Jason Isbell trades the plodding drums and rhythm of Metallica’s “Sad But True” for nasty slide guitar played at breakneck speed. Isbell’s version of the song will appear on the heavy metal pioneers’ upcoming 30th anniversary edition of 1991’s Black Album.
Backed by his group THE 400 UNIT, Isbell careens through the song like a train off its tracks. He and guitarist Sadler Vaden spar with dueling slide licks, transforming “Sad But True” into some kind of blues-rock monster. Isbell throws himself into the vocals with abandon, singing in a high tenor that’s in contrast to James Hetfield’s original low rumble.
In a 2017 interview with the Village Voice, Isbell talked about expanding his guitar playing into different genres — including heavy metal. “I love the idea of playing guitar on different kinds of records, even metal records, just stuff nobody would ever expect. That’s because I get a lot of enjoyment out of playing all different styles of guitar,” he said. “Nobody probably realizes that, but I would love to play guitar on a really fast metal record at some point, or on a blues album.”
1986 was the year when the first PC virus, Brain, starts to spread. And I can say that I didn't know that a computer could be sick :) This is also the year when the debut album "Doomsday For The Deceiver" by the American thrash metal band FLOTSAM AND JETSAM saw the first light.
"Doomsday For The Deceiver" was released on July 4, 1986, on a budget of $12,000, and recorded in two weeks. It is the only album by FLOTSAM AND JETSAM with Jason Newsted before his departure for METALLICA. Most lyrics were written by Newsted; his songwriting contributions also appeared on the band's next album "No Place For Disgrace" and their 2012 album "Ugly Noise". The album was re-released in 2006, including a re-mastered version, DVD, and original release. This album was the first of only a handful to ever receive a 6k rating from the influential British magazine Kerrang!. The album cover can be seen in the 1988 movie Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers.

The fast-rising stoner punks BOKASSA have gotten a name after toured Europe supporting METALLICA on the "WorldWired Tour" in 2019, with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich giving the band a glowing endorsement.
BOKASSA released its latest album, "Crimson Riders" and pretty recently they have unveiled the official video the tune "Vultures", taken from their latest album.
BOKASSA fuse stoner rock riffs and groove with the energy and volatility of punk and hardcore, into their own unique brand of stoner punk. New album "Crimson Riders" was recorded back home in Trondheim’s Brygga Studio, with production by Yngve Andersen (BLOOD COMMAND), mixing by Simon Jackman, and mastering by the legendary Grammy-winner Brian “Big Bass” Gardener (Dr. Dre, BAD RELIGION, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL).

"Kill 'Em All" the debut studio album by the American heavy metal band METALLICA also made a big impact for the pimply brat who just beginning to get pubic hair. Thrash metal, Speed metal made its appearance in one's life. From here it could go a little anyway, a very exciting time.
Kill 'Em All was released on July 25, 1983, by the independent record label Megaforce Records. "Kill 'Em All" is regarded as a groundbreaking album for thrash metal because of its precise musicianship, which fuses new wave of British heavy metal riffs with hardcore punk tempos. The album's musical approach and lyrics were markedly different from rock's mainstream of the early 1980s and inspired a number of bands who followed in similar manner. The album generated two singles, "Whiplash" and "Jump in the Fire".
METALLICA began by playing shows in local clubs in Los Angeles. They recorded several demos to gain attention from club owners, and eventually relocated to San Francisco to secure the services of bassist Cliff Burton. The group's No Life 'til Leather demo tape (1982) was noticed by Megaforce label head Jon Zazula, who signed them and provided a budget of $15,000 for recording. The album was recorded in May with producer Paul Curcio at the Music America Studios in Rochester, New York. It was originally intended to be titled "Metal Up Your Ass", with cover art featuring a hand clutching a dagger emerging from a toilet bowl. The band was asked to change the name because distributors feared that releasing an album with such an offensive title and artwork would diminish its chances of commercial success. METALLICA promoted the album on the two-month co-headlining "Kill 'Em All" for One tour with English heavy metal band RAVEN in the U.S. Although the initial shipment was 15,000 copies in the U.S., the album sold 60,000 copies worldwide by the end of METALLICAs Seven Dates of Hell European tour in 1984.

"Mama Said" is a country-rock ballad by American heavy metal band METALLICA from their sixth album "Load", with music and lyrics by James Hetfield (music credited to Hetfield/Ulrich). The lyrics represent a man or boy who is learning to find his own way in life away from his mother. The song is directly written about Hetfield's difficult relationship with his mother, who died of cancer when he was 16 years old.
The song is a departure from METALLICAs usual heavy metal sound; its genre-blending style incorporates country, blues, and hard rock. "Mama Said" begins with acoustic guitar and, during the chorus, becomes flush with a country-flavored vocal harmony and steel guitar. Toward the end, the song features power chords on electric guitar.
This is a song for James Hetfield's mother, who died of cancer when he was young. The song talks about his regrets of not being able to spend more time with her and how he hopes that she will still love him when he sees her again ("Mama now I'm coming home. I'm not all you wished of me. A mother's love for her son unspoken, help me be. Yeah I took your love for granted and all the things you said to me. I need your arms to welcome me. But a cold stone is all I see."), sad story but hey, he misses his mother and so do I.
"Mama Said" has never been featured as a part of METALLICAs live setlist. Hetfield has performed this song live, however, using a single steel-stringed acoustic guitar with no drum or bass accompaniment. He also performed it along with country singer Jessi Colter on CMT's Outlaw Concert, along with Hetfield's cover of Waylon Jennings's "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out of Hand."

I wish we could celebrate our national day same as the Norweigan does, but no, we don't...sad.
So today we celebrate them and play Norway's finest stoner-punk band BOKASSA, a band that released a brand new music video for "Mouthbreathers Inc." yesterday, taken off of the new upcoming album "Crimson Riders" out June 21st.
BOKASSA plays some fuse stoner rock riffs and groove with the energy and volatility of punk and hardcore, into their own unique brand of stoner punk. Their 2017 debut album, "Divide & Conquer" was an excellent release.
"Crimson Riders" was recorded back home in Trondheim’s Brygga Studio, with production by the band together with Yngve Andersen (BLOOD COMMAND), mixing by Simon Jackman, and mastering by the legendary Brian ‘Big Bass’ Gardener.
BOKASSA enthuses, “We are very excited to release "Crimson Riders". Nine songs which revolve around everything from cults, religion, and border patrols to beer-drinking anti-heroes and immortal space pirates! Sonically, the album gives the listener everything from classic stoner-punk tracks, groovy desert songs, and high speed trash metal, to hardcore-oriented sing-a-longs. This time we also played around with both cellos and saxophone in the studio so expect a few curveballs here and there.”

GHOST has released "the perfect love song for that special demon in your life", an erotic dance video of the tune “Dance Macabre”
“Dance Macabre” is the second music video and radio single from the Grammy-winning rock/pop band's most recent album "Prequelle"
GHOST recently sold out the very prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London, and METALLICA just announced the Swedish band will be special guest on its 25-date European stadium tour next summer. GHOST will headline its two-act "A Pale Tour Named Death" fall North American tour that starts in Dallas on October 25. The North American trek includes two headline arena shows, The Forum in Los Angeles, and New York City's Barclays Center, see all the dates below.
The video is also notable as it tells the backstory of GHOST frontman “Papa Emeritus,” and how he got his iconic look. A woman seduces one of the men, who emerges with “Papa’s” iconic face paint and punches him in the eye creating a blue and bloodshot left eye. The song itself touches on how many people coped with the Black Plague in Europe back in the 14th century by dancing and partying until they died. In other GHOST news, a lawsuit filed against GHOST mastermind Tobias Forge by former bandmates was dismissed in a Swedish court. The judge ruled in favor of Forge, forcing the ex-GHOST musicians to pay the frontman’s legal fees.

METALLICA and The Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) received the Polar Music Prize 2018 at a ceremony at the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm in June 2018. Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo from METALLICA attended the event, as well as Dr Ahmad Sarmast, the founder of ANIM.
Several artists honored the Laureates during the evening; Aryana Sayeed, Loreen, GHOST, CANDLEMASS, Vargas & Lagola, MONEYBROTHER with Seek & Destroy, Dennis Lyxzén, Mikkey Dee, Loney Dear and Tuva Syvertsen. The host of the evening was Swedish mezzo-soprano and journalist Boel Adler.

METALLICA and The Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) received the Polar Music Prize 2018 at a ceremony at the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm in June 2018. Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo from METALLICA attended the event, as well as Dr Ahmad Sarmast, the founder of ANIM.
Several artists honoured the Laureates during the evening; Aryana Sayeed, Loreen, GHOST, CANDLEMASS, Vargas & Lagola, MONEYBROTHER with Seek & Destroy, Dennis Lyxzén, Mikkey Dee, Loney Dear and Tuva Syvertsen. Host of the evening was Swedish mezzo-soprano and journalist Boel Adler.

The Swedish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Loney Dear did a magical version of METALLICAs No Leaf Clover/Wherever I May Roam at the Polar Music Prize ceremony, see the clip below.
Loney Dear is the pseudonym of Swedish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Emil Svanängen (born March 29, 1979).
METALLICA is in town for two sold-out events at Ericsson Globe here in Stockholm. The first show was yesterday and next one is tomorrow and I will get the opportunity to be there to watch them once again.
So today we pick a classic from them. "One" is a song by American heavy metal band METALLICA. It was released as the third and final single from their fourth studio album, "...And Justice for All" (1988). Written by band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, "One" is an anti-war song that portrays a World War I soldier who is severely wounded - arms and legs blown off by an artillery shell, blind and unable to speak or move - begging God to take his life as he feels constant pain. His only hope is to devise a way to communicate with the hospital staff. In the music video, he jolts in the hospital bed, spelling "Kill me" in Morse code. Production of the song was done by the band alongside Flemming Rasmussen.
A video for the song was introduced in January 1989 on MTV. Shot in black and white by director Michael Salomon, the video's story is intercut with scenes taken from the 1971 anti-war film Johnny Got His Gun. Due to routinely being required to pay royalty fees to continue showing the music video, Metallica bought the rights to the film. The video was ranked at number one on MTV soon after its introduction.
METALLICA performed "One" for the 31st Annual Grammy Awards show broadcast from Los Angeles in 1989. The next year, the song won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, the first ever win in that category. The band also performed the song alongside pianist Lang Lang at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards in 2014. The song is one of the band's most popular pieces and has remained a live staple since the release of the album, making this the most played song from "...And Justice for All".
For the first 17 seconds of the song, there are a series of sound effects with a battle theme, an artillery barrage and helicopter are heard and continues slightly over a clean tone guitar intro by Hetfield before Kirk Hammett comes in over the top with a clean-toned solo. Ulrich's drums come in and continue until each chorus when the guitars become heavy and distorted before returning to clean. There is a second solo by Hammett halfway through the song, before lyrics cut out and the song gradually gets more heavy and distorted until the "machine gun" guitar build up (played alongside double bass drums) before the next, often highly praised, guitar solo by Hammett, and a final dual solo by Hammett and Hetfield. The song begins in 4/4 time, and later 3/4 as well as 2/4.
In 1991, James Hetfield told Guitar World that he wrote the song's opening B-G chord change (miscalling it a 'modulation') based on an idea prompted by the VENOM song "Buried Alive" from their second studio album, Black Metal.
“ I had been fiddling around with that B-G modulation for a long time. The idea for the opening came from a Venom song called "Buried Alive".The kick drum machine-gun part near the end wasn't written with the war lyrics in mind, it just came out that way. We started that album with Mike Clink as producer. He didn't work out so well, so we got Flemming to come over and save our asses. ”
The song starts off in a soft melodic setting, but it develops through multiple sections into heavier and faster speed metal sounds, leading up to a technically complex tapping solo by Kirk Hammett, and a dual guitar section by Hammett and James Hetfield.
The song is based on the idea of a soldier losing all of his limbs and being unable to hear, speak, or see, set to a World War I backdrop. In an interview in New Zealand in 1989, Ulrich describes the movie Johnny Got His Gun as having a similar theme, and this was the reason it was incorporated into the video.
"One" was the first Metallica song for which a music video was created. The music video, directed by Bill Pope and Michael Salomon, debuted on MTV on January 20, 1989. The video, shot in Long Beach, California, is almost entirely in black and white and features the band performing the song in a warehouse. It features dialogue and several scenes from the 1971 film adaptation of Johnny Got His Gun. Timothy Bottoms can be seen starring as Joe Bonham, the main character in the novel (written by Dalton Trumbo and published in September 1939; the basis for the 1971 film).
Three versions of the "One" music video were made; the first (the longest, album version) contained scenes of both the band and scenes from the movie. The second was simply a shortened version of the first, and the third, often known as the "jammin' version", lacked scenes from the movie (the song and video fade at the last bridge in the third version).
Like many other music videos from METALLICA, "One" puts great emphasis on the performances of the band members as musicians, with many shots of Hetfield, Newsted and Hammett's hands picking and fretting. The video features the band members in a typical early METALLICA fashion: playing (as if in rehearsal) in some sort of warehouse, in tight formation around Ulrich's drum kit, and dressed in casual street clothes and with long untamed hair.
In the music video, it can be clearly seen that both Hetfield and Hammett are playing ESP guitars; Jason Newsted is on a 5-string Wal bass. It is also clear that Newsted is playing bass with his fingers at the start of the song but later switches to a pick.
Two of the three versions of the "One" music video appear on 2 of One, a VHS released on July 1, 1990 and both would again be featured on the band's 2006 music video compilation DVD.
"One" is a favorite of many METALLICA fans, and therefore is a fixture of the band's live performances. When played live, the song is usually played with guitars tuned down by one semitone (a permanent fixture of their studio and live work since the post METALLICA era, save for "Death Magnetic" in the case of the former) and is preceded by pyrotechnics and the same sounds of war such as machine guns, and bombs exploding as heard on the recorded version. The song also features heavy strobe lighting during the heavier half of the song, namely before the Hammett solo.
When METALLICA appeared on The Howard Stern Show in September 2013, James Hetfield explained that this was not so much an anti-war song as an observation. "War is a part of man," he explained. "We're just writing about it. It's not good or bad, it's just a thing."
Hetfield also revealed that he could relate to the character in the song because of his difficult childhood. He said that he often felt like a "prisoner in his own body," with no means to escape. His father left when he was 13, and his mother died a few years later.

DEFECTO is Denmark’s newest and finest addition to melodic and progressive metal, featuring huge catchy choruses, massive riffs, blazing solos and grandiose symphonies with a modern feel. Being spotted by Grammy award-winning producer Flemming Rasmussen (METALLICA), DEFECTO is, without doubt, the most promising addition to the Danish metal scene since VOLBEAT.
The band's second album "Nemesis" was released on December 1st, 2017. Although they are a relative newcomer to the scene with only 2 albums under their belt, the band already boasts an impressive CV: doing sold out tours in Denmark, touring around Europe, playing at prestigious festivals such as COPENHELL and supporting giants such as METALLICA and RAMMSTEIN.
DEFECTO was formed in 2011 in Copenhagen when singer, guitarist and frontman Nicklas Sonne was approached by the legendary producer Flemming Rasmussen (METALLICA, BLIND GUARDIAN) after hearing Sonne’s music. Wanting to help Sonne record and release his material, they contacted lead guitarist Frederik Møller, as well as bass-player Thomas Bartholin and drummer Lars Jensen in order to create a band that could match Sonne’s unique potential.
Already from the beginning, DEFECTO’s brand of melodic and virtuoso metal was creating a buzz in the Danish metal scene. Released in 2012, their debut EP “Defecto” brought them into the attention of the Danish media, being named “Best Metal Band 2012” by Underground Music Awards.
The release of DEFECTO’s debut album “Excluded” in march 2016 was met with much attention and appraisal throughout the European metal scene, creating a dedicated following for the band and a considerable breakthrough especially in the Danish metal scene.
In December 2017, DEFECTO’s sophomore album “ Nemesis” was released to rave reviews from fans and press alike, both in Denmark and internationally. Following the release, DEFECTO’s signed with Swedish record label Black Lodge Records (IN FLAMES, SABATON, KATATONIA), on which "Nemesis" will be re-released in march 2018. Most recently, DEFECTO joined forces with German booking agency Dragon Productions (SONATA ARCTICA, VOLBEAT, D-A-D, DIZZY MIZZ LIZZY) who will henceforth be booking the band in Europe.
Already boasting an impressive CV, DEFECTO is definitely “one to watch”. 2018 also holds great promise for the band, featuring among many things a tour across Europe with renowned Andorran band PERSEFONE.

"Beautiful Broken" is the sixteenth studio album by the American rock band HEART, released on July 8, 2016 through Concord Music Group. It is a mixture of new songs and re-interpretations of music from their earlier albums.
The title tune, a reworking of a bonus track from 2012’s "Fanatic". It's a duet between Ann Wilson and METALLICAs James Hetfield, gnarly mustard guitars, catchy melody, check it out below.

Norwegian rockers KVELERTAK have released the official music video for "Bronsegud", from their new LP, "Nattesferd".
KVELERTAK has been announced as special guests for the entirety of METALLICA's upcoming "WorldWired" European tour. Dates are set to kick off September 4 at The Netherlands' Ziggo Dome and continue through May 2018, see all the dates below.
Recently profiled by Vice's Noisey Shreds, KVELERTAK took home its third Spellemann award (Norway's Grammy equivalent) earlier this year for "Nattesferd". Recorded live in Oslo, Norway's Amper Tone Studio, the abum was produced by KVELERTAK and mixed/engineered by Nick Terry (LINDSTRØM, TURBONEGRO, THE LIBERTINES). It was the first KVELERTAK LP to be recorded in Norway.

Today it's time again for the annual hard rock evening that is always on eve of Twelfth Night, but during some travel problems the evening got moved forward 1 day, thanks guys. As always it's with some great excitement to hear what the other participants have made up for this event and see what others thinks of my view of things :) This is something I am looking forward to every year, it's really great to hang with some good friends, drink beer and listen to music, what else could be better. Even if this evening will be kinda laid back for me, as I have a gig tomorrow that I need to do pretty sober :)
So around next week I will play a few tunes from the night mixed with the stuff that I had on my tape.
One thing that I almost certain that will be played during this evening is a tune from METALLICAs latest album "Hardwired...To Self-Destruct" so why not pick a highlight from it to kick of this evening.
