Vaglaskogi" where JJ sings in his native language, a tune that makes a real impact, grandiose and sentimental. The album closes with two softer tunes, the honest "Save Yourself" and hauntingly beautiful "I Can't Go On Without You".

The influences are THE BLACK KEYS, THE LUMINEERS, ROBERT JOHNSON and BON IVER.

Sum: An album that mixes virginity and soulfulness of blues rock with elements of folk and country.

Bombino - Azamane Tiliade

BOMBINO (Omara Moctar) is an internationally acclaimed Tuareg guitarist and singer-songwriter from Agadez, Niger. His music frequently addresses Tuareg geopolitical concerns and is sung in the Tuareg language of Tamasheq. BOMBINO is the subject of the documentary film Agadez, the Music and the Rebellion.

He plays some dusty electrical desert blues, really ragged and feverishly modal. The tunes are poetic, melancholic and acrobatic. Odd but damm so good.

The success of "Agadez" attracted many musical stars to BOMBINO including Dan Auerbach of THE BLACK KEYS. In June 2012, Auerbach began producing BOMBINOs second international solo album titled "Nomad". "Nomad" was released by Nonesuch Records on April 2, 2013. BOMBINO began a concert tour of the United States in May 2013. The tour includes appearances at major music festivals, including Bonnaroo and The Newport Folk Festival. In 2013, BOMBINO was also invited to open for Robert Plant, Amadou & Mariam and Gogol Bordello.

On April 1, 2016 Bombino released "Azel", looking forward to dig into this as soon as the Vinyl drops in.

Turnaround - Black Soul Woman

TURNAROUND is a power trio from Kyiv, Ukraine. The band plays "Rock Blues" inspired by such giants of rock music as LED ZEPPELIN, JIMI HENDRIX, CREAM, TEN YEARS AFTER, PINK FLOYD and modern bands such as RACONTEURS, THE BLACK KEYS. They are often called Ukrainian ZEPPELIN for their resemblance with LED ZEPPELIN.

They are combining blues rock, psychedelic, classic rock, progressive rock, stoner and garage rock, bits and pieces from all to create their own unique style, which they manage pretty good. They have a great atmosphere of the classic touch.

The band had released their first album in 2012 and only after 2 years they finished the second one "Black Soul Woman". It consists of 8 songs (LP) and 1 bonus track (acoustic song available on CD only). The Vinyl is released as strictly ltd. colour vinyl, only 300 copies made. The recording took 15 months and they say it was worth doing that for so long.

The band consists of:

Max Tovstyi – Guitars, vocals, harmonica, keyboards, sometimes bass (on recordings), percussion etc.

He is a songwriter and composer of the band who writes all the lyrics and music. Before TURNAROUND, he played in various bands and music projects (The Red Sterns, The Blues Bricks, Rumbles etc.), played solo and even with The Chamber Orchestra where he wrote and arranged all the scores for all the musical instruments. Max started playing since 6 years old and he gave his first concert at the age of 7.

Pasha Mykhalenko – Drums, percussion.

Being one of the best drummers in Kyiv he was often called the second John Bonham because of his strong drum playing and creativity. He played his first solo on stage when he was 12 and now there is no TURNAROUND concert without a drum solo.

Valeriy Vitomskiy - bass, backing vocals.

He joined TURNAROUND in spring 2013, finding abherents in Max and Pasha of the same musical tastend.Valeriy is a talented musician, also a guitarist and singer. He gathered his first band and played concert at the age of 16.

"Weight of Love" is the latest departure by American rock duo THE BLACK KEYS eighth studio album "Turn Blue".

"Weight of Love" catchy blues rock with tender vocal from Daniel Auerbach.

The Black Keys are an American rock duo formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums). The duo began as an independent act, recording music in basements and self-producing their records, before they eventually emerged as one of the most popular garage rock artists during a second wave of the genre's revival in the 2010s. The band's raw blues rock sound draws heavily from Auerbach's blues influences, including Junior Kimbrough, Howlin' Wolf, and Robert Johnson.

Todays tune "Weight of Love" is taken from THE BLACK KEYS latest album "Turn Blue". The tune is a slow-burning album opener that, at almost seven minutes, clocks in as the record’s longest song. The video itself begins with a short snippet of "Fever" then follows a cult of women led by supermodel Lara Stone; the religious imagery and idyllic landscapes aren't too of a piece with the song's lyrics, but they do echo the track's soulful overtones.

Another DUO act is the Americans "The Black Keys" formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums). The duo began as an independent act, recording music in basements and self-producing their records, before they eventually emerged as one of the most popular garage rock artists during a second wave of the genre's revival in the 2010s. The band's raw blues rock sound draws heavily from Auerbach's blues influences, including Junior Kimbrough, Howlin' Wolf, and Robert Johnson. Since 2002 they have released 8 studio albums, with 2014 Turn Blue being their latest.

Just as a note:

In 2010 they have hired touring musicians for their live performances. So in the live sense they are no longer a pure rock & roll power duo. But they did have a good run in the rock & roll tag team division.

Just like The White Stripes the band has their roots in the blues, but the Keys take is more traditional and straight ahead sound.

Todays tune "Howlin' for You" is a song by The Black Keys from the band's sixth album, Brothers.

"Howlin' for You" is featured on the soundtrack of the EA Sports video games, NHL 11. and NHL Slapshot. The song is featured in the films and in TV commercials for The Dilemma, Limitless, The Guilt Trip (film), Moneyball and Dark Shadows. It is used as the theme song to the Australian police drama television series, Cops L.A.C., and has been featured in American television series, CSI: Miami, Detroit 1-8-7, Entourage, Once Upon a Time, Prime Suspect, Chuck, Necessary Roughness, Suits, Secret Diary of a Call Girl and The Chicago Code. MLB's Toronto Blue Jays use it as their home run song (except for Jose Bautista), and the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes use it as their goal song. The song was also featured in video game NBA 2K14.

The song was used in a feature on Sky Sports coverage of the 2014 Canadian Grand Prix.

An official video was released for the song. The music video—a parody of a sexploitation film trailer—was directed by Chris Marrs Piliero, starring Tricia Helfer, Diora Baird, Sean Patrick Flanery, Christian Serratos, Corbin Bernsen, Todd Bridges, and Shaun White, as well as Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of the band in the role of "Las Teclas de Negro" (Spanish for "The Black Keys").

A Behind-the-Scenes interview with Piliero, filmed during production of the video, has tongue-in-cheek commentary and brief clips of the cast members describing their characters.

The video was one of five nominees for the 2011 MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video.

Seasick Steve - Down On The Farm

Steven Gene Wold (born 1941), commonly known as Seasick Steve, is an American blues musician. He plays (mostly personalized) guitars, and sings, usually about his early life doing casual work. On February 28, 2013, Seasick Steve unveiled his upcoming album entitled Hubcap Music, and stated it would feature collaborations with John Paul Jones, Jack White and Luther Dickinson.

Hubcap Music is the sixth studio album by Seasick Steve. The title derives from his Morris Minor guitar made out of two hubcaps put back-to-back. He frequently uses it both live and in studio. One week before the release, a video for "Purple Shadows" premiered, consisting of Steve playing a stripped version of the song on the acoustic guitar.

Guests on the album include Dan Magnusson on drums, who also plays live with Seasick Steve, John Paul Jones on bass amongst other instruments and also Jack White on guitar on the track "The Way I Do".

Todays tune "Down On The Farm" was debuted live at the 2012 Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands. There was also a music video released for it, with Seasick Steve dancing behind his farm with the hubcap guitar in his hand, in similar fashion to The Black Keys' song, "Lonely Boy".

Two people are rarely able to sound as brutal as The Black Keys do. But then again, two people are rarely like Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney: loud, a little imbalanced and overdosed on blues, glam and soul. The Black Keys have, with great negligence, muscled their beast into all the dark corners of this world, and it is therefore only fitting that they are on their way to becoming a staple of personal music libraries everywhere.

After playing "Lonely Boy" apart and together for almost a year, it is all too obvious that the little secret you wished be your own is blown. But why acidic when it is close enough that the duo from Akron, Ohio actually enters the stage in Slottsskogen, Gothenburg. Way Out West looks after his own interests and the best is only good enough for the best. Follow?

The Black Keys is an American rock duo formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums). The group began as an independent act founded after the duo dropped out of college, and they eventually emerged among a second wave of popular garage rock revival artists from the 2000s.

After signing with indie label Alive, the group released its debut album, The Big Come Up (2002), which was recorded in Carney's basement and forged their raw blues rock sound. Over the next decade, the Black Keys built an underground fanbase through near-constant touring of small clubs, frequent album releases and music festival appearances, and extensive licensing of their songs. Their third album, Rubber Factory (2004), received critical acclaim and boosted the band's profile, eventually leading to a record deal with major label Nonesuch Records in 2006. After self-producing and recording their first four records in makeshift studios, the duo completed Attack & Release (2008) in a professional studio and hired producer Danger Mouse, a frequent collaborator with band. The group's commercial breakthrough came in 2010 with Brothers, which along with its popular single "Tighten Up", won three Grammy Awards. Their 2011 follow-up El Camino received strong reviews and peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, leading to the first arena concert tour of the band's career.
