Then it was Monday again, this means that it is time to present "Record Of The Week".

"Vertigo" is the fourth album by the Finnish 🇫🇮 occult rock band JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES.

A band that has been around since 2010 where the psychedelic rock and tentative progressive rock have been their trade mark over the years.

Across eight tracks, "Vertigo" provide us with 40 minutes of occult rock where they capture that late 60s/early 70s heavy psych blues sound that they do best. Not as dark as the black and white tornado cover gives itself a gleam of. The white is more creamy white with a few drops of yellow, red and green. The album have some horror film samples added to the ominously retro vibe. The sound is fresh and cripsy in it's own oldieness. The musicanship is very tight and well played. The tunes are well-written and very moreish full of character and charisma. Great guitar playing by Thomas Corpse. Jess’s vocals are very powerful and soulful infectious which lifts the whole ship with its presence. The organs from Abraham are dominated and works just perfect to give the sound the extra dynamic soundscape. The rythm section is very powerful made of the bass player Fast Jake and drummer and percussion by Yussuf.

From the opening Hitchcock horror intro in "Burning Of The Velvet Fires", a groovy piece, with wonderful organ playing and excellent vocals give us a helluva start of this record. "World Paranormal" is another great tune where the mind fly away back to the heyday of the JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, popish attitude with a very catchy chours and almost danceable rythms. "Talking Board" is a spooky piece with a darker layout and a horrified powerful background laughter. The single "Love Zombi" is a very powerful piece with a very groovy melody and catchy vocal and killer organs. "Summer Tripping Man" is a 60's garage rocker that sounds a little like THE DOORS on crack. "Born To Kill" is flowing in a more heavier landscape while "What’s On Your Mind" takes another direction into the progressive and psychedelic world. The album closes up with "Strange Earth Illusion", a real beast that passes the eleven minute mark, heavy psychedelic blues where Jess progressive vocal style gives a real spark to this piece, excellent guitar-leds, marvelous bass runs and where drums and cymbals sit like a sledgehammer, just magic. "Vertigo" is a marvelous album with a great selection of tunes written by guitarist Thomas Corpse. "Vertigo" was released on 21 May 2021 by Svart Records.

Hexvessel - Kindred

Monday, new week and it's time to present "Record Of The Week".

"Kindred" is the 5th album by the British/Finish psychedelic forest folk-rockers HEXVESSEL. The album was released on April 17 on Svart Records. The band was formed by English/Irish singer/songwriter Mat McNerney in 2009 after he moved to Finland. Also known for his work with BEASTMILK (now known as GRAVE PLEASURES), THE DEATHTRIP, guest spots with CARPENTER BRUT and ME & THAT MAN and his earlier work with Norwegian Black Metal bands CODE & DØDHEIMSGARD, McNerney is a both highly eclectic and critically acclaimed musical artist. Across the years, it is McNerney’s work with HEXVESSEL which has been his most brave, exploratory, honest, and impossible to categorize, unique and idiosyncratic in a world all of their own.

The album was made in their original studio in Tampere, Finland, where they recorded their cult classic "No Holier Temple". It was mastered by John Davis (THE KILLERS / GORILLAZ / LED ZEPPELIN / LANA DEL REY) in the UK. Adorned by cover artwork by artists Thomas Hooper (who has worked for NEUROSIS, CONVERGE and DOOMRIDERS) and Richey Beckett (who has created work for METALLICA, FOO FIGHTERS, ROBERT PLANT)

"Kindred" is a nature-mystic opus that is taking a darker and more esoteric path, the album sees HEXVESSEL re-forge their eclectic melting cauldron or "Vessel" of sound into a potent "Hex" of spell-binding songcraft. Through "Kindred’s" 10 song rites of passage, folk roots with an occult undercurrent with a dark earthen balladry reminiscent of early NICK CAVE and the doom-laden atmospheres of DEAD CAN DANCE.

With magnificent and spooky guitars does the album opens up a delicious piece in "Billion Year Old Being", before the march takes its steps towards the unknown of progressive folkish psych-rock where the structures harken back to KING CRIMSON. Followed by the groovy 60's feel in "Demian" and a cover of COILs "Fire Of The Mind" live from a mental institution and delve into the Druidic sacrificial swamps with songs like "Bog Bodies", which conjures the deep Lynchian night with muted trumpet and foggy Rhodes piano. "Sic Luceat Lux" is an instrumental experimental piece that marks that we are halfway thru in its own way and opens up the doors for "Phaedra", a dark piece about decorating the heroin with blood, until it's time for a short interlude "Family" that opens up for "Kindred Moon", a heartfelt tune with a quirky melody of piano chords and strings. "Magical & Damned" is a spellbinding beauty with a warm and tender feeling and excellent vocals that follow up with the closing acoustic lullaby "Joy Of Sacrifice". "Kindred" is a well-cooked mix of psychedelic progressive rock and folk roots. It's an album that calls you on a journey, both intimate and richly enlightening. The album is filled up with a great deal of passion and spirit that makes it so easy to fall in love with.

Musta Risti - Moottoriritari

The Finish rockers MUSTA RISTI (Black Cross) latest album is a pre-apocalyptic and cosmic journey through a rocky and ruined world that echoes the sabbatical of old-fashioned rock and the metallic harshness of modern fuzzy rock. It sounds great, heavy old school riffing with a pleasant vocal, a band that reminds of some of the classic Swedish rockers like HORISONT and ABRAMIS BRAMA. All the tunes are in Finish and the lyrics of the album deals with hell and where the beast takes over the threat of apocalypse overpower and people.

TEKSTI-TV 666 is a Finnish top purveyor of shoegaze kraut punk founded in July 2013. Finland’s Some of the band's first songs were songs by singer-guitarist Tero Huotar, DEAD MONGOLOIDS, which have been re-directed and translated into Finnish. The language of the band's performance was English at the beginning, but the transition to the Finnish language was quick. The band has earned a reputation as a skilled live band.

Alunah - Fire of Thornborough Henge

ALUNAHs fourth album "Solennial", was released on 17th March 2017 via Svart Records. "Solennial" was recorded and mixed by Chris Fielding (CONAN) at Skyhammer Studios, England and mastered by Greg Chandler at Priory Recording Studios, England. The album features guest appearances by Charlotte ‘Chipper’ Nicholls (CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX, PORTISHEAD) and Rich Harris (OILY TOYS).

For 10 years Sophie, guitarist David Day, bassist Daniel Burchmore and drummer Jake Mason, since first coming together in the English Midlands in 2006, ALUNAH have trafficked in a blend of the earthly and the unearthly.

Over the course of their three albums – 2010’s "Call of Avernus", 2012’s "White Hoarhound" and 2014’s "Awakening The Forest" – the four-piece have been a constant force of progression into an individualized take on psychedelic and organic heft. Their material has never lacked structure or groove, but with the melodic vocals of guitarist Sophie Day ever at the fore, they keep an eye toward the ethereal as well.

That was never more true than on "Awakening the Forest", which was released by Napalm Records and followed by 2015 CD reissues of the first two albums via PRC Music and a vinyl release for "Call of Avernus" through UK imprint HeviSike Records, with one for "White Hoarhound" still to come in 2016. But even that ending was only a beginning.

Following in the footsteps of Svart alums HEXVESSEL and JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES, ALUNAH arrive at the label preceded by a reputation for blending nature worship and heavy vibes with a grace that few can match, basking in a sun-soaked spirit of beauty and decay, folklore and deeply personal expression. Look for them to expand their sonic palette with the new material and build on what they’ve accomplished before in their rich, engaging sound that seems to be always wandering and never, ever lost.

In November 2017 ALUNAH announced the addition of vocalist Siân Greenaway to their lineup, Greenaway joins ALUNAH after the stunning departure in September of founding vocalist/guitarist Sophie Day, who fronted the band across four full-length releases, the latest of which, Solennial, was issued earlier this year on Svart Records. In conjunction with Day’s leaving, ALUNAH vowed to press on, and with the arrival of Greenaway, they will look to tour in 2018 and begin writing material for their next album.

Jess and the Ancient Ones - The Horse and Other Weird Tales

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

Third time around for JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES (JATAO) on Tune Of The Day as "Record Of The Week", the female fronted finish occult retro rock band with their latest and third release "The Horse and Other Weird Tales", an album that was released last year on Svart Records on December 1st. Busy time when it arrived, all the focus was to sort out all the other releases, so it falled behind a little. Now it has got some air time, been spinning at work, at home, in the car mixed with other new records but I always returned to it and that is a very good sign.

On "The Horse and Other Weird Tales" they continue on the same highway as they painted on "Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes", but with a mystery trip to the psychedelic side of the sixties, with a more modern view point. The album is very groovy and organic and it's produced a very old fashioned album, 9 tunes and 31 minutes, recorded and mixed together with their live sound engineer.

Jess vocals is absolutely stunning, with high brilliance she dives into the mysterious depths, swirls one on her finger so you get absolutely mesmerize and disappear into the myst. The musical partners she have are amazing to capture the timezone and with a intelligence and accessibility with a lot of variety to keep it interest all the way.

From the opening chords to first sentences in the first tune "Death Is The Doors" the path for this record is set. Intro with a 60's horror movie theme and psychedelic keyboards aka THE DOORS slowly walks to the door and unlocks it and the tune swings to a quicker melody pattern by the rhythm section, catchy and amazing sining by Jess.
"Shining" is a groovy piece, keys is still strong here, catchy chorus and very colourful guitars makes it very hard to sit still.
A groovy bass line opens up the rocker "Your Exploding Heads", still with a 60's touch and a hell of a swing.
One of the albums longest tune, just over 7 minutes "You And Eyes", starts with a powerful soft vocals by Jess and it builds up as long the journey goes, psychedelic keys with smokey distorted guitars makes this a epic piece of music.
The albums shortest tune is up next "Radio Aquarius", ticks in under 2 minutes, radio propaganda with nice background music by the band.
"Return To Hallucinate" is a trippy piece with absolutly stunning vocals performance by Jess, with total control and incredible range she masters with fearless every inch of vocal space in the tune.
"(Here Comes) The Rainbow Mouth" with a great bassline, groovy melody, catchy guitars and of course Jess.
"Minotaure", Jess again, puh, I'm totally blown away here, 60's psychedelic rock with racing key riffs and a bass riff that kills, groovy like a beast.
The album ends with the longest paper back novel "Anyway The Minds Flow" have traces of everything on the album.

The tune references J.D. Salinger’s, "The Catcher In the Rye" and includes audio recordings of Mark Chapman, the man who murdered the late Beatles, John Lennon. Mark Chapman has gone on the record stating that "The Catcher in the Rye" inspired him to kill Lennon. Chapman believed Lennon to be a “phony”, with the song “Imagine” having the line about having no possessions while he himself was a wealthy man. This is a complex subject because John Lennon came from a very meager and humble background in a poor part of Liverpool, England, and as a self-made man he understood the fight to better oneself. “Anyway The Minds Flow” discusses the parallels between reality and what is assumed, and the fine line between the truth and misinterpretation.

The summery of this album: A excellent ride into the void of 60's psychedelic occult heavy rock.

Kingston Wall - I Feel Love

KINGSTON WALL was a psychedelic/progressive rock group from Helsinki, Finland, originally formed in 1987. Influenced by such artists as JIMI HENDRIX, LED ZEPPELIN and PINK FLOYD, the group combined eastern themes, mysticism and vivid psychedelia with acid-rock. The band consisted of Petri Walli (guitars, lead vocals), Jukka Jylli (bass, backing vocals) and Sami Kuoppamäki (drums, percussion). Walli took the most active role in the band. He formed the group, composed most of the songs and wrote all the lyrics. He was also KINGSTON WALLs producer and manager and ran the band's own Trinity record label.

During their active time, KINGSTON WALL never achieved mainstream popularity. All their albums were printed in limited amounts and released on Walli's own independent label, Trinity. It was only after the group had disbanded that their popularity slowly grew through word-of-mouth.

KINGSTON WALL was known for their energetic live performances. The band held their own Freak-Out Club three times in Helsinki. They started playing live from small local pubs but as their popularity grew they could sell out the biggest clubs in Helsinki.

Todays tune "I Feel Love" is a cover of the Donna Summer classic. Taken from the second studio album "II". The album was originally released under the band's own record label, Trinity, in February 1993. It was also licensed and released in Japan by Japanese Zero record label. Both of these prints have been sold-out in the 1990s and are considered somewhat collector's items. The Japanese print included English lyrics in the jewel case insert booklet as well as Japanese translations of the lyrics.

In 1998, Finnish record label Zen Garden (later SonyBMG Finland) re-released the whole KINGSTON WALL discography as remastered versions along with a 2-disc limited print-version of each album which included a Bonus CD featuring rare/unreleased studio and live material. These 2-disc versions have also been sold-out and are considered collectibles. The album is still available as a remastered 1-disc version from Zen Garden (2006).

A new 7" version will be released at Svart Records on July 12th.

Goatess - King One

A new week and it's time reveal this years first "Record Of The Week".

Today we stomp the ground with heavy feets and select a domestic band called "Goatess", the band was formed in early summer of 2009, but had been the project of Niklas and the Swedish cult doom metal vocalist Chritus Linderson (Count Raven, Saint Vitus, Terra Firma, Lord Vicar) for several years. Originally Weekend Beast, the band changed name to Goatess in August 2012 and the band today beside Niklas and Chritus consists of Kenta and Findus. Despite having no records out on the market band has already created a massive buzz and appeared on prestigious festivals such as Doom Shall Rise in Germany.

Goatess creates music that is based on the atmosphere and the worship of the heavy riff and they truly deliver the goods on their self titled album and are offering one of the finest doom metal album of the year 2013. (If i got my hands on this album earlier it would have been high on the Best Album List of 2013) Svart records knows who to sign and it's another good catch of the Finnish label.

You have no reasons to ignore this album if you're a fan of Chritus' old bands, be it Count Raven, Saint Vitus or his current other current project Lord Vicar (led by Kimi Kärki formerly of Reverend Bizarre). His vocals, a true representative of the classical age of traditional doom metal are as good as ever.

Jess and the Ancient Ones - Astral Sabbat

Although it’s been only nine months since the release of their brilliant and spellbinding debut album, Finland’s Jess and The Ancient Ones have already moved on. After a split 7" with Spain’s Deadmask last November on Doomentia, the band is already gearing up for something new. A three song EP titled Astral Sabbat is scheduled for release on Feb 22nd, and is expected to shatter most of the preconceptions some already did hold against the band.

Once again recorded with Swedish sonic wizard Tore Stjerna of Necromorbus Studio in their hometown Kuopio, ‘Astral Sabbat’ sees them pushing forward the boundaries of the sound established on their first full-length and forging their own path, as personified by the rather unusual choice of cover song: ‘Long And Lonesome Road’, originally written and recorded by Dutch rock outfit Shocking Blue, mostly known for their mega-hit ‘Venus’.

“We wanted to give these works a space entirely their own” reveals guitarist Thomas Corpse, “so that listeners are able to focus on them completely. For this purpose we consider an EP the perfect means. Regarding the surprising choice of cover, I had heard the song at a very young age. And now, after travelling many roads, it returned to me. It is a timeless song and I hope someone discovers Shocking Blue through us."

With its cover art designed by Adam Burke of Nightjar Graphics, its accompanying video (a first for the band) that will be released to the public on Wednesday 6th of February and its epic “More Than Living” that swallows the entire B side on the vinyl version, ‘Astral Sabbat’ will prove that Jess And The Ancient Ones are now way beyond all those occult, prog or retro-rock tags and playing a game on their own.

Preorder the Astral Sabbat mCD / mLP on Svart Records, Release date is set to Feb 22nd 2013.
