Landing - Wait Or Hide

Connecticut group LANDING celebrates their 20th anniversary this year, but is showing no signs of losing creative momentum. On the contrary, "Bells In New Towns", their second album for El Paraiso Records, is arguably their finest, most cohesive effort to date.

LANDINGs sound has always been multi-textured, alluding to many different genres at once. There's the heavy oscillating drones and the fuzzy, motoric psychedelia, the lush ambient soundscapes and shimmering, dreamy vibes - all tied together by that characteristic sense of fluid progression.

"Bells In New Towns" could be described as their most grounded, earthy sounding release so far. On this record the ethereal components of their sound are firmly anchored by a tight, steady low-end – certainly due to the fact that the album was partly recorded by seasoned New England rock producer Justin Pizzoferrato (DINOSAUR JR., ELDER, PIXIES, SONIC YOUTH). Much like their spiritual kins in YO LA TENGO and BARDO POND, LANDING have eclectically picked their influences from a wide range of musical eras and cultures. The result is an electric music that speaks to the mind as well as the senses.

Black Mountain - Junior's Eyes

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Junior's Eyes" is a tune made by the English rock band BLACK SABBBTH, taken from the eighth studio album "Never Say Die!", released in September 1978. It was the last studio album with the band's original lineup and the last studio album to feature original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne until the 2013 album "13". It was certified Gold in the U.S on 7 November 1997 and as of November 2011 has sold 133,000 copies in the United States since the SoundScan era. The album received mixed reviews, with critics calling it "unbalanced" and insisting its energy was scattered in too many directions.

"Junior's Eyes" was dedicated to Ozzy Osbourne's father, who died in 1977 while they were making "Never Say Die!" Ozzy was booted from the band the following year and launched a successful solo career. He returned to the band from time to time, including for Live Aid in 1985.

"Junior's Eyes" was covred by the Canadian psychedelic rock band BLACK MOUNTAIN and the band have blessed the world with two unreleased songs, “Junior’s Eyes” and “Future Shade (Demo)” on thier latest single release on March 10th on Jagjaguwar.

Stephen McBean says of the cover of "Junior’s Eyes": “Deep end period Ozzy slow burn. Some Butler / Ward funk, Iommi wah flutters and floating synths … randomly rediscovered on a cruise through some red sand tropics. Nearly ten years on and still pulling riffs from the sky…. never say die! You’re never too old to switch on and upwards!”

The rock canon has many anti-heroes, BLACK MOUNTAIN being the latest. In the past, Can’s 'Tago Mago' established that the only rule in rock and roll is that there are no rules. Delinquent proto-metallers Black Sabbath demonstrated that you can make a lot from not that much. Now BLACK MOUNTAIN teach us that you don’t have to be afraid of the past to move bravely into the future.

Enjoy today's tune!

Church of the Cosmic Skull - Black Slug

CHURCH OF THE COSMIC SKULL is a twofold entity: a new religious movement who seek to free mankind from their material possessions and unify all living beings into a singular cosmic whole; and a 7-piece supergroup based in Nottingham UK playing Prog/Psych/'70s Rock/Pop. For fans of BLACK MOUNTAIN, GHOST, KING GIZZARD, UNCLE ACID. The combination of guitar, hammond organ, electric cello, bass and drums is a tip of the hat to the MAHAVISHUU ORCHESTRA sound, but with six-part QUEEN-esque vocal harmonies and THIN LIZZY pop-rock structures.

Brought together by songwriter Bill Fisher, the group features some of the best musicians in the universe:

Michael Wetherburn - Hammond Organ & BV (HELLSET ORCHESTRA, ULYSSES STROM)
Loz Stone - Drums (IRON SWAN, RESCUED BY WOLVES)
Sam Lloyd - Bass & BV (YOU SLUT!, PILGRIM FATHERS)
Jo Joyce - Backing Vocals (Solo Artist)
Amy Nicholson - Electric Cello & BV (HELLSET ORCHESTRA, POLYMATH)
Caroline Cawley - Backing Vocals (DYSTOPIAN FUTURE MOVIES, CLUB AC30)
Bill Fisher - Guitar & LV (MAMMOTHWING, DISTILLERY BLUES BAND)

Ironbird - Hard Times Light Shines

Monday, New week and it's time to introduce this week's "Record Of The Week"

Record Of The Week is "Black Mountain", the latest release on "Transubstans Records" from the Swedish band IRONBIRD.

IRONBIRD was formed by Magnus Jernström (MANGROVE). With a perfect blending of skilled musicians and visions, IRONBIRD manages to create a unique mix of the 70's best era along with the heavy days of the 90's.

"Black Mountain" is classic hard rock album with it´s roots in the seventies retro genre, the record is crammed with heavy boiling riffs, doomish sound and pounding rhythms. The vocals are slightly like Ozzy Osbourne. While their influences are a familiar mix of BLACK SABBATH hard rock and 90’s stoner rock. It's energetic and full of spirits, also a handful of psychedelia. The songs have a great substance and are backed up with skilled musicians.

I highly recommend the astonishing début "Black Mountian" with IRONBIRD, perfect for fans of classic Hard Rock.

My copy of Black Mountain.

IRONBIRD consists of:

Magnus Jernström - Guitar
Rasmus Jansson - Vocals
Fredrik Schönbeck - Bass
Magnus Arndtzén - Drums
Jonas Edler - Spirit, Percussion

Todays tune is the smoker "Hard Times Light Shines", enjoy it!
