Cold Chisel - Cheap Wine

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Cheap Wine" is a 1980 single from Australian rock band COLD CHISEL. The second single from the album "East", the single was released in May, a month before the album. It reached number 8 on the Australian charts, the band's first top-ten single, and would eventually remain the band's second highest chart performance. It has been described as, "one of Don's finest commercial songs.

The song first appeared in live sets in April 1980, and was recorded in one or two takes with no demo. Author Walker said, "It's about someone who's on the skids, but still having a great time. I can relate to that - in the seven years Cold Chisel have been together, we've only had enough money to eat the last two and a half. If you get into that lifestyle and start to enjoy it, you tend to stay that way even when the money comes in."

Producer Opitz said, "Cheap Wine" was obviously written as a single, something to follow "Choirgirl". If you listen to it, it has many of the same structural elements - where the chorus falls, where the bridge falls, where the backing vocals come in. And that was no accident." Moss said that he may initially have thought the song was too commercial, but the chord progressions were enough to stop it from being too poppy.

Barnes (front) flanked by Walker and Moss, in the music video Composer Don Walker said the song was, "a cobbled together song. The two verses were from two different ideas and the chorus came in quite late, and a middle bit from somewhere else. From memory, this was bolted together on the day, in the frenzy of writing and the euphoria of the first few days at Paradise Studios recording East."

A promotional video was shot for the song, featuring Barnes walking around an apartment, getting dressed, and miming to the song. Shot by Peter Cox, it shows footage of a cockfight in one scene. It was filmed at Roger Langford's apartment in Elizabeth Bay on 10 and 11 April, where the cover for East had been shot. Barnes wore a shirt depicting a woman using cocaine, with the logo, "Coke - The Real Thing".

The B-side was Barnes' first solo song-writing credit, "Rising Sun". A rockabilly song, it was inspired by Barnes' then-girlfriend, Jane, travelling to Japan.

Enjoy today's tune!

Amyl And The Sniffers - Guided By Angels

Melbourne punk ’n’ roll crew AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS will release their second album, "Comfort To Me", on September 10, and are previewing the collection with aggressive aggro-punk single "Guided By Angels".

Written during lockdown, the quartet’s new album was influenced by and expanded on a heavier pool of references - old-school rock’n’roll (AC/DC, ROSE TATTOO, MOTÖRHEAD and Wendy O Williams), modern hardcore (WARTHOG and POWER TRIP) and the steady homeland heroes (COLOURED BALLS and COSMIC PSYCHOS).

Lyrically, the album was influenced by Taylor’s rap idols and countless garage bands. Seventeen songs were recorded in the "Comfort To Me" sessions and the top 13 made the cut. They were mixed long-distance by Nick Launay (Nick Cave, IDLES, YEAH YEAH YEAHS) and mastered by Bernie Grundman (Michael Jackson, Prince, Dr Dre).

Release date: 10th September 2021

Today's tune "Guided By Angels" where Amy Taylor sings "I've got plenty of energy, it's my currency", that is truly some she obtain, just check out the video.

AC/DC - Power Up

Monday, new week and it's time for "Record Of The Week".

Legendary rockers AC/DC is back with the band’s 17th studio album "Power Up". Released November 13th, 2020. The album title "Power Up" does not appear on the front cover, except as "PWR/UP" (stylised as "PWRϟUP") on the left and right amps.

AC/DC came roaring back after a period of tragedy and uncertainty. "Power Up" marks the return of vocalist Brian Johnson, drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Cliff Williams, all of whom left AC/DC before, during, or after the supporting tour for their previous album "Rock Or Bust" (2014). This is also the band's first album since the death of co-founder and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young in 2017 and it serves as a tribute to him, according to his brother Angus. As far as can read about this is looks like all the tunes on "Power Up" were co-written by Malcolm and Angus Young.

"Power Up" contains 12 tunes with a play time of 41 mins, it sounds excatlly as AC/DC, so you will not get disapointed at all. The tunes are very groovy, loud, dirty with excellent and typical Angus riffs. From the opening rocker "Realize" where the Australian groove rock seeps out of the speakers just as it always has, clever, but simple and very typical AC/DC riffs, choruses with big harmonies. The first and the lead single "Shot In The Dark" is a great pick as single that works for every radio station or in a car stereo during weekends. Brian Johnson’s snotty sandpaper vocals sounds better than ever. Tune like "Demon Fire", "Systems Down", "Money Shot" and "Code Red" are excellent riff partys. Groovy and hook heavy tunes like "Kick You When You’re Down" and "Witch’s Spell" are really fun tune to dig to. The these old fellows still sound as fresh as they do is a wonder. That they mange to keep up the craftmanship with an over all excellent quality is magical. Well done guys.

Sum: Essential album for classic hard rock fans!

As Angus tells it, "Power Up" is a tribute to his brother Malcolm, just like "Back In Black" was a tribute to Bon Scott.

Today's tune "Realize" is taken from "Power Up", enjoy!

AC/DC - Sin City

Sunday, last category to play off at the Twelfth Night, 5th of January.

1. A Band That Should Have Been Bigger:
2. Highfaluting:
3. Best Right Now:
4. Twin Guitars:
5. Best Textstrophe:
6. It Swings:
7. Afterparty:
8. Bonus:

Afterparty, a category where you want to hear a tune that works on an afterparty. Here my idea was to pick something that can work as a background, even if you chill with a beer, your legs shall be moving without your notice. So the tune have to be something everyone recon, more of a great classic. So I decided to pick "Killing In The Name" with RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE.

SAXON "Princess Of The Night" - Holm (Perfect)
KREATOR "World War Now"- M Öbrink (Heavy Stuff)
HCSS "My Sanctuary" - Hellan (HARDCORE SUPERSTAR on an afterparty, oh yeah)
TURBONEGRO "Part II: Well Hello" - P Öbrink (Turbo always work)
MUSTASCH "Liberta"- Eriksdotter (A tune that works well on an afterparty)
BLACK REAPER "Reapers From The Past" - Sandström (Great tune, but will this work?)
AC/DC "Sin City" - Chief Rebel (Excellent Choice)
No tune here, Jens has left the building - Jens
RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE "Killing In The Name" - Stones

Today's tune "Sin City" was picked by Chief Rebel, excellent choice for an Afterparty and a nice nod to Nicke, who was the original host for this event, but his sewer pipe broke down the day before and had to cancel it, but luckily our best friend Hellan waved his hand and saved the evening, well-done bro.

The Video is a clip from the movie features AC/DC live at the Pavillion De Paris on December 9, 1979, during the tour that would be singer Bon Scott's last. After almost ten minutes of glimpses at the backstage life, the real movie starts as the band is introduced playing live on stage. Although the band is still in their '70s minimalist era with few stage effects and pyrotechnics, the live performance is considered one of the best and most energetic of their career. The live concert is intercut with quasi-fictional interviews with the members of the band. The interviews took place in Reims, France, two days before the concert.

Cast:
Phil Rudd ... Himself (drummer) (as AC/DC)
Ronald Belford Scott ... Himself (lead singer) (as Bon Scott)
Cliff Williams ... Himself (bassist) (as AC/DC)
Angus Young ... Himself (lead guitarist) (as AC/DC)
Malcolm Young ... Himself (rhythm guitarist) (as AC/DC)

Enjoy!

Parcels - Lightenup

Day two of Popaganda contained an interesting line up of bands like LOVA, Linnea Henriksson, PALE WAVES, MWUANA, BIPOLAR SUNSHINE, Tove Styrke, PARCELS, METRONOMY, Jenny Wilson and Veronica Maggio.

PARCELS, the young disco-pop breakthrough band hailing from Australia and going to release their debut album. The first emerging band ever to collaborate with the legendary DAFT PUNK (Overnight single – summer 2017). PARCELS make immaculately polished MOR pop that would sound at home in the company of CHIC or 70s-era FLEETWOOD MAC.

PARCELS did a hell of a show at Popaganda, absolutely the best live performance that day at Erikdalsbadet, extremely hard to stand still during their set.

PARCELS composed of Louie Swain (keyboards), Patrick Hetherington (keyboards), Noah Hill (bass), Anatole "Toto" Serret (drums) and Jules Crommelin (guitar). The band formed in 2014 while at high school in Byron Bay, Australia, and are now based in Berlin, Germany.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Rattlesnake

The music of KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD [AUS] is as hard to describe as their name is to pronounce. Sometimes it sounds like a psychedelic gem you managed to dig out at your local record shop but their sonic universe also incorporates jazz, heavy metal, progressive rock, film music and folk. Like a materialization of a record collectors dream, this Melbourne band fearlessly guides the listener through some of the most obscure borderlands of music history. Always with an absolute love for the for the forgotten music and an intact faith in its transforming potential.

Just a few hours before 2017 came to a close KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD managed to make their album “Gimboot Soup” available on their Bandcamp and thus fulfilling the more than ambitious promise to release five (!) album in 2017 alone. If anyone was to pull of such a foolish venture it was King Gizz who released two album each year between 2013 and 2015. This seven-piece band is not only very productive, they are also known for their excellent live shows. In other words: prepare your minds for expansion because they will visit Slottsskogen this summer.

KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD will perform in Slottsskogen on Friday, August 10.

The band was formed in 2010 in Melbourne, Victoria. The band consists of Stu Mackenzie (vocals, guitar, keyboards, flute), Ambrose Kenny-Smith (vocals, harmonica, keyboards), Cook Craig (guitar, vocals), Joey Walker (guitar, vocals), Lucas Skinner (bass), Michael Cavanagh (drums, percussion), and Eric Moore (drums, percussion, management). They are known for their prolific recording output, as well as their energetic live performances. This is something I really looking forward to see.

Today's tune "Rattlesnake" is taken from the ninth studio album "Flying Microtonal Banana". It was released on 24 February 2017 on Flightless Records in Australia, ATO Records in the United States, and Heavenly Recordings in the United Kingdom. It is the first of five albums released in 2017, and subtitled "Explorations into Microtonal Tuning, Volume 1". The album is recorded in quarter-tone tuning, where an octave is divided into 24 (logarithmically) equal-distanced quarter tones.

The album earned the band a nomination for Best Group at the ARIA Music Awards of 2017.

Palace Of The King - Get Right With Your Maker

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

The Australian rockers PALACE OF THE KING have released their third full-length album, "Get Right With Your Maker".

Their style of music brings back some good old rock ‘n’ roll that has the bluesy feels of the 70s and with "Get Right With Your Maker" they have a broader palette than before and steps in many styles and decades and they are doing it with bravura.

"Get Right With Your Maker" is a 10 tune stomper of pure bluesy rock 'n roll that will sting you like a fishing hook already on the first slow notes in the opening track "I Am The Storm", it's 7 minutes of magic, where Tim's vocal is just stunning, the melody is catchy and moves so smoothly true and in the middle part the tune flows out that you almost get's lost in the storm of weather psychedelia that reminds of THE DOORS. "It’s Been A Long Time Coming" is a more an album opening choice than the previous tune, here you get a 80's party rocker like WINGER, RATT and CINDERELLA. "Sold Me Down the River" is a chunky piece, with a catchy lyrics. "A Dog With A Bone" is a groovy southern rock tune, funky guitars, and organs. "Said the Spider to the Bird" is a great piece of old-school BLACK CROWES with groovy keys. "Move Through The Fire" have a heavier sound with classic melody and catchy riffs. "The Serpent" has a great HENDRIX intro, groovy riffs, and excellent solo. "Horizon" is another groovy rocker with a really cool hook. "Fly Like An Evil" is a heavy piece, chunky riffing, nice flavor in the melody. "Back On My Feet Again" closes the album with a real supurb catchy rocker, heavy feel blended with bluesy guitars and melodies. Once again these guys show that they are real musical talents and that hard work really does pay off.

The album was released on March 23rd via Golden Robot Records.

Tim Henwood – Vocals/Guitar
Sean Johnston – Keys/Guitar
Travis Dragani – Drums
Anthony Licciardi – Bass

Sum: A great bluesy rock album that is worth checking out.

Drawing inspiration from a broad range of artists, from the revered godfathers of the riff, BLACK SABBATH, to the modern behemoths such as MASTODON, SLEEP and BARONESS, with a hint of the psychedelic space-rock characteristic of PINK FLOYD and HAWKWIND, HYPERGIANT are steadily carving out a sound of their own from the molten sludge of these combined influences.

Palace Of The King - Valles Marineris

Last year, the blues and psych-infused Aussie hard rockers sextet, PALACE OF THE KING, released their debut album "White Bird/Burn The Sky". It was a real feel-good record and got to be one of my favourite car album in the first part of 2016. Also notice that I never wrote about it as I thought I would have when I look back searching for information, really strange, but it is as it is.

The second record "Valles Marineris" was released July 15th and it blows me away once again. It's a record where blues rock is the main course. The influences shines LED ZEPPELIN and THE BLACK CROWES and is the "Record Of The Week"

"Valles Marineris" starts with the rowdy organ in "Let The Blood Run Free", an awesome song with it funkified gospel-ting that get's my cats to shake on. "Beyond The Valley" is an amazing Zep riffed funk blues tune with a great chorus that get you to sing along. In "Black Cloud" the 70's soul is mixed with bluesy guitar riffs and some beautiful vocals provided by Mahalia, daughter of Jimmy Barnes. The gritty bassline and the and rumbling drums is the base in the far-out tune "We Are The Vampires". "Empire Of The Sun" is a mighty piece, it's a freak-in beast with Zep flavour. "River Of Fire" tastes a bit like THE BEATLES, but heavier and more bluesy. The final track "Into The Black" closes the album in a brilliant way with it's fading piano. The album is very melodic and catchy with well thought riffs and great vocals. It's well composed and flows smoothly all the way through to the end.

Sum: "Valles Marineris" is a album you can't live without!

Today's tune "Beyond the Valley", enjoy and buy the album.
