DeWolff - Wolffpack

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The Dutch psychedelic Southern blues rockers DEWOLFF returned earlier this year with a new album "Wolffpack".

I'm sorry to say, but this is another record that had to stand and wait kindly in the album box with newcomers, with a constant flood of new records, it's easy to miss some. I do not know why this one, I guess I have to blame temporary confusion, but now it's here, better late than never.

The kaleidoscopic warriors were not long into their 2019 "Tascam Tapes" European Tour when the Covid19 pandemic broke and they, like so many others, had to turn back and head home. However, DEWOLFF is not a band to sit still. When it came to studio album number nine, they had no intention of just waiting for things to blow over.

DEWOLFF is a very creative bunch of guys that over the past three years they have released "Thrust" (2018), "Live & Outta Sight II" (2019) and "Tascam Tapes" (2020) – and despite the pandemic cutting short their touring last year the trio set about creating "Wolffpack", an antidote to the shoestring Tascam Tapes.

"Wolffpack" have been been created in their studio bunker in the Medieval town of Utrecht, The Netherlands. The album may feel a bit scattered to new listeners, but with a wide range of their previous creations where all styles are used again, a bit like the raisins from their own cake are picked. So it will be a bit difficult to decide what kind of genre we really get served here. Anyhow, this is a great spin where the brothers Pablo and Luka van de Poel and Robin Piso have created another majestic record. Where they are experimenting with soundscapes, fuzzy riffing, swamp-rock with horse shoe vibes, infectionasied melodies that makes you as a listner a happy human beening.

The album opens up with a soulful funk rocker of "Yes You Do", a tune that is very catchy. Followed in the same vein in "Treasure City Moonchild", where the third song "Do Me" is a power ballad, a really beautiful one. "Sweet Loretta" is a bluesy one and has a pretty interesting story about "Loretta, the protagonist's childhood sweetheart. She has a rich dad, but he's really conservative, and so she can only inherit his money if she marries a man. But she's lesbian. So, the protagonist, who's also out for this old guy's money, suggests they play pretend and marry so they can split the money." "Half Of Your Love" is another funky, light disco one. Great vibe that get's your legs move. "Lady J" has some cool lyrics that are based on the idea that Lady Justice seems to have a scale that dosen't measure the "weight" of your crime but the tone of your skin. The tune have a great 70s groove. "Roll Up The Rise" is a car driving tune, think Cadillac. The blusey fuzzed-up "Bona Fide" is a thrill and "R U My Saviour" continues but with added horns to spice it up a bit. The album closes up with the folk bluesih forlorn "Hope Train", inspired by Colson Whitehead’s brilliant, Pulitzer winning novel. DEWOLFF really experimenting with hazy soundscapes, loose fizzy riffs, nice and well thought lyrics and marvelous groovy melodies to keep the intrest high. Highly Recomended! Released by Mascot Label Group on 5 February 2021

Sum: A really creative release by these Dutch blues rockers.

Today's tune "Yes You Do", taken from the album "Wolffpack", enjoy!

Dool - Sulphur & Starlight

After a long day at work, yes I have an adult job right now, but only a small project, finished on Friday, but at least, a job in these times. Coming home, out with the dogs, showering, cooking dinner, eating and breathing a bit with a cup of coffee, discovering that I am home alone. So guess what ... the stereo goes on, up with a Vinyl, plays the latest with Joe Bonamassa, swings on well, but will return with this later on, needs a few more laps. Playing a few others before the last one gets on before it's all croweded again.

Got back to the Dutch rock band DOOL and the record "Summerland", a freaking great album. The album was nominated as "Record Of The Week" back in May this year, read about it here https://tuneoftheday.blogspot.com/2020/05/dool-summerland.html.

Today's tune "Sulphur & Starlight" is the opening tune from the album "Summerland", released on April 10th, 2020. It's a marvelous tune that combining psych metal, ’90s alt rock, 20's pop and a touch of prog into a truly singular sound. Enjoy!

Turia - Storm

We continue in the colorful country with the Dutch three-piece Atmospheric black metal band TURIA. They have released two full-length albums and a handful of splits since their inception in the winter of 2014. The third studio album "Degen Van Licht" the title translates to "Sword Of Light" is the latest and was released on February 14, 2020 through Haeresis Noviomagi and Eisenwald.

The band aims to evoke gripping black metal, stripped to its bare necessities. Utilizing a minimal setup of drums and guitar they bring to life a mirage of sound while anguished screams drag the listener into a vastness of desolation.

"Degen Van Licht" is an ode to the ageless lure of the unyielding mountains, and an exploration of the sweltering warmth which encompasses these heights every summer. Crackling green pastures full of life morph into scorching fields of withered grass and decaying alpine herbs. Shrieks of lammergeiers prowling for the bones of decomposing creatures reverberate throughout the high summits. The purgatory potential of the massif is revealed when death prevails. Witnessing these changes and enduring the delirious heat formed the basis for “Degen van Licht”. The maniacal drumming, tormented screams and spectral guitars coalesce into a sound that will be familiar for long‑time followers of the band, while further developing their signature psychedelic aural structures.

TURIA is:
T voice
O guitar
J drums

TURIA is another band that is very easy to fall in love with.

Today's tune "Storm" is taken from the album "Degen Van Licht". The footage was taken from "The Epic Of Everest" (1924).

Fluisteraars - Bloem

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Bloem" is the third full-length album from the Netherlands atmospheric black metal band FLUISTERAARS.

Perhaps as an effect of the rural isolation and folkloric mysticism of the region where the band has its roots, FLUISTERAARS has a very distinctive style: raw atmospherics molded into blackened psychedelic folk-rock. With three full-length albums in their pocket, the band has established itself as an important force in the Dutch black metal landscape.

From the beginning, FLUISTERAARS has been known to experiment with the influences of psychedelic folk. On "Bloem", this input is lifted into a realm of psyched-out rural black metal mysticism. In parts reminding the listener of old psychedelic rock by the likes THE ELECTRIC PRUNES, the minimal but extremely effective orchestration in some parts even touches on a production style reminiscent of Lee Hazlewood. However, what FLUISTERAARS offer here are not the very long and drawn-out compositions by which they are perhaps more well known, but captivating and moving songs, nowhere crossing the eight-minute mark. Five tunes and an enjoyable playing time of thirty-three minutes. Here you get everything from excellent compositions of big atmosphere, beautiful melodies with spellbound fairytale mysticism to blast beats and heavy riffage, with deep and dark vocals with big emotions and lyrics in band’s native Dutch. The black metal repetitiveness is used with a great balance to keep it enjoyable and repetition friendly for the listener as the tunes flow easily in my brain. The production is very good and the instruments sound excellent, the vinyl spins like a cuddly cat, the presence of tambourine and timpani just add an extra spice to an already fantastic record.

Just add the needle to the album and listen to the first track "Tere Muur", nasty black metal vocals, blast beats, furious guitars that spread on the ground like flower seeds and the same formula is used in "Nasleep" but here the steps outside the normality are beginning to become clearer and clearer. "Eeuwige Ram" is a melodic beauty with screams that reminds me of SOLSTAFIR, the atmosphere is delightful where the melody is etched slowly into the skin. "Vlek" is a monstrous piece with the best of two worlds, a harder and heavier approach to the half-speed beauty that looses up the bodies Endorphins. The album closer is the powerful "Maanruïne" that follows the same formula with mixing the chaotic way with the beauty, here we also get some species with a wind instrument and tambourine. Each of the five songs on "Bloem" stands out on its own and makes this a grandiose album that will please me as a listener for a long time.

"Bloem" was tracked at E-Sound Studios during May 2019, with recording and Mix by T. Cochrane. Mastered by Wessel Oltheten. The album was released February 28, 2020. The patriotic flower-themed cover art of "Bloem" shows that they are truly Dutch in all means.

FLUISTERAARS are:
B. Mollema - vocals, and lyrics
M. Koops - drums, bass, guitar, piano, tambourine, and timpani
T. Cochrane - trumpet and trombone

Sum: A wonderful record to lose yourself.

Today's tune "Vlek" is taken from "Bloem", enjoy!

Dool • Summerland

Monday and it's time for "Record Of The Week".

For this week we have the long-anticipated release of their sophomore album "Summerland" by the Netherlands most notorious rock musicians have gathered to form DOOL, a dark rock band featuring drummer Micha Haring from celebrated cult rockers THE DEVILS BLOOD and the country's most infamous rock singer, the striking Ryanne van Dorst along with the two guitarists, Nick Polak (GOLD) and Omar Iskandr (EDEN TO ASHES, TURIA) and the bass player JB Van Der Wal (HERDER, ABORTED).

"Summerland" was recorded by Martin Ehrencrona (TRIBULATION, IN SOLITUDE) and mixed by CULT OF LUNAs Magnus Lindberg. Following the release, the band was going to play at Roadburn Festival’s main stage as a premiere show, followed by a European headline tour late April/May, both have been canceled.

"Summerland" is a dark piece, heavy lyrics but musically kinda soft, laidback, psychedelic, very dynamic, and grand. It is a fairly strenuous journey that you will enter, the songs themselves are also quite widespread. A lot of twists and turns so at it's first listening, it may be a little difficult to grasp and understand its meaning. Give it a few more spins and the heavens will open and hopefully, the token falls down. One thing is clear that they have changed the route towards a different dimension. They bend their musical nurture to their own creation, searching for a true identity.

The album touches many different genres over its playtime of fifty-four minutes spread over nine tunes, and during this time you will get some SISTERS OF MERCY, RUSH, MUSE, KILLING JOKE, GHOST and KATATONIA but all the pieces from their inspirations are used sparely to create a sound that will fascinate the listener, and it works great as the sound is really good and I have to raise my hand to van Dorst vocals that are just incredible on this album.

The album opens up with the two singles "Sulphur & Starlight" and "Wolf Moon" were both follow the same path where the left off with the debut. Both are radio-friendly tunes with catchy lyrics and a big atmosphere. and the mystery and mournfulness piece "Summerland" that in the end wakes up and serves a beautiful and very melodic dual guitar solo. To the grunge rocker "A Glass Forest" is an interesting tune that steps out from the box a little. Back in order when the post-metal tune "The Well’s Run Dry", enters the room. "Be Your Sins" is a great rocker with a cool hook that gives high five to a Swedish rock band until it's time for the grandiose ending in "Dust & Shadow". It's a bold release by the band. If it gets some attention it will surely gain some success. I will follow their path into the future as I do like what I hear.

Sum: A glorious release by DOOL.

Today's tune "Wolf Moon" is taken from "Summerland", the album was released on April 10th, 2020. "Wolf Moon’ is a song about alternative realities, created by choice and chance. In the video, we explore these different realities, while at the same time serenading the 90s music videos we grew up with and still very much adore. The video is directed by Nina Spiering and shot by Robijn Voshol", enjoy!

Dool - Love Like Blood

If there was one European rock band that raised more than a few eyebrows in the last two years, it is DOOL. The Dutch found their debut album "Here Now, There Then" in many "best of 2017" lists and reader polls, got it as Record Of The Week on July 2017, read it here! They have constantly touring the continent, playing every festival from Roadburn to Wacken, House Of The Holy to Graspop.

The "Love Like Blood" EP will shorten the wait for their second album with a cover of the eponymous KILLING JOKE classic and as well as live versions of "She Goat" and "In Her Darkest Hour" from Rock Hard Festival capturing DOOL's unbridled live power.

Singer/guitarist Ryanne van Dorst comments on the choice of the EP's lead track: "Apart from being a massive hit during our childhood years that was weaved into the very structure of our musical beings, "Love Like Blood" remains a gem to revisit over and over. And so we did on our first tour as a band, listening to it in the van, and started wondering what it would sound like without its signature staccato beat. Back home, we took the plunge and dived deep into its dreamy waters. After a few rehearsals, we started playing our version live and grew to it the more often we did. By now, it almost doesn't feel like a cover song anymore, so we decided to record and share it with you. Here's our tribute to one of the best songs ever written."

Featuring members of critically-acclaimed dark rock band THE DEVILS BLOOD and death rock group GOLD, DOOL is an explosive, unbridled force. The Dutch band radiates an undeniable raw energy that blends classic hard rock, gothic pop and psychedelic metal to create their own dynamic sound. Audibly influenced by bands such as SISTERS OF MERCY and SONIC YOUTH, DOOL bends these sounds to fit its own vision, giving birth to an ominous new entity. Led by striking singer Ryanne van Dorst (ELLE BANDITA) alongside guitarists Nick Polak (GOLD) and Reinier Vermeulen (THE NEW MEDIA), bassist Job van de Zande (THE DEVILS BLOOD, MALKOVICH) and drummer Micha Haring (THE DEVILS BLOOD, THE HANDS), DOOL has become a hotly-tipped underground buzz band on the strength of its captivating debut single, "Oweynagat" and a red hot live performance at this year’s Roadburn Festival, where the group exceeded expectations as the respected fest’s 2016 'Roadburn Introduces…' artist.

"Love Like Blood" was released May 17, 2019.

Enjoy today's cover!

DeWolff - Thrust

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Thrust" is the sixth album from the three-headed rock 'n roll monster DEWOLFF. The band was formed in the Deep South of Netherlands in 2007, when they were barely teenagers, by brothers Pablo (singer/guitarist) and Luka van de Poel (Drums) and Hammond organist Robin Piso. DEWOLFF was after Harvey Keitel's character, Winston Wolfe, in Pulp Fiction, their luscious and expansive neo-psychedelia saw them burst out of the city.

They have released 5 studio albums previously, all have catapulted them up the charts in their homeland. Whilst still in their teens they played the prestigious Paradiso in Amsterdam and took to the main stage at Pinkpop Festival in front of 10,000 fans, relentless touring followed, earmarking them as a formidable live act. Since then they've played to 30,000 at Lowlands Festival, 15,000 at Sziget, as well as Reeperbahn, Rockpalast, Rock Oz Arenas and supported THE BLACK KEYS, BLUES PILLS, TEN YEARS AFTER and DEEP PURPLE.

"Thrust" is a great record with a wide span in the blues-oriented rock that DEWOLFF has made a great footprint on over the years. On the album, they mix up Blues Rock with Country/Desert Rock, softer Pop Rock to Happy Funk Rock with a load of Seventies influences.

Big tunes like the opening "Big Talk" with it vibrating buzz tones, well-balanced vocal, funky drumming and whiny guitar to the more funkier rocker "California Burning" to the half paced soulful Blues ballad "Once In A Blue Moon" with a heartbreaking Hammond solo. "Double Crossing Man" is an energetic and catchy Boogie Rocker with Isaac Hayes baritone entries. "Tombstone Child" is a real catchy Rocker, excellent vocals and clever riffing. Atmospheric fuzzy melody in "Deceit & Woo", cool tune with an odd Blues break in the middle, swings with a charm. "Freeway Flight" is a beautiful and soft Blues piece. "Tragedy? Not Today" is a great gleefully tune from the past, classic American 70's riffing. "Sometimes" have a cool Low fi touch, Reggae tones with marvelous vocals. "Swain" is a hard driven piece, big and funky. "Outta Step & Ill At Ease", a real beauty closes the album, slow, folkish, heartful and emotionally.

Sum: "Thrust" is an excellent album that is worth your time, check it up.

"Thrust" was released on May 4th via Mascot Records.

Today's tune "Outta Step & Ill At Ease" is taken from "Thrust", "The tune is a very autobiographical song. It's about life on the road, being away from home and missing the ones you love. Touring is the most awesome thing in the world, but at times you can get drunk, fat, lonely and miserable. It was written in a hotel room in Madrid when I was feeling particularly drunk, fat, lonely and miserable. We got the idea of playing this song with as much musician friends as possible, firstly because we're on tour so often that we don't get the chance to play with all these wonderful people as much as we'd like to. And secondly, because it's an epic song that has to be played with an epic gang of people!” – Pablo van de Poel, enjoy!

Drive By Wire - Where Have You Been

On "Where Have You Been" the Dutch steamy rockers DRIVE BY WIRE offer you an intriguing and unique mixture of fuzz-laden heavy rock grooves accompanied by the trippy, hazy vocals of energetic front woman Simone Holsbeek.

A trip through a desolate desert landscape, the swampy river delta, home to the band, '70s hardrock and psychedelia. DRIVE BY WIRE manages to distill these inspirations into a warm organic sound with the urgency of '90s grunge, the contagious riff-driven groove of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and delicious hypnotic heavy-ness such as BLACK SABBATH.

DRIVE BY WIRE Consist of:

Simone Holsbeek
Alwin Wubben
Jerome Miedendorp de Bie
Marcel Zerb

Today's tune "Where Have You Been" taken from the latest album "Spellbound", please don't just stand there, click on the video or the Spotify link for god sake, enjoy!

DeWolff - Sugar Moon

DEWOLFF is a three-headed rock ’n roll monster from the Netherlands’ Deep South: it’s a fire-breathing love child of the great Rock bands from the 1970’s and psychedelic cosmic radiation from the future. DEWOLFF was formed in 2007 by singer/guitarist Pablo van de Poel, brother/drummer Luka van de Poel and Hammond organist Robin Piso, and has grown to be one of the greatest live acts around. It’s Leon Russell meets DEEP PURPLE, BLACK KEYS meet ALLMAN BROTHERS. But above all, DEWOLFF sounds like DeWolff; an old soul in a young body; an eccentric and very hard-rocking young band that has already released six studio albums and a live album. Seeing DeWolff live is an experience one will never forget: it’s a mixture of inexhaustible energy, great musicianship, contagious enthusiasm and a play-like-it’s-your-last-show-mentality that seems pretty rare nowadays.

On June the 6th they announced that "we started recording our 7th album!"

Today's tune "Sugar Moon" is taken from the latest album "ROUX-GA-ROUX"

NO MAN'S VALLEY is a band of brothers strongly forged through their love of music, hailing from Horst, Netherlands and playing a mixture of Psychedelic blues-infused organ wave rock. Where the musical shapeshifter is dark, brooding and melancholic.

Today's tune "Kill The Bees" are taken from the bands debut album "Time Travel"

Birth Of Joy - You Got Me Howling

Having relentlessly toured Europe (and ok, also a little bit in America and Africa), fast rising Dutch psychedelic rockers BIRTH OF JOY are without doubt a proven live rock sensation! A staggering 450 shows chalked up in the last 3 years immediately recalls the legendary rock n roll bands of the golden era, and demonstrates that BIRTH OF JOY is a none-stop fireball of energy. The band is a fully oiled machine dripping in blood, sweat and true rock&roll!

Although influenced by 60/70s psychedelica and blues, you won’t have the feeling being sucked into an old dusty Persian tapestry bought at your local thrift shop. Sure, there are psychotic jams, but with peppering their sound with a modern twist of Stoner, Grunge and Punk (including the attitude) the threesome instead creates a lip-smacking sound of their very own, and ensures BIRTH OF JOY is no straight-forward retro-trip.

With the new album GET WELL on the way (release February 26th), 2016 will probably become yet again a very busy year for these road warriors. It’s still unknown if the record of 172 shows (2014) will be broken, but at least you can’t blame the guys for not trying it!

The new album GET WELL starts where the former one ‘Prisoner’ ended. The band stepped further away from the standard 60/70s rock&roll sound and again renewed themselves by – maybe even more than ever before - incorporating Stoner, Punk and now also Progrock influences. Just like their last album, GET WELL is recorded and mixed by Joris Wolff (WITHIN TEMPTATION, DE STAAT etc.) and will be released worldwide on February 26th 2016 by Long Branch Records/SPV and Suburban Records.
