Ulver - Solitude

Today's cover of the tune "Solitude" is made by the Norweigan musical group ULVER. Since their first, folklore-influenced black metal release entitled "Bergtatt -- Et eeventyr i 5 capitler" (1994), ULVERs musical style has been fluid and increasingly eclectic, blending genres such as rock, electronica, symphonic and chamber traditions, noise and experimental music into their oeuvre, but with a heavy reliance on electronic recording techniques.

"Solitude" is taken from the seventh dark and tragic studio album "Shadows Of The Sun" that was released in October 2007 via Jester Records and The End Records. "Solitude" is a BLACK SABBATH cover; the original version appears on their 1971 album "Master of Reality".

"Master of Reality" is the third studio album by English rock band BLACK SABBATH, released on 21 July 1971. It is widely regarded as the foundation of doom metal, stoner rock, and sludge metal. It was certified double platinum after having sold over 2 million copies. "Master of Reality" was BLACK SABBATHs first and only top 10 album in the US until "13", forty-two years later.

The tune "Solitude" from the album "Master of Reality" featuring a delay effect, it was added to Ozzy Osbourne’s vocals on this song to provide the effect of a second vocal track. This song features the multi-instrumentalist talents of Sabbath guitarist Tommy Iommi (who also plays flute & piano on the recording). This song is about being depressed after breaking up with somebody.

Tony Iommi comments that this "might be the first love song we ever recorded." Having been inspired by his very brief gig with JETHRO TULL.

Enjoy today's tune.

Les Discrets - Virée Nocturne

Let's continue in the same steps as the "Record Of The Week", LES DISCRETS is a French shoegaze/post-rock project created and led by Fursy Teyssier as a "platform gathering music and art". Teyssier was the sole member of the band until 2009. Since then they have released two albums, in 2010 and 2012, respectively and the third is in the pipeline.

Fursy Teyssier's art is amazing, he have created album covers for ALCEST, MORBID ANGEL, EMPYRIUM, AGALLOCH, THE OATH, WOODS OF YPRES among others, check it out here!

The 4-track EP "Virée Nocturne" heralds LES DISCRETS third album "Prédateurs" (due out in early 2017). Four years after the last studio effort, "Ariettes Oubliées", Fursy Teyssier departs from his blend of atmospheric metal and post rock, influenced by such artists as AGALLOCH, ANATHEMA or early ULVER and returns with a reinvention of LES DISCRETS. Drawing inspiration from acts like PORTISHEAD, MASSIVE ATTACK, LANA DEL REY, PINK FLOYD or BLONDE REDHEAD, he keeps his musical core with a calmer version of LES DISCRETS, maintaining the inherent the melancholy and melodics.

"Virée Nocturne" is not only a new start in terms of music, but also on the visual level. For the first time, Teyssier collaborates with another graphic designer on the visual appearance of a LES DISCRETS release. The British artist Chris Friel combines painting with photography in a unique way, a huge inspiration for Teyssier and even the guideline for the music.

Besides the title track that will also be featured on "Prédateurs", the EP features the exclusive song "Capricorni. Virginis. Corvi", a demo version of another new song ("Le Reproche") and a remix of "Virée Noturne" by progressive hip hop artist Dälek.

Available editions:

- 12' vinyl EP (black) incl. printed inner sleeve (400 copies)
- 12" vinyl EP (clear) incl. printed inner sleeve (90 copies and exclusively available at Prophecy Fest 2016)
- CD Digipak

Today's tune is the title track of the latest EP "Virée Nocturne", 2016

Paradise Lost - Beneath Broken Earth

Now returning with opus number fourteen “The Plague Within”, PARADISE LOST are once again refining the chemical equation to their sonic alchemy with the kind of creative invincibility few can deliver, this can clearly be heard on the first single and video "Beneath Broken Earth".  Really looking forward to spin “The Plague Within” on the turntable soon, with the first taste it sounds really good (:, the album is produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano (GHOST BC, ULVER, CATHEDRAL) and visually rounded-off by art courtesy of Zbigniew M. Bielak (WATAIN; BEHEMOTH).

PARADISE LOST are a gothic metal band that formed in 1988 in Halifax, England and are considered by some to be one of the pioneers of the gothic metal genre. PARADISE LOST has proven to be an influential band, with Jonas Renkse of KATATONIA saying that his band started off "as PARADISE LOST fanboys".

Their line-up has remained stable for such a long-standing heavy metal band, consisting of singer Nick Holmes, guitarists Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy, and bassist Steve Edmondson. Holmes and Mackintosh are the principal composers, with almost all of the band's songs credited to them. During the years, the band has only changed drummers.

Speaking to Rock Sins, Nick Holmes stated that the new album would have elements of all previous Paradise Lost material including a return to the death/doom of their early output, stating that "there’s some songs that could’ve been written in 1989, a couple of really old school doom/death songs which are gonna surprise a couple of people when they hear it".

The Artwork is done by the Polish illustrator Zbigniew M. Bielak

Born in 1980 in Cracow, Zbigniew M. Bielak is a Polish artist and architect, best known in the musical realm for his record cover illustrations, which among others include meticulously handcrafted artworks of WATAIN, GHOST, VADER or ABSU albums.

Paralelly to that his artistic output is mostly focused on encyclopaedic, archaeologic and architectural illustration, and has crossed multiple mediums within art including drawing, oil and acrylic painting or serigraphy, with the pursuit of historical coherence and attention to detail being clearly focal points of his varied stylistic leanings.

Todays tune "Beneath Broken Earth" is the first taste of the upcoming album "The Plague Within"

Winterfylleth - A Thousand Winters

There has been much British music here the last few days, melodic and hard indeed, why not continue in the same footsteps, so today we serve you guys with some passionate, anthemic black metal inspired by the history, heritage and landscapes of England.

Winterfylleth is an English black-metal band, formed in 2007 in Manchester. With the intention of honouring England’s proud ancestral heritage and rich national culture, Winterfylleth (comprised of members culled from the UK’s most devastating doom contingent Atavist) set a solidified mission statement to bring awareness to England’s historical stories, folklore, landscapes and ancestral past through their folk-influenced vitriolic black metal.

Coining the term English Heritage Black Metal (EHBM), Winterfylleth (which translates into Winter Full Moon from the Olde English language) represents the first full moon in October as well as the Anglo-Saxon festival of the arrival of winter.

By combining vicious yet moody folk inspired black metal that harkens back to the early days of Enslaved and old-school Ulver, Winterfylleth also conjure feelings and moods that reflect with the likes of acts such as Drudkh, Hate Forest, and Forefather, while at the same time, forging new ground to lead a recent movement in UK black metal.

Lyrically, the band delve into tales of England’s archaic history, re-counting major events, battles, and even draw inspiration from certain sites and scenery that grace the countryside of England and have played an integral part in England’s history.

Winterfylleth have also been hand picked by Primordial to appear at their own personal festival in Dublin Ireland early in February 2013 entitled Redemption Festival. In March 2013, Winterfylleth will be appearing at Hammerfest 5 in the UK.

Winterfylleth are:
Chris Naughton (guitar/vocals), Simon Lucas (drums/backing vocals), Nick Wallwork (bass/backing vocals) & Mark Wood (guitar/backing vocals)

Todays tune "A Thousand Winters" is taken from the 3rd full-length album "The Threnody of Triumph"
