Kingnomad - Mapping The Inner Void

Monday, New Week, it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Mapping The Inner Void" is the latest release by the Swedish quartet KINGNOMAD.

Initially formed in 2014 by best friends Jay and Marcus while hanging out in Jay's studio basement jamming on BLACK SABBATH grooves and downing bottomless beers, the pair soon stumbled onto a riff of their own making. Over the space of one evening evolved the song "Lucifer Is Dead" and with that one track followed a newfound purpose. Setting off on a quest to forge music from the influence of hard and heavy 70s rock, psychedelic flights of fancy and the hauntingly ethereal worlds of H.P. Lovecraft, the main driving force behind KINGNOMAD was to have as much fun as possible.

Recruiting the only two people that they knew were qualified enough to orchestrate a killer rhythm section, into the fold came Andreas on drums and Maximilian on bass. With the quartet retreating back to Jay's basement - newly christened the "The Room of Doom" - material flowed like a never-ending stream of occult energy. Songs were written, parts recorded and almost as if by magic they found themselves propelled forward in time, primed and ready to release what they had created.

Closely courted by Ripple Music they were asked last year to contribute to Chapter III in the labels ongoing underground series The Second Coming of Heavy, with Michigan rockers BONEHAWK. And with the alchemy of creativity burning fervently in their minds, a new batch of original songs were recorded for their debut album shortly afterward.

KINGNOMAD:

Mr Jay – Vocals, Lead Guitar, Piano/Organ
Andreas – Drums, Percussion
Marcus – Guitars
Maximilian – Bass, Backing Vocals

"Mapping The Inner Void" is an interesting journey in the land off dusky doom rock. A draw of the occult colours music, clean vocals with a poppish attitude make you refer to their fellow countrymen in GHOST, but the main inspiration must be BLUE ÖYSTER CULT, where the psychedelic and clear bluesy melody are mixed between heavy SABBATH riffs.

KINGNOMAD have made a very solid record that have been on repeat for sometime now. The Vinyl is on the way and should land soon, I hope. Was going to wait with the review until the Vinyl had a chance to spin for a few lapse, but I can't wait, eager that I am.

The album starts with the amazing "Lucifer’s Dream", baffled jazzy intro before the guitars jump in and the tune kicks off, slow and trailing melody with a melodic beautiful singing high up on a pedestal, great track to another amazing tune, "Nameless Cult" where the tempo turns up slightly, heavy riffages and vocals that makes you lose your composure, a very melodic piece. "Whispers From R’lyeh" is a beautiful trippy tune, clear bass line, loose guitar in a desert way. "The Witches Garden" is a bluesy rocker, the vocals are pretty trippy and far-out, but very well mixed. The Cow bells calls in "The Green Meadow Part 1 & 2", a cloudy tune with doomy roots, distorted fuzzy guitars flows like steam wind on the sunburnt desert. "She Wizard" straight forward SABBATH riffage with a popish chorus and heavy organs. The album ends with the melodic life drainer tune "The Waiting Game".

"Mapping The Inner Void" was released on 24 February 2017.

Sum: "Mapping the Internal Void" gives you a record to remember, a dusky doom rock with qualitative retro flirts, should not be missed.

Today's tune "Nameless Cult", taken from "Mapping the Internal Void", enjoy!

Avatarium - All I Want

Hailing from Stockholm, gloomy metal outfit Avatarium was founded in late 2012. Following the success of their eponymous debut, out on November 01st, 2013 and the first ever single "Moonhorse", released September 20th of the same year, Avatarium have just announced the release of their new EP ‘All I Want’. The vinyl/digital only EP will be out November 14th, 2014 via Nuclear Blast.

Mid 2013, just eight months within the bands’ history, the word was spreading rapidly about their special blend of heavy adventurous music: Influenced by the likes of Jethro Tull, Blue Öyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, adding the peaks of pop and 60’s vibes, Avatarium deliver some delicate moments of beauty and frailness rarely to be found in a band these days.

Avatarium have launched a lyric video for the title track from their upcoming EP "All I Want". I

The band are led by Candlemass bassist Leif Edling, and also feature frontwoman Jennie-Ann Smith, guitarist Marcus Jidell (Royal Hunt, Evergrey), drummer Lars Sköld (Tiamat) and keyboardist Carl Westholm.

The old spirit comes even more alive, with psychedelic percussionist Michael Blair, who has worked with Tom Waits and Lou Reed, among others, guesting on "All I Want".
Commented Marcus Jidell: "[Michael] showed up at the studio with a big 'bag of tricks' with metals, crashers, shakers and a lot of strange things which he made sound like if you throw in a punkrocker at Woodstock and feed him with psychedelic pills!" About the new songs, he adds: "We tried to keep things simple and spontaneous during the recordings, something I hope people will be able to hear. Also, I think that Jennie-Ann Smith has reached new levels with the way she sings on both of the new songs!"

The three live songs were recorded at the 2014 edition of renowned Roadburn festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands, which was the second ever Avatarium show and the first one outside of Sweden.

Due to his health condition, Edling was unable to perform with Avatarium at some of the band's most recent gigs. Filling in for him once again was Anders Iwers from Tiamat.

Percussionist Michael Blair guests on the EP and Jidell previously said his contribution helped them break new musical ground. He said: "Michael showed up at the studio with a big bag of tricks, with metals, crashers, shakers and a lot of strange things. He made sound like if you throw in a punk rocker at Woodstock and feed him with psychedelic pills!

Blue Öyster Cult - Hot Rails To Hell

Sunday, time for a classic and today's tune influenced by fellow Ace of Spades (Spader Ess) blog post about live albums.

On Your Feet or on Your Knees is Blue Öyster Cult's first live album, released in early 1975. Each of the band's first three studio albums is represented by three songs each, two other songs are covers ("I Ain't Got You", albeit with modified lyrics, and "Born to Be Wild"), and one ("Buck's Boogie") is an original instrumental that remains a staple of the band's live shows to this day.

The 12 songs include performances at the Academy of Music in New York City, the Paramount Theatre in Portland, the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, the Show Palace in Phoenix, the Long Beach Arena, the P.N.E. Coliseum in Vancouver and the Capitol Theatre in New Jersey, though it is not clear which songs came from which venues and on what dates.

Blue Öyster Cult (often abbreviated BÖC) is an American rock band from Long Island, New York, United States, best known for such hard rock songs as "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", "Burnin' for You", and "Godzilla". Since the release of their self-titled debut album in 1972, the band has sold over 24 million albums worldwide, including 7 million in the United States alone. The band's music videos, especially "Burnin' for You", received heavy rotation on MTV when the music television network premiered in 1981, cementing the band's contribution to the development and success of the music video in modern pop culture. Today, BÖC's music continues to be played on AOR-friendly radio stations as well as in movies, television shows, and commercials, and even during sporting events.

Today tune "Hot Rails To Hell" is taken from the live album "On Your Feet or on Your Knees", originally released on "Tyranny and Mutation" from 1973.
