Anaal Nathrakh - Endarkenment

Legendary extreme metallers ANAAL NATHRAKH’s will release a new album, "Endarkenment", their 11th full-length on October 2nd, via Metal Blade Records.

Extremity has been ANAAL NATHRAKH’s stock in trade for more than two decades, and with "Endarkenment", they maintain their legacy of aural devastation. However, for all the furor they stir up, the duo has never been a two-dimensional entity, with a great deal of depth involved in everything that they do, and on many levels, the new record is distinguished from its predecessors. “I think in terms of feel, it’s brighter, more open and direct than maybe we’ve been in the past,” states vocalist Dave Hunt. “Obviously I don’t mean it’s happy-go-lucky sounding or suggestive of a sunny disposition. I mean something more like it burns with light rather than glowers with darkness. It’s coruscating.” The evolution since 2018’s towering "A New Kind Of Horror" has been personal and profound, and is very much in line with that experienced by many of their listeners. “Personally, I feel more cynical, more bitter, with a greater sense that the world is fucked, and is continually re-fucked by people who have no idea what they are doing. Musically, I think we’re more mature – not less frenetic, but better able to channel our energies where they’ll be most effective. That’s an ongoing process, you never finish growing into what you’re doing and being better able to push at the edges of what you can do. But we aren’t interested in evolving what we do, only how we do it. We remain unlike the vast majority of other bands in our sound, and we’re proud of what we do.”

With laying out a plan and then executing it not conducive to the kind of energetic, chaotic vigor Hunt and multi-instrumentalist Mick Kenney look for, the band follows ideas where they are taken by them and work spontaneously. Coining the phrase “riding a dragon” when recording – “making music with a sense that all you can do is hang on” – this very much embodies the tumultuous racket thrown up by "Endarkenment", with its storms of blast beat-driven violence, frenzied riffing and panoramic choruses that suddenly change the direction of tracks. “We only really know what an album is like after we’ve finished it. Doing it any other way just wouldn’t be right for us.” One thing that was very clear to the band was the album’s title and how prescient it is in current times, standing as the opposite of the Enlightenment, a movement that went against superstition and ignorance. Writing in the album’s liner notes, Hunt says: “There has been, and continues to be, increasingly widespread rejection of Enlightenment-style values such as rationalism, skepticism, the rejection of faith in favor of judgments dependent on empirically verifiable phenomena and so on. There are local versions in many places, but in our native UK, this was summed up by politician/sinister gnome Michael Gove’s famous claim that we’ve ‘had enough of experts’. Thus we enter the age of endarkenment.” With this as an overarching theme, Hunt, one of the more intellectual lyricists in contemporary metal, penned the lyrics to the record, exploring a diverse range of subject areas and looking in often uncomfortable directions.

The music was tracked entirely in Kenney’s studio in southern California while the vocals were laid down in an industrial estate in Birmingham, UK, in a unit just down the corridor from where an S&M porn was being filmed. “It occurred to me not long ago that we haven’t recorded together at the same place twice for ten years or more, and I think part of the reason for that is that the place itself doesn’t really affect us. It changes the experience of actually doing it in terms of being there in person, obviously, but it doesn’t really make any difference to the way we work together. Dedicated studios, expensive gear, acoustically isolated live rooms, and so on – they’re all great, I’m sure, but give us a quiet room with a lightbulb, a laptop, and a shitty mic and we’ll still do basically the same thing. The music and the atmosphere and the inspiration are in us, not in places or pieces of equipment.”

Today's tune "Endarkenment" is the title tune from the upcoming album, enjoy!

Behemoth - A Forest

Thursday, time for a cover.

"A Forest" is a song by the English rock band THE CURE. Co-produced by Mike Hedges and the band's Robert Smith, it was released as a single from the band's second album "Seventeen Seconds" on 8 April 1980. It was their debut entry on the UK Singles Chart, reaching number 31. The accompanying music video was first shown on BBC's Top of the Pops program on 24 April 1980.

Recorded and mixed over seven days, along with the rest of the songs from the album, "A Forest" is representative of THE CURE's early-1980s gothic rock phase. The song has featured on the band's setlists for many years. Several versions have appeared on concert albums, and it was remixed and released as a single from Mixed Up in 1990.

Serval cover versions have been made over the years and I notice that the tune has been here before, last time it was with James Leg, read about it here: https://tuneoftheday.blogspot.com/2018/04/james-leg-forest.html. Today's version is a bit harder than his 😁

The Polish extreme metallers BEHEMOTH have made a version, a video for their cover of "A Forest" by THE CURE. The song also features Niklas Kvarforth, singer of Swedish black metal band SHINING. The song is taken off of BEHEMOTH’s new EP also titled “A Forest”. The EP was released May 29 via BEHEMOTH's own label New Aeon Musick. BEHEMOTH released "I Loved You At Your Darkest" in 2018. Check out the video below.

Venom - Countess Bathory

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Countess Bathory" is a tune on the second album "Black Metal" by English heavy metal band VENOM. It was released in November 1982, during the great flourishing of metal music in the UK that was the new wave of British heavy metal, and is considered a major influence on the thrash metal, death metal and black metal scenes that emerged in the 1980s and early 1990s.

The cover art was made by the band's bassist and singer Conrad "Cronos" Lant.

"Countess Bathory" is a tune about "The Countess Erzsébet Báthory".

Elizabeth Bathory is a very suitable subject for a Black Metal song. The American prostitute Aileen Wournos, who was executed in 2002 and made famous in the film Monster, is sometimes referred to erroneously as the first female serial killer. There have of course been female killers throughout history, but the name of the Blood Countess stands out amongst even the most prolific and depraved.

The Countess Erzsébet Báthory to give her her proper name was born in 1560; she was a highly intelligent, educated and literate Hungarian noblewoman who lured dozens of young women to their deaths with promises of well-paid work as maidservants. Her victims were tortured horribly before being murdered, purely for her gratification.

At that time the lives of ordinary people counted for little or nothing, and the authorities turned a blind eye to the murders, but eventually, the King was forced to intervene after a priest raised the issue at the royal court; the official investigation uncovered a house of horrors, and the widowed countess and her conspirators were arrested but she was spared execution to avoid a scandal; instead she was confined to her castle until her death in 1614. One witness at Elizabeth's trial spoke of as many as 650 victims; the most conservative estimate is 36. Unsurprisingly, Elizabeth has become the stuff of legend; one claim, which may or may not have been true, was that she bathed in the blood of virgins because she believed this would keep her eternally young.

The 1971 horror classic Countess Dracula starring Ingrid Pitt is based on Bathory's life; although one reviewer described it as "a fictionalization - and ultimately, a trivialization - of one of history's true friends," the film sacrifices sensationalism to historical accuracy and is rather watchable.

Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed; 7 August 1560 – 21 August 1614) was a Hungarian noblewoman from the noble family of Báthory, who owned land in the Kingdom of Hungary (now Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania).

Báthory has been labeled by Guinness World Records as the most prolific female murderer, though the precise number of her victims is debated. Báthory and four collaborators were accused of torturing and killing hundreds of young women between 1590 and 1610. There is no hard evidence about the whole murder case. The highest number of victims cited during Báthory's trial was 650. However, this number comes from the claim by a servant girl named Susannah that Jakab Szilvássy, Báthory's court official, had seen the figure in one of Báthory's private books. The book was never revealed, and Szilvássy never mentioned it in his testimony. Despite the evidence against Báthory, her family's importance kept her from facing execution. She was imprisoned in December 1610 within the Castle of Csejte, in Upper Hungary (now Slovakia).

The stories of Báthory's sadistic serial murders are verified by the testimony of more than 300 witnesses and survivors as well as physical evidence and the presence of horribly mutilated dead, dying and imprisoned girls found at the time of her arrest. Stories describing Báthory's vampiric tendencies, such as the tale that she bathed in the blood of virgins to retain her youth, were generally recorded years after her death, and are considered unreliable. Her story quickly became part of national folklore, and her infamy persists to this day. She is often compared to Vlad the Impaler of Wallachia (on whom the fictional Count Dracula is partly based); some insist she inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897), though there is no evidence to support this hypothesis. Nicknames and literary epithets attributed to her include The Blood Countess and Countess Dracula
.

Enjoy today's classic, the video is filmed live In London At The Hammersmith Odeon 1985.

Cattle Decapitation - Death Atlas

Monday, a new week and a new year. Let's present 2020's first "Record Of The Week"

Climate issues have been the ultimate topic to speak about during 2019 and that is something the San Diego extreme metal band CATTLE DECAPITATION has really caught on with their eighth studio album "Death Atlas". They have never shied away from confronting the awfulness wrought upon the natural world by the human race, and "Death Atlas" is their bleakest offering to date. The cover art says it all: a stooped, skeletal Grim Reaper carrying the burnt-out husk of our planet on his back. The magnificent album artwork is done by Wes Benscoter.

The album's theme is humanity’s destruction of a dying world and it's the next step in the band's development where the extreme overlord's brutality spreads its wings and crosses the boundaries of many exhilarating genres and gives us the group’s most varied record by far.

"Death Atlas" delivers an unforgettable and really enjoyable hour full of technical virtuosity and aggression of today's careless and nonchalant people in our world. Musically is an extremely well-crafted beast with a distinct balance of hyper adrenaline rush and half paced, chunky melodic parts. Big riffs that will drop your chin, cut off from Josh Elmore and the newcomer Belisario Dimuzio, tight, creative and totally inhuman drummings by Dave McGraw, steady and well-picked bass lines by Olivier Pinard and the amazing vocals that only Travis Ryan masters. Lyrically is a lot of grief, anger, hate, passion and big emotions around humanity’s destruction. "Death Atlas" contains 14 tunes, broken up by several interludes like the intro "Anthropogenic: End Transmission". The first real tune "The Geocide" is a cruel piece that will shake off all the bad things that you have collected over the years as a human being. The blazing tremolo-picked riffs along with the killer blast-beats and the signature vocal with the clear message will make you follow the order to be a better human. Furious blasting in a thunderstorm tempo lays the path for "Be Still Our Bleeding Hearts", vocal changes along with amazing riffing that will satisfie you as a listener. "Vulturous" and "Finish Them" are two straightforward tunes with crunchy and stompy riffing. Lovely doom riffs along with the nasty goblin snarl in the beauty "Time’s Cruel Curtain", to the blackened "Bring Back The Plague" and "Absolute Destitute". The riff raffing tunes like "Finish Them" and "One Day Closer To The End Of The World" are both well done and enjoyable tunes to play on a high volume. The album closes up with the title tune "Death Atlas", over nine minutes of tempo changes between the high furious speed with a tremendous screech and middle rolling with a goblin snarl, a middle part with emotional atmosphere and sensible clear vocals until it fades out in the space.

I wonder if this could be Gretas favorite band 2019? This was one of the best albums in this genre during 2019, an excellent crafted extreme metal record. It will be very interesting how it will stand during the time. If you don't own this album, make sure to get it.

Sum: It's really time to do something about our planet.

Today's tune is the title track from "Death Atlas", enjoy!

Bathory - One Rode To Asa Bay

Sunday, time for a classic!

"One Rode to Asa Bay" is a song by BATHORY about the Christianization of Scandinavia and appears on the 1990 album Hammerheart.

BATHORY were an extreme metal group formed in Vällingby, Sweden, in 1983 named after Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Báthory. The band's frontman and main songwriter was Quorthon (Tomas Forsberg). Considered to be one of the most influential acts in heavy metal, BATHORYs first four albums are considered to be "the blueprint for Scandinavian black metal". The band departed from this style on their fifth album, "Hammerheart" (1990), which is often cited as the first Viking metal album. BATHORY continued in the Viking metal style throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, although the band experimented with thrash metal on the albums "Requiem" (1994) and "Octagon" (1995). BATHORY ended when Quorthon died from heart failure in 2004.

Quorthon dedicated the song to C. Dean Andersson, who had earlier sent some of his books to Quorthon. The village's name in the song, Asa Bay, comes from pseudonym Asa Drake which Andersson used in some of his books.

The music video was filmed in a suburb of Stockholm to complement the story idea of the song. The video contains scenes of the band performing and a back story of settlers bringing a new religion to the land. BATHORY guitarist and vocalist, Quorthon, paid $5,000 to film the music video. Quorthon explained, "I have never seen it and I didn't get to see any of the 60 hours of film we had worked on for several weeks." He elaborated, "the guy who was responsible for the whole filming just went on holiday once the last shot was made and he was unheard from and impossible to reach." After several months later "he eventually did send us something", but it was 18 minutes of the 60 hours that were filmed. Meanwhile, it was assumed "the rest of the material is probably erased" and the final product was to remain the edited video that did not represent Quorthon's song idea. Ultimately, it became the first and last video BATHORY would make. Even so, the video received play of MTV's Headbangers Ball, which got Quorthon interviewed on MTV and introduced the band to American audiences. The video had only been available as a bootleg until 2006, when Black Mark Records released a tribute to Quorthon which contains a DVD with Quorthon footage and the video itself.

Cover versions of the song have been recorded by OPERA IX and MYSTIC CIRCLE.

Enjoy today's tune "One Rode To Asa Bay", the tune is taken from their fifth album, "Hammerheart" (1990)

Gaahls WYRD - From The Spear

Norwegian extreme metal formation GAAHLS WYRD, fronted by renowned vocalist Gaahl (GORGOROTH, WARDRUNA), will release its debut album, "GastiR - Ghosts Invited", on May 31 via Season Of Mist. The album was recorded last year at Solslottet Studios in Norway with Iver Sandøy (ENSLAVED). The word "Gastir" means visitor. The record is shaping up to be a decidedly not-so-black metal affair, though the singles thus far have proven Gaahl is far more talented than relying on his reputation and excellent musicianship.

Gaahl is known as one of Norway's most-talked-about and respected extreme metal musicians. His work with TRELLDOM, GORGOROTH, WARDRUNA and GOD SEED has been widely regarded as some of the best the black metal scene has had to offer.

GAAHLS WYRD conists of:
Vocals - Gaahl (Kristian Espedal) (GORGOROTH, WARDRUNA, GOD SEED),
Guitar - Lust Kilman (Ole Walaunet) (THE BATALLION, GOD SEED, GRIMFIST),
Bass - Eld (Frode Kilvik) (KRAKOW, AETERNUS) and on
Drums - Spektre (Kevin Kvåle) (HORIZON ABLAZE).

GAAHLS WYRD have just finish of the European tour with TRIBULATION, UADA and IDLE HANDS.

Today's tune "From The Spear" is taken from the upcoming album "Gastir – Ghosts Invited" will be released may 31st through Seasons of Mist.

Rotting Christ - The Heretics

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The Greeks extreme metal legends ROTTING CHRIST have been around since 1987. A band that I haven followed awhile, really liked the last release "Rituals". It's been over a decade since the band shifted their focus away from raw and bestial sounds to a more spirituality folkish melodic death metal with big anthems.

Their 13th effort "The Heretics" is natural successor to 2016’s "Rituals". Once again a good album, it's not as direct and cleaver as "Rituals" was, but good enough to take a place as the "Record Of The Week".

"The Heretics" is a grandiose 10 tunes album or 12 if you get the Deluxe version (the review is based on the 10 tune album). The album have big atmosphere with nifty arrangements and bombastic crescendos, follows the same path they’ve carved on the last album, almost get the feeling that these tunes was written at the same time but didn't fit on the "Rituals" template and got put to the side and ended up on "The Heretics" instead, gets a little double-edged. Anyway, there are some decent tunes here. Like the powerful opening tune "In The Name Of God", big guitar and graceful choirs, follows up by beautiful melody in "Vetry Zlye (ВЕТРЫ ЗЛЫЕ)", big riffs and female chants. Massive sound with long and drawling riffs in the sorrowful "Heaven & Hell & Fire" and gets maxed with powerful chugga chugga riffs in the half paced "Hallowed Be Thy Name". The hypnotic "Dies Irae" or the folkish sound, addressed with spoken words in "I Believe (ΠΙΣΤΕΥΩ)". "Fire God And Fear" is a heavy and speedy piece with a great solo. The album closes up with beautiful melodic solos in "The Raven", a great album ending with a poetry by Edgar Allan Poe. "The Heretics" continuing battle with the church and summon up Satanic sermon and gives us a pretty decent release. The artwork made by Maximos Manolis and the album mixing by Jens Bogren.

Sum: A decent follow up!

Today's tune "The Raven", taken from "The Heretics", enjoy!

Celtic Frost - Tristesses De La Lune

Ce soir la Lune rêve avec plus de paresse
Ainsi qu'une beauté sur de nombreux coussins
Qui d'une main discrète et légère caresse
Avant de s'endormir le contour de ses seins
Sur le dos satine, des molles avalanches

That's part of the lyrics of the poem of the Sunday classic.

"Into the Pandemonium" is the third studio album by Swiss extreme metal band CELTIC FROST, released in 1987. The album is more varied than CELTIC FROSTs past LPs, with unlikely covers (Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio"), emotionally charged love songs, the album's recurring industrial-influenced rhythmic songs of demons and destruction, traditional FROST-styled songs about dreams and fear, and a dark, classical piece with female vocals.

Some of the lyrics are silently borrowed from other sources. For example, significant portions of Inner Sanctum are directly quoted from Emily Brontë poems, while the lyrics to "Tristesses de la lune" are borrowed from the poem of the same name in Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal. The lyrics to "Sorrows of the Moon" are an English translation of the same.

The cover image is a detail from the right (Hell) panel of The Garden of Earthly Delights, a triptych painted in 1504 by Hieronymus Bosch, now part of the permanent collection at the Prado in Madrid.

Enjoy today's classic "Tristesses De La Lune", that is a classical composition sung in French by a female vocalist, who I don't know, couldn't find anything about it, does anyone know, please tell me.

Behemoth - I Loved You At Your Darkest

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"I Loved You At Your Darkest" (ILYAYD for short) is the 11th full-length release for the Polish blackened death metal band BEHEMOTH. The album was released on October 5, 2018.

BEHEMOTH is a band that always been about breaking boundaries, taboos, leaving its comfort zone and thinking out of the box! Something that I value high as listner to their musical creations. After the masterpiece of "The Satanist" the previous album, they are back with another powerful, dark and full of mind-blowing sounds that will surely run more than one time on your record player, mine has even if I am a bit late with this review. ILYAYD is an album with no fillers, extremely good quality straight true the album. BEHEMOTH shows that they still are one of the top bands in their genre.

Nergal's vocals are horrified and excellent, guitar playing is melodic and evil. Inferno's drumming is like a furious machine. The hellish bass licks by "Orion" and the haunted and icy riffing by "Seth" makes this a very good band.

ILYAYD opens up with the "Not to forgive" from the children’s choir in the intro "Solve" until the "Wolves Ov Siberia" shows it blackened backbone self. "God = Dog" features classic black metal with heavy riffing and a insane video. The melodic blackened piece "If Crucifixion Was Not Enough" is a real beauty to the lovley and vicious power ballad "Bartzabel" or the catchy choruses and riffs in the hypnotic hymn to the anti-god "Havohej Pantocrator", in "Angelvs XIII" and "Sabbath Mater" we get some powerful BEHEMOTH pieces, blasting, screaming, hateful and some melodic guitar riffing to the tear the heads off tune "Ecclesia Diabolica Catholica", overload and blastbeat-heavy tunes like "Rom 5:8" and the album closer "Coagvia". It doesn't get more blasphemous than this!

Sum: ILYAYD is another strong addition to BEHEMOTHs remarkable musical catalog.

Today's tune "Bartzabel", taken from ILYAYD, enjoy!

Meshuggah - Demiurge

Another band at Swedish Rock Festival is the Swedish experimental extreme metallers MESHUGGAH. A band that I will for sure see if time let me.

A cool video for "Demiurge" was released ages ago, taken from the great "Koloss" album.

The video was shoot combining extreme camera angles with adrenaline-inducing performance footage from the band's sold-out show at Terminal 5 in New York City this past May, "Demiurge" was filmed and directed by Anthony Dubois. The song comes off MESHUGGAH's latest album, "Koloss", which has sold more than 41,000 copies in the United States since its March release.

Tomas Haake stated, "As always, we try to take our music in a slightly different direction with each album and with Koloss, we feel that we really nailed what we were going for. Organic brutality, viscera and groove all crammed into a 54-minute metalicious treat, best avoided by the faint of heart!!"

Batushka - Yekteníya IV

Yesterday did the Polish extreme orthodox rockers BATUSHKA visit Sweden and Stockholm for a show at Nalen. A band that I became familiar with at the beginning of last year when I ran into their debut album. Read the review here! I was there with to friends and hade a pretty good evening.

The Pilgrimage tour is a pretty fun spectacle, much like you think you can expect from these guys. Imagine GHOST, though much darker, you're right close. Here you will get a Priest (BATUSHKA), who lights the candles, wiggles with his incense censer, holy water brush, the icon of "Litourgaya". An orthodox choir behind masks gives the show a great spirit and mystics, the sound was pretty good, the instruments were clear, and crisp in the position I was standing at, the light is the only thing I could whine over, simply too overworked to keep the mystery up, so most of the show became flat and boring in all flashes.

The setlist was simple, tune 1 to 8.

BATUSHKA is pronounced "Batjushka", the band's Cyrillic name Батюшка means "father" and is used to address an Eastern Orthodox priest. Despite their themes and imagery, they are not a Christian band.

Today's tune "Yekteníya IV: Milost" is taken from "Litourgaya"

Batushka - Litourgiya

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record of the Week".

Yes, I'm still stuck in the extreme, I guess that I have to blame Chief Rebel for that. Since the annual Hard Rock evening the harder tones have been played a lot and it seams that I can't stop,  I also started to go true the records that have been stuck to the side for the genre that was overwhelming me before Christmas. Something that I'm pretty happy for after all, as there was many records that was really good, here is one that really blew me away.

BATUSHKA is a Polish band whose members have not been disclosed, well they are doing the GHOST thingie, but they are reputed to be from well-known bands, rumours whispering that MGLA is behind this, if so well done guys as this is a great release.

BATUSHKA is pronounced "Batjushka", the band's Cyrillic name Батюшка means "father" and is used to address an Eastern Orthodox priest. Despite their themes and imagery, they are not a Christian band.

"Litourgiya" is masterfully crafted piece of art, it's clouded with a dark atmosphere surrounded with Orthodox imagery and liturgical chant in a marvellous blend of Black Metal and Doom Metal. The riffs are heavy, distorted and very down tuned along with tight bass and blistering drumming. From start to finish it has a deep feeling evil amends and old history, almost that you can feel the incense when you close your eyes and listening through your high-end headphones.

The production is really good, it's raw and constant, perfectly for this record. was the influence of Rotting Christ

Summery: It's a must have album, if you can obtain a copy go on and grab it.

Today's tune "Yektenia I" is taken from "Litourgaya"

Rotting Christ - For A Voice Like Thunder

Today it's time to present category two:
(Damn, this is good. (Something you previously have rejected)
from the annual hard rock evening.

This category was actually a really good one and was pretty easy for me to come up with. Easy as not so long ago I had to listen to "Rituals" with ROTTING CHRIST, a band that in my world was pretty mediocre, boring or something that I never bothered to listen or even give it a chance, but with "Rituals" my opinion change, it's a awesome album.

Other tunes that was played during this category was.

JUDAS PRIEST - Cathedral Spires
PARADISE LOST - One Second
DEATH - Scavenger of Human Sorrow
IN FLAMES - Through My Eyes
KHEMMIS - Hunted
MÖTLEY CRUE - Kickstart My Heart
CROWBAR - Walk With Knowledge Wisely

(Missing songs from two participants).

Today's tune "For A Voice Like Thunder" feat Nick Holmes (PARADISE LOST) with the Greek ROTTING CHRIST from the latest and twelfth full-length album "Rituals", released on February 12th, 2016, enjoy!.

Meshuggah - Clockworks

The Violent Sleep of Reason is the eighth studio album by the Swedish extreme metal band MESHUGGAH, formed 1987 in Umeå. MESHUGGAHs line-up consists of founding members vocalist Jens Kidman and lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal, drummer Tomas Haake, who joined in 1990, rhythm guitarist Mårten Hagström, who joined in 1992 and bassist Dick Lövgren since 2004.

The album's title was loosely inspired by The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, an etching by Spanish painter Francisco Goya. The album's title and lyrical themes are a commentary on terrorism, extremist views on ideals, religious dogma, and the violent implications of "being asleep, so to speak, or not reacting to what's going on in the proper way". Concerning the album artwork, Tomas Haake stated:

"It was a hard one in the sense that you don't immediately have a visual to the title The Violent Sleep of Reason – how do you portray that?

"So when discussing this with Keerych Luminokaya, who also did the artwork for our 25th anniversary box set along with the artwork for Koloss, we just let him loose on that idea and how to portray that.

"What you're seeing on the artwork is basically a human being that's been in stasis for a long time. The vines were the original idea – they're growing into him. But it's a body that's been asleep for so long that it's been taken over by something else."

In an attempt to depart from the production on previous albums like Koloss and obZen, this album was recorded live. According to Haake, this allowed the band to capture their sound more "honestly" and to capture the "rawness" of albums from the '80s and early '90s that "inspired us when were growing up." Haake elaborated:

"If you put it all together using computers then you often have to fix problems after the fact. I've gone back to records where I've not known every drum part. And once you do that you can start with drums and then just add layers of guitars and then bass and it all sounds perfect.

"ObZen and Koloss are great albums but, to me, they are a little too perfect. It didn't really capture what we sounded like honestly. "But where we recorded live you get to hear the push and pull, one person might be a little ahead and the other might be a little behind. If you kill that, you can kill the energy."

Today's tune "Clockworks" is a single taken from the latest album "The Violent Sleep of Reason", released on 7 October 2016 on Nuclear Blast. Official music video (produced by Julius Horsthuis).

The Resistance - For The Venom

Tougher. Harder. Stronger. Following the release of the EP "Torture Tactics" in early 2015 the Swedish death metal band THE RESISTANCE returns with their long awaited new album.

“Coup De Grace” reconnects with the one and only, original extreme hard-core and slams it straight down your throat and into the present age. The ferocious and relentless pureness makes it a masterpiece, as the overwhelming aggression encloses and doesn't let you go.

THE RESISTANCEs greatly line-up is as powerful as their music: The five Swedish musicians are already heroes in Scandinavian extreme metal.

Joining singer Marco Aro (also in THE HAUNTED) in THE RESISTANCE's current lineup are IN FLAMES founding member Jesper Strömblad on guitar, Daniel Antonsson (SOILWORK, DARK TRANQUILLITY) on guitar, Chris Barkensjö (KAAMOS, GRAVE) on drums, and the band's latest addition, Rob Hakemo (M.A.N.) on bass.

Today's tune "For The Venom" is taken from “Coup De Grace”, enjoy!
