Best of 2017

Here we’re already, first day on a new year, yes it's already 2018. As always in December we get into the tedious task of listing our favourite albums of year!, you have seen them all now, a total summery can be read below. As always, it was really hard to make that final list, but hey “a man gotta do what a man gotta do”. I know I have exclude some, as far as I can see is that the box with Vinyls with unplayed records are more than half full, shame on me.

It’s also the time for me to do a little retrospective of this year for me and Tune Of The Day.
We reached 470 followers on Facebook, kinda cool but hey I wish it would be more, so hit like for gods sake. We have passed 4400 posts, that's a pretty much, but it's since the start in 2007 I guess it's pretty valid.

2017 have been a very good year work wise, a few longer projects have been done, a bunch of concerts, festivals, tours, travels, air ports, hotels, cars, buses, trains etc etc.
To many to be listed here, but the photo below will tell some at-least.

My aim for 2018 is to work less and charge more, well I guess that is wishful thinking, but that is something I would like to do. Mostly to be able to spend more time with the family that I mistreated for so long all these years with work. There is a few things that is already set for next year, something that I already is looking forward to.

Some thoughts about the Top 50 album list. First, it got reduced down from the Top 100 album list that we had last year, it was freakin' mastodont, big and very hard to set, try it your self and you will see that’s not an easy task to manage. 2017’s lineup is very strong in it's own. Regarding albums, yes, I am still using the best tool for my records "Discogs", I just love it!! But hey, it's pretty dangerous surfing around, always end with a new purchased record. Even if my best friend "Discogs" is around, I still have bought a few records twice, bah! And this year I will not even look how much records that have entered my home during 2017. We keep it as a secret,  I think that's the best way to do it as I know deep inside that I have burned my budget more than once already :) Ok, let's look on what's was best during 2017.

Power Trip - Executioner's Tax (Swing of The Axe)

"Nightmare Logic” with the Texas hardcore thrashers POWER TRIP takes the 1st place on the Tune Of The Day's TOP 50 album list of the Best Albums 2017.

"Nightmare Logic” is the second crushing, soul mangling, neck bustin’ release. It's a record full of raw energy from start to finish, great structure, powerful rich tones and fearless riffs with a massive attitude. With hooks and tightness rivaling greats like PANTERA or PENTAGRAM and production by the esteemed Arthur Rizk, "Nightmare Logic" punishes fans not only sonically but with pure songwriting skill. This is an excellent album with great songwriting skill, the lyrics reflects human suffering, devaluation of human life by those who’ve gained power through money and politics.

This is the BEST thrash album in 2017.

POWER TRIP show their skills and prove they are here for the long haul.

Today's tune "Executioner's Tax (Swing of The Axe)" is directed by Andy Capper, photography by Joel Pront, edited by Andrew Betsch.

Mastodon - Steambreather

"Emperor Of Sand" is the seventh studio album from the American progressive metal dudes MASTODON and it reaches the 2nd place on the Tune of The Day's TOP 100 album list of the Best Albums 2017.

"Emperor Of Sand" is a masterpiece from the guys, where every note that Troy, Bill and Brent hits feels pertinent and Brann incredible drumming is just freaking stunning, what a sound they manage to create and the balance is just perfect, what an album. Read the review here!

The concept and story in "Emperor Of Sand" follows a desert wanderer who has been handed a death sentence. Themes of death and survival are woven into the song's lyrics.

Sólstafir - Ísafold

"Berdreyminn” the sixth album release from the four Icelanders SÓLSTAFIR reaches the 3 place on the Tune of The Day's TOP 100 album list of the Best Albums 2017.

"Berdreyminn" is a soundtrack full of atmospheric cathartic tunes that will drag you out from your daily routines and move you to the Icelandic plains. The album runs for almost 60 mins, with an average tune time of 7-8 minutes. "Berdreyminn" is a where bold experimentalism is mixed with transient windy riffs, amazing melodic spaces and explosive power. This is a work of art, depth droney guitars, sentimental pianos and prismatic crescendos that converge beyond the five bodily senses. With "Berdreyminn", SÓLSTAFIR pushes it to the next level of their creativity.

"Berdreyminn" is produced by Birgir Birgirsson (SIGUR RÓS, ALCEST) and Jaime Gomez Arellano (GHOST, PARADISE LOST, ORANSSI PAZUZU)

"Berdreyminn" is an impressive album, read my review here!

Today´s tune ”Ísafold”, with an Icelandic atmospheric hard-rock groove flows thru the space as a midwinter dream during Christmas time. This clip is recorded Live at Zal Ozhidaniya 15.11.2017

Elder - Staving Off Truth

ELDER, the heavy psych band hailing from Boston, USA with their fourth full length album "Reflections of a Floating World” reaches the 6th place on the Tune of The Day's TOP 100 album list of the Best Albums 2017.

This is an album that suits the autumn darkness that hides on the doormat. The main man Nick DiSalvo claims that COLOUR HAZE and DUNGEN are "the bands that have really influenced the methodology or the philosophy behind the new direction". I see the point, as that is something that's bubbles in ELDERS music, even if the sound is pretty varied and heavily based around rock and metal and engine steams heaviness and riffs from bands like BLACK SABBATH and SLEEP and some psychedelia from ELECTRIC WIZARD.

Read the review here!

Today’s tune ”Staving Off Truth” the clip is recorded live at The Underworld, Camden, London, UK (9 August 2017)

The tune for real.
