Khemmis - Candlelight

Today it was suppose to be the annual hard rock evening, an event that always takes place on eve of Twelfth Night in our small community of like minded friends. But this year it got cancelled as many other things because of the pandemic.

Well it's a sad thing, maybe we can do something later on together when it's back to normal again.

As a pretty sentmental guy as I am I guess a lookback would be great on a day like this. A few years back, 2018 to be more precice. During this year the categories was made up with one single word only except for "Best Right Now".

2018 years line up of categories was:

1. Festival
2. Summer
3. Best Right Now
4. Nostalgia
5. Space
6. Death
7. Hefty

Where we pick a tune from the last category "Hefty".

A fellow friend off the Öbrink brothers choosed the 7-minute burner "Candlelight" with the denver based doom rock band KHEMMIS. An excellent tune with modern doom sound full of tasty fuzz-crunch, guttural growls, classic-metal with great roughness.

Read about the sevent pick here!

Today's tune "Candlelight", taken from the second album "Hunted", live at Psycho Las Vegas 2017 in Las Vegas, enjoy!

AC/DC - Sin City

Sunday, last category to play off at the Twelfth Night, 5th of January.

1. A Band That Should Have Been Bigger:
2. Highfaluting:
3. Best Right Now:
4. Twin Guitars:
5. Best Textstrophe:
6. It Swings:
7. Afterparty:
8. Bonus:

Afterparty, a category where you want to hear a tune that works on an afterparty. Here my idea was to pick something that can work as a background, even if you chill with a beer, your legs shall be moving without your notice. So the tune have to be something everyone recon, more of a great classic. So I decided to pick "Killing In The Name" with RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE.

SAXON "Princess Of The Night" - Holm (Perfect)
KREATOR "World War Now"- M Öbrink (Heavy Stuff)
HCSS "My Sanctuary" - Hellan (HARDCORE SUPERSTAR on an afterparty, oh yeah)
TURBONEGRO "Part II: Well Hello" - P Öbrink (Turbo always work)
MUSTASCH "Liberta"- Eriksdotter (A tune that works well on an afterparty)
BLACK REAPER "Reapers From The Past" - Sandström (Great tune, but will this work?)
AC/DC "Sin City" - Chief Rebel (Excellent Choice)
No tune here, Jens has left the building - Jens
RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE "Killing In The Name" - Stones

Today's tune "Sin City" was picked by Chief Rebel, excellent choice for an Afterparty and a nice nod to Nicke, who was the original host for this event, but his sewer pipe broke down the day before and had to cancel it, but luckily our best friend Hellan waved his hand and saved the evening, well-done bro.

The Video is a clip from the movie features AC/DC live at the Pavillion De Paris on December 9, 1979, during the tour that would be singer Bon Scott's last. After almost ten minutes of glimpses at the backstage life, the real movie starts as the band is introduced playing live on stage. Although the band is still in their '70s minimalist era with few stage effects and pyrotechnics, the live performance is considered one of the best and most energetic of their career. The live concert is intercut with quasi-fictional interviews with the members of the band. The interviews took place in Reims, France, two days before the concert.

Cast:
Phil Rudd ... Himself (drummer) (as AC/DC)
Ronald Belford Scott ... Himself (lead singer) (as Bon Scott)
Cliff Williams ... Himself (bassist) (as AC/DC)
Angus Young ... Himself (lead guitarist) (as AC/DC)
Malcolm Young ... Himself (rhythm guitarist) (as AC/DC)

Enjoy!

3. Best Right Now:
4. Twin Guitars:
5. Best Text Strophe:
6. It Swings:
7. After Party:
8. Bonus:

"It Swings", this one I like, to pick a tune that swings was pretty easy, a tune that make your boody move should be the trick, so my first choice was RIVAL SONS with the tune "Keep On Swinging", the tune was a success at the evening :)

Here is the line up for "It Swings"

SULPHUR AEON "Lungs Into Gills" - Sandström (Heavy piece)
DIRT FORGE "Stone" - Chief Rebel (Another new one from Chief, sounds great)

Warrel Dane - When We Pray

Category five, time to see what's got played during the "Hardrock Evening" that when off at the Twelfth Night, 5th of January.

1. A Band That Should Have Been Bigger:
2. Highfaluting:
3. Best Right Now:
4. Twin Guitars:
5. Best Text Strophe:
6. It Swings:
7. After Party:
8. Bonus:

"Best Text Strophe", hmz a pretty hard category to pick tunes from, what is the "Best Textstrophe", well I put some hard thinking into this one, should I go for something heartbreaking everyday life or something important, got a bunch of tunes, but the Lirba sign inside me could't decided so it ended up with the classic "Sympathy For The Devil" with the ROLLING STONES, but to not being to mossy in my choice I decided to pick a fresher version of the tune and took GUNS N´ ROSES, a band that have done a great comeback.

Here is the lineup for "Best Text Strophe".

GHOST "Pro Memoria" - Sandström (Good tune)
RAIDER "Urge To Kill" - Chief Rebel (Another new one from Chief, great lyrics.)
HELLYEAH "War In Me" - Holm (Heavy piece)
WARREL DANE "When We Pray" - M Öbrink (Excellent lyrics)
PARADISE LOST "I Am Nothing" - Hellan (Heavy cover and bluesy piece)
SIXX AM. "Life Is Beautiful" - Eriksdotter (Excellent tune with a heartbreaking lyrics)
LIK "Dr Duschanka" - P Öbrink (Funny story behind this, don't think I would like to meet this Dr (:)
STONE SOUR "Song#3" - Jens (Beautiful choice Jens)
GUNS N´ ROSES "Sympathy For The Devil" - Stones

With a lyric like:
"The world is ruled by fools and thieves
With a flair for power and a taste for greed"

It's pretty obvious to pick "When We Pray" with the heavy metal vocalist WARREL DANE,
excellent choice by M Öbrink. The tune is taken from the debut solo album "Praises to the War Machine", released on April 25, 2008. WARREL DANE was an American musician who was the lead singer for the metal bands SANCTUARY and NEVERMORE.

Visigoth - Warrior Queen

Category 4, time to see what's got played during the "Hardrock Evening" that when off at the Twelfth Night, 5th of January.

1. A Band That Should Have Been Bigger:
2. Highfaluting:
3. Best Right Now:
4. Twin Guitars:
5. Best Textstrophe:
6. It Swings:
7. Afterparty:
8. Bonus:

"Twin Guitars", a pretty fun category to pick tunes from, there are many great tunes that suit into this one, as my view on "Twin Guitars" is that two guitar players play the same line at the same time, correct?

My first idea was to pick something odd but classic, but after a few spins of a few great tunes my vote ended with a typical Twin Guitar tune, thinking of IRON MAIDENs "Hallowed Be Thy Name".

Here is the lineup for Category 4

CURRENTS "Forever Marked" - Eriksdotter (Intressting tune from a band that I think I heard once)
OVÁTE "Morgonstjerne" - Sandström (Nice one)
SHORES OF NULL "Tide Against Us" - Chief Rebel (Another new one from Chief, sounds great)
SLAYER "Cronics" - Holm (Heavy piece)
CANDLEMASS "At The Gallows End" - M Öbrink (More Swedish doom, cool choice)
VISIGOTH "Warrior Queen" - Hellan (Heavy metal)
CANDLEMASS "Flowers Of Deception" - P Öbrink (Another one, cool choice)
HELLOWEEN "Pumpkins United"- Jens (A classic Twin Guitar band)
IRON MAIDEN "Hallowed Be Thy Name"- Stones

For today we pick Hellans choice, "Twin Guitars" from the Salt Lake City metal band VISIGOTH and the tune "Warrior Queen" taken from "Conqueror's Oath", released 09 February 2018, enjoy!

Candlemass - The Omega Circle

Category 3: "Best Right Now" time to see what's got played during the "Hardrock Evening" that when off at the Twelfth Night, 5th of January.

1. A Band That Should Have Been Bigger:
2. Highfaluting:
3. Best Right Now:
4. Twin Guitars:
5. Best Textstrophe:
6. It Swings:
7. After Party:
8. Bonus:

"Best Right Now",  could be the best category to pick tunes to, here you get a chance to show off :) Or at least play something that you really like and would love to share with your pals. This category tends to be really sprawling, some find the most obscure tune, were others play their nr 1 of the year. Really fun category.  My choice for the evening was a pretty late call, got a tip from my friend Linus at Soundpollution Record store, this was in the middle of December and I got hooked right on the spot, even got lost in my search for something interesting to buy...haha. My tune for the evening was the Cologne, German-based Death Metal band CHAPEL OF DISEASE with the track "Void Of Words". A band that really plays the pants off anyone, great mixture of Progressive Death Metal, Rock 'n Roll, Blues and Metal, Check it up.

The others line up:

TRIBULATION "Nightbound" - Hellan (Perfect tune from the best album 2018)
THRON "Dead Souls" - Sandström (Massive tune, great choice)
CANDLEMASS "The Omega Circle" - Chief Rebel (Excellent CANDLEMASS tune)
BLOODBATH "Bloodicide"- Holm (Good Choice)
HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY "Fire Walk With Me"- M Öbrink (Wow, another superb tune)
PARADISE LOST "Small Town Boy" - Eriksdotter (Excellent tune, but she got a yellowcard, as this tune have already been played before.)
BAEST "Crosswhore" (Never heard this one before, heavy tune)
AMORPHIS "Wrong Direction" - Jens (Great pick from Jens, AMORPHIS one more time.)
CHAPEL OF DISEASE "Void Of Words" - Stones

"The Omega Circle" is a choice picked by Chief, an excellent tune with the epicus singer Johan Langquist is back after a 32 year hiatus replacing Mats Levén who’s been with the band since 2012.
He sounds even better than before, wow. Enjoy.

From the album "The Door to Doom" February 22, 2019 Napalm Records.

Orbit Culture - Redfog

Today it's time for the second category, let's see what's got played during the "Hardrock Evening" that when off at the Twelfth Night, 5th of January.

1. A Band That Should Have Been Bigger:
2. Highfaluting:
3. Best Right Now:
4. Twin Guitars:
5. Best Textstrophe:
6. It Swings:
7. After Party:
8. Bonus:

Highfaluting, a fun category to pick tunes from, there are many tunes the fall into this word. Here my first idea was to pick something really heavy, monotonous and down-tuned, was thinking of SLEEP, CANON etc....but my final pick ended on the Swedish doom band ALASTOR and the second tune from their latest release "Slave To The Grave".

KHEMMIS "Flesh To Nothing" - Sandström (Marvelous tune, great choice)
SOMNENT "Deceit" - Chief Rebel (Another new one from Chief, sounds great)
CANDLEMASS "The Well Of Souls" - Holm (Heavy piece)
AMON AMARTH "Warriors Of The North"- M Öbrink (Heavy Vikings)
BLACK STONE CHERRY "Built For Comfort" - Hellan (Heavy cover and bluesy piece)
LIK "Celebration Of The Twisted" - Eriksdotter (Excellent tune)
ORBIT CULTURE "Redfog" - P Öbrink (Never heard this one before, cool tune)
LAMB OF GOD "512" - Jens (Great pick from Jens, a band that really kicks in headphones)
ALASTOR "Your Lives Are Worthless" - Stones

In the deep forests of southern Sweden lies the small town of Eksjö where the four-piece unsigned Metal band ORBIT CULTURE originates. "Redfog" is the title of the latest 5 tune EP, released April 6, 2018. The title tune was P Öbrink's choise for a Highfaluting tune, I can only agree, this is a killer tune. Enjoy!

Amorphis - The Four Wise Ones

Monday, time to see what's got played during normal categories during the "Hardrock Evening" that when off at the Twelfth Night, 5th of January.

The Bonus tune we played yesterday, to they we dust of the first one.

1. A Band That Should Have Been Bigger:
2. Highfaluting
3. Best Right Now:
4. Twin Guitars:
5. Best Textstrophe:
6. It Swings:
7. After Party:
8. Bonus

This was pretty hard one to set, what preferences should I choose. Well my first idea was to pick something fresh, a newcomer that have everything in the way to become that rising star that everyone dreams off. But during the time i changed my mind and went through the record collection to see what I could find. Quite immediately I found the Canadian thrash metal band ANNIHILATOR, they were founded in 1984, has released sixteen studio albums and not been given the attention and respect as they should have been. An excellent chose for category 1. "A Band That Should Have Been Bigger". I choosed "Alison Hell" taken from the debut album "Alice in Hell", released April 17, 1989.

VLTIMAS "Praevalidus" - Chief Rebel (Never heard this one before, cool)
TESTAMENT "Jun-Jun" - Holm (Hard and heavy, they should be bigger)
NEVERMORE "This Godless Endeavor" - P.Öbrink (Hell yeah)
AMORPHIS "Winters Sleep" - Hellan (Great choice, they should be bigger)
CARACH ANGREN "When Crows Tick On Windows" - M. Öbrink (Cool band with great Videos)
TRIVIUM "The Wretchedness Inside" - Eriksdotter ((Hell yeah)
AMORPHIS "The Four Wise Ones" - Sandström (Great choice, they should be bigger)
HATEWORK "In The Hands Of Deamons" - Jens (Great choice, support your locals)
ANNIHILATOR "Alison Hell" - Stones

So over this week I'll present all the categories in the order of recording, Today = "Bands That Should Have Been Bigger", Tuesday = "Highfaluting", did one extra for yesterday as the "Bonus" tune, that got added. The rest of this week I will mix mine with the other participant's choices, so here we go.

Today we pick the pretty obvious band on the category 1. "A Band That Should Have Been Bigger", 2 votes on the Finnish heavy metal band AMORPHIS, so true, they really deserve it.

Today's tune "The Four Wise Ones" is taken from the twelfth studio album "Under the Red Cloud", released worldwide on 4 September 2015 through Nuclear Blast. The album was produced by Jens Bogren, who was described as "just the right person" by keyboardist Santeri Kallio. This would be the band's last album with longtime bassist Niklas Etelävuori who left in 2017.

The band is starting their tour with Swedish SOILWORK on the January 11th and on January 15th they play here in Stockholm at Fryshuset, see all the dates below.

Accept - Burning

Yesterday, on the Twelfth Night it was time for the annual hard rock evening that always takes place on eve of Twelfth Night.

At always it's with great excitement when this day come, it's a day that I was really looking forward to, mostly for meet up with friends that share the same love for music as I do and play some good music over a few pints and the annual Pizza :)

During this evening music will be played by following a couple of predetermined categories that have been choosed a 5 monthes before the event.

The evening will go by with first category, where everyone gets their chance to play their piece of music and will explain their view and perception of the category that is current to play. After and during the music played there will be disscusions if not everyone agrees and if they do, they will enjoy and clap their hands. The nice thing is you will get their thoughts and ideas for the tune they play and if there is a story they will tell and that's the great thing about it.

And it is with great pleasure to play true the record that you have put together over the Christmas break and to hear what the other participants have made up for this event. This is a great opportunity to discovering some new music, but the best of all is that you get an evening together with friends of the same kind, where the music is the topic, one thing that I hold so dear!

So in the biggest secrets I have carved out the tracks for this evening. But as usual the record was made in the last minute. Some of the tunes were pretty obvious through the presentation of the 2018s best albums that was publish here during Christmas and New Year.

As always it's really difficult to choose songs. This year I never got time for a theme, but overall it ended up pretty Ok after all. The categories for this year was made up with during a few votes, can't remember what exactly I voted for except for the "It Swings", but here they are. And during some pipe circumstances and fotboll cup and few guys dropped off, so an extra bonus category got added in the last minute.

1. Bands That Should Have Been Bigger:
2. Highfaluting
3. Best Right Now:
4. Twin Guitars:
5. Best Textstrophe:
6. It Swings:
7. After Party:
8. Bonus

So over the next week I'll present all the categories in the order of recording, Monday = "Bands That Should Have Been Bigger", Tuesday = "Highfaluting", doing one extra for today as the "Bonus" that got added. The rest of the upcoming week I will mix mine with the other participants choices, so here we go.

This years lineup!
So for the last piece on the evening that not got played by all, mostly because it was late and not all had the chance to prepare for it. Anyway, some tunes got played.

Robert: DÉCEMBRE NOIR - Between Silence And Shards
Gustavsson: ACCEPT - Burning
Magnus Ö: WOODS OF YPRES - Allure of the earth
Holm: STUCK MOJO 🤘🏽Drawing Blood
Hellan: OZZY OSBOURNE - Hellraiser
Stones: NECROPHOBIC - Tsar Bomba

So for today as it's Sunday, a classic like ACCEPT suits fine.

"Burning" is a song by German heavy metal band ACCEPT, from their album "Breaker", released in 1981. Written and composed by Wolf Hoffmann, Peter Baltes, Jörg Fischer, Stefan Kaufmann and Udo Dirkschneider, it was also released as a single with "Down and Out" as the B-side. Two other songs on the Breaker album ("Breaker" and "Starlight") were also released as singles in 1981.

The original recording of "Burning" is notable for a fake live performance; it was recorded with crowd noise mixed in instead of being recorded at a concert. "Burning" appears on eight of Accept compilation albums: Restless The Best (1982), Best of... (1983), Midnight Highway (1983), Hungry Years (1985), The Collection (1991), Steel Glove (1995), Sharkbite – Best Of (2005) and The Accept Collection (2010).

Burning live in Copenhagen, Denmark 1995. Predator tour, enjoy!

Ozzy Osbourne - Waiting For Darkness

Last Friday it was time again for the annual hard rock evening that always takes place on eve of Twelfth Night.

At always it's with great excitement when this day come, it's a day that I was really looking forward to. It's really great to meet up with friends that share the same love for music as I do. During this evening you will hear what others have done, what music is close to their heart and what stories they have to tell about live concerts and other odd stories that have happen during the year that has passed. And of course it is with great pleasure to play true the record that you have put together over the Christmas break and to hear what the other participants have made up for this event. This is a great opportunity to discovering some new music, but the best of all is that you get an evening together with friends of the same kind, where the music is the topic, one thing that I hold so dear!

So in the biggest secret I have carved out the tracks for this evening. But as usual the record was made in the last minute. Some of the tracks were pretty obvious through the presentation of the 2017s best albums that was publish here during Christmas and New Year.

As always it's really difficult to choose songs. This year I never got time for a theme, but overall it ended up pretty Ok after all. The categories for this year was made up with one single word only except for "Best Right Now"

This years line up of categories was:

1. Festival
2. Summer
3. Best Right Now
4. Nostalgia
5. Space
6. Death
7. Hefty

So over next week I'll present all the categories in the order of recording, Monday = Festival, Tuesday = Summer and so on, doing one extra for today as it's Sunday and a classic needs to be played :)  The rest of the upcoming week I will mix mine with the other participants choices, so here we go.

My choice from yesterday's Hard Rock Night in the Categori 1. "Festival".

OZZY OSBOURNE "Waiting For Darkness" a artist that I relate as the nr 1 at Festival, if he aint playing with BLACK SABBATH or as solo you will most likely here a tune in the bar, around the area, in the PA system or at the camping place. A festival without OZZY isn't a real festival.

Today's tune "Waiting For Darkness" is taken from his third studio album "Bark at the Moon", originally released on 15 November 1983. A tune that he never played live :(

Pantera - 5 Minutes Alone

Yesterday it was time again for the annual hard rock evening that is always on eve of Twelfth Night. With some great excitement to hear what the other participants have made up for this event and see what others liked my view of things. But one of the best is to discovering some new music, but the best of all is that you get an evening together with friends of the same kind, where the music is the topic, one thing that I hold so dear!

Here is the gang!

My record for the evening!

So in the biggest secret I have carved out the tracks for this evening, some new discoveries that showed up at the last minute and some tunes which I had in my baggage for a long time. But as usual the record was made in the last minute. Some of the tracks were pretty obvious through the presentation of the 2015's best albums that was publish here during Christmas and New Year.

As always it's really difficult to choose songs, how the hell select one. Well, I simply had to find a type of theme, a red thread to follow in order to separate out a bit, to make the life easier in the selection of the tune. But this time my red thread never got complete, always one or two categories that screwed things up so I decided to just pick some tunes without a theme. I will start earlier next year to be able to figure out some great tunes in a theme. My choices ended up as a pretty fuzzy story.

This years line up of categories was:

1. Joy of Play and Swing.
 2. Best finish/end song.
3. In The Shadow Of Big Four.
4. Good although they sing in Swedish.
5. Best song from the 2015 best album.
6. God Save The Queen - Pay tribute to England with a song.
7. The song that represents the musical best decade.
8. Best right now

So over the next few days I'll present all my choices in the order of recording I had with me, but this time I will mix it with tunes from the others :)

Here they come. Track no. 1 (track no.2 tomorrow and so on...)

My choice from yesterday's Hard Rock Night in the categorie 1. "Joy of Play and Swing".

CLUTCH - "Noble Savage" A tune that makes it really hard to sit still and the Air Guitar is ready in it's flightcase. A real rocker!

Other tunes in the same categorie that was played.

MOTÖRHEAD - Orgasmatron,
ELECTRIC BOYS - Groovus Maximus,
PANTERA - 5 Minutes Alone,
AIRBOURNE - Runnin' Wild,
FACEBREAKER - Zombie flash cult,
SATAN'S WRATH - Only Satan Is Lord,
IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC - Anywhere Loud

So today's tune "5 Minutes Alone" was played by the host of the evening, thanks man for this.  The tune is taken from PANTERAs 1994 album "Far Beyond Driven"

STORY BEHIND THE SONG (from Vinnie Paul): There was a guy in the front row in San Diego who was heckling Phil Anselmo (vocalist). Phil finally had enough, so he incited the crowd to jump this guy's ass and beat the shit out of him on the spot, so he sued us. And when his dad called our manager, his exact quote was, "You just give me five minutes alone with that Phil Anselmo guy and I'll show him who's big daddy around here." Phil's response was, "You just give me five minutes with that cat's dad and I'll whoop his ass." That's where that song came from.
