Procol Harum - Pandora's Box

Time for a Sunday Classic, today I will present a band that I never thought existed any more, namely "Procol Harum", they are a British rock band. Formed in 1967, they contributed to the development of progressive rock, and by extension, symphonic rock. Their best-known recording is their 1967 single "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Although noted for its baroque and classical influence, Procol Harum's music also embraces the blues, R&B and soul. In October 2012, the band was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but were unsuccessful on this occasion.

Procol Harum, did visit Sweden for a couple of shows, where one stop was Stockholm and Circus, a show where my expectations was kinda low. But I must say I got amazed how well the songs was played and I could say no one hit wonder here, even if I only could name two songs from them if someone would ask me. But with a monster hit as "A Whiter Shade of Pale", the song almost every adult should know and the other I could name was "Pandoras Box" then you could pretty fast figure out what the heck will the guys play during the evening if the show time is set to 2h15min?

Well, if you make a mega version of the monster hit and play it a couple of times then, hell yeah but that would probably not happen, they had a proper setlist (see below) of Procol Harum tunes and yes some of them was pretty good for a youngster as me. So I could say I like some of the tunes and when I listen to the tunes on Spotify I must say, this band made some cool stuff back in the time.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight

The Smashing Pumpkins is an American alternative rock band from Chicago, Illinois, created in 1988. Formed by frontman Billy Corgan (lead vocals, lead guitar) and James Iha (rhythm guitar), the band has included Jimmy Chamberlin (drums), D'arcy Wretzky (bass guitar), Melissa Auf der Maur (bass guitar), and currently includes Mike Byrne (drums), Nicole Fiorentino (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Jeff Schroeder (rhythm guitar) among its membership.

The band did a really good gig for just a half-full Circus, almost tragic to see, was it a completely unknown gig? or was it just wrong placed amidst the holiday times? Support for the evening was Beware of darkness

Anyway, here is a few pictures:

Todays tune "Tonight, Tonight" is a song written by the band's frontman, Billy Corgan. It was the fourth single and second track from their third album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and was released in April 1996.

A shorter acoustic version of the song, titled "Tonite Reprise", was included as a B-side to the single and on the triple LP version of Mellon Collie. This single also later appeared in an extended form on the box set The Aeroplane Flies High. Additionally, the song appears on the band's greatest hits release, Rotten Apples.

Lucinda Williams - Copenhagen

This Sunday stood Lucinda Williams at Circus Scene and gave us a really nice, intimate evening of classic Americana. The sound was brilliant, the performance was really good. Everything was wonderfully unadorned, petite backline and the band was slimmed to only guitarist Doug Pettibone and bassist Dave Sutton. One evening, as I are likely to remember for long time.

Lucinda Williams (born January 26, 1953) is an American rock, folk, blues, and country music singer and songwriter.

She recorded her first albums in 1978 and 1980 in a traditional country and blues style and received very little attention from radio, the media, or the public. In 1988, she released her self-titled album, Lucinda Williams. This release featured "Passionate Kisses," a song later recorded by Mary Chapin Carpenter which garnered Lucinda her first Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1994.

Known for working slowly, Lucinda recorded and released only one other album in the next several years (Sweet Old World in 1992) before her greatest success came in 1998 with Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. This album presented a broader scope of songs that fused rock, blues, country, and Americana into a more distinctive style that still managed to remain consistent and commercial in sound. It went gold and earned Lucinda another Grammy while being universally acclaimed by critics. Since Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, she has released a string of albums that have also been critically acclaimed, though none have sold in the numbers of her 1998 breakthrough. She was also named "America's best songwriter" by TIME magazine in 2002.

Here are a few pictures:

Todays tune "Copenhagen" is taken from the tenth studio album "Blessed", her eleventh album overall. It was released in 2011 on Lost Highway Records and includes guest appearances by Elvis Costello and Matthew Sweet. The song itself is a tribute to a close friend who passed away when Lucinda was out on tour in Europe.

Sarah Dawn Finer - Kärleksvisan

A few days ago it was time for a new gig, this time it was Swedish Sarah Dawn Finer who would perform at the Circus here in the Stockholm. An artist that I think I run into quite often in different contexts, an artist that I personally probably never listen to or would ever think to do that. Not that I dislike what she does or stands for, it's just not my thing, but must admit that she sings incredibly beautiful. The show at Circus was something completely different than what I'm used to. This time it was "Sarah" who stood in the center, it was "Sarah" who was the star.  Her performance was excellent, almost as if I got goose bumps.

Sarah Dawn Finer, born 14 September 1981 in Stockholm, Sweden, is a singer, songwriter and actress. Her father is from the United Kingdom (London), and her mother from USA (New York), but she is born and raised in Sweden. Dawn is her middle name, and Finer her surname.

Anyway, this lady has made a song called "Kärleksvisan", I want to dedicate this to my wife "Thetania" who wears her hair off on Eurovision down in Malmö.

Tourdates:

19 april – Halmstad, Teatern
20 april – Örebro, Conventum
25 april – Skellefteå, Folkparken
26 april – Luleå, Kulturens Hus
27 april – Umeå, Idunteatern
28 april – Sundsvall, Tonhallen

Thåström - Axel Landqvists Park

Last week I got a chance to see Thåström live again, this was probably the fiftyeleven time. Have actually lost count. But it does not matter for this time it was fucking fantastic, what a gig, quite incredible, thank you "Brenge". Joakim ”Pimme” Thåström only gets better the older he gets. The sound was brilliant, thank you Björn Lehnberg, the light was a beautiful, thank you Morgan Brown. The choice of tracks was very good. But in the end happened something strange, the Swedish poet Bruno K. Öijer enters and makes two poetic number that is very odd.

Thåströms Scandinavian tour ends on 18 April, when it ends in Helsinki. If you get hold of a ticket, do not talk about where you store it. This tour is hardvalue ticketwise, and what you will see is Thåström at the peak of his career. It does not get better than this.
