Candlemass - House of Doom

Swedish doom metal legends CANDLEMASS are back with an online game and a brand new soundtrack called "House Of Doom".

It only takes a few riffs of the tune to set the familiar CANDLEMASS in order. It's great to hear that they still want to create some music. And yes, the king is back behind the axe of doom aka Leif Edling.

The Swedish pioneers once again to manage to create some epic doom metal on the EP "House Of Doom", and yes a full length is in the pipeline. The Ep is set to be released on physical format May 25.

Today's tune "House Of Doom" is a five-reel video slot with 10 fixed pay lines. It is a volatile game with a high payout. The tune was written by Edling, produced by Marcus Jidell, mixed by David Castillo and mastered by Maor Appelbaum.

Avararium - Hurricanes and Halos

Monday, New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

Swedish metallers AVATARIUM, fronted by Jennie-Ann Smith, have launched their third full-length opus titled "Hurricanes and Halos".

Founded back in 2012’s by CANDLEMASS mainman and bassist Leif Edling and SOEN guitarist Marcus Jidell, AVATARIUM completed their line-up with keyboardist Carl Westholm, known for his work with CARPTREE, KRUX and JUPITER SOCIETY and drummer Lars Sköld of TIAMAT, beside already mentioned Jennie-Ann Smith, Edling still continues his influence as mentor and creative force, and has written six of the eight new tracks. However, this time Jennie-Ann and Marcus were also strongly involved in the songwriting process, and with the new bass master Mats Rydström.

"Hurricanes and Halos" is a bluesy, 70s influenced quasi-doom rock monster. The album fires off with the killing tune "Into the Fire – Into the Storm", where a powerful voice together with a great guitar work with masterful solos and a hammond organ that makes you weak in every single bone in your body. "The Starless Sleep" (today's tune) is an amazing tune, with superb vocals and a melody that have an convincing catchiness that easily could be a big radio hit in the future. "Road to Jerusalem" is a folksy half pace tune, amazing strumming guitar-work and beautiful vocals. The nine-minute epic "Medusa’s Child" is far out piece with kids sing-alongs, creepy weirdness, shifts between heavy and melodic and progressive old school. Next masterpiece is the "The Sky at the Bottom of the Sea" where the typical Edling trade mark make it's appearance along with psychedelic DEEP PURPLE organs, groovy and very powerful and the vocals make you vibrate of happiness. "When Breath Turns to Air" is a slow thing, a beautiful ballad. "A Kiss (From the End of the World)" is a another great tune with guitars that will flip you over and astonishing Jennie-Ann, it’s remarkably how she with that kind of ease adapts to the overall mood of the songs on the album. The record wraps up melancholy and elegant with the instrumental piece of the title track "Hurricanes and Halos".

Summary: "Hurricanes and Halos" is a very joyful and elegant album, classic, epic and powerful!

Today's tune "The Starless Sleep", second single/video release from "Hurricanes and Halos", enjoy!

Avatarium - Into the Fire/Into the Storm

The Swedish Doom Metal band AVATARIUM have released the first tune ”Into the Fire/Into the Storm” the first taste from the upcoming "Hurricanes And Halos". Vintage blues rock and modern doom, beauty and darkness, heavy guitars and fragile ballads that's the sound of Stockholm’s AVATARIUM.

Asked about the album title "Hurricanes And Halos", Jidell contemplates: “In times like these we are constantly reminded how power enables people to do evil in the name of a good cause. Whether there are religious, political or cultural overtones, their goal is always to manipulate and create fear in our hearts”.

Although the key tone of this third full-length release is amazingly catchy with earworms such as the ‘The Starless Sleep’ or ‘The Sky At The Bottom Of The Sea’, the band still relies on a crushing doom atmosphere with a ghostly vibe. Eternal longing and bizarre little snapshot moments like in ‘A Kiss From The End Of The World’ define the lyrics, but it’s the ballad ‘When Breath Turns Into Air’ that has a particularly deep meaning to Marcus and is dedicated to his deceased father:

“My father was the one that no matter what circumstances, never lost hope or faith in me. Growing up in a family where things were quite turbulent at times, he enabled a safe attachment. He was a very gentle and warm-hearted man and I will always miss him. The song is about loss but also about how someone’s spirit can stay with you even though their physical remains are gone.”

The new album was produced by Marcus Jidell himself, while David Castillo (KATATONIA, BLOODBATH, OPETH) recorded and mixed it in the famous Ghost Ward Studios and the mastering was done by Jens Bogren (SOILWORK, SEPULTURA). Together they created an organic and warm sound that sets "Hurricanes and Halos" apart from the overbred, electronically optimized mass:

”A big and fat sound is what we like and we do whatever it takes to get there! AVATARIUM is about pushing boundaries and exploring new grounds”, states string wizard Marcus Jidell and continuous: ”Our focus is not on technical aspects but on landscapes and colours. Diverse emotions, anxieties, defenses and human conditions all find their place in our music. We are aiming to find the human touch, to keep it simple, allow mistakes but also to make it glorious, shining and greater than our own selves.”

The bands master mind Leif Edling is behind 6 of the songs, the rest is made by the singer Jennie-Ann Smith and guitarist Marcus Jidell. The cover is created by Erik Rovanpera and is inspired of the tune "Medusa Child".

Today's tune "Into the Fire/Into the Storm", taken from the upcoming 3:rd studio album "Hurricanes and Halos", set to be release on May 26.

Avatarium - Girl With The Raven Mask

Swedish doom metal masters AVATARIUM are set to release their upcoming album, which is called "The Girl With The Raven Mask" on October 23rd via Nuclear Blast.

Bassist Leif Edling is really content with the result:

“Think we have created something unique this time with AVATARIUM! The songs are more written to be just songs and there are some really nice moments on the record that I personally love… the straight forward title track, the beautiful ‘January Sea’, the riff in ‘Ghostlight’ and the groove in ‘Run Killer Run’. The organ and the Rhodes piano are ridiculously loud in the mix at times, even Dr. Carl agrees hehe, but i think it gives even more edge to the songs! I hope people will dig »The Girl With The Raven Mask« as much as I do myself, and if they don’t, it’s their problem. A band can’t deliver more than we have done here, so it is an album close to perfection! When an album is perfect…shoot me!“

The first track out from the Album "Girl With The Raven Mask" is the title track, enjoy!

Avatarium - All I Want

Hailing from Stockholm, gloomy metal outfit Avatarium was founded in late 2012. Following the success of their eponymous debut, out on November 01st, 2013 and the first ever single "Moonhorse", released September 20th of the same year, Avatarium have just announced the release of their new EP ‘All I Want’. The vinyl/digital only EP will be out November 14th, 2014 via Nuclear Blast.

Mid 2013, just eight months within the bands’ history, the word was spreading rapidly about their special blend of heavy adventurous music: Influenced by the likes of Jethro Tull, Blue Öyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, adding the peaks of pop and 60’s vibes, Avatarium deliver some delicate moments of beauty and frailness rarely to be found in a band these days.

Avatarium have launched a lyric video for the title track from their upcoming EP "All I Want". I

The band are led by Candlemass bassist Leif Edling, and also feature frontwoman Jennie-Ann Smith, guitarist Marcus Jidell (Royal Hunt, Evergrey), drummer Lars Sköld (Tiamat) and keyboardist Carl Westholm.

The old spirit comes even more alive, with psychedelic percussionist Michael Blair, who has worked with Tom Waits and Lou Reed, among others, guesting on "All I Want".
Commented Marcus Jidell: "[Michael] showed up at the studio with a big 'bag of tricks' with metals, crashers, shakers and a lot of strange things which he made sound like if you throw in a punkrocker at Woodstock and feed him with psychedelic pills!" About the new songs, he adds: "We tried to keep things simple and spontaneous during the recordings, something I hope people will be able to hear. Also, I think that Jennie-Ann Smith has reached new levels with the way she sings on both of the new songs!"

The three live songs were recorded at the 2014 edition of renowned Roadburn festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands, which was the second ever Avatarium show and the first one outside of Sweden.

Due to his health condition, Edling was unable to perform with Avatarium at some of the band's most recent gigs. Filling in for him once again was Anders Iwers from Tiamat.

Percussionist Michael Blair guests on the EP and Jidell previously said his contribution helped them break new musical ground. He said: "Michael showed up at the studio with a big bag of tricks, with metals, crashers, shakers and a lot of strange things. He made sound like if you throw in a punk rocker at Woodstock and feed him with psychedelic pills!

Avatarium - Boneflower

The sixth track on this year's disc is a beautifully balanced blend of lush melody and heavy riffs, where doom rock gets a new side by a feminine beauty of the talented singer Jennie Ann Smith. Avatarium is the new project by Leif Edling.

Todays tune "Boneflower" is a real facemelter where the crushing doom of Candlemass mixes up with the 60/70's feel with a creepy and haunting vibe that will hunt you forever!

Avatarium - Avatarium

Number 6 on Tune Of The Days best album list of year 2013 is Leif Edling's new project Avatarium and the selftitled album.

It is a beautifully balanced blend of lush melodies and heavy riffs, where doom rock gets a new side by a feminine beauty of the talented singer Jennie Ann Smith.

The crushing doom of Candlemass may be prevalent through the album, but Avatarium’s 60s / 70s feel is also trippy, with a creepy and haunting vibe that makes space for moments of beautiful tranquility before pummeling you with surgically precise riffs of sheer Edling brilliance. Foremost among Avatarium’s not so secret weapons are the haunting vocals of Jennie-Ann Smith — they infuse the introspective, quiet passages with goosebump-inducing emotional power, and propel the heavier moments into a cathartic juggernaut of inspired doom intensity.

Candlemass - The Sound of Dying Demons

Today we serve a real double penetration, first this week's album and then a bunch of photos from the band's release party .... erm double penetration sounds a little crazy there, but who cares.

Candlemass is one of the pioneers of doom metal, with the iconic album "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus", released in 1986. Now the band has recorded what Leif say will be their final studio album, "Psalms For The Undead". They still plan to play live, for how long is still unknown.

Psalms For The Undead is the 11:th album and to be the last to feature vocalist Robert Lowe, who has since been replaced by Therion/Krux singer Mats Levén for touring purposes. In addition, keyboardist Per Wiberg (Ex-Opeth, Spiritual Beggars) would also join the band on stage for these live shows.

The album continues in the same familiar path without any significant excesses, the album is the catchiest overall songwriting Leif's done in the past 10 years. Even Rob sounds excellent, it's perhaps the best he's sounded to date. The tunes have a real blazingly melodic with heavy, doomy riffs. And in overall this album is a real highclass Candlemass album a must if you dig this.

Now that the doomsday bells are ringing for the last time, I put in this with a great satisfaction that Candlemass choose to end with the flag on top, an extremely worthy bookend for an incredibly impressive journey. Regardless of how much time you want to waste wondering if they will stick to the ultimatum, but I really hope that they do.

In conjunction with the release of the album, arranged Candlemass a concert (release party) at Debaser here in Stockholm, of course, I was there. A concert that really were of good standard and lots of classic tracks were played, a complete musical enjoyment.

Here is some pictures taken during the evening.

My friend Jojje with Leif

Todays tune "The Sound of Dying Demons" is taken from the last record "Psalms For The Undead". A tune that is very true to its title, as it’s slow, heavy and epic as hell.

Thank you, Candlemass, for all these years and countless hours that are spent together with your wonderfully epic doom. Things simply are not going to be the same without you.
