Steve Von Till - Indifferent Eyes

Over the course of recent time, an aching, growing void has developed where our normal way of life has resided. Uncertainty abounds, and Steve Von Till's "No Wilderness Deep Enough" provides a voice of existential wisdom and experience to offer comfort and perspective in an era of uncharted territory. These six pieces of music shape a hallucinatory landscape of sound that plumbs the depths of the natural world's mysteries and uncertainties—questions that have vexed humanity since the dawn of time asked anew amidst a backdrop that's as haunting as it is holistic.

Von Till’s fifth solo album is a swirling and iridescent blend of ambient, neo-classical, and gothic Americana that swan-dives into the darkness of modern life, with the resulting emergence a sonic document of rural psychedelia that transcends the physical world—towards a greater spiritual acceptance that connects naturalism, spiritualism, and the corporeal form.

Von Till has charted an extraordinary musical path over the last several decades, from his main duties as singer and guitarist of the boundary-breaking NEUROSIS to the psychedelic music of his HARVESTMAN project and the unique folks songs he's released under his own name.

But "No Wilderness Deep Enough" is truly like nothing you've ever heard from him before—an album that's devastatingly beautiful and overwhelming in its scope, reminiscent of the tragic ecstasy of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' recent work as well as the borderless ambient music pioneered by Brian Eno, late composer Jóhann Jóhannsson's glacial compositions, and the electronic mutations of Coil.

With a foundation of simple melancholy piano chord progressions embellished with mellotron, cello, french horn and electronic treatments Von Till's scorched ache spreads across the terrain of No Wilderness Deep Enough like a brushfire, adding a tactile level to his sonic creation as well as an inviting level of friction to the burning beauty painted across the album's framework.

"No Wilderness Deep Enough" was recorded and mixed by Randall Dunn at Flora Recording and Playback. Mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service. The album was released August 7, 2020.

Today's tune "Indifferent Eyes" is taken from "No Wilderness Deep Enough", enjoy!

Spectral Lore & Mare Cognitum - Mars

Friday, dark clouds in the sky, hold my hand and prepare your brains for a massive solar system explosion, as this release is nothing that you should take lightly.

Veterans from countless successful releases including a seminal split album (“Sol”, 2013) that cemented their friendship and earned them unconditioned esteem and love from the atmospheric black metal aficionados, SPECTRAL LORE's sole member Ayloss and Jacob Buczarski from MARE COGNITUM join forces once again for another mystical trip through the stars. Monumental and daring in its length and scope, "Wanderers: Astrology Of The Nine" is a thematic journey through our solar system, illustrating and anthropomorphizing it into mythology which parallels our own humanity with the science of these mysterious formations.

“Inspired by Gustav Holst's Planets suite, we continue the exploration we began many years ago with 'Sol',” explain the artists; “we traverse outwards from the sun to each planet, weaving fables through a synthesis of their distinct physical features and a mythical personhood representing these features.”

Graced with a wondrous cover painting by the inimitable Elijah Tamu, “Wanderers: Astrology Of The Nine” is nothing but a never ending quest for mankind's cosmic origins, a celestial and philosophical observation on the notes of MARE COGNITUM and SPECTRAL LORE's music, perfectly in the balance between progressive yet furious black metal, and moments of ecstatic, melodic beauty. “While we wish to capture the awe of the raw, natural beauty of our cosmic surroundings, we have also created our own cosmically inspired lore with each planet as our muse,” say Ayloss and Buczarski; ”therefore, each track is a narrative which represents our admiration for each cosmic entity: the psychic manifestations that were conjured through our own wonder of the majestic planetary system we call home.”

“Wanderers: Astrology Of The Nine” was released March 13, 2020

Today's tune "Mars" is an exotic razor-sharp piece, full och aggression and darkness and totally crushing, enjoy!

Karg - La Tristesse Durera Toujours

For "Dornenvögel" mastermind J.J. (vocalist of HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY) invited a lot of guest musicians from Lunar Aurora, DOWNFALL OF GAIA to participate with guest vocals on the album.

It is for sure the most diverse album that KARG wrote so far. It’s a steady up and down of negative and melancholic feelings and short glimpses of hope, recited in a quite hysteric way. Every song is a separate, private ,"Dornenvögel" (which is a metaphor in this connection) to KARG, every song treats a different chapter. That’s why the album is called ,"Dornenvögel". A collection of dramas, one followed by the other.”

KARG was founded back in the summer of 2006 as a one-man project. Between 2010 & 2014 KARG was fully formed as a band to play gigs, formally in Germany, Austria and Central Europe. In the years till 2018 KARG was, like in its beginning, held as a one-man project and released two more albums. With the release of KARGs sixth studio album "Dornenvögel".

The musical style of KARG is a furious, hysteric mixture of Atmospheric Black Metal and a huge load of Post Rock, with influences also from Grunge, Shoegaze and Post Punk. The influences from other genres than Black Metal evolved more and more within the last few years but were there in abridged form since day one. Textual KARG always was about the more melancholic side of life, such as broken relationships, lost love, estrangement, drug abuse, loss or suicide thoughts and depression. In contrast to many other bands KARGs lyrics are as equal important than its music is.

Today's tune "La Tristesse Durera Toujours" is taken from the album "Dornenvögel". Released on November 16th, 2018 through AOP Records. Featuring guests vocals of Dominik from DOWNFALL OF GAIA

Black Math Horseman - Barren Cause

A crack in the firmament, a rustling in the pines. The forest’s equilibrium is shattered beneath the hooves of antiquity. Proscribed by the egoists, all the old sacraments have been performed - a complete transference of potency. The air hisses with mercury and magnetism. Fire swallows the land. In stillness they wait as the sky bleeds white, players in a proto-mythic drama with outcome unknown. (Not the band, though - that would be cheesy.)

This information is as useful or useless as anyone chooses. All else - the sound, the color, the shape of things, the light and shade of narrative and molecular dispensation - is left to the atmosphere. It’s here and then it’s gone. It’s always there. Or maybe it was never there, not ever. It’s an imagined memory, the ultimate false dawn. A psychic eclipse that blinds the mind’s eye. How’s that for high melodrama, for existential cryptography? Sometimes, vagueness and vagaries have to suffice.

For those who prefer terra firma, though? Call it ambient post-doom. Call it alchemic psych-rock, only without all those annoying freeform guitar freakouts. Call it “pure spirits by ritual dismemberment.” Either way, BLACK MATH HORSEMAN is Sera Timms (bass/vocals) (IDES OF GEMINI) , Ian Barry (guitar) Bryan Tulao (guitar) and Sasha Popovic (drums). They are from Los Angeles. Their 2009 debut album, Wyllt, was recorded and produced by desert guru Scott Reeder (Kyuss, Unida).

Todays tune "Barren Cause" is taken from their debut album "Wyllt"

Crippled Black Phoenix - Laying Traps

From the United Kingdom we find the Neo-Psychedelia Post-Rockers CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX started in 2004 when the multi-instrumentalist Justin Greaves (formerly the drummer of IRON MONKEY, ELECTRIC WIZARD, TEETH OF LIONS RULE THE DIVINE, THE VARUKERS, etc..) picked up a borrowed guitar and began to make simple demos. 11 years, 7 critically acclaimed albums and quite a few line-up changes later Crippled Black Phoenix is a force to reckoned with.

Several musicians have contributed to CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIXs albums and played with them during their live shows.

They do not fit in to any easily found musical category, instead they blaze their own trail using the influences and knowledge gained over a lifetime of playing and performing.

Current members:

Justin Greaves – electric guitar, drums, saw, keyboard, acoustic guitar, banjo, effects, samples
Daniel Änghede - Vocals, electric guitar
Mark Furnevall – synthesizer, keyboards, backing vocals
Ben Wilsker – drums
Daisy Chapman - Piano, Vocals

Todays tune "Laying Traps" is taken from the fifth album (Mankind) The Crafty Ape, released January 30, 2012. The thematic focus for this album is firmly planted in the corruption of mankind and injustice, but also ultimately in the hope that all is not lost, and that there's a common thread connecting people of like-minds wherever you may travel. The music and themes have been created as to represent the world inside and outside of the mind, with no compromise.

On (Mankind) The Crafty Ape the band showcases a new level of focus, and that's not to say there was a lack of focus on previous efforts, it simply says that the methods and attitude in making the new album are another move toward finding the total uncompromised potential within the music.

Valerian Swing - Le Roi Cremeux

To find new bands are always fun, to find bands that really appeals to one even more enjoyable. By coincidence, I ran into this band, highly interesting, I must say, an order of their new on vinyl will be made as soon as I return home. So this will be a Tune Of The Day tip of a new record.

These guys hail from Italy and are certainly new to most listeners around here. The band was formed in Correggio (Italy), a few years ago. Valerian Swing are an instrumental band with occasional vocals, always driven by an eclectic and experimental musical vision. It’s based loosely on a lot of that instrumental/post-rock type stuff, but with an aggressive and frantic take on it. It’s tight and dynamic.

They released a 4 tracks Ep in 2007 and one year after the debut album: "Draining Planning For Ears Reflectors”. The new and latest record “A Sailor Lost Around The Earth” was recorded and produced by Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Botch, ISIS, Minus The Bear) at Red Room in Seattle, WA.

Guest appearance in their new record is the internationally acclaimed trombonist Gianluca Petrella.

SubSuburban Recording Company take care of the vinyl release which included a 7” with special remixes from Simon Scott (former Slowdive) and Isan.

Todays tune is ”Le Roi Cremeux”, taken from their latest and 2011 release “A Sailor Lost Around The Earth”

"Le Roi Cremeux” sound only!

The Man-Eating Tree - Out Of The Wind

The Man-Eating Tree Is a Finnish five-piece band, performing atmospheric metal music.

The seed of the new band was planted when Vesa Ranta, having taken a break from music after Sentenced, began to overcome his post-Sentenced battle fatigue and lack of musical motivation. The idea of a new band – or bands – was eventually brainstormed over a period of time between Vesa and his friends, including gentlemen Miika Tenkula, Aaron Rantonen, Janne Markus and Mikko Uusimaa. Plans were made reality in 2009; the outfit was completed by the addition of Tuomas Tuominen as a vocalist and Heidi Määttä as a keyboard player. First demo recordings were made in the spring and summer of 2009.

The bulk of compositions are the origin of Janne Markus, with some contribution also from Aaron Rantonen. Much of the lyrical input is contributed by Tuomas Tuominen. These are the building blocks of the music, which is finally arranged hands-on at the band house by the entire group:

Tuomas Tuominen – Vocals
Janne Markus – Guitars
Mikko Uusimaa – Bass
Heidi Määttä – Keyboards
Vesa Ranta – Drums

As you may already have noted this is a very interesting line-up. How does this sound then, well the little I manage to listen to, sounds very interesting, well-played and mysterious, i do have a bit hard to take the signing part, but i think it will work out the more you listen and allow it to sound like it does, but I like this somehow. Below, you have their latest single and video, listen and judge for yourself.

Todays tune "Out Of The Wind" is taken from The Man-Eating Tree debut album "Vine" Enjoy

Man-eating tree can refer to any of various legendary or cryptid carnivorous plants that are large enough to kill and consume a person or other large animal. In actuality, the carnivorous plant with the largest known traps is probably Nepenthes rajah, which produces pitchers up to 38 cm (15 in) tall with a volume of up to 3.5 litres

VAST - Tattoo of Your Name

VAST is comprised of one man and one man only: Jon Crosby. The songwriter grew up in Humboldt County, CA, and was profiled as a promising guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine at the age of 13.

He was nearly signed to the guitar-based label Shrapnel, but he turned down the offer and focused on honing his songwriting chops instead. Crosby soon left high school to do home study, and he began assembling a band in order to perform some demos he recorded all by himself, under the name VAST. Although he was able to play shows, the band proved to be a revolving door of members, with Crosby serving as the frontman and focal point.

The acronym VAST stands for Visual Audio Sensory Theater and is the main creation of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jon Crosby.

Todays tune is take from his fifth album "April" and was released in October 16, 2007. April differs greatly from past VAST albums in sound. Quiet ambient electronics play behind large acoustic guitars and Crosby's voice with drums to lead the rhythm.

Regarding the album, Crosby said "Some people may think all VAST albums are about loss but I would say the first album was about conflict, the second about longing for freedom, and the third about beauty. These songs were written during a time in my life were I was going through the deep loss of my lover and the loss of all my money from bad deals and bad labels. The result was that I was down and didn't treat myself very well.

I put all those feelings into this record and it’s something I’m very proud of. While it’s true that I will always feel most proud of my latest effort, I do however feel that this record comes from my heart and that in itself makes it a success if only artistic. I only have a few albums like this in me. This and my first album are my favorite albums to date."

There are two versions of the album, Retail and Online, both featuring different track listing and different mixes. However, the Retail version is the final, mastered mix of the release.

Releases:

* Visual Audio Sensory Theater (1998) Elektra
* Music for People (2000) Elektra
* Nude (2004) 456 Entertainment / SPV
* Turquoise & Crimson (2006) 2blossoms
