Metallica - One

Sunday, time for a classic.

METALLICA is in town for two sold-out events at Ericsson Globe here in Stockholm. The first show was yesterday and next one is tomorrow and I will get the opportunity to be there to watch them once again.

So today we pick a classic from them. "One" is a song by American heavy metal band METALLICA. It was released as the third and final single from their fourth studio album, "...And Justice for All" (1988). Written by band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, "One" is an anti-war song that portrays a World War I soldier who is severely wounded - arms and legs blown off by an artillery shell, blind and unable to speak or move - begging God to take his life as he feels constant pain. His only hope is to devise a way to communicate with the hospital staff. In the music video, he jolts in the hospital bed, spelling "Kill me" in Morse code. Production of the song was done by the band alongside Flemming Rasmussen.

A video for the song was introduced in January 1989 on MTV. Shot in black and white by director Michael Salomon, the video's story is intercut with scenes taken from the 1971 anti-war film Johnny Got His Gun. Due to routinely being required to pay royalty fees to continue showing the music video, Metallica bought the rights to the film. The video was ranked at number one on MTV soon after its introduction.

METALLICA performed "One" for the 31st Annual Grammy Awards show broadcast from Los Angeles in 1989. The next year, the song won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, the first ever win in that category. The band also performed the song alongside pianist Lang Lang at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards in 2014. The song is one of the band's most popular pieces and has remained a live staple since the release of the album, making this the most played song from "...And Justice for All".

For the first 17 seconds of the song, there are a series of sound effects with a battle theme, an artillery barrage and helicopter are heard and continues slightly over a clean tone guitar intro by Hetfield before Kirk Hammett comes in over the top with a clean-toned solo. Ulrich's drums come in and continue until each chorus when the guitars become heavy and distorted before returning to clean. There is a second solo by Hammett halfway through the song, before lyrics cut out and the song gradually gets more heavy and distorted until the "machine gun" guitar build up (played alongside double bass drums) before the next, often highly praised, guitar solo by Hammett, and a final dual solo by Hammett and Hetfield. The song begins in 4/4 time, and later 3/4 as well as 2/4.

In 1991, James Hetfield told Guitar World that he wrote the song's opening B-G chord change (miscalling it a 'modulation') based on an idea prompted by the VENOM song "Buried Alive" from their second studio album, Black Metal.

“ I had been fiddling around with that B-G modulation for a long time. The idea for the opening came from a Venom song called "Buried Alive". The kick drum machine-gun part near the end wasn't written with the war lyrics in mind, it just came out that way. We started that album with Mike Clink as producer. He didn't work out so well, so we got Flemming to come over and save our asses. ”

The song starts off in a soft melodic setting, but it develops through multiple sections into heavier and faster speed metal sounds, leading up to a technically complex tapping solo by Kirk Hammett, and a dual guitar section by Hammett and James Hetfield.

The song is based on the idea of a soldier losing all of his limbs and being unable to hear, speak, or see, set to a World War I backdrop. In an interview in New Zealand in 1989, Ulrich describes the movie Johnny Got His Gun as having a similar theme, and this was the reason it was incorporated into the video.

"One" was the first Metallica song for which a music video was created. The music video, directed by Bill Pope and Michael Salomon, debuted on MTV on January 20, 1989. The video, shot in Long Beach, California, is almost entirely in black and white and features the band performing the song in a warehouse. It features dialogue and several scenes from the 1971 film adaptation of Johnny Got His Gun. Timothy Bottoms can be seen starring as Joe Bonham, the main character in the novel (written by Dalton Trumbo and published in September 1939; the basis for the 1971 film).

Three versions of the "One" music video were made; the first (the longest, album version) contained scenes of both the band and scenes from the movie. The second was simply a shortened version of the first, and the third, often known as the "jammin' version", lacked scenes from the movie (the song and video fade at the last bridge in the third version).

Like many other music videos from METALLICA, "One" puts great emphasis on the performances of the band members as musicians, with many shots of Hetfield, Newsted and Hammett's hands picking and fretting. The video features the band members in a typical early METALLICA fashion: playing (as if in rehearsal) in some sort of warehouse, in tight formation around Ulrich's drum kit, and dressed in casual street clothes and with long untamed hair.

In the music video, it can be clearly seen that both Hetfield and Hammett are playing ESP guitars; Jason Newsted is on a 5-string Wal bass. It is also clear that Newsted is playing bass with his fingers at the start of the song but later switches to a pick.

Two of the three versions of the "One" music video appear on 2 of One, a VHS released on July 1, 1990 and both would again be featured on the band's 2006 music video compilation DVD.

"One" is a favorite of many METALLICA fans, and therefore is a fixture of the band's live performances. When played live, the song is usually played with guitars tuned down by one semitone (a permanent fixture of their studio and live work since the post METALLICA era, save for "Death Magnetic" in the case of the former) and is preceded by pyrotechnics and the same sounds of war such as machine guns, and bombs exploding as heard on the recorded version. The song also features heavy strobe lighting during the heavier half of the song, namely before the Hammett solo.

When METALLICA appeared on The Howard Stern Show in September 2013, James Hetfield explained that this was not so much an anti-war song as an observation. "War is a part of man," he explained. "We're just writing about it. It's not good or bad, it's just a thing."

Hetfield also revealed that he could relate to the character in the song because of his difficult childhood. He said that he often felt like a "prisoner in his own body," with no means to escape. His father left when he was 13, and his mother died a few years later.

Enjoy today's tune and hope to see you at the show tomorrow :)

U2 - Song For Someone

When a concert is cancelled, breaks usually a charge of slight confusion. Chaos is the most common notice in the newspaper.

Yesterday's U2 concert got cancelled for security reasons. Live Nation has issued the following press release;

Due to a security issue, did The Globe have to evacuated during the evening and on the advice of the police, we have no choice but to move the concert to the new date. Yesterday's concert by U2 moved thereby to today (Tuesday 22 September). All tickets to Yesterday's concert are valid for the concert on today (Tuesday).

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope for understanding from fans. Safety is our top priority.

For questions about the moving concert, contact Live Nation. All ticket issues refer to AXS.

U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin. Formed in 1976, the group consists of Bono (vocals and guitar), the Edge (guitar, keyboards, and vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums and percussion). U2's early sound was rooted in post-punk but eventually grew to incorporate influences from many genres of popular music. Throughout the group's musical pursuits, they have maintained a sound built on melodic instrumentals. Their lyrics, often embellished with spiritual imagery, focus on personal themes and sociopolitical concerns.

The Innocence + Experience Tour (styled as iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE) is an ongoing worldwide concert tour by rock band U2. Staged in support of the band's 2014 album Songs of Innocence, the tour will visit arenas throughout 2015. It is U2's first time playing arenas since 2005–2006 on their Vertigo Tour. The Innocence + Experience Tour opened on 14 May 2015 in Vancouver, Canada, and will comprise two legs, one featuring concerts in North America from May through July, and a second featuring concerts in Europe from September through November. Shows were predominantly booked in pairs for each market, with a total of 76 concert dates scheduled.

Concerts are structured around a loose narrative of "innocence" passing into "experience", with a fixed set of songs for the first half of each show and a varying second half, separated by an intermission–a first for U2 concerts. The stage spans the length of the venue floor and is divided into three sections: a rectangular segment representing "innocence"; a smaller circular B-stage representing "experience"; and a connecting walkway to represent the transition between the two themes. A 96-foot-long double-sided video screen is suspended above and parallel to the walkway; the structure features an interior catwalk between the video screens, allowing the band members to perform amidst the video projections. For the tour, U2's sound system has been moved to the venue ceilings and arranged in an oval array in hopes of improving acoustics by evenly distributing sound throughout the arena.

According to Billboard, the North American leg of the tour grossed $76.2 million from 36 sold-out shows.

So lets play a tune with U2. Today's tune is from acclaimed director Vincent Haycock, Woody Harrelson and daughter Zoe star in a 7-minute short film for U2s "Song for Someone" from their thirteenth studio album Songs of Innocence.

LMFAO - Sexy and I Know It

The last dance act out for this time is the American electro pop duo LMFAO, that's consisting of rappers, producers, dancers, and DJs Redfoo (Stefan Kendal Gordy, born September 3, 1975) and his nephew SkyBlu (Skyler Austen Gordy, born August 23, 1986). The group formed in 2006 in Los Angeles, California. RedFoo is also the son of music mogul Berry Gordy, and SkyBlu is his grandson. Their music incorporates a theme of partying and drinking, and the group commonly refers to their music style as "party rock". The group's name is an Internet slang abbreviation for "Laughing My Fucking Ass Off".

The whole show felt like a giant parody of the music business, alot of humor involed with sex. Dancers, inflatable toys and heavy beats was the main thing.

Todays tune "Sexy and I Know It" is a tune taken from their second studio album, Sorry for Party Rocking. It was released as the third single from the album on September 16, 2011. The song was written by Stefan Kendal Gordy, GoonRock, Erin Beck, George M. Robertson and Kenneth Oliver, and it was produced by Party Rock.

A side note:

During yesterday's dance night at the Globe, in which Avicii played, it happened a little accident, the supplementary expansion that was built out exclusively for this gig. During the show, did a part of the floor collapsed and some 30 guests fell through. Thetania was in place, though the building next to in which Justice played, but passed just before this happened and took a picture of misery, more info about Avicii and Justice will come later in the Tune Of The Day.

Rammstein - Mein Land

Rammstein is a German Industrial Metal band from Berlin, formed in 1994.The band consists of members Till Lindemann (lead vocals), Richard Z. Kruspe (lead guitar and backing vocals), Paul H. Landers (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Oliver "Ollie" Riedel (bass guitar), Christoph "Doom" Schneider (drums and electronic percussion) and Christian "Flake" Lorenz (keyboards). They are widely accepted as part of the Neue Deutsche Härte scene (alongside others such as Oomph!, Eisbrecher, and Die Krupps) and they are the genre's most successful band, achieving worldwide fame. Their songs are usually in German, but they have also performed songs entirely or partially in other languages such as English, Spanish, French and Russian. As of 2009, they have sold over 15 million records worldwide. Rammstein's live shows are famous for their pyrotechnic performance and theatrics, earning them awards from many countries, including The United States of America. Since their formation in 1994, Rammstein has had no changes in their band line-up nor have any members left the band. The band have stated they were not named after the Ramstein airshow disaster.

A full European tour in support of Made in Germany has been confirmed that will span from November 2011 to March 2012, as well as a North American tour that will span from April–May 2012. The Swedish industrial band Deathstars will be the support band during the first leg of the European tour.

Rammstein have achieved particular fame for their hugely over-the-top stage show, using so many pyrotechnics that fans eventually coined the motto "Other bands play, Rammstein burns!" (a quip at Manowar's song "Kings of Metal", which states, "other bands play, Manowar kills"). After an accident in the Arena in Berlin where some burning decoration parts fell (27 September 1996) the band used professionals to handle the pyrotechnics; Lindemann is now a licensed pyrotechnician who spends entire songs engulfed head-to-toe in flames. He has suffered multiple burns on his ears, hair and arms.

The heat is so intense that on occasion, people have been carried out of Rammstein concerts suffering from heat exhaustion and lighting gantries have been seen glowing red-hot from repeated fireball hits. Nobody was carried out during this show as far as i am aware. The variety of the pyrotechnics can be seen in a recent concert playlist, which includes such items as "Lycopodium Masks", "Glitterburst Truss", "Pyrostrobes", "Comets", "Flash Trays" and "Mortar Hits".

Even this time Rammstein delivered a spectacular show, a great band to see live, i must if you dig a heavy burning show.

Deathstars - Metal

Deathstars is a Swedish band from Stockholm that perform industrial and gothic metal. Formed in 2000, the group are noted for their dark horror-themed lyrics, pessimistic and misanthropic social commentary, distinctive trademark face paint, dark stage uniforms and physical appearances that correspond to gothic fashion. They have released three full-length studio albums; Synthetic Generation (2002 in Europe and 2003 in North and South America), Termination Bliss (2006) and Night Electric Night (2009). Deathstars have supported live acts by bands such as Korn and Cradle of Filth, the latter band which was in part inspiration for Deathstars. Deathstars is supporting Rammstein on their Made In Germany 1995-2011 tour. And last week they did play at a sold out "The Globe" here in Stockholm.

The guys in the band seemed to be in really good mood, good to play at home, I think, and it was evident once they got up on stage, good gig.

The current lineup of the band consists primarily of members from Swordmaster, a black metal project that has former members of Dissection, and Ophthalamia. The band currently consists of Whiplasher Bernadotte (lead vocals), Nightmare Industries (guitar and keyboards), Skinny Disco (bass guitar, backing vocals), Vice (drums) and Cat Casino (guitar).

Here are some pictures from the gig, this time it's from Micke Sandström's lens!

Todays tune "Metal" is one of two brand new songs off Deathstars' best of compilation "The Greatest Hits On Earth".

Linkin Park - The Catalyst

Linkin Park is an American rock band from Agoura Hills, California. Formed in 1996, the band rose to international fame with their debut album, Hybrid Theory, which was certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2005 and multi-platinum in several other countries. Its following studio album, Meteora, continued the band's success, topping the Billboard 200 album chart in 2003, and was followed by extensive touring and charity work around the world.

Having adapted the nu metal and rap metal genres to a radio-friendly yet densely layered style in Hybrid Theory and Meteora, the band explored other genres in their next studio album, Minutes to Midnight, which was released in 2007. The band has collaborated with several other artists, most notably with rapper Jay-Z in their mashup EP Collision Course, and many others included on Reanimation. The band's most recent work, the concept album A Thousand Suns, was released on September 8, 2010. Linkin Park has sold over 50 million albums worldwide and has won two Grammy Awards.

Linkin Park is out touring in Europe with "Middle Class Rut” as support act and yesterday they did a stop at the Globe, this time both me and Thetania was there working. It was a long, very long day but i had kind fun afterall. Linkin Park's show is full of energy and joy, all singing along, though at times I do not recognize them when they step into the more dance-like adventure and stroboscope flashes more than usual.

Here is some pictures from the gig.

Todays tune "The Catalyst" is a the first single from their fourth studio album, A Thousand Suns, which was released on September 8, 2010. The music video for the song, directed by the band's turntablist Joe Hahn, was released on August 26, 2010. The album was written by the band and co-produced by Linkin Park vocalist Mike Shinoda and Rick Rubin, who previously worked together to produce Minutes to Midnight (2007).

A Thousand Suns is a concept album dealing with human fears such as nuclear warfare. "On this record, the concepts blend human ideas with technology [...] Human fears, your fear of what's going to happen in the world, the music kind of references that", said Mike Shinoda on an interview with MTV. The album's title comes from the Hindu Sanskrit scripture, the Bhagavad Gita: "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one," a quote made famous by J. Robert Oppenheimer in reference to the atomic bomb.
