Rhiannon Giddens - Wayfaring Stranger

Thursday, time for a cover.

"The Wayfaring Stranger" (also known as "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" or "I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger"), Roud 3339, is a well-known American folk and gospel song likely originating in the early 19th century about a plaintive soul on the journey through life. As with most folk songs, many variations of the lyrics exist and many versions of this song have been published over time by popular singers, often being linked to times of hardship and notable experiences in the singers' lives, such as the case with Burl Ives' autobiography.

Today's version is made by the American singer songwriter and fiddle player, and banjo player Rhiannon Giddens, she has released a beautiful hauntingly poignant rendition of "Wayfaring Stranger", see it below. And in gospel’s vast repertoire, there is no other song like "Wayfaring Stranger". The feel of the song accurately portrays the trials of which we undergo before we go to our eternal resting place.

Rhiannon Giddens is a founding member of the country, blues and old-time music band CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS, where she is the lead singer, fiddle player, and banjo player.

Today's tune "Wayfaring Stranger", where she performs on the BBC Northern Ireland programme also called conveniently called Wayfaring Stranger.
