Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla

Sunday time for a classic.

The time machine takes us back 46 years, on the 6 September, 1974 did 3 albums go released. Herbie Hancock's "Thrust", HAWKWIND's "Hall Of The Mountain Grill" and "Rocka Rolla" by JUDAS PRIEST, the later one if where we put today's focus on.

"Rocka Rolla" is the debut studio album by the British rock band JUDAS PRIEST, released on 6 September 1974 by Gull Records. It was produced by Rodger Bain, who had made a name for himself as the producer of BLACK SABBATH's first three albums. It is the only album to feature drummer John Hinch.

"Rocka Rolla" is also the debut single by JUDAS PRIEST, first released in August 1974, and later released as the title track of their first album the following month.

This song was played live on The Old Grey Whistle Test. The song has several short guitar solos played by guitarist Glenn Tipton, an outro solo by K. K. Downing, as well as a harmonica solo played by vocalist Rob Halford. During live performances, Tipton's backing vocals were sung significantly higher than Halford's. The song often closed the shows on their early tours and was extended into a lengthy jam.

The B-side to the single for Rocka Rolla was another song from the same album, "Never Satisfied", which was co-written by Al Atkins.

According to the band there were technical problems in the studio, resulting in poor sound quality and a hiss through the album. Guitarist Glenn Tipton had just joined when recording of "Rocka Rolla" began and did not contribute any songwriting except on the title track and "Run of the Mill". He did come up with the songs "Tyrant", "Epitaph", and "Ripper", but Bain considered them not commercial enough and rejected them. Bain also rejected the concert staple "Whiskey Woman" which later, with contributions from Tipton, morphed into "Victim of Changes". These songs were eventually all included on their next album, "Sad Wings Of Destiny". In addition, "Winter", "Deep Freeze" and "Winter Retreat" form a suite, but are listed as separate tracks and divided as such on the CD release.

Several of the songs on the album feature contributions from the band's previous frontman Al Atkins and had been regular parts of their live performances in Manchester, where the band had achieved a cult following during the previous few years. The track "Caviar and Meths" was originally a 14-minute effort penned by Atkins, Downing, and Hill but due to time constraints, only the intro was recorded for the album. A longer version of the song appears on Atkins's 1998 album "Victim Of Changes". Though not the full-length version, it is notably longer at seven minutes. That album also contains covers of "Winter" and "Never Satisfied".

At this point of the band's career, they had not yet developed their signature look of leather and studs. They had appeared on a British television programme called The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1975, performing "Rocka Rolla" and "Dreamer Deceiver", and their wardrobe was very "hippified" as journalist Malcolm Dome put it. This footage was included on the Electric Eye DVD. In addition, the album is more blues/hard rock oriented than their later releases, and also has some slight progressive rock influences that would continue through to Stained Class, but to a lesser extent, and would be abandoned in later releases. This makes the album's style virtually unrecognizable when compared with later PRIEST albums, although "Rocka Rolla" does feature dual guitars and "Run of the Mill" is the first song that was explicitly designed for Halford's, rather than Atkins', vocal range.

The album was released to very little reception selling "only a few thousand copies". Because it flopped, the band found themselves in dire financial straits. In particular, they talked of nights in which they were starving and didn't know when they were going to get their next meal. They tried to enter into an agreement with Gull Records to pay them 50 pounds a week, but Gull, which was also suffering economic woes, refused. In a retrospective review, AllMusic gave "Rocka Rolla" a rating of 2.5 out of five stars, and said that while it was a "sketchy and under focused debut", the album "definitely hints at JUDAS PRIEST's potential and originality".

1782 - She Was A Witch

In 1782 Anna Göldi was condemned, she was tortured and killed, this was the last witchcraft trial in Europe.

In December 2018, Marco Nieddu and Gabriele Fancellu have formed a Doom band called "1782" in honor of all the "witches" murdered by the bigoted minds of many generations.

On January 4th, the band entered in the studio to record the single "She Was A Witch", released by Electric Valley Records on the 17th of the same month. Within a few days the single turns out to be an excellent Doom piece, finding great interest, especially on social media and by listeners of the genre.

On February 8th, 1782, they enter the studio to record the homonymous debut album, on March 10th they sign for the Roman label Heavy Psych Sounds Records to release the album on May 24th 2019.

In this debut album, 1782 deal with macabre themes: from spells to ruthless torture, from the pleasure of sex to the most perfidious revenge.

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The Norwegian rockers TEMPEL released their self titled debut album on March 23, 2018. Yes it took time to find its way from Vestfold, Norway to Tyresö, Sweden, but it was worth it, as this is one hell of a debut. The album was mixed by Vegard Liverød & Bjarte Lund Rolland, mastered by Nick Terry.

TEMPEL was founded by three brothers, Inge Gjermundrød (bassist/vocalist), Kjetil Gjermundrød (drummer) and Espen Gjermundrød (guitarist) - along with their best friend Andreas Espolin Johnson (guitarist) to complete the band. They used a couple of years to develop their sound until 2018 when they released their debut album with a northern Europe tour doing support for KVELERTAKs sideshows while they were touring with METALLICA!

TEMPELs music is eclectic mix of all genres of the harder brand of rock, melodic and in the same time very brutal and delicate. Harsh vocal mixed with partly gentle singing. Shredded riffing on the twin guitars, meaty bass licks and tight drumming is the layout for a terrific playtime with TEMPEL.

The first thing that pops in the head after a spin on this album is of course KVELERTAK, the main band for the drummer Kjetil, when he doesn't play for TEMPEL.

The debut album opens up with the fast shredding rocker "Vendetta", harsh vocal in a melodic and trashy environment. In the following tunes "Wolves" and "Uninvited" are two really sweaty songs, the first one with a meaty and glamorous intro before it burst out to a furious hardcore, the second kicks on right on the spot and catches the breath a few times before they play the last note. "Afterlife" is a real killer, melodic rambling, shredding riffs that will glue into your forehead forever, screaming vocals and hunting choirs that cuts deep in your soul. "Confusion" is another melodic and riffy piece with nice choirs singing from the band members and not nearly as frantic vocals as the other tunes. "Forest Cemetery" starts neatly with the mouth harp, before it rhythm section takes over and shortly erupts to a riffy mayhem for approx one minute, then slows down to a melodic and instrumental path, slowly again is accelerate back to hit its peak. "Fortress", marching intro and memorable riffing, catchy and melodic. "Torches", starts with beautiful guitar play until the tune fires up into classic melody that is really nicely executed by the band. With a little slower pace with emotional and the album ending "Farewell", softer with gentle vocals until it blows away shortly into a scream of madness, the tune is featuring Benedicte Edvardsen from MOWLITH as guest vocalist

Greta Van Fleet - Anthem of the Peaceful Army

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Anthem of the Peaceful Army" is the debut studio album by American rock band GRETA VAN FLEET. The album was released on October 19, 2018, recorded at Blackbird Studios, Nashville, Tennessee and follows the band's original two EP releases, "Black Smoke Rising" and "From the Fires".

The two first EPs has been spinning a lot in my home, work, car, I do like what I hear. That the band have a big influence from LED ZEPPELIN can be heard on every single tune, bit's and pieces here and there, vocals, solos, clothes, lyrics that they almost would be a carbon copy of ZEPPELIN, but with their own way of doing it and with the new album "Anthem of the Peaceful Army", they begun to shift away from LED ZEPPELIN. Although this sounds a lot of ZEPPELIN, so be it. Some may think they've crossed the border, creating songs on ZEPPELIN, so be it. The fact that ZEPPELIN borrowed a lot from old heroes, even if things were snitched right of the table to create something to their own, that was ok, then this should also be ok as well. As I have ZEPPELIN as my musical-gods, I think it's with great fun when others try to create the same feeling they had even if it sounds similar, there are many examples of bands that have borrowed the sound of ZEPPELIN.

"Anthem of the Peaceful Army" is an Absolutely superb album! The album has many great tunes from the beautiful and grand half paced opener "Age Of Man", followed by the rocker "The Cold Wind" and the uptempo single "When The Curtain Falls". "Watching Over", have a classic hard rock touch, slow with tasty guitar licks. "Lover, Leaver" is another uptempo piece with a great feeling to the past to the more acoustic guitars driven tunes "You're The One" and "The New Day", the first one with a country feeling and the second with a blues one. More blues rock in "Mountain Of The Sun", with catchy guitar licks and powerful vocals to a more darker turn in "Brave New World", mournful guitars riffs and grievous vocals. The album closes "Anthem", a loveful ballad that touches your soul. That fantastic vocal, great guitar playing, tight rhythm section and the ZEPPELIN vide carry this album by these youngsters that overall kicking the mainstream ass with a pure rock album.

Sum: A Peaceful Army is a classic rocker that you shouldn't miss!

V**gra Boys - Street Worms

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Street Worms" is the debut album by the Swedish and Stockholm based garage punk band with uncontrolled horns. V**GRA BOYS (or V**gra Boys, as they’re referred to in spam filter-evading emails) have an anthem for that. "Street Worms" was released on Sept. 28 via YEAR0001.

The record was produced by Daniel Fagerström (SKULL DEFEKTS, CHRONIC HEIST) and Pelle Gunnerfeldt (FIRESIDE, THE HIVES).

"Street Worms" is a twisted jazzy post-punk story about worms, sports and sneaky things in the basement, makes the album a really fun ride, an album about illusions of realness, the absurdum of existence and the joke on humanity, where the music is like a matchmaker between NINE INCH NAILS with Iggy Pop behind the microphone and the electronic synth-poppers DEVO with SPARKS sprinkles on the top.

The album opens up with a sneaky husband that got fetish about latex thrills in "Down in the Basement", pulsing rhythms, horns and a finger pointing singer that demands the cheating husband to give his wife apology for his shabby way and grow into a real man. "Sports", is an absurd and hilarious parody a particularly American brand of masculinity. The tune is about "Sports" and different types of balls: Baseballs, Basketballs, Volleyballs Ping pong, Beachballs, and Wienerdogs all bounce around the song, emphasized with a relish bubble, a low pitched voice out of frontman Sebastian Murphy. Meanwhile, a mid-pace drum beat and a meaty bassline hold things in order along with a sexy guitar riff. "Best in Show" is a reference about dogs where Murphy barks out and then he gives the dog a snack in the guitar-driven tune "Shrimp Shack". The dark new wave of "Just Like You",  a thick and fat fuzzed bassline and monotone electronic sounds surrounds the vocals to a hypnotic journey about a dream. Guitars, saxophone, and electronic blips are the main things in "Slow Learner" and manic noises and guitar blops in "Frogstrap", both tunes follow the same path in tune building, both with excellent vocals by Murphy and terrific playing by Benke, Benis, Tor, Oskar, and Konie. "Worms" is a half pace tune about worms that will eat you. Great flow with squirming vocals. The album closes with "Amphetanarchy", an instrumental piece with a wonderfully tangled groove, strangled saxophones, jamming drums, true freeform art.


Sum:  Who can "Smoke a joint, eat some meat, scream the name of every single sport you can think of that includes a ball", well V**GRA BOYS.

“It was all a dream, but it was so nice. I had a nice house and such a lovely wife. We had a little dog, such a little dog, it reminded me of a large dog. Just a miniature size. ”

A seasoned troubadour from down South with a dense, rich, and colorful life experience, Rex Brown is far greater than the sum total of his already impressive discography as it’s been laid down. Stepping out as a frontman for the first time, Rex reintroduces himself to the world on his barn-burning debut solo album, " Smoke On This".

Rex Brown is an American musician and author, who is best known as having been the longtime bassist for the Grammy-nominated, platinum-selling, now defunct band PANTERA (1982–2003). He is a former member of DOWN (2001–2011), and is currently the bassist for the band KILL DEVIL HILL. He released his debut solo album "Smoke On This" on July 28, 2017. For the first time in Brown's career, the work features him not only as a bassist but also as lead vocalist and guitarist.

One Desire - Hurt

ONE DESIRE is a melodic rock band from Finland, formed in 2012 when drummer Ossi Sivula started gathering musicians and friends for his new project. A couple years of writing songs, making demos with different musicians and friends went by with an aim to create music that could change the world. Various musicians came and went along the way, but in 2014 they met Jimmy Westerlund. Jimmy has several platinum and gold albums to his credit as a producer, guitarist, and songwriter. Jimmy had just moved back to Finland after a stint in Los Angeles. The band hired him to produce some songs, and after recording three songs with a new musical direction, they managed to attract the attention of Serafino Perugino, owner and head of A&R at Frontiers Music.

But, at this point, the band desperately needed a great singer. After trying out some different options, Jimmy suggested his longtime friend Andre Linman from the band STRUM UND DRANG. They were friends since way back and SuD had decided to go on hiatus the year before. Andre got together for a couple of sessions with the guys and after writing a couple new songs together, the style and sound that was about to become ONE DESIRE. Ossi and Andre asked Jimmy to join the band in 2016 and this is the album that was born from that collaboration. Also, not long after this happened, the very talented Jonas Kuhlberg (Paul Di´Anno, Cain´s Offering, MyGrain) was brought on and he became the last link in the chain.

After Jimmy brought in the song “Hurt”, the band felt that they had taken it to the next level. Andre wrote the beautiful ballad, “This Is Where The Heartbreak Begins” and at that time, ONE DESIRE started to find the right direction for Ossis' rocker, “Do You Believe”. Finally, in mid-2016, the band felt they finally were musically locked in and had the material to make an album that they could honestly stand behind and love beyond a doubt. 2017 will be a fantastic year as the journey of ONE DESIRE just begins!

John Norum - Love Is Meant To Last Forever

Sunday, time for a classic.

1987 was the year for the solo debut by John Norum and the release date for "Total Control", he is most known as the guitarist in the Swedish hard rock band EUROPE.

The album features two cover songs, "Back on the Streets", written by former KISS guitarist Vinnie Vincent with country artist Richard Kinky Friedman and originally recorded by the band 3-Speed for a 1984 movie soundtrack, and "Wild One" by THIN LIZZY.

The album´s producer Thomas Witt is/was Norum´s stepfather, a former drummer for Eddie Meduza and a high-ranking manager at CBS/Sony in Sweden at the time.

"Total Control" is dedicated to Tommy Östervik, one of John's friends and heroes, who died in a drowning accident the same night as EUROPE played a concert that later was broadcast on Swedish television.

Norum toured Scandinavia in early 1988 with a line-up consisting of himself, Edman, Jacob, keyboardist Mats Olausson (Yngwie Malmsteen, TALISMAN) and ex-TRASH drummer Hempo Hildén. After the tour, a collaboration with PHENOMENA and DEEP PURPLE singer/bassist Glenn Hughes was announced and Edman and Jacob were let go. The collaboration was short-lived and resulted only in a short televised live performance from Gothenburg. Edman and Jacob replaced Hughes for the booked summer tour but were let go once again when Norum and Hildén were recruited by Don Dokken for his solo album and tour.

Myles Kennedy - Year Of The Tiger

ALTER BRIDGEs lead singer Myles Kennedy is going solo, his latest single is the title tune from his upcoming solo album "Year Of The Tiger", set to be released March 9th, 2018 via Napalm Records. The effort was helmed by ALTER BRIDGE's longtime producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette.

"Year Of The Tiger" will feature a guest appearance by drummer Zia Uddin of THE MAYFIELD FOUR, a group Myles descries as his "first real national touring band" back in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

ALTER BRIDGE is expected to take most of 2018 off from the road while the bandmembers focus on other projects.

Writing for the follow-up to 2016's "The Last Hero" will begin next year, with tentative plans to release the effort in 2019.

Kennedy with his that unique and bluesy voice of his, he gives us a glimpse at his soul, known for his work with ALTER BRIDGE as well as SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS recently completed the highly anticipated record, which is available for pre-order in various bundle configurations at this location.

On "Year Of The Tiger", Kennedy embarks on his first venture as a solo artist by embracing musical elements and influences he hasn't explored until this point in his career. His appreciation for the blues and acoustic based music can be heard throughout the 12-song concept record inspired by the loss of his father when he was a child.

Anthemic spirit, fragile melodies and gritty acoustic guitars don`t turn "Year Of The Tiger" into a sad goodbye, but into a celebration of survival and life in all its facets.

Dark Rites - Hall of the Slain

DARK RITES have released their self-title debut record, this trio comes from three different countries, Sweden, UK and USA. DARK RITES plays a classic mix of hard and heavy, a combination of Death Metal melodic lines, powerful riffs, Trash Metal tempos, Heavy Metal solos which combined with powerful vocal offer a unique metal experience.

DARK RITES was established by Randy and Wojtek in early 2016. Two dudes that have known each other for years and they played together in few bands before DARK RITES was called to life. Oskar joined us shortly afterwards. Together they crafted their self-titled debut.

DARK RITES Consists of:

Randy Kaciak - USA - Drummer/Manager with a passion for brutal melodic metal, played in many bands over the years, full of enthusiasm for this project.

Wojtek Widuch - UK - Guitarist/Composer for Dark Rites, full of ideas, probably enough for next 10 albums. Strongly rooted in Heavy Metal but over the years gained love for Melodic Death Metal.

Oskar Åsfjäll - SWEDEN - Definitely Viking spirit in the band with wild and powerful Vocals which will break you as easy as Axe is breaking bones during Blood Eagle.

Dot Legacy - Kennedy

Today we say hello to four french youngsters in DOT LEGACY! A band that has not really decided which leg they should stand on. Absolutely nothing bad about it, but rather on the contrary, it immediately becomes very interesting, especially if you can deal with all the influences and styles, which these young gentlemen doing splendidly. They have a great attention to the details and arrangements to keep a solid rock base.

These rockers make you jump between Stoner, Noise and even Post-Rock, often using wild or sophisticated subgenres absolved from meaning whatsoever.

Candlemass - Solitude

Today it's time to present category two (Best 80's) from the annual hard rock evening that is always on eve of Twelfth Night.

To follow up the theme and the red thread for this years record I decided to choose the most logical band and tune to follow up on the tough start I had chosen. So the choice was simply Swedish epic doom metal band "Candlemass". "A pillar of classic '80s metal" and the tune includes one of the strongest, most consistent songwriting of the band's career".

Candlemass is an influential established in Stockholm 1984 by bassist, songwriter and bandleader Leif Edling and the drummer, Matz Ekström. After releasing five full-length albums and touring extensively throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Candlemass disbanded in 1994, but reunited three years later. After breaking up again in 2002, Candlemass reformed in 2004 and have continued to record and perform since then. Candlemass is also the seventh best selling artist coming out from Sweden selling as of 2010 more than 15 million albums worldwide.

Todays tune "Solitude" taken from "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus", is the debut album of the Swedish doom metal band Candlemass. It was released June 10, 1986 on Black Dragon Records. On its release, the album had a significantly different sound than other European heavy metal bands of the time, because of their use of operatic vocals mixed over slow and heavy guitar riffs. The album did not sell well on its initial release, which led to the group being dropped from the label during the same year. Since then, the album has been re-issued in several different formats. The album title Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is a Dog Latin rendering of Epic Doom Metal — the genre which the band pioneered and is most commonly identified.

Trakdor - Dealer of the Hidden Hand

Trakdor is a Hard rocking band from Sundsvall Sweden. Formed in 2008 and released their debut album in 2013.

The band plays a heavy and very blues-based hard rock. The production breathes very 70's and sounds very comfortable but a bit muddy. Joakim Nordlander who has a delightfully drawling voice does a really good job behind the microphone and his team mates surrounds him with a great landscape of melodies and musical vibrations.

Dregen - Just Like That

You´ve seen him, definitely heard him. And if you´re Swedish, chances are even your grandmother knows who he is. Truth be told, if you´re into rock music Dregen simply don´t need a further presentation. However, if you happen to have missed out on Swedens premier rock star – let´s take it from the beginning.

Dregen - born Andreas Tyrone Svensson – knew early on that he was meant for something different than a traditional 9 to 5 gig based in the small town of Nässjö, Sweden. Together with childhood friends Nicke Borg, Peder Carlsson and Johan Blomquist he formed what later would turn out to be the pride of his home town – the Backyard Babies.

The band decided to go for it and left Nässjö, moving to the capital Stockholm in pursuit of their dream – to take Backyard Babies to the very top. It didn´t take long before Dregen and his mates had earned themselves a record deal and in 1994 their debut album ”Diesel & Power” hit the streets. That very same year Dregen met singer and guitarist Nicke Andersson who at the time played drums with Swedish death metal outfit Entombed. As it turned out they both had a lot in common and out of this new friendship yet another classic Swedish rock band was born – The Hellacopters.

The Hellacopters made it big in 1996 with their album ”Supershitty To The Max” (it also won a Swedish Grammy award). It was followed 1997 by the record ”Payin´ the Dues” and they got the great opportunity to tour with legendary KISS. The success of the band quite literally made way also for the Backyard Babies. That very same year marked the release of another Grammy winning album – ”Total 13” – which became the breakthrough of the Backyard Babies. Few have had the pleasure to play in two of the biggest rock groups in Sweden. Even less people have done so simultaneously! By the end of the 90´s Dregen came to realize that however pleasant a situation it may have been, it wouldn´t do anyone good in the long run. Dregen hence soon returned to his roots and carried on his journey with the Backyard Babies. And the rest is, as they say, history. Rock history to be exact.

When the album ”Making Enemies is Good” was released in 2001, Backyard Babies definitely ruled the rock´n roll kingdom of Sweden. Having been awarded with yet another Grammy award they toured the world several times and even did a European tour opening up for AC/DC, a feat no other Swedish band to date can match. Since then the band have released a number of EP´s, singles and albums such as “Stockholm Syndrome”, “People Like Us Like People Like Us”, “Backyard Babies” and “Them XX”. The later resulted in a anniversary tour and an indefinite hiatus followed in 2010.

But maybe you already know all of the above. However, most people don´t know that Dregen once was auditioning for the role as guitarist with Guns ´n Roses. Or that he´s a talented artist when it comes painting, is one son of a gun at playing poker and reel the big ones in while fishing.

In May 2011 Dregen also joined Michael Monroe, from former legendary outfit Hanoi Rocks.

Michael on Dregen: Dregen is the perfect choice for this band. We are a group of very strong individuals and we really needed a great personality as a guitar player. Dregen has the whole package together – he’s a killer guitarist, a brilliant showman, looks great and has the right kind of attitude and taste in music. I feel very glad and lucky that he was willing and able to join us. Dregen is a real star and a true rocker at heart. I can’t wait to start rockin’ out with him in the band!

You also don´t know how Dregens upcoming solo album sounds like. But in 2013 you, and the rest of the world, is about to find out. At this point we´ve only read the very first pages of Dregens career and no one knows how things will end.

From now on it´s a one man army.
