Dool - Sulphur & Starlight

After a long day at work, yes I have an adult job right now, but only a small project, finished on Friday, but at least, a job in these times. Coming home, out with the dogs, showering, cooking dinner, eating and breathing a bit with a cup of coffee, discovering that I am home alone. So guess what ... the stereo goes on, up with a Vinyl, plays the latest with Joe Bonamassa, swings on well, but will return with this later on, needs a few more laps. Playing a few others before the last one gets on before it's all croweded again.

Got back to the Dutch rock band DOOL and the record "Summerland", a freaking great album. The album was nominated as "Record Of The Week" back in May this year, read about it here https://tuneoftheday.blogspot.com/2020/05/dool-summerland.html.

Today's tune "Sulphur & Starlight" is the opening tune from the album "Summerland", released on April 10th, 2020. It's a marvelous tune that combining psych metal, ’90s alt rock, 20's pop and a touch of prog into a truly singular sound. Enjoy!

Rope Sect - The Great Flood

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and everything that is in the earth shall die."
Genesis 6:17

"The Great Flood" is the debut album from Germany's deathrock outfit ROPE SECT.

ROPE SECT quietly but auspiciously debuted in 2017 with their first EP, "Personae Ingratae", followed by the 7-inch Proselytes and is something of a "dark horse" for the label Iron Bonehead, ROPE SECT's disarmingly Spartan style of deathrock soon found fervent followers around the globe, and word-of-mouth momentum built from there.

With "The Great Flood" they proving that there were yet further twists to the trio's vast array of sounds and textures. The album is full of great melodies, shimmering atmosphere, clanging minimalism, sharp oscillations, and unforeseen insertions. An album that didn't hook me after the first spin, after a few turns and a relaxed mind it meanders through all obstacles of real piles of cast emotions that are in the way during this crazy time, thoughts about the future, work, and family, you understand what I mean. Each of these ten tunes touches in a way that it almost gives me shiver in ten different ways, both good and bad. The album starts with a quote from scripture Genesis 6:17 (the quote from the beginning of the post), that everything will die, an up-tempo goth rocker and shows an excellent start to the album. The rest of the tunes follows the same path, like "Rope Of The Just" with its great saturated guitars, hefty drumming, round and steady bass line, a melancholic vocal loop. The band slows down and take a calmer and more laid back approach in "Eleutheria". The guitar-based "Hiraeth", opens up with some hefty riffage, great rhythmic texture, almost in a punk rock way until the melancholic vocal steps in, and the tempo slow's down a bit and speed's up in the chorus. The same palette is used in "Flood Flower" and here Mat "Kvohst" McNerney steps in and grabs the mic, he also sings on "Prison Of You". "The Underground Paradise" is a haunting piece of tune, a lovely melody with a gothic charm that effortlessly draws you in. The instrumental "Non Serviemus" is a great rocker but gets a little lonely without the vocal. The album closes with the folky tune "Diluvian Darkness", with its waltzy intro, energy, and haunting melody makes it a perfect ending of the already stunning album. The album is pretty easy to listen to, but harder to analyze and understand.

Mat "Kvohst" McNerney (HEXVESSEL/GRAVE PLEASURES) contributes lyrics and guest vocals on two tunes. Mastering courtesy of HORRENDOUS Damian Herring. Released August 12, 2020

Dealing with ROPE SECT is joining a dance near the abyss, a walk on ruins, a final revel in the face of man's downfall, and craving for the ultimate freedom that either relieves or destroys you. Venerate the rope, fear the rope.

Sum: The debut album for the DARK ages.

Inmesher - Guitars, drums, lyrics & vocals
Harbinger - Bass
Gaarentwynder - Guitars
Redeemer - Drums

Blaze Of Perdition - With Madman's Faith

Existing at the forefront of the Polish black metal movement, BLAZE OF PERDITION returned with their fifth full-length, "The Harrowing Of Hearts" – their most urgent, refined, dynamic and accomplished work to date. Richly layered, it is also their most textured release, and they dive ever deeper into the themes they have been exploring since dropping their debut full-length in 2010, "Towards The Blaze Of Perdition".

BLAZE OF PERDITION was formed in 2007 by the guitarist XCIII. The band started its publishing activity by releasing a split album with PSEUDOGOD (Ru) "In The Void And Serpent, The Spirit Is One" in 2009. Although beginnings were strongly influenced by the so-called orthodox BM scene, with "Near Death Revelations", the band started looking for broader ways of expression, mixing their traditional style with different kind of influences from beyond the genre.

Line-up changed numerous times, but the core remained intact, with its general direction by XCIII and lyrical/conceptual themes by Sonneillon. Final shape of the songs, especially later ones, is an effect of mutual effort by all band members who offered their ideas and arrangements, although filtered by XCIII to keep the music consistent.

November 2nd 2013 turned out to be tragic. Car accident took life of the bass player 23 and left Sonneillon and Vizun (drummer) severely injured. Unfortunately, Sonneillon couldn't continue any live activity due to his serious health condition, but remained a core member responsible for the studio vocals, lyrics, graphic design and PR.

Line Up:
S.: Vocals / Lyric
XCIII: Guitar / Lyrics / Songwriting
M.R.: Guitar
DQ: Drums

BLAZE OF PERDITION released their fifth full-length album "The Harrowing Of Hearts" on February 14, 2020. This time the focus is on the occult, satanism, Luciferianism. They put us in Christ's shoes on a metaphorical journey into one's soul to face and come to terms with whatever it holds, very close to the Jungian concept of shadow integration mentioned here and there on our previous album.

Working with the same producer they've been teaming with since 2013 and with artwork designed by Izabela Grabda, every aspect of "The Harrowing Of Hearts" has come together as intended, and with Metal Blade now behind them the band is now ready to work their asses off to spread their name even further. It's also safe to say the members of BLAZE OF PERDITION don't feel like they have anything to prove going into 2020.

Today's tune "With Madman's Faith" is taken from the band's latest album "The Harrowing Of Hearts", The tune tells a story of doubt and hesitation, and asks if any pursuits for wisdom bring us serenity and closure or are just taunting rabbit holes with no end or destination at all - but it also hints that it's not the destination but the journey itself that is what is ultimately important. enjoy!

Dool • Summerland

Monday and it's time for "Record Of The Week".

For this week we have the long-anticipated release of their sophomore album "Summerland" by the Netherlands most notorious rock musicians have gathered to form DOOL, a dark rock band featuring drummer Micha Haring from celebrated cult rockers THE DEVILS BLOOD and the country's most infamous rock singer, the striking Ryanne van Dorst along with the two guitarists, Nick Polak (GOLD) and Omar Iskandr (EDEN TO ASHES, TURIA) and the bass player JB Van Der Wal (HERDER, ABORTED).

"Summerland" was recorded by Martin Ehrencrona (TRIBULATION, IN SOLITUDE) and mixed by CULT OF LUNAs Magnus Lindberg. Following the release, the band was going to play at Roadburn Festival’s main stage as a premiere show, followed by a European headline tour late April/May, both have been canceled.

"Summerland" is a dark piece, heavy lyrics but musically kinda soft, laidback, psychedelic, very dynamic, and grand. It is a fairly strenuous journey that you will enter, the songs themselves are also quite widespread. A lot of twists and turns so at it's first listening, it may be a little difficult to grasp and understand its meaning. Give it a few more spins and the heavens will open and hopefully, the token falls down. One thing is clear that they have changed the route towards a different dimension. They bend their musical nurture to their own creation, searching for a true identity.

The album touches many different genres over its playtime of fifty-four minutes spread over nine tunes, and during this time you will get some SISTERS OF MERCY, RUSH, MUSE, KILLING JOKE, GHOST and KATATONIA but all the pieces from their inspirations are used sparely to create a sound that will fascinate the listener, and it works great as the sound is really good and I have to raise my hand to van Dorst vocals that are just incredible on this album.

The album opens up with the two singles "Sulphur & Starlight" and "Wolf Moon" were both follow the same path where the left off with the debut. Both are radio-friendly tunes with catchy lyrics and a big atmosphere. and the mystery and mournfulness piece "Summerland" that in the end wakes up and serves a beautiful and very melodic dual guitar solo. To the grunge rocker "A Glass Forest" is an interesting tune that steps out from the box a little. Back in order when the post-metal tune "The Well’s Run Dry", enters the room. "Be Your Sins" is a great rocker with a cool hook that gives high five to a Swedish rock band until it's time for the grandiose ending in "Dust & Shadow". It's a bold release by the band. If it gets some attention it will surely gain some success. I will follow their path into the future as I do like what I hear.

Sum: A glorious release by DOOL.

Today's tune "Wolf Moon" is taken from "Summerland", the album was released on April 10th, 2020. "Wolf Moon’ is a song about alternative realities, created by choice and chance. In the video, we explore these different realities, while at the same time serenading the 90s music videos we grew up with and still very much adore. The video is directed by Nina Spiering and shot by Robijn Voshol", enjoy!
