Deep Purple - Oh Well

Thursday, time for a cover!

"Oh Well" is a song first recorded by the rock band FLEETWOOD MAC in 1969, composed by vocalist and lead guitarist Peter Green. It first appeared as a FLEETWOOD MAC single in various countries in 1969 and subsequently appeared on revised versions of that year's "Then Play On" album and the band's "Greatest Hits" album in 1971.

After the acclaimed release of “7 And 7 Is”, the first song revealed from their upcoming album “Turning To Crime”, DEEP PURPLE release their brand new single “Oh Well”.

“Oh Well” is a song originally written and recorded by FLEETWOOD MAC. It is accompanied by a music video that shows DEEP PURPLE on a very special mission.

Label and management would like to state that nobody from the band or crew, nor members of the media, were hurt during the shooting of the video in Germany in early October.

“Everyone knows ‘Oh Well’ is a great song,” Roger Glover says. “Steve did the demo for that one. You never quite know where it‘s gonna go with Steve because he is very inventive. Right up until the point, with a couple of verses in, it was pretty much the same as the original. And then, all of a sudden, it took off like a rocket… in some other space.”

“Turning to Crime” is the first studio album by DEEP PURPLE entirely made of songs not written by the band and previously recorded by other artists. It is produced by Bob Ezrin and will be released on earMUSIC on November 26, 2021.

Kadavar - The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)

Thursday, time for a cover.

"The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)" is a song written by Peter Green and recorded by FLEETWOOD MAC. It was released as a single in the UK in May 1970 and reached No. 10 on the British charts, a position it occupied for four consecutive weeks. "The Green Manalishi" was the last song Green made with Fleetwood Mac before leaving the band.

The song was written during Green's final months with the band, at a time when he was struggling with LSD and had withdrawn from other members of the band. While there are several theories about the meaning of the title "Green Manalishi", Green always maintained that the song is about money, as represented by the devil. Green was reportedly angered by the other band members' refusal to share their financial gains.

Green has explained that he wrote the song after experiencing a drug-induced dream in which he was visited by a green dog which barked at him. He understood that the dog represented money. "It scared me because I knew the dog had been dead a long time. It was a stray and I was looking after it. But I was dead and had to fight to get back into my body, which I eventually did. When I woke up, the room was really black and I found myself writing the song." He also said that he wrote the lyrics the following day, in Richmond Park. Supposedly, he was unable to record Robert Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail" following the incident, having conflated Johnson's hellhound with the green dog-demon of his dream.[citation needed] This is supported by his discography, in which Green's sole post-Manalishi cover of "Hellhound" was sung by bandmate Nigel Watson.

Today's version is made by the german rock band KADAVAR, taken from the new split single where they are teaming up with LUCIFER for a limited split 7“. Both bands dug through their records and chose a classic track to cover. KADAVAR recorded a version of "The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown) by FLEETWOOD MAC and on LUCIFERs side, you´ll hear "Pull Away / So Many Times" by DUST. Limited to 1500 total with 5 different color options. Enjoy today's cover of "The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)"

Day two of Popaganda contained an interesting line up of bands like LOVA, Linnea Henriksson, PALE WAVES, MWUANA, BIPOLAR SUNSHINE, Tove Styrke, PARCELS, METRONOMY, Jenny Wilson and Veronica Maggio.

PARCELS, the young disco-pop breakthrough band hailing from Australia and going to release their debut album. The first emerging band ever to collaborate with the legendary DAFT PUNK (Overnight single – summer 2017). PARCELS make immaculately polished MOR pop that would sound at home in the company of CHIC or 70s-era FLEETWOOD MAC.

PARCELS did a hell of a show at Popaganda, absolutely the best live performance that day at Erikdalsbadet, extremely hard to stand still during their set.

PARCELS composed of Louie Swain (keyboards), Patrick Hetherington (keyboards), Noah Hill (bass), Anatole "Toto" Serret (drums) and Jules Crommelin (guitar). The band formed in 2014 while at high school in Byron Bay, Australia, and are now based in Berlin, Germany.

Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie - Too Far Gone

For many music lovers, the legendary band FLEETWOOD MAC was the soundtrack of the '70s. Their album "Rumours" topped the charts for an incredible 31 weeks. Now, two of the band's alums, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Christine McVie, have joined together for a brand new duet album.

The backstory behind Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie‘s self-titled album is filled with plenty of the drama their famous FLEETWOOD MAC lineup has been serving up since the mid ’70s.

That classic quintet — Buckingham, McVie, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie — was set to record its first album since 1987’s Tango in the Night when Nicks decided to focus on her solo career instead, leaving new material written by Buckingham and Christine McVie — some together, some separately — without a home … until they pushed forward with the project, reconfigured as a duet record, and recruited drummer Fleetwood and bassist John McVie.

So, basically, Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie is a FLEETWOOD MAC record minus one key member. Nothing new for the often-splintered group: 1990’s Behind the Mask was made without Buckingham, 1995’s Time without Buckingham and Nicks and 2003’s Say You Will (which followed the reunited band’s 1997 live comeback, The Dance) without Christine McVie. And like the albums made over the past quarter century, there are some good moments, some underwhelming ones and some missed opportunities.

Thankfully, Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie is a lot closer to the springy Say You Will than the forgettable Time. It starts with three killer songs: Buckingham’s “Sleeping Around the Corner,” “Feel About You,” a co-write with McVie, and “My World,” another Buckingham composition. And it reinforces just how reliable FLEETWOOD MAC can be, even without their most popular singer-songwriter.

Nicks is clearly missed at times, especially her part in the vocal trio’s harmonies. But Buckingham — one of music’s most undervalued guitarists, singers, songwriters and producers — checks in with some of his most engaging songs in years. And McVie, who last released a solo record in 2004, sounds revitalized following her long absence from the studio.

Occasionally the album comes off as separate and distinct solo records, sorta like FLEETWOOD MACs 1979 ”Tusk", the double LP that often found the band’s three singer-songwriters serving as each other’s backing players. (Indeed, “Sleeping Around the Corner” first appeared as a bonus track on Buckingham’s last solo record, 2011’s Seeds We Sow.) But Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie still manages to fall together thanks to the two artists’ undeniable creative fusion, which powered songs like “Don’t Stop” and “Think About Me” in the past.

There’s filler — “Too Far Gone,” the album’s heaviest song, relies on a riff and percussion breakdown borrowed from “Tusk,” and McVie is best when pushed outside of the confines of her big melancholy piano ballad here, “Game of Pretend” — but the majestic pop landscapes Buckingham drops most of the songs into make even the flimsiest tracks a treat to hear. And the longtime rhythm team of Fleetwood and McVie consistently and effortlessly locks into the grooves. In other words, Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie is a pretty good FLEETWOOD MAC album. It’s Nicks’ loss.

Today’s tune ”Too Far Gone” is taken from their brand new album, enjoy!

Hayden Calvin - Cut Love

From early beginnings, the Australian singer/songwriter, Hayden Calnin has carved out a path refusing to adhere to convention and genre. By the time the multi-instrumentalist had graduated from film school, a major in sound design had set the scene for Calnin to take an interest in music production.

On his first two self-produced EPs, he explored the realms of everything from folk through to downbeat, melting together powerful melodies with understated electronic production. This lead to significant attention across major international blogs, Australian radio and USA college radio leading to US sync placements on the likes of Suits, Parenthood and Teen Wolf, festival slots at Falls and NYE on the Hill and supports with the likes of Missy Higgins, Matt Corby, Tom Odell and The Antlers.

Since his last EP, Calnin has found inspiration from current electronic artists such as M83 whilst delving more deeply into early childhood influences from his parents’ collection such as FLEETWOOD MAC and COUNTING CROWS which has led him to revisit his first love—the guitar. His sound on recently recorded material is a spectacular melting of where he’s been and where he’s going as an artist, remaining faithful to that ‘late night’ vibe, while bringing forward his melodic side.

Today’s tune "Cut Love” is taken from the album "Cut Love Pt. 1”. Directed By: Hayden Calnin + Lukas McFarlane, Performance/Choreography: Lukas McFarlane and Daisy Calnin, Cinematography: Thom Neal, Steadicam: Aaron Foley, Camera assist: James Bentley, Edit: Hayden Calvin, Stills: Al Parkinson and Laura Calnin and thanks to Joy Luck Studios for the use of their rooftop and home.

Blues Pills - Gypsy

I head across the country, looking for Mexico
I got stuck in Kansas with no place to go
Oh I'm a gypsy, that's what I am
Uh, I'm a gypsy, and I don't give a damn
Somebody took my load
And I got no place to go
But I'm trying to find my mind
Yes I'm trying to find myself

That's the first verse from the song "Gypsy" by the Swedish rock act BLUES PILLS.

The band formed back in 2011 when Elin Larsson, Cory Berry and Zack Anderson, all just in their early twenties, formed a group which should quickly become one of the most acclaimed and interesting bands in music. Behold the birth of a new musical experience, an experience we thought was long gone, lost in time and space. Behold the birth of BLUES PILLS.

The young American-Swedish-French quartet create a very unique, intense and extraordinary rock atmosphere while at the same time having a major mainstream appeal that takes you right back to the time of BLUES PILLS’ ancestors Aretha Franklin, THE ORIGINAL FLEETWOOD MAC, LED ZEPPELIN, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and CREAM. Driving bass lines, grooving drums and guitar solos from another planet by the only 18 year old Dorian Sorriaux, harmonized and tied together with such easiness, such delight, by Elin’s incredible voice.

Todays tune "Gypsy" is taken from the self-titled debut album, released on 25 July 2014. Recorded in Gothenburg with infamous producer Don Alsterberg (GRAVEYARD). The artwork is by the incredible artist Marijke Koger-Dunham and it was painted sometime in the late 60’s. The Video by Zack Anderson and Color by Filmgruppe Chaos.

The Besnard Lakes - People of the Sticks

The Besnard Lakes are from Montreal and basically consists of the pair of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas. Along with the more or less permanent band members and in cooperation with well-known people from the Canadian indie scene has during the years released a bunch of EPs and four albums. Two of them have been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize. Jace Lasek is himself a producer and has in Break Glass Studio produced small feats for a bunch of Canadian greats such as Wolf Parade, The Dears and Stars. Along with the release of Until the Excess, Imperceptible UFO are they out touring and doing three shows on Swedish soil.

In 10 years, The Besnard Lakes run with rakes in their hands through rock history, through the 60's sunniest surfpop choirs through the 90s dull grunge rumble to today's most fervent dream pop. The catch is, they have repeatedly tipped the holders and then sew quite large and psychedelic indie-quilts of. Over time, The Besnard Lakes simply become specialists in creating surf rock nightly tsunamis. Beach Boys, Veruca Salt, Fleetwood Mac, My Bloody Valentine, Pink Floyd and ELO are just some of the bands the reviewer has found that The Besnard Lakes might remind me of. Just recently dropped the band's new single, "People of the sticks" into our heads. The single is the first taste of The Besnard Lakes new album Until the Excess, Imperceptible UFO (released April 2).

Support for the last night show was three friends from Gothenburg, named "Milano Sun" that composing a soundtrack to the moment during an inter-railing in Europe for a few summers ago. Previously, the singles 'Already Gone', 'Vertigo' and 'If You Go Home Alone' released all of which have been well received around the world and the music is described as dreamy pop filled with melancholy and longing. EP "Scandinavia" Released May 4

The gig was really good, too bad the attendance was so poor, some 100 paying guests only, strange that this band has not hit yet, but it will certainly hit in the near future for they were really awesome live, the guitar dist and the dreamy vocals had to work hard, even smoke machine were in full swing.

Even the support act did a good performance and can be something we will hear more in the future.

Todays tune "People of the Sticks" is taken from the fourth studio album "Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO", released in April 2013 on Jagjaguwar

Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well

Oh Well it's Sunday again, that means it's time for a Classic again, a few days ago we played a tune called "Die" with the band Girls, the tune was inspired by today's tune.

"Oh Well" is a song recorded by Fleetwood Mac in 1969, and composed by vocalist and lead guitarist Peter Green. It first appeared as a Fleetwood Mac single in various countries in 1969, subsequently appearing on the Greatest Hits album in 1971. It later featured on the 1992 boxed set 25 Years - The Chain, and on the 2002 compilation album The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. A slightly different version of the song was included on the 1998 compilation The Vaudeville Years.

"Oh Well" was composed in two parts, the first part being released as the A-side of the single and occasionally referred to as "Oh Well, Part 1". The B-side, "Part 2", was an entirely different, much longer instrumental piece with a classical influence. Both parts were released on the Then Play On album, fused together to form one long track of nearly nine minutes. At concerts, only the first part was played, and live versions of the song have been released on many Fleetwood Mac live albums throughout their career such as Live and Live at the BBC, as well on the B-sides of singles. After Green's departure, the song was sung by various other members, including Bob Welch, Lindsey Buckingham and Rick Vito.

"Oh Well, Part 1" has been viewed by some critics as one of the early crossovers between blues rock and heavy metal, along with songs by others such as Led Zeppelin. Although recorded on a multitrack recorder the song is not available in true stereo. Probably because the stereo master is lost or erased.

"Oh Well" has been covered on record by many other artists and groups, including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Gordon Giltrap, Joe Jackson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, The Rockets, Big Country, Tribe of Gypsies, Ratt and Tourniquet. The song was also played live by Jimmy Page performing with the The Black Crowes and released on his 2000 album Live at the Greek.

Girls - Die

Girls was an indie rock band from San Francisco, California. The band comprised two key members: Christopher Owens, songwriter and lead singer, and Chet "JR" White, who played bass and produced. Between 2009 - 2012 they released two full-length albums and one EP. In July 2012 Owens announced that he was leaving the band and would continue to record as a solo artist.

Owens was born into the fundamentalist cult Children of God, but absconded at 16 from their community in Slovenia to Amarillo, Texas. It took him years of exploring common technology, hardcore punk and nihilism, among other things, to cope in mainstream society. Upon arriving in San Francisco, Owens met White, a Bay Area native who was raised in Santa Cruz, California. White began recording bands in his parents' garage. Upon meeting, the two developed a strong bond and interest in similar music, as well as a shared background in Punk/Hardcore music. Shortly thereafter Owens and White started recording what was to later be their debut album, titled Album (September 2009).

Father, Son, Holy Ghost is the second and last album, released September 13, 2011. The album was heavily influenced by music from the 1960s and 1970s. Bands that influenced the album's sound included Deep Purple, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, Beach Boys and Pink Floyd.

Todays tune "Die" is taken from the album "Father, Son, Holy Ghost" and is the hardest song on the album, glorious riffs, howling and slightly vulgar beats, much like I want it. The tune and was influenced by Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well."

Tom Petty - Don't Come Around Here No More

For around two weeks ago so we had to really celebrate a visit from no less than Tom Petty! It certainly was not last night he was here last, kind 20 years or so. That one have been waiting for this moment and wow what a gig it was. Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers rocked really at Globen and offered the entire registry when it came to selections from his musical treasure chest (check the setlist below).

Of course the camera went up, but only the portable camera, the "fine" camera had to stay home this evening. But Micke Sandström got the chance to shoot for real, so I take the opportunity to show some of his pictures, see below.

Thomas Earl "Tom" Petty (born October 20, 1950) is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and was a founding member of the late 1980s supergroup Traveling Wilburys and Mudcrutch. He has also performed under the pseudonyms of Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. and Muddy Wilbury.

He has recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, many of which remain heavily played on adult contemporary and classic rock radio. His music, and notably his hits, have become popular among younger generations as he continues to host sold-out shows. Throughout his career, Petty and his collaborators have sold 60 million albums.

Here are some pictures from the show, first my mediocre.

Here is some professional photos from the master man "Micke Sandström"

Todays tune "Don't Come Around Here No More" is a song written by Tom Petty of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and David A. Stewart of the Eurythmics. It was released in February 1985 as the lead single from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' 1985 album "Southern Accents".

The background of the tune:

The original inspiration was a romantic encounter that Stewart had with Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. On The Howard Stern Show, Dave Stewart explained that the title's phrase was actually uttered by Nicks. She had broken up with Joe Walsh the night before, and invited Stewart to her place for a party after an early Eurythmics show in Los Angeles. Stewart did not know who she was at the time, but went anyway. When the party goers all disappeared to a bathroom for a couple of hours to snort cocaine, he decided to go upstairs to bed. He woke up at 5am to find Nicks in his room trying on Victorian clothing and described the entire scenario as very much reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. Later that morning, she told Walsh, "Don't come around here no more".
