"Bewitched" is a tune by the Swedish doom metal band CANDLEMASS. It's taken from the second studio album "Nightfall", released on 9 November 1987 through Axis Records. After being dropped from the label Black Dragon Records, CANDLEMASS were the first band signed to Axis. The group had a new line-up from their previous album including vocalist Messiah Marcolin, whose decisions became instrumental during the production and release stages of the album.
Two singles were released from "Nightfall": "Samarithan" and "At the Gallows End". A music video was directed for the song "Bewitched" by Jonas Åkerlund. The album has been re-released in various formats and was followed up by "Ancient Dreams" in 1988.
"Bewitched" was the first music video by Åkerlund, who was previously a member of the Swedish black metal group BATHORY. Åkerlund would go on to make music videos for other Swedish bands like Whale and ROXETTE, as well as international musicians such as METALLICA, U2 and Lady Gaga. The music video also featured future MAYHEM vocalist Pelle "Dead" Ohlin.
SKYBLOOD is a side project of Mats Levén, a man with a voice that has a resume that you don't joke with anyway. He is no stranger to the heavy metal scene, Mats Levén has fronted many, to name a few like SWEDISH EROTICA, Yngwie Malmsteen, KRUX, AT VANCE and THERION and more recently he fronted CANDLEMASS. Mats Levén was the guy that in my ears made them all interesting, his vocal performance has been totally magic over the years.
Since his departure from CANDLEMASS, he has continued work on his solo project SKYBLOOD and now his alter ego and solo operation is here with the
eponymously titled album.
"Skyblood" is an interesting piece of music. It's not really what I expected to be, as you get used to hearing someone sing over a long time, you become comfortable in how things should be and sound like, somewhere around there the expectations are. When it does not sound like you expect, you become uncomfortable, almost in a negative way. The first impression means a lot of how the outcome should be reviewed. After the first lap I wondered if I had put on the right record, this doesn't sound like Mats. The music rocked, the vocals are great but it sounds like somebody else. Somehow I got stuck to that, lay the record to the side until the next day came. Here did I prepare my self with a great cup of coffee, clean the ears and put on the Sennheiser headphones, with a steady grip I put the needle to the record, sank into the couch. So don't give up after the first spin, let it loose more the one time and you will be rewarded.
The intro "Skyblood Manifesto" opens up the album like a marionette theatre until the industrial screamy noise starts up "The Voice",
a fast-paced rocker until Levén opens his voice and the first dramatic tone is out, hell yeah this is Levén and nobody else. Yes, he partly sounds like an offspring of David Bowie and Geoff Tate, the music has a STRAPPING YOUNG LAD vibe over it, but I like it. This is followed up with the killer tune "The Not Forgotten", a heavy and straightforward rocker with a grim punch and a catchy chorus.
That Levén can sing is no doubt about it and that this album fingers a little here and there with all the different genres makes it very interesting to listen to. Like when he reaches up in the higher register like tunes "One Eye For An Eye" and "Wake Up To The Truth" or the groovy "For Or Against" to the smooth start of "Once Invisible" gives the wink of a ballad, but this grows heavier along the way, great dark riffing with a great melody. "Out Of The Hollow" half pace beauty, with a light mid-eastern touch, slightly doomy with a Bowie-like vocal. "Le Venimeux" is an epic album closer, hit the 10 minutes mark, pianos and acoustic guitars along with a flute are the main instruments around Levén’s gloomy vocals, the tune flows slow and beautiful until the sky opens up into a massive soundscape with the rest of the rhythm section. And there is simply no denying the overwhelming charm and class of the whole thing. Time for one of modern metal's unsung heroes to step into the spotlight.
"Skyblood" is Levén’s solo album all the way, besides singing and play both guitar and keys, he has written all the tunes produced the record at his own studio, the Uzi G Studio in Stockholm. As he is a well know singer he has the advantage to call up a few friends to help out. Among the guest musicians are Martin "Axe" Axenrot (BLOODBATH, OPETH, WITCHERY), Marcus Jidell (AVATARIUM), Nalley Påhlsson (TREAT, THERION), Snowy Shaw (ex-KING DIAMOND) and Petter Karlsson (ex-THERION). According to Mats, Skyblood is who he is. This is Skyblood. Skyblood equals pride, empathy, and rage.
Sum: SKYBLOOD is something you need.
Today's tune "The Not Forgotten" is taken from the self-titled album with SKYBLOOD, released November 22nd, 2019, enjoy!
New week, time to introduce the "Record Of The Week".
"The Door To Doom" the latest and twelfth studio album from legendary Swedish doom heavyweights CANDLEMASS and for the first time in 22 years, original vocalist Johan Länqvist (who left the band after singing on the legendary 1986 debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus) reunited to bring their next unholy preachment with big steps and invites BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi to make a guest appearance on one track. Even if I just got used to hearing the voice of Mats Levén on a CANDLEMASS tune, wonder what happened to him, anyway it's great that they have convinced Johan to get back again and he does a great job with the singing duties on the album. His vocals have hard rock, bluesy sound that gives the tunes another layout that we have got used the last decade. The singers have been changed quite often during their carrier but the main band has been consistent since 2004. Consists of the main man Leif Edling on bass, Mats Björkman and Lars Johannsen on guitar and Jan Lindh on drums.
"The Door To Doom" consists of eight tunes spread over forty-eight minutes of play time. The music picks up right where the band left off last time, doomish mid-pacing riffing along with heavy atmosphere where they hail the demon with an unholy sermon, the guitar solos are amazing and they keep a great groove in the tunes with menacing melodies and crawling tempos. The sound quality is superb, could be the best I have heard with the band. 'Good Morning Demon Majesty' is the first lyrics in the album opener, the driving character "Splendor Demon Majesty", a groovy piece with a catchy chorus, heavy riffing, great solo. The tune follows up by a grand riffing of "Under The Ocean", opens up gently and soft before it burst out like a wild volcano. In the next one in line "Astorolus – The Great Octopus” that features an amazing guitar solo by the guest appearance Tony Iommi. Here we get one of the highlights on the album, a powerful doomish piece with an astonishing guitar solo. This follows up with a sorrowful and moody "Bridge Of The Blind", a soft and beautiful piece with very sensitive and touching vocals by Johan, an emotional guitar solo by Lars. "Death's Wheel" is a heavy and catchy musical tune, bombastic drum beat and wild guitar rhythm. A tune that follows the same recipe is the crusher "House Of Doom", the first tune out of this album, back then with Mats Levén, now with Johan doing the vocal duties. The tune also has a cool church organ solo in the middle part that gives the tune the little extra. "Black Trinity" is another heavy piece, the creepy atmosphere in the riffing gives the tune a darker and demonish pallet for Johan to work with. Wonder if Tony Iommi was here as well, the solo is brilliant. The album closes with the epic "The Omega Circle", a superb tune that shows that Johan hasn't aged a year since his last performance. The tune is greatly balanced with all the involved and let them perform at their top and gives the tune good variations of moody and powerful heavy doom. A giant ends this album.
Well done lads and I really hope that you work together and gives more music to love in the future. All I want to do I start all over again.
I was lucky to see them live a week a ago when they performed at the Globe as the support act for GHOST. They did a great performance and sounded really good live. But if they do a show as a headliner at a smaller place here in Stockholm I certainly will go.
Sum: "The Door To Doom", epic world class doom metal that relies on slow mammoth riffing might have released the doom album of the year? Well for god sake, don't miss this one.
Today's tune "Astorolus - The Great Octopus" is taken from the album "The Door to Doom", released on February 22, 2019, Napalm Records.
Category 3: "Best Right Now" time to see what's got played during the "Hardrock Evening" that when off at the Twelfth Night, 5th of January. 1. A Band That Should Have Been Bigger: 2. Highfaluting: 3. Best Right Now:

6. It Swings:
7. After Party: 8. Bonus:
"Best Right Now", could be the best category to pick tunes to, here you get a chance to show off :) Or at least play something that you really like and would love to share with your pals. This category tends to be really sprawling, some find the most obscure tune, were others play their nr 1 of the year. Really fun category. My choice for the evening was a pretty late call, got a tip from my friend Linus at Soundpollution Record store, this was in the middle of December and I got hooked right on the spot, even got lost in my search for something interesting to buy...haha. My tune for the evening was the Cologne, German-based Death Metal band CHAPEL OF DISEASE with the track "Void Of Words". A band that really plays the pants off anyone, great mixture of Progressive Death Metal, Rock 'n Roll, Blues and Metal, Check it up.
The others line up:
TRIBULATION "Nightbound" - Hellan (Perfect tune from the best album 2018)
THRON "Dead Souls" - Sandström (Massive tune, great choice)
CANDLEMASS "The Omega Circle" - Chief Rebel (Excellent CANDLEMASS tune)
BLOODBATH "Bloodicide"- Holm (Good Choice)
HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY "Fire Walk With Me"- M Öbrink (Wow, another superb tune)
PARADISE LOST "Small Town Boy" - Eriksdotter (Excellent tune, but she got a yellowcard, as this tune have already been played before.)
BAEST "Crosswhore" (Never heard this one before, heavy tune)
AMORPHIS "Wrong Direction" - Jens (Great pick from Jens, AMORPHIS one more time.)
CHAPEL OF DISEASE "Void Of Words" - Stones
"The Omega Circle" is a choice picked by Chief, an excellent tune with the epicus singer Johan Langquist is back after a 32 year hiatus replacing Mats Levén who’s been with the band since 2012.
He sounds even better than before, wow. Enjoy.

Swedish doom metal legends CANDLEMASS are back with an online game and a brand new soundtrack called "House Of Doom".
It only takes a few riffs of the tune to set the familiar CANDLEMASS in order. It's great to hear that they still want to create some music. And yes, the king is back behind the axe of doom aka Leif Edling.
The Swedish pioneers once again to manage to create some epic doom metal on the EP "House Of Doom", and yes a full length is in the pipeline. The Ep is set to be released on physical format May 25.
Today's tune "House Of Doom" is a five-reel video slot with 10 fixed pay lines. It is a volatile game with a high payout. The tune was written by Edling, produced by Marcus Jidell, mixed by David Castillo and mastered by Maor Appelbaum.
Monday, New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"
Swedish metallers AVATARIUM, fronted by Jennie-Ann Smith, have launched their third full-length opus titled "Hurricanes and Halos".
Founded back in 2012’s by CANDLEMASS mainman and bassist Leif Edling and SOEN guitarist Marcus Jidell, AVATARIUM completed their line-up with keyboardist Carl Westholm, known for his work with CARPTREE, KRUX and JUPITER SOCIETY and drummer Lars Sköld of TIAMAT, beside already mentioned Jennie-Ann Smith, Edling still continues his influence as mentor and creative force, and has written six of the eight new tracks. However, this time Jennie-Ann and Marcus were also strongly involved in the songwriting process, and with the new bass master Mats Rydström.
"Hurricanes and Halos" is a bluesy, 70s influenced quasi-doom rock monster. The album fires off with the killing tune "Into the Fire – Into the Storm", where a powerful voice together with a great guitar work with masterful solos and a hammond organ that makes you weak in every single bone in your body. "The Starless Sleep" (today's tune) is an amazing tune, with superb vocals and a melody that have an convincing catchiness that easily could be a big radio hit in the future. "Road to Jerusalem" is a folksy half pace tune, amazing strumming guitar-work and beautiful vocals. The nine-minute epic "Medusa’s Child" is far out piece with kids sing-alongs, creepy weirdness, shifts between heavy and melodic and progressive old school. Next masterpiece is the "The Sky at the Bottom of the Sea" where the typical Edling trade mark make it's appearance along with psychedelic DEEP PURPLE organs, groovy and very powerful and the vocals make you vibrate of happiness. "When Breath Turns to Air" is a slow thing, a beautiful ballad. "A Kiss (From the End of the World)" is a another great tune with guitars that will flip you over and astonishing Jennie-Ann, it’s remarkably how she with that kind of ease adapts to the overall mood of the songs on the album. The record wraps up melancholy and elegant with the instrumental piece of the title track "Hurricanes and Halos".
Summary: "Hurricanes and Halos" is a very joyful and elegant album, classic, epic and powerful!
Today's tune "The Starless Sleep", second single/video release from "Hurricanes and Halos", enjoy!
The Swedish Doom Metal band AVATARIUM have released the first tune ”Into the Fire/Into the Storm” the first taste from the upcoming "Hurricanes And Halos". Vintage blues rock and modern doom, beauty and darkness, heavy guitars and fragile ballads that's the sound of Stockholm’s AVATARIUM.
Asked about the album title "Hurricanes And Halos", Jidell contemplates:
“In times like these we are constantly reminded how power enables people to do evil in the name of a good cause. Whether there are religious, political or cultural overtones, their goal is always to manipulate and create fear in our hearts”.
Although the key tone of this third full-length release is amazingly catchy with earworms such as the ‘The Starless Sleep’ or ‘The Sky At The Bottom Of The Sea’, the band still relies on a crushing doom atmosphere with a ghostly vibe. Eternal longing and bizarre little snapshot moments like in ‘A Kiss From The End Of The World’ define the lyrics, but it’s the ballad ‘When Breath Turns Into Air’ that has a particularly deep meaning to Marcus and is dedicated to his deceased father:
“My father was the one that no matter what circumstances, never lost hope or faith in me. Growing up in a family where things were quite turbulent at times, he enabled a safe attachment. He was a very gentle and warm-hearted man and I will always miss him. The song is about loss but also about how someone’s spirit can stay with you even though their physical remains are gone.”
The new album was produced by Marcus Jidell himself, while David Castillo (KATATONIA, BLOODBATH, OPETH) recorded and mixed it in the famous Ghost Ward Studios and the mastering was done by Jens Bogren (SOILWORK, SEPULTURA). Together they created an organic and warm sound that sets "Hurricanes and Halos" apart from the overbred, electronically optimized mass:
”A big and fat sound is what we like and we do whatever it takes to get there! AVATARIUM is about pushing boundaries and exploring new grounds”, states string wizard Marcus Jidell and continuous: ”Our focus is not on technical aspects but on landscapes and colours. Diverse emotions, anxieties, defenses and human conditions all find their place in our music. We are aiming to find the human touch, to keep it simple, allow mistakes but also to make it glorious, shining and greater than our own selves.”
The bands master mind Leif Edling is behind 6 of the songs, the rest is made by the singer Jennie-Ann Smith and guitarist Marcus Jidell. The cover is created by Erik Rovanpera and is inspired of the tune "Medusa Child".
Today's tune "Into the Fire/Into the Storm", taken from the upcoming 3:rd studio album "Hurricanes and Halos", set to be release on May 26.
The Female-Fronted OCEANS OF SLUMBER Take CANDLEMASS's "Solitude" And Make It Totally Their Own. I mean they absolutely deliver on this phenomenal cover. With the amazing Vocalist Cammie Gilbert behind the microphone, she delivers a soulful performance, it's deep and heavy, a real heart breaker that gives the tune an excellent and unforgettable trip.
On February 1st OCEANS OF SLUMBER self-released a progressive metal whirlwind called Aetherial. Labeling a band like OCEANS OF SLUMBER is never quite as easy as one would think. The Houston band features in its ranks the drummer of grind purists INSECT WARFARE (among many others), a degreed Jazz guitarist, and an all-around cast of “players’ players.” What results from this collective of skilled musicians and a broad cross section of influence is the adventurous Aetherial. Musical classification is of no interest to the band however. Instead, OCEANS OF SLUMBER create waves of stimulating atmosphere and use their talents to exploit the dynamics of the music, thereby creating the undeniably epic wall of sound that has become the Texans’ trademark. The person responsible for the mixing and mastering of Aetherial, UK madman Russ Russell (NAPALM DEATH, DIMMU BORGIR, EVILE, etc.) OCEANS OF SLUMBER are as comfortable drudging their way through doom-laden epic "Coffins Like Kites" as they are playing the caustic, country-tinged black metal of "Primordial," as well as shifting gears seamlessly into the soaring melodies of the KING CRIMSON inspired "Blackest Cloud" only to return to the sonic brutality that is the title track. Interpretation remains the province of the listener. With the intention of crossing every musical boundary, OCEANS OF SLUMBER creates an undeniable atmosphere of beauty and extremity with its very capable lineup of musicians.
Today's tune "Solitude" taken from OCEANS OF SLUMBER "Blue" EP. Tracked live at Origin Sound with Craig Douglas at the helm.
Today it's time to present category two (Best 80's) from the annual hard rock evening that is always on eve of Twelfth Night.
To follow up the theme and the red thread for this years record I decided to choose the most logical band and tune to follow up on the tough start I had chosen. So the choice was simply Swedish epic doom metal band "Candlemass". "A pillar of classic '80s metal" and the tune includes one of the strongest, most consistent songwriting of the band's career".
Candlemass is an influential established in Stockholm 1984 by bassist, songwriter and bandleader Leif Edling and the drummer, Matz Ekström. After releasing five full-length albums and touring extensively throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Candlemass disbanded in 1994, but reunited three years later. After breaking up again in 2002, Candlemass reformed in 2004 and have continued to record and perform since then. Candlemass is also the seventh best selling artist coming out from Sweden selling as of 2010 more than 15 million albums worldwide.
This years line up of categories was:
1. Best 70's - Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
2. Best 80's - Candlemass - Solitude
3. Best 90's
4. Best 00's
5. Best 10's

Todays tune "Solitude" taken from "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus", is the debut album of the Swedish doom metal band Candlemass. It was released June 10, 1986 on Black Dragon Records. On its release, the album had a significantly different sound than other European heavy metal bands of the time, because of their use of operatic vocals mixed over slow and heavy guitar riffs. The album did not sell well on its initial release, which led to the group being dropped from the label during the same year. Since then, the album has been re-issued in several different formats. The album title Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is a Dog Latin rendering of Epic Doom Metal — the genre which the band pioneered and is most commonly identified.
Hailing from Stockholm, gloomy metal outfit Avatarium was founded in late 2012. Following the success of their eponymous debut, out on November 01st, 2013 and the first ever single "Moonhorse", released September 20th of the same year, Avatarium have just announced the release of their new EP ‘All I Want’. The vinyl/digital only EP will be out November 14th, 2014 via Nuclear Blast.
Mid 2013, just eight months within the bands’ history, the word was spreading rapidly about their special blend of heavy adventurous music: Influenced by the likes of Jethro Tull, Blue Öyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, adding the peaks of pop and 60’s vibes, Avatarium deliver some delicate moments of beauty and frailness rarely to be found in a band these days.
Avatarium have launched a lyric video for the title track from their upcoming EP "All I Want". I
The band are led by Candlemass bassist Leif Edling, and also feature frontwoman Jennie-Ann Smith, guitarist Marcus Jidell (Royal Hunt, Evergrey), drummer Lars Sköld (Tiamat) and keyboardist Carl Westholm.
The old spirit comes even more alive, with psychedelic percussionist Michael Blair, who has worked with Tom Waits and Lou Reed, among others, guesting on "All I Want".
Commented Marcus Jidell: "[Michael] showed up at the studio with a big 'bag of tricks' with metals, crashers, shakers and a lot of strange things which he made sound like if you throw in a punkrocker at Woodstock and feed him with psychedelic pills!" About the new songs, he adds: "We tried to keep things simple and spontaneous during the recordings, something I hope people will be able to hear. Also, I think that Jennie-Ann Smith has reached new levels with the way she sings on both of the new songs!"
The three live songs were recorded at the 2014 edition of renowned Roadburn festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands, which was the second ever Avatarium show and the first one outside of Sweden.
Due to his health condition, Edling was unable to perform with Avatarium at some of the band's most recent gigs. Filling in for him once again was Anders Iwers from Tiamat.
Percussionist Michael Blair guests on the EP and Jidell previously said his contribution helped them break new musical ground. He said: "Michael showed up at the studio with a big bag of tricks, with metals, crashers, shakers and a lot of strange things. He made sound like if you throw in a punk rocker at Woodstock and feed him with psychedelic pills!
The sixth track on this year's disc is a beautifully balanced blend of lush melody and heavy riffs, where doom rock gets a new side by a feminine beauty of the talented singer Jennie Ann Smith. Avatarium is the new project by Leif Edling.
Todays tune "Boneflower" is a real facemelter where the crushing doom of Candlemass mixes up with the 60/70's feel with a creepy and haunting vibe that will hunt you forever!
Number 6 on Tune Of The Days best album list of year 2013 is Leif Edling's new project Avatarium and the selftitled album.
It is a beautifully balanced blend of lush melodies and heavy riffs, where doom rock gets a new side by a feminine beauty of the talented singer Jennie Ann Smith.
The crushing doom of Candlemass may be prevalent through the album, but Avatarium’s 60s / 70s feel is also trippy, with a creepy and haunting vibe that makes space for moments of beautiful tranquility before pummeling you with surgically precise riffs of sheer Edling brilliance.
Foremost among Avatarium’s not so secret weapons are the haunting vocals of Jennie-Ann Smith — they infuse the introspective, quiet passages with goosebump-inducing emotional power, and propel the heavier moments into a cathartic juggernaut of inspired doom intensity.

A new week, a new month (September), although it is the ninth today, it's September, the month when it was time again to shake life in Record Of The Week.
This week is dedicated to a Swedish doom metal band called Candlemass and their third album "Ancient Dreams" was released in 1988, and reissued in 2001 by Powerline Records with bonus CD.
The cover art of the album is a painting made by Thomas Cole, second in his series, "The Voyage of Life", entitled "Youth".
The track "Black Sabbath Medley" is a CD bonus track and is composed of parts of songs from Black Sabbath, namely: "Symptom of the Universe", "Sweet Leaf", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Into the Void", "Electric Funeral", "Supernaut", "Black Sabbath".
Candlemass are legendary, alongside groups such as Witchfinder General, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Trouble, and Pagan Altar, had a big hand in helping to pioneer the use of sludgy, Black Sabbath inspired riffs and slow tempo intensity that would characterise the musical subgenre known as doom metal.
In many ways Ancient Dreams feels like an typical follow up or an extension of Nightfall, from the use of another Thomas Cole painting on the front cover to the uncannily similar approach to songwriting. Edling does all the writing on the album and his approach is to oppress the listener with so as much heaviness that it’s possible. Messiah Marcolin is the man who does the vocal duty. He give these songs some real passion that now one else could. The guitarists hands out some really cool riffs and some of the best solos of the band’s existence. This album is full of brilliant songs. Overall it's quite engaging from start to finish with the great mix in formulaic tone.
If you like heavy tunes like Black Sabbath, as I do, then this is a must have in the record shelf.
Todays tune "Mirror Mirror" is the first track on the album "Ancient Dreams".
Feel the presence, the voice of the dark
Break the balance, intrudes your mind
Try to deny, oh master of fools
Captured forever, the loser learns the rules
