"Would?" is a song by ALICE IN CHAINS, written by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell as a tribute to his friend Andrew Wood, lead vocalist of MOTHER LOVE BONE, who died in 1990. Cantrell sings the verses of the song, while Layne Staley sings the chorus.
The song first appeared on the soundtrack to the 1992 film "Singles", where the members of ALICE IN CHAINS make a cameo appearance—and later appeared on the band's second studio album "Dirt", also released in 1992.
Today's version of the tune is made by the Swedish progressive metal band OPETH. The tune was released on the flipside of the single "Burden", released December 9, 2008. The tune "Burden" is taken from the ninth full-length studio album "Watershed".
Monday, new week, time to present "Record Of The Week".
From Martin Méndez, bassist of the ubiquitous OPETH comes WHITE STONES, a solo death metal project, that their debut album named "Kuarahy" (pronounced Kwa-Ra-Hee) will be released on March 20th, 2020 via Nuclear Blast.
Martín Méndez was just 17 years old when he moved from Uruguay to Sweden to play bass in OPETH. During the years with OPETH that gravitated towards the more progressive and psychedelic territory and leaving the type of music, he was grown up. With WHITE STONES debut he revisits the heaviness he started out playing. The album "Kuarahy" is named after his birthplace in Uruguay, “Kuarahy” is the native Uruguayan people’s word for "Sun", the record represents a return to his roots, both familial and musically. By exploring the forgotten paths of his ancestors via the style of music that remains his one true love - death metal.
"Kuarahy" is a groovy, heavy, and dark piece, that easily could associate it with an old OPETH album, like "Deliverance" for instance. It's not the same, a pretty unfair association, but it will work out for those who want that OPETH growls again :)
On the album has Mendez taking care of both bass and rhythm guitar in the studio, along with the singer Eloi Boucherie (VIDRES A LA SANG) and drummer Jordi Farre (CRUCIAMENTUM), and his OPETH bandmate Fredrik Akesson has taken care of all of the guitar solos, except for one tune were former KATATONIA and BLOODBATH guitarist Per Eriksson shows his skill.
The album has a dark and atmospheric vibe with lots of progressive thinking in the tune buildings. I guess there the associations with OPETH. From the short instrumental opening with the title tune that builds up the path for melodic and progressive "Rusty Shell", tasty and heavy riffs with growling vocals, an excellent piece of music to kick start the album. There are plenty of excellent tunes on the album, like the progressive and delightful "Drowned In Time" or "The One" where we get served a great solo by Per Eriksson."Worms" is a groovy beast and "Guyra" is another tasty piece with catchy hooks and delicious riffs and where Frederik Akesson provides a solo that you will fall backward on. It doesn't end here, the tune "Ashes" forces thru like an overheated iron factory with its living and wide structure. The progressive and a bit far-out "Infected Soul" is beauty in itself, also the following "Taste Of Blood" is an excellent one. The album closes up with the sentimental "Jazy" and ends up an excellent debut that will get a lot of spins in the future. The album was Recorded at Farm Of Sounds studios, Barcelona, Produced by Martin Mendez, Mixed & Mastered by Jamie Gomez at Orgone Studios, UK
Sum: An excellent debut in the veins of OPETH, you need this!

Today's tune "Drowned In Time" is taken from the debut album "Kuarahy", enjoy!
"In Cauda Venenum" the 13th album by the Swedish progressive rockers OPETH. It's a sonic brew of "13 miljoner 100 tusentals" (13 million 100 thousands).
That OPETH set out to do something a little different with the album "In Cauda Venenum", he decided to release two versions, one in English and one in Swedish. Outside of vocal cadence, the records are the same. Take your pick or buy them both as I did :)'
The fact that the English version may certainly be the more accessible of the two. But that the Swedish version becomes more real and more "True" for us Swedes is not strange but fully understandable, that Mr. Åkerfeldt voice is just lovely when he’s singing in his native tongue when he expresses himself in a more normal way with his native language makes it closer, clearer and easier to get a grip of his thoughts and feelings significantly more than when he is trying to translate. Even if his English lyrics are high class the use of Swedish makes a bigger impact on me. Still, both have strong songwriting no doubt about that. The resonating guitar solo, instrumentally and the vocals are the stars here, no matter the version.
The album is a massive piece with its 67 mins of playtime divided into 10 tunes. It's an amazing sounding album, a band in a playful mood with engaging tunes full of passion and life. It's a true delight instrumentally and really fun to play and suits perfectly with a glass of red wine and slippers around the open fire that burns lively in the living room along with OPETH in your speakers. From the brilliant way to start in "Svekets Prins" (Dignity), excellent guitar playing with a guitar solo that gives goosebumps and the superb vocals from Åkerfeldt. Heavy riffing opens up the progressive rocker and the album's first single "Hjärtat Vet Vad Handen Gör" (Heart In Hand) that takes you on a frenetic dopamine ride. "De Närmast Sörjande" (Next Of Kin) is a heavy and dark tune that musical and lyrically is a masterpiece. The freakout piece "Charlatan" with shredding bass licks in a spaced-out religious world. "Banemannen" (The Garroter) and "Kontinuerlig Drift" (Continuum) are two of the more spectacular halfpace tunes. "Ingen Sanning Är Allas" (Universal Truth) is another beauty. Albums finale "Allting Tar Slut" (All Things Will Pass) flows in a bit jazzy way, flawless guitars and marvelous drumming make this a perfect and powerful ending of an excellent album. "In Cauda Venenum" shows the sheer level of talent that OPETH has taken and this is the best record for the band since "Heritage".
Sum: The 4th and strongest of the albums in the band’s progressive path.
Today's tune "Svekets Prins" (Dignity) is taken from "In Cauda Venenum", Released on September 27th, 2019 on Moderbolaget and Nuclear Blast. Enjoy!

KING HOBO is a rock band from Sweden, formed in 2005. Jean-Paul Gaster from CLUTCH met OPETH keyboardist Per Wiberg at the Sounds of the Underground Tour. They jammed together, and allowed other musicians to join them, with the motto of "get funky or get out". Later, they gathered at a home Wiberg rented in Sweden, and invited KAMCHATKA guitarist Thomas Andersson and Ulf Rockis Ivarsson, among others, to record an album in one week, witch resulted of the release of the self-titled album "King Hobo" (2008). After busy times with their regular bands KING HOBO was left on the bookshelf for some time until it was time to shake off the dust and record the second album "Mauga" (2019). The band is called "a triumph of musicianship drawing on all the talent at the group's disposal.
"Mauga" was release on May 31st via the CLUTCHs record label, Weathermaker Music.
Today's tune "King Blues" is taken from the latest release "Mauga", the clip is filmed live when
KING HOBO playing at Sticky Fingers, Gothenburg. (February 9, 2013). Enjoy!
The Swedish progressive metal legends OPETH have released "Garden of the Titans: Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre" on November 2nd via Moderbolaget Records / Nuclear Blast Entertainment. This historic event was captured for the DVD, Blu-Ray and Vinyl formats during their performance May 11th, 2017 at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, CO. Both the DVD and Blu-ray formats include CDs containing the audio as well.
Video footage for "Garden of the Titans" was overseen by The Deka Brothers (CARPENTER BRUT, THE PRODIGY) and audio was mixed by David Castillo (KATATONIA, BLOODBATH). All versions feature the masterful artwork of revered artist Travis Smith (NEVERMORE, KATATONIA, TESTAMENT).
Always an unstoppable force for uniqueness amid a sea of generic swill, OPETH has been setting the rulebook ablaze, and ploughing a uniquely progressive and exploratory furrow for over 25 years now. Neither conforming nor exhibiting any desire to be restricted to a single genre, OPETH, quite simply, has a time honored tradition of blowing our minds with both class and forward thinking. All these years later, nothing and everything has changed once again with their most recent album, "Sorceress".
"Sorceress" was released in September 2016. For the band's first effort for Nuclear Blast via OPETH's imprint label Moderbolaget Records, the group returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, also home to pivotal releases from QUEEN, RUSH and JUDAS PRIEST, where the Swedes had tracked "Pale Communion" in 2014 with Tom Dalgety.
Today's tune "Demon of the Fall" taken from the new live album, originally released on third full-length studio album "My Arms, Your Hearse", released August 1998, enjoy!

"Era", the new video from Swedish progressive rockers OPETH. A really beautifully video was made for this tune, directed by Markus Hofko.
In all of Mikael's excitement he comments:
”I have to say our involvement in the making of the ”Era” video was so minimal we can’t take credit either for or against its brilliance. We did 3D scans of our bodies (clothed) in Munich during the last European tour. I remember everyone’s extremely tired and probably slightly hungover. The director just placed us in a ice-cold room and then scanned us with something that looked like a flashing hairdryer. Done! We’ve done our part for the video. Next! During the process of finishing the piece it got clear to me that it really works with the song. That’s something I was involved in actually, picking the song. It’s extremely difficult. Which song to choose? How do I know what works best for this format? Well, I don’t. I picked a song from the record that has a strong chorus. Slightly old school way of thinking I guess, but ultimately it didn’t matter all that much to me. The video is nice. I dig it. It’s slightly on the pretentious side, but hey, works for me! And like I said, it really works with the overall vibe of the song. Lyrically and musically and definitely emotionally."
- Mikael Åkerfeldt
Today's tune "Era" is taken from OPETHs twelfth studio album "Sorceress".
"Lucidity", the new video from SOEN, the Swedish progressive heavy rock group featuring world-renowned drummer Martin Lopez (formerly of AMON AMARTH and OPETH) and the dynamic voice of Joel Ekelöf (WILLOWTREE). The tune is taken from SOENs new and upcoming full-length album "Lykaia", which will be released on February 3.
Lopez tells Billboard: "This song represents a time in my life when I unconsciously walked towards self-destruction and celebrates, to an extent, the death of that lifestyle and the birth of a new era. It's dark but comforting. The music is soft and dreamy but carries the tension of a past-life full of mistakes."
"Lykaia" is a journey into earthier places — SOEN's most cohesive, powerful and congruent creative quest yet. For those who have followed SOEN's career thus far, the new album's concepts of journey and exploration are not new. 2012's "Cognitive" beat a firmly heavy, progressive metal path. 2014's "Tellurian" — with its PINK FLOYD explorative spirit and OPETH-like forceful power — saw SOEN start to stride freely into their own control and unique visions.
The album was recorded at Ghost Ward, Studio Gröndal and Deep Well in Stockholm, Sweden.
SOEN is:
Stefan Stenberg – Bass
Marcus Jidell – Guitar
Lars Åhlund – Keys, guitar
Joel Ekelöf – Vocals
Martin Lopez – Drums, percussion
Today's tune is the official video for the new track "Lucidity" taken from the new album "Lykaia" available 3rd February 2017.

"Sorceress" is the twelfth studio album by the Swedish band OPETH. The album was released on 30 September 2016 via record label Nuclear Blast and the band's own imprint Moderbolaget. The album was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales. Following the album's release, the band will embark on a world tour with American band THE SWORD as support, see tour dates below.
2016 marks the monumental return of one of heavy rock’s most unique, revered and fearless bands of the last three decades, OPETH. Over the years, the experimental, prog veterans have continuously reinvented themselves, pushing the boundaries of their craft and expectations of fans and critics alike.
"Sorceress" is the 3:rd album that follows the new path of progressive folk rock and is album with great material and with more creative control from a band that dares to take new steps. "Sorceress" is even wider than "Heritage" and "Pale Communion".
The album have many excellent tunes like the gorgeous folksy "Will O the Wisp" to the RUSH alike "Era" or the more traditional outfit in "The Wilde Flowers". The title track "Sorceress" could have been on "Pale Communion", great piece. There is a few real highlights, like "The Seventh Sojourn" where some world music slips in with some grandiose sitar and strings, very beautiful. The duelling organ and guitars of "Chrysalis" and with Åkerfeldt’s confidence singing with a embraced control. "Strange Brew" could be the albums strongest tune with it's spacey masterclass of riff-centric hard prog glory. "Sorceress" is a really good album!
”The new album "Sorceress" is our 12th studio album since our beginnings in 1990,” says Åkerfeldt. “I find it difficult to understand that we’ve been going on for 26 years, let alone that we’ve made 12 records now, all of which I am very proud of. ”Sorceress” is no exception. I love this album, as does the whole band. I wrote the music during 5-6 months and we spent only 12 days recording it at Rockfield studios in Wales. I find that once again we’ve taken a step forward. Or sideways, Or backwards. Somewhere!? It’s different! It’s extremely diverse. And if I may say so myself, extremely good. I feel the right to say that since I like to think I know this band better than anyone on the planet. Also, I always manage to detach myself from the record and listen as a fan. It’s a fine little record. My favorite in our discography right now. Of course. That’s how it should be, right? It’s both fresh and old, both progressive and rehashed. Heavy and calm. Just the way we like it. Hopefully there’ll be others around the globe sharing this opinion. It was a joy to make it. A fucking joy to record it, and a sheer joy listening to it. So there you have it!”
Sum: The 2016 OPETH is heavier than ever and that needs to fit in your record shelf!
Today's tune is the title track from "Sorceress", enjoy!

Saturday, let's continue in the trail of PLANET OF ZEUS and the Tour with HONG FAUX and CLUTCH. The other support act during this tour was the Swedish heavy metal/stoner band BOMBUS, from Gothenburg. With a upcoming 3:rd album they played 3 new tunes mixed up with some classic BOMBUS rockers. That BOMBUS guys rocks both on stage and in private is great, make life so much easier if you can work together. Anyway, they delivered a kick ass performance and I really looking forward to the new/upcoming album. Here comes some cool pictures from the Soundcheck and the show, enjoy!
BOMBUS are a heavy metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. Bombus initially signed to Mourningwood Recordings and their debut album "Bombus" before signing to Century Media on 10 April 2013; releasing another single "Apparatus", on 6 May 2013 and their second studio album "The Poet and The Parrot" on 26 September 2013. The third album "Repeat Until Death", which is scheduled for worldwide release through Century Media Records on February 26th, 2016. The album is mastered by Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMON AMARTH, ARCH ENEMY). The Artwork was created by Ulf Lundén.
Today's tune is the title track from the upcoming album "Repeat Until Death".
Monday, new week, time to introduce the "Record Of The Week".
Just over a week ago I was at the Concert Hall here in Stockholm and looked at the 25th Anniversary concert, "An Evening with OPETH"
The band really gave a great evening, music divided into two sets, the first part was "Ghost Reveries" is its entirety, amazing and the second with a lot of goodies during their career.
"Ghost Reveries" is an album that I listened a lot back in the days and it's a record that get's played every now and then but got a real reunion of the concert and have been really close among a few others lately. So this "Record Of The Week" is simply "Ghost Reveries".
Here is a of my pictures from the show :)
"Ghost Reveries" is the eighth full-length album by Swedish heavy metal band OPETH. It was released on August 29, 2005. The album is the first album by OPETH to include keyboardist Per Wiberg as a "permanent" member (although Wiberg contributed keyboard work to OPETHs live performances starting around the time of Lamentations (Live at Shepherd's Bush Empire 2003)), and it is the last OPETH album to include drummer Martin Lopez and long-time guitarist Peter Lindgren.
"Ghost Reveries" is so full of life and creativity, something that has always been one of the most strongest things about the band. The album have a magical artful balance between the brutal and melodic sound. Already on the first track "Ghost of Perdition" set's rib for how the album is.
It contains excellent melodies and acoustic parts. The keyboards adds a great environment for the hard and heavy force. Mikael's voice is just stunning, where his great clean singing weighing up to his heavy and hard growl. The album is full of unique melodies and flowing riffs that are masterfully mixed to make this a top record! "Ghost Reveries" is one of OPETHs finest to date.
Opeth is a Swedish heavy metal band that formed in 1990 in Stockholm. The band, which has been through several line-up changes, currently comprises Mikael Åkerfeldt (vocals/guitar), Fredrik Åkesson (guitar), Martin Mendez (bass), Martin "Axe" Axenrot (drums), and Per Wiberg (keyboards). Since the band's inception, there have been 15 official members, with Åkerfeldt being the one continual member.
Opeth's dominant style of music is Scandinavian death metal, however, the band combines their genre with progressive metal, progressive rock, folk, jazz, and blues, and on average, their songs last around 10 minutes. A notable exception in their catalogue is the 2003 release of Damnation, a predominantly progressive rock record containing no death metal styled vocals, distorted guitars, double bass drumming, or songs over eight minutes in length.
The artwork was created after the completion of the album. Åkerfeldt commented on the artwork, saying:
"I'd been looking for one of the old medieval looking woodcuts, me and Peter went to the Royal library here in Stockholm looking for a evil (yep!) picture, but that was like searching for a needle in a haystack. Couldn't find one. In the meantime I'd received some pics from good ol' Travis Smith. And as per usual with Mr. Smith, he's a genius...the candle pictures just blew me away...that's the cover, fuck the woodcuts! I love it! It's probably the most gothic looking cover we've had, right?"
Today's tune "The Grand Conjuration" was the album's only single. A music video of the song was released, although about half of the song was edited from the video, due to the length of the song. Lopez does not appear in the video, as he was sick and was temporarily replaced by Gene Hoglan
