Alastor - Onwards And Downwards

Monday, time to present last "Record Of The Week" for this season, yes it will back for the next season in August! A little summer holiday.

Swedish doom rockers ALASTOR are back and have hunkered down to summon the 7-tune spooky doomish gospel "Onwards And Downwards" is about (in the words of guitarist Hampus Sandell) “…one person’s gradual slip into insanity. An ongoing nightmare without end. It also sums up the state of the world around us as this year has clearly shown.”

ALASTOR is a four piece band from the southern parts of Sweden who plays psychedelic spooky doom with a focus on heavy riffs on high volume. They combine their love for slow music, grindhouse horror, doom and the occult to invoke a feeling of trance and fear in their listeners. The quartet released its epic 3-song debut album "Black Magic" in early 2017 via Twin Earth Records, followed by the 2-track “Blood On Satan’s Claw” EP on Halloween the same year that also included the excellent cover "Bad Moon Rising", by CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. Joining forces with RidingEasy Records in 2018 and released "Slave To The Grave", read about it here!

"Onwards And Downwards" contains seven spooky tunes with a run time of 46 minutes of old-school heavy rock, with a mix between doom metal and psychedelic hard rock. The tunes ozes with occult moods and distorted spookyness along with syrup heavy riffs, engaging melodies, and psychedelic vibes along with great vocals that woven in brilliant to the doomish ocean. The tunes are well written with great hooks and alot of catchy moments that makes this three-quarters a well spent time.

From the opening "The Killer In My Skull" the thick, slightly manic but incredibly well played and performed makes you almost drown in the sluggish liquid batter. Smiling as I gasp for breath when "Dead Things In Jars" creeps in, the distorted sounds makes you almost lose your balance. Almost twenty minutes have passed when it's time for really heavy drums at a slightly faster pace than we are used to when it comes to ALASTOR. This blasting rockers is a real threat on the album that includes a really cool bass groove and piano inlay. Back to the heavy and slower tempo in "Nightmare Trip", an excellent fuzzy piece from the band. "Pipsvängen" is an instrumenta acoustic beautiful piece which gives some respite before it's time for the last two toffees of the almost ten minute title track, a spooky graveyard thingie with some very melodic melody that is really haunting. It also have a great guitar interlude in the end. The ending piece "Lost And Never Found" is another heavy thick piece that closes up with the flag on the top. The album is well produced and sounds really good and organic. This is ALASTORs most accessible album yet and i'm really happy to hear some new tunes from these fellows and I do enjoy this album and highly recommend to get a copy wile you can! Release in May 28th, 2021 via RidingEasy Records

Dunbarrow - Lucifer's Child

Upon a hill in withered stone

A weathered keep stands dark and cold
In dunbarrow, where evil nests,
Accursed soil will lend no rest.

Summoned to play it the old way in a new age, Trondheim, Norway quintet DUNBARROW draws inspiration from freezing winter nights, unpolished demo tapes from the 70’s and the Swedish throwback rock from the beginning of the 21st century. The result is Norwegian proto-doom with a back-to-basics sound, from PENTAGRAM and WITCHFINDER to QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE.

The band has been playing together for over 8 years through different band names and genres. In 2014, vocalist Espen Andersen joined the band upon the departure of original singer/bassist Richard Chappell. Sondre Berge went from playing drums to playing bass. Kenneth Lønning and Eirik Øvregård are still on the guitars, with Pål Gunnar Dale taking over the drums permanently in 2016. Espen Andersen recorded and mixed the debut album at Stoy Studios. And on the upcoming album "Dunbarrow II" they wanted to further perfect their sound, the group teamed up with one of the most prominent producers in Norway, Christer Cederberg (ANATHEMA, TRISTANIA) for the first few days in order to get the sound just right. Then, Espen did the rest. The result is as eponymous and definitive as its title.

"Dunbarrow II" will be available on LP, CD and download on RidingEasy Records on September 14th, 2018.

Today's tune "Lucifer's Child" taken from the bands debut album, enjoy!

Electric Citizen - Misery Keeper

ELECTRIC CITIZEN are based in Cincinnati and signed to California based heavyweight, RidingEasy Records, ELECTRIC CITIZEN has spent the last several years touring the world headlining and opening for acts like KING DIAMOND, PENTAGRAM, THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN, FU MANCHU, BUDOS BAND, CHARLES BRADLEY, JOAN JETT, WOLFMOTHER and playing renowned festivals like Psycho Las Vegas, Psycho California and Desert Fest Belgium.

. 📷 by Steven Levas

After bursting to the American heavy rock forefront with their 2014 debut album, Sateen, Electric Citizen released their second album, Higher Time in 2016; a breakout moment for the band as a whole and for vocalist Laura Dolan. Like its predecessor, Higher Time was recorded at The Diamonds studio in Cincinnati by Brian Olive (The Greenhornes, Dan Auerbach, Dr. John, etc.), and in search of an even more expansive feel, Laura, Ross and Brian traveled to mix alongside Black Keys engineer Collin Dupuis at Easy Eye in Nashville, TN.

ELECTRIC CITIZEN branch out with stage-born assurance across a collection of definitive rock ‘n’ roll. It is a bold, complete sound that sacrifices nothing of the band’s on-stage energy and clearly demonstrates that while their progression has been quick, it’s been hard won the traditional way: They worked their collective ass off. ELECTRIC CITIZEN brazenly refuse to be pigeonholed and craft a style that, like every stage they step onto, is completely their own. Look for them on the road in North America and Europe throughout 2018 and beyond.

Today's tune "Misery Keeper" taken from the bands latest release "Higher Time", enjoy!

Monolord - Rust

Monday, New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

The Swedish sludge/doom trio MONOLORD serves a brand new and third album release "Rust", where they invites you to a spooky trip into their world of heavy, slow atmospheric riffs with hazy minimalistic and strip down vocals. It's an shaken album not stirred.

This 6 track mammoth album starts with "Where Death Meets The Sea", monotone Sabbathian riffs that flows like a slow stream and forms this heavy dirty piece to something great and shiny. Heavy is just the first name of this gents, emotional should be their second. As in the second tune "Dear Lucifer" all is kept slow in pace and mood, touching atmosphere. "I stab your back and run true the night" is part of the lyrics on the title track and today's tune "Rust", catchy piece with heavy and melodic riffs. With slow and emotional feeling makes you as a listener weak, specially on violin parts in "Wormland" that sneaks in so beautifully between the heavy riffs. "Forgotten Lands" the almost 13 minutes epic with an killing bass line in the middle of the tune that lifts this tune up a notch higher until a magical vocal chants start, masterpiece! The end track is the angry "At Niceae", it almost sounds like it's running out of fuel, but still it forces true the barriers that is in front of MONOLORDs path until a lonely and single line guitar part takes the center place on the stage in a splendid way. This album was recorded by Monolord, mixed and mastered by Esben Willems (Berserk Audio).

Thomas V Jäger - Electric and acoustic guitars, vocals and cowbell
Esben Willems - Drums and percussion
Mika Häkki - Bass and ambience

Sum: The bands third triumph is here, do not miss this!

Today's tune "Rust" is the title track from the "Record Of the Week", it was released September 29th via RidingEasy Records.

Salem's Pot - Pronounce This!

Monday, new week, time to scare up the "Monday Thrill", let me present the "Record Of The Week"

The horror-obsessed Swedish doom rockers SALEM'S POT have returned with a brand new album release "Pronounce This!", an album that receive the great trophy "Record Of The Week". SALEM'S POT walks the same path as GHOST, keep the mysterious and never identifies its band members individually, completely anonymous.

"Pronounce This!" is the second release by the mysterious quintet, an album that spawns between the classic 20's movie "Nosferatu" and the twisted "Kiss of the Damned". The music is very hallucinogenic and should be played a dark evening with a few candles and the full moon lightning up the room. You will instantly feel the horror around the corner, the sense of true evil lurking outside the window when the dark hazy tones flows out from the speakers like heavy thick smoke. It's very melodic, doomy and oozy. The Vocals partly reminds of Magnus Pelander (WITCHCRAFT) way of singing, sometimes like Pelle Almqvist (THE HIVES), well more like a mix between them and the music is something like IN SOLITUDE and HAWKWIND with spice of horror. It's a bit weird and wild, amazing in my ears, you can feel that it's bleed classic horror movies in the songwriting. It's boogie blues with free-form psychedelia that touches the classic NWOBHM, catchy melodies that hooks you. Key tracks are the almost 13 minutes long killer tune "Coal Mind", the album opener "Tranny Takes A Trip" a fuzzy and trippy piece and totally odd country track "So Gone, So Dead" and album closer "Desire". "Pronounce This!" is SALEM'S POT breakthrough, nuff said.

Pronounce This! is available on LP, CD and download, released on July 22nd via RidingEasy Records.

Sum: Over 50 minutes of heavy spooky rock n roll to steal your soul.

Today's tune "Tranny Takes A Trip", the album opener, enjoy!

The Picturebooks - E.L.I.Z.A.B.E.T.H.

THE PICTUREBOOKS create a sound that is thick with sweat and desert dust. The guitars are fat and covered in a layer of grime whilst the drums hammer with a Bonham like intensity. The music is dark, sombre yet somehow uplifting as they pepper the swampy riffs and thundering, simplistic drumming with choruses that resonate and offer the listener the chance to sing along.

THE PICTUREBOOKS are a German alternative rock/blues rock duo (Fynn Claus Grabke and Philipp Mirtschink) who formed after meeting a skate park. The band released the albums "Artificial Tears" and a "List of People To Kill" independently in Europe before signing to RidingEasy Records in 2014. "Imaginary Horse" was recorded in the same garage where they regularly refurbish and repair motorcycles and choppers.

Today's tune "E.L.I.Z.A.B.E.T.H." is taken from the band's album "Imaginary Horse". The video is filmed and edited by: Claus Grabke, Actress: Zilah Drawn. The video was filmed on location at Paul revere school Los Angeles, Silverado, Costa mesa

Shooting Guns - BarnBurner

SHOOTING GUNS are hard at work fortifying the heavy end of the psychedelic spectrum. Hailing from the subarctic wasteland of Saskatoon, SK, they haunt the foggy moor between Sabbath-styled doom riffery and heavy pulse-riding kraut-rock.

The band scored the soundtrack to Canadian horror-comedy "WolfCop" and released the Official Soundtrack in 2014 in partnership with One Way Static, RidingEasy Records, and Cinecoup. Locked in their studio during a -50 cold spell during one of Canada’s harshest winters on record, SHOOTING GUNS gave themselves a crash course in composition and enlisted the talents of Toby Bond to create a cinematic score locked to every second of this action packed party movie. Not only is this the loudest album that the band has released yet, it's their first movie score soundtrack, first concept album, and it features more guitar solos than all their previous work combined.

Their sophomore LP, Brotherhood of the Ram, (Record Of The Week - December 2013) released in 2013 through RidingEasy Records was nominated for the 2015 JUNO Metal/Hard Album of the Year as well as the Polaris Music Prize. Their debut LP, Born To Deal in Magic: 1952-1976, was also nominated for the Polaris Music Prize in 2012.

SHOOTING GUNS provide the perfect soundtrack for the morning after the apocalypse, when you are sitting in the rubble of your home in a bathrobe and think, 'What should I do now?' and end up zoning out for hours in a psychedelic trance instead of making a survival plan. Bad move on your part, because you are probably going to die.

The VINYL version of "WolfCop" was released in different pressings. The first press came out as RED & BLUE MARBLED VINYL. Limited to #1000 copies worldwide. Vinyl packaged in a deluxe gatefold old school tip-on jacket with original artworks by RANDY ORTIZ (Marvel Comics, Mondo,…) The Second press was pressed in a AMETHYST COLOR VINYL + BONUS 7" Limited to #450 copies worldwide. Vinyl packaged in a deluxe gatefold old school tip-on jacket with original artworks by RANDY ORTIZ (Marvel Comics, Mondo,…) Also included is a FREE DIGITAL DOWNLOAD CARD and a BONUS 7" containing 3 promo tracks by Shooting Guns. This bonus 7" comes on white or black vinyl (randomly inserted)

Today's tune is "" is taken from "WolfCop" soundtrack. The Video is pretty cool, check it out.

Recorded by Shooting Guns at Pre-Rock Studios (Saskatoon, SK), mixed by SJ Kardash at Full Color Studios (Saskatoon, SK), and mastered by John McBain (San Francisco, CA). Cover art by Randy Ortiz.
