Nite - Darkness Silence Mirror Flame

Monday, a new week and it's time to present "Record Of The Week".

"Darkness Silence Mirror Flame" is the debut album by dirty blackened heavy metal band NITE.

The San Francisco based rockers NITE was founded in 2018 by the guitar and vocalist Van Labrakis (SATAN’s WRATH, MENCEA), guitarist Scott Hoffman (DAWNBRINGER, HIGH SPIRITS), bassist Bryan Coons (OLDER SUN, MOTORHOME), and the drummer Pat Crawford (SERPENTS OF DAWN, OLDER SUN).

"Darkness Silence Mirror Flame" was recorded by NITE’s Van Labrakis at The Hoagie Container and 210 Studios San Francisco, mixed and mastered by Van Labrakis at 210 Studios, produced by Van Labrakis and NITE, and completed with cover artwork by Misanthropic Arts. The album was released by Creator-Destructor Records on Aug 21, 2020.

"Darkness Silence Mirror Flame" contains eight searing songs that clocks in at full three-quarters where the band unfold stories of horror, darkness, and despair. Delivering traditional heavy metal with blackened vocals, heavily influenced by the NWOBHM and the heavy metal titans of the 1980s, NITE brings us back to the golden age of heavy metal. The album is full of razor-sharp guitars, blazing leads, earth-shattering bass, and punishing drums set the stage for the filthy and harsh vocals. Its classic heavy metal that is newly renovated and painted black. The sound is awesome and the harsh vocal marries well with the music and I do love what I hear. From the opening tune, "Genesis" with its dual guitars, double drum beats in a classic sound makes me almost pee in my pants. The tune is catchy and very melodic, almost like HIGH SPIRITS, but with blackened harsh vocals and more darkened lyrics. The opening recipe is the ground for what's to come. Thrashy and guitar-heavy "The Way" continues on the same path where we in the tune "Lucifer" slows down a bit, put on the evil goth hat. "Ezelia" have some doomish over it, heavy in a melodic way, and spices it up with great solos here and there. The catchy rockers "Night Terrors" and "Chains" are two great tunes in the classic heavy metal way, great riffing, and very catchy, especially the latter one. "Bright" is a classic metal ballad with blackened vocals and in the end, it's almost like Joe Satriani jams with SURVIVOR :) The album closes with the super-catchy "Acolytes", epic and bouncy where it's hard to sit still. The album is musically just great, well created with some really cool riffing, great drumming and well played bass lines. The album is almost perfect, a bit too monotonous singing, would have liked a little more variety then this would have been magical.

Sum: A great blackened heavy metal from current and past members of SATAN’s WRATH, DAWNBRINGER, and HIGH SPIRITS.

Van Labrakis - Guitar / Vocals
Scott Hoffman - Guitar
Bryan Coons - Bass
Pat Crawford - Drums

The Yardbirds - Over Under Sideways Down

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Over Under Sideways Down" is a 1966 song by English rock group THE YARDBIRDS. Inspired by Bill Haley and His Comets' "Rock Around the Clock", Jeff Beck plays both the lead guitar and bass guitar. The song was released as a single in May 1966, two months before the group's self-titled UK album (commonly known as "Roger The Engineer" and "Over Under Sideways Down" in the US and elsewhere).

The single performed well on the record charts and was ranked number 23 in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.

An instrumental titled "Jeff's Boogie" was used for the B-side. Although credited to Beck, it is based on Chuck Berry's "Guitar Boogie" (not the 1940s "Guitar Boogie" by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith).

Roger The Engineer is the 1966 studio album by THE YARDBIRDS, featured in both Rolling Stone’s list of the ‘500 Greatest Albums Of All Time’ and Robert Dimery’s book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Recorded by the classic era line-up of Jeff Beck, Keith Relf, Jim McCarty, Chris Dreja and Paul Samwell-Smith, it finds the band exploring new sonic territories, pushing their blues-rock sound into the realms of the avant-garde, psychedelia and Indian music. This newly expanded edition includes the classic studio album on LP1 and a collection of 1966 studio recordings on LP2, housed together in an alternate sleeve inspired by an ultra-rare 1966 EP cover. Pressed on 180g heavyweight white vinyl, exclusively for Record Store Day 2020.

That was one of the records I bought under the first  Record Store Day, Drop 1. The rest are in the picture below. Hopefully, It won't be as many under Drop 2 & 3. As the main releases are usually repressing of records that you already own, at least it's a great opportunity if you are a new vinyl collector.

THE YARDBIRDS was formed in London in 1963. The band's core lineup featured vocalist and harmonica player Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty, rhythm guitarist/bassist Chris Dreja, and bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith. The band is known for starting the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck, all of whom ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 greatest guitarists. The band had a string of hits throughout the mid-1960s, including "For Your Love", "Heart Full of Soul", "Shapes of Things" and "Over Under Sideways Down".

Today's tune "Over Under Sideways Down" was about the situation of having a good time - a bit of decadence, really - in the '60s. Cars and girls are easy to come by in this day and age, and laughing, drinking, smoking, whatever, till I've spent my wages, having fun, explains THE YARDBIRDS drummer Jim McCarty.
Enjoy today's classic.

Black Pistol Fire - Hope In Hell

The garage rock duo BLACK PISTOL FIRE is working and the sixth album is on the way.

A single "Hope In Hell" has been released in July, a tune that was written and recorded almost 2 years ago, this song resonates with BLACK PISTOL FIRE as a band in a much deeper way today. The band was wrestling with many internal struggles during the writing process, the words feel even more relevant during these strange times.

It’s been a year since we last heard from Kevin McKeown and Eric Owen, the guitarist and drummer behind BLACK PISTOL FIRE, and three years since they dropped their excellent full-length "Deadbeat Graffiti" in 2017.

The Austin-based group has finished their sixth studio album will be released next winter on Black Hill Records, the album which was co-produced by Jacob Sciba (Gary Clark Jr, GOV’T MULE, Warren Haynes) and mixed by Vance Powell (THE WHITE STRIPES, RACONTEURS, Chris Stapleton).

Today's tune "Hope In Hell" is a bluesy, slow-burning southern rock piece, check it up and enjoy!

Bombs Of Hades - Phantom Bell

Since 2008, Record Store Day has grown into the world’s largest single-day music event, shining a light on the culture of the indie record store across the globe. In 2020, that world is different, so Record Store Day will be too. RSD is now scheduled to be celebrated with special, properly distanced release dates on Saturdays in August, September, and October.

Record Store Day will look very different this year, but supporting indie record stores may be more important than ever. We don't know what sort of rules will be in place, or what sort of gatherings people will be in the mood for this year, so we're focusing on the music and getting the really great titles on the RSD Official List this year into the stores and into your hands, in the most financially and socially responsible way.

The titles on the RSD 2020 Official List will be released at participating record stores on one of these three RSD Drops: August 29th, September 26th, or October 24th. The new version of The List, with newly assigned RSD Drops dates for each title is below. You can choose to view the List on their website, with added detail and artwork, or you can print out a PDF that can be used as a wishlist or shopping guide.

Tomorrow I will travel out to the human village to fetch a few pieces of vinyl, like the EP with BOMBS OF HADES that we will listen to today along with a few others that I have on my shopping list, things that I will come back to later on, probably tomorrow already :)

BOMBS OF HADES originally formed in 2002 at a party just to have an excuse to get drunk and bash out some old school crusty punk, the band went on a hiatus and came back rather swiftly and changing their style to death metal. But not without losing that old punk feel to it. Over time it grew into a proper band with a stable line up. Led by guitarist/singer Jonas Stålhammar (AT THE GATES, GOD MACABRE, THE LURKING FEAR, ex CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX, ex THE CROWN)

BOMBS OF HADES are ready to unveil a new EP as a taster before the 5th album is recorded during 2020. Since the last album "Death Mask Replica" was released in 2016 to critical acclaim it's about time. TRACKLIST: Side A Phantom Bell Bridge Of Sighs Kamikaze (FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND cover) Lungs (TOWNES VAN ZANDT cover) BOMBS OF HADES return to the studio following 2016’s Full-Length album, “Death Mask Replica”. Since that album Roger Iderman has come into replacing Butch Ekman on Bass. Let’s hear what the Swedes have put together with this new lineup.

Today's tune “Phantom Bell” kicks off with a good tempo, a great melody that forces thru the barriers of anti-culture people. Great balance in the force. Taken from a great EP that I really looking forward to grabbing tomorrow. The EP also features two excellent covers, the "Kamikaze" by FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND and "Lungs" by TOWENS VAN ZANDT.

Enjoy today's piece.

Alex Skolnick Trio - War Pigs

Thursday, time for a cover.

"War Pigs" is a song by British heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH. It is the opening track from their 1970 album Paranoid.

The original title of "War Pigs" was "Walpurgis", dealing with the witches' sabbath. "Walpurgis is sort of like Christmas for Satanists. And to me, war was the big Satan", said bassist and lyricist Geezer Butler. "It wasn’t about politics or government or anything. It was Evil itself. So I was saying 'generals gathered in the masses / just like witches at black masses' to make an analogy. But when we brought it to the record company, they thought 'Walpurgis' sounded too Satanic. And that's when we turned it into 'War Pigs'. But we didn't change the lyrics, because they were already finished."

During this time period, mandatory army service had recently ended in Britain but with the Vietnam War raging, many young men feared they'd be conscripted to fight in it. "That's what started this whole rebellion thing about not going to war for anybody", said Butler. "I was dreading being called up", the lyricist recalled.

Prior to its official release, the band often altered the lyrics significantly when performing it live. An example of this can be found on Ozzy Osbourne's compilation The Ozzman Cometh, which features an early version recorded by BLACK SABBATH for BBC Radio 1 on 26 April 1970. While Butler has said that "War Pigs" is "totally against the Vietnam War, about how these rich politicians and rich people start all the wars for their benefit and get all the poor people to die for them", vocalist Osbourne has stated that the group "knew nothing about Vietnam. It's just an anti-war song." The song's instrumental outro is entitled "Luke's Wall" on US releases of the album.

Drummer Bill Ward's first memory of performing the song was at The Beat Club in Switzerland in 1968. The band was required to play multiple sets every night and had little material in their repertoire at that point, so they would perform lengthy jam sessions to fill in the sets. Iommi has said that "War Pigs" originated from one of those jam sessions.

The addition of the air-raid siren and the speeding up of the song's end were done by producer Rodger Bain and engineer Tom Allom. The band had no input in these decisions, though they were pleased with the results.

Today's cover is made by Alex Skolnick, who is an American musician who is best known as the lead guitarist in the thrash metal band TESTAMENT from 1983 to 1993, and again from 2005. He has also performed with the Alex Skolnick Trio, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, SAVATAGE and METAL ALLEGIANCE.

Today's tune is filmed at the Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill, December 11th 2011. The tune can be found on Alex Skolnick Trio's album "Goodbye To Romance", 2004

Anderson Rocio - Paradise

The youngest daughter turns 14 today! The annual birthday dinner held at a restaurant nearby with two happy children and the wife.

To celebrate her I thought that I play a tune that she found on the Nexflix show Lucifer. The tune was played and I hear that she scream, who is she ???
Found out that it's a new rising star, wonderful voice.

The New Zealand, Auckland-based musician Anderson Rocio's song "Paradise" features in the fifth episode of Lucifer season five, screening on Netflix in New Zealand. According to Netflix's charts it publishes for its customers, the show is currently number one on the platform in NZ.

The songwriter was also impressed with the song's placement, in a pivotal scene in the show. The song plays during a scene featuring the character Mazikeen, played by actress Lesley-Ann Brandt. Rocio is signed to a licensing deal with THINK Music Inc, so is used to the possibility of having her songs used for television. However, how the song is used in the show caught her by surprise.

Enjoy today's tune and Happy birthday child, love you, dad.

Fotocrime - Love Is A Devil

FOTOCRIME is the creation of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist R. Forging a connection between the shadows of the underbelly of the mid-century American Dream, the ghostly corners of post-war Europe, and the present moment, FOTOCRIME breathes new life into Cold War paranoia, modern-day malaise, and smoky noir.

The new FOTOCRIME (the new darkwave project of R. Patterson from acclaimed hardcore punk band COLISEUM) full-length album "South Of Heaven", the second full-length chapter in the project's narrative, FOTOCRIME has found comfort on the fringe.

"South Of Heaven" is the backlit highway slithering from 2018's "Principle Of Pain", which bowed at the altar of post-street punks BLITZ while nodding at the megawatt gleam of DEPECHE MODE and churn of RED LORRY YELLOW LORRY. The stories comprising "South of Heaven" are winding and boundless, unfolding with unexpected paths and hairpin turns. Touching the myths of Saturn and Phaethon and mining the lives of Bruno Ganz and Francis Bacon, the album carves a landscape that spans both earthly and astral planes.

It is a record for late-night drives, a soundtrack for headlights illuminating the horizon. Produced by J. Robbins (JAWBOX) with sessions recorded by legendary engineer Steve Albini (SHELLAC, BIG BLACK, NIRVANA etc) at Electrical Audio in Chicago, "South Of Heaven" features guest appearances by Hayden Menzies (METZ), Nick Thieneman (YOUNG WIDOWS), Janet Morgan (CHANNELS), Erik Denno (KEROSENE 454), and Rob Moran (UNBROKEN) and continues with a swim in the open wounds and spilled blood of heartbreak, a harp-tinged appeal for care and company, and a postmortem of derailed destinies. Crackling guitars and stutter-stepping synth making songs on here bonafide grunge-wave burners.

Today's tune "Love Is A Devil" is taken from "South Of Heaven", it was released by Profound Lore Records on March 13, 2020, enjoy!

Rope Sect - The Great Flood

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and everything that is in the earth shall die."
Genesis 6:17

"The Great Flood" is the debut album from Germany's deathrock outfit ROPE SECT.

ROPE SECT quietly but auspiciously debuted in 2017 with their first EP, "Personae Ingratae", followed by the 7-inch Proselytes and is something of a "dark horse" for the label Iron Bonehead, ROPE SECT's disarmingly Spartan style of deathrock soon found fervent followers around the globe, and word-of-mouth momentum built from there.

With "The Great Flood" they proving that there were yet further twists to the trio's vast array of sounds and textures. The album is full of great melodies, shimmering atmosphere, clanging minimalism, sharp oscillations, and unforeseen insertions. An album that didn't hook me after the first spin, after a few turns and a relaxed mind it meanders through all obstacles of real piles of cast emotions that are in the way during this crazy time, thoughts about the future, work, and family, you understand what I mean. Each of these ten tunes touches in a way that it almost gives me shiver in ten different ways, both good and bad. The album starts with a quote from scripture Genesis 6:17 (the quote from the beginning of the post), that everything will die, an up-tempo goth rocker and shows an excellent start to the album. The rest of the tunes follows the same path, like "Rope Of The Just" with its great saturated guitars, hefty drumming, round and steady bass line, a melancholic vocal loop. The band slows down and take a calmer and more laid back approach in "Eleutheria". The guitar-based "Hiraeth", opens up with some hefty riffage, great rhythmic texture, almost in a punk rock way until the melancholic vocal steps in, and the tempo slow's down a bit and speed's up in the chorus. The same palette is used in "Flood Flower" and here Mat "Kvohst" McNerney steps in and grabs the mic, he also sings on "Prison Of You". "The Underground Paradise" is a haunting piece of tune, a lovely melody with a gothic charm that effortlessly draws you in. The instrumental "Non Serviemus" is a great rocker but gets a little lonely without the vocal. The album closes with the folky tune "Diluvian Darkness", with its waltzy intro, energy, and haunting melody makes it a perfect ending of the already stunning album. The album is pretty easy to listen to, but harder to analyze and understand.

Mat "Kvohst" McNerney (HEXVESSEL/GRAVE PLEASURES) contributes lyrics and guest vocals on two tunes. Mastering courtesy of HORRENDOUS Damian Herring. Released August 12, 2020

Dealing with ROPE SECT is joining a dance near the abyss, a walk on ruins, a final revel in the face of man's downfall, and craving for the ultimate freedom that either relieves or destroys you. Venerate the rope, fear the rope.

Sum: The debut album for the DARK ages.

Inmesher - Guitars, drums, lyrics & vocals
Harbinger - Bass
Gaarentwynder - Guitars
Redeemer - Drums

Guest Appearance:
Mat "Kvohst" McNerney (HEXVESSEL/GRAVE PLEASURES) - Main vocals and lyrics on "Prison of You" and "Flood Flower"

Quiet Riot - The Wild And The Young

Sunday, time for a classic.

The lead single from the QUIET RIOT'S fifth studio album "QR III", "The Wild And The Young" is a stadium hymn to the energy of youth. A great tune to end the week and pay some tribute to Frankie Banali, who died from the disease pancreatic cancer on August 20, 2020, at age 68. This left Banali as the second member of the classic Metal Health-era QUIET RIOT lineup to have died, following Kevin DuBrow in November 2007.

Frankie Banali
"The Wild And The Young" was accompanying video (featuring game show host Wink Martindale in a cameo appearance) painted an Orwellian picture of the future, where totalitarian militarists fought to wipe out rock and roll — a reference to the Senate hearings concerning explicit language in heavy metal songs.

"QR III" (or "Quiet Riot III") was released in 1986 on Pasha/CBS. It is the last album to feature lead singer Kevin DuBrow until the 1993 album "Terrified". Despite the record's name, this is actually the band's fifth studio album. However, it is their third major label/worldwide release. The band's first two releases were also titled "Quiet Riot" and "Quiet Riot II", suggesting this serves as a third self-titled album.

Following the massive success of "Metal Health" and the more modest reception of "Condition Critical" (which failed to duplicate "Metal Health's" success, but still went top 20 and receive a platinum certification), sales of "QRIII" were even lower, reaching only No. 31 on the US charts and has yet to achieve any certification at all. It marked QUIET RIOT'S final plunge away from stardom as the band's following releases would not enter the charts at all.

This marks the first QUIET RIOT album to feature Chuck Wright, formerly of GIUFFRIA, on bass as an official member - prior to this, he had performed some uncredited bass work on the band's earlier albums. He would rejoin the band on an on/off basis over the years and is in the current version of the group.

Enjoy today's tune.

Rückwater - Cruel Thing

The Tampere, Finnish-based stoner rock band RÜCKWATER did release their debut album "Supernova" on July 23rd, 2020 by Inverse Records. They release the first single and video in June for the tune "Rat In A Jar" and now they follow it up with the second single "Cruel Thing" and I thought we would pay attention to this by playing it here and now.

This 3-headed stoner rock band was born in 2010. Its first recording session took place in the same year. 7 songs were recorded during 3 burning hot summer days. "The masterpiece is called "So Far Out...". It was a huge review success... Well, it would've been if we had sent it to somewhere. But we don't give a fuck, comments the band!" Haha.

Since then they been giggin' and rockin' their asses off. And of course, they written some new classics meanwhile. Early in 2013, they began working on the second record. This time the process was much more diligent and it took many months to get the new 5 classics ready. But the result was worth the patience. "What's In The Box?" is probably the best EP ever!!!

In early 2016 they begin to record our third EP “Bonehead”. It was recorded live like the first EP “So Far Out”. Recording live is the most natural thing for the band. To catch the essence of RÜCKWATER. It makes the record feel more raw, real and dynamic. Frustration about almost everything is maybe the main source for the whole record, you can hear it in the lyrics and the way the band plays.

After the Ep is released, their intention is to play as many shows as possible and spread the message of Rück & Röll. Later this year, we begin to record our debut album, and hopefully get to play some shows abroad also.

Line-up:
Jussi Vehman / vocals & bass
Markku MacKone / vocals & guitar
Jarno MacKone / drums

Today's tune "Cruel Thing" is taken from the album "Supernova". The video is made by Jasu Rossi & Otto Lemetyinen. Vocalist/bass player Jussi Vehman comments: "Cruel Thing is absolutely atypical rock song about getting crazy with intoxicants. The hero of the story is trying to struggle her/himself clear from the unhealthy but oh, so dear habits. Musically this may be the most metal influenced piece of the album. I guess somebody's been listening to metal and thrash pioneers." Enjoy!

Black Crown Initiate - Violent Portraits Of Doomed Escape

Monday, a new week is here and it's time to introduce this week's "Record Of The Week".

"Violent Portraits Of Doomed Escape" is the latest album release by the Pennsylvania based progressive death metal group BLACK CROWN INITIATE. The band formed in 2012 and self-released their first EP Song of "The Crippled Bull", which was met with positive reviews. They began touring relentlessly in early 2014 with fellow extreme metal bands such as GOATWHORE, BEHEMOTH, and 1349, and lead to them being signed by eOne Music in June 2014. With eOne, they have released both "The Wreckage Of Stars" and their most recent effort "Selves We Cannot Forgive", which was released on July 22, 2016.

The origins of the name "BLACK CROWN INITIATE", there is a Tibetan spiritual leader that wears a black crown to signify help for humanity. We are all pervert pigs so we help by showing people that, first about ourselves.

"Violent Portraits Of Doomed Escape" was released on August 7, 2020, on Century Media Records. Their recent masterpiece was recorded by Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland which have already collaborated with several Bands like RIVERS OF NIHIL, AUGUST BURNS RED and LORNA SHORE.

"Violent Portraits Of Doomed Escape", Is something I have unconsciously longed for, wonderfully moaning, disturbing tones, bumpy harmonies, and other difficult pronounced oscillations. From the opening acoustic guitar tones of "Invitation", the slightly sad and clean vocal that sings a couple of lines until a crescendo of brutality overwhelms the tune with "Born, and set loose with his lust and his violence" and the tune takes a new turn. The driving rage of the harsh vocals and the musical mayhem slows down a notch and get mixed with clean vocals and a slightly more controlled state. Technical and progressive metal at it's best. Where bands like DREAM THEATER, OPETH, and FAIR TO MIDLAND comes in mind. The wonderful craziness continues over the rest of the album, it's like a perfect 5 meal dinner, where you get the best off everything is small portions and on top of it a production that sounds as good as a glass of fine vintage wine. From the epic "Son Of War", via the thunderous "Trauma Bonds" to the marvelous "Years In Frigid Light" where we get served a musical brilliance that is totally jaw-dropping. When we reach the middle of the album, we get served some instrumental Tibetan vocal warm-up with some throat singing in "Bellow". Back on track for part two on the record and "Death Comes In Reverse" is a little more withdrawn but "Jesus" so wonderful, what a flow. "Sun Of War" opens with a beautiful soft guitar intro before it shows his true self and burst out into a concrete tulip. "Holy Silence" is a really delicious piece of progressive death metal that leads into a softer note in the instrumental closing track "He Is The Path".

"Violent Portraits Of Doomed Escape" is an excellent album, what impressive musicianship they obtain, brilliant songwriting and I love their mix of the technical brutality and the depth in the melody which is really emotionally compelling. It's really captured me into their world. I Highly Recommend this album.

Ufo - Rock Bottom

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Rock Bottom" is a tune co-written by vocalist/lyricist Phil Mogg and then lead guitarist Michael Schenker, "Rock Bottom" was recorded initially for the third studio album "Phenomenon" in 1974, on which it runs to 6 minutes 22 seconds. It was also released as a single - a format that could not possibly do it justice - the live version from "Strangers In The Night" (hear it below) is unquestionably the definitive. This album was recorded on the band's 1978 US tour and was released on the Chrysalis Label in January the following year.

Running to 11 minutes 8 seconds, "Rock Bottom" is the high point with Schenker demonstrating awesome speed and technique, but this is more than a mere guitar solo; towards the end, Paul Raymond on keyboards provides a thrilling racing effect with the mercurial German, who, incredibly, was said to be unhappy with the recording. Others beg to differ. In 2004, Classic Rock magazine rated UFO's "Strangers In The Night" double album the #2 live rock album of all time behind only THIN LIZZY's "Live And Dangerous"; on the strength of that alone, "Rock Bottom" must surely rate as one of the top hundred if not top ten heavy metal tracks of the 1970s if not of all time.

UFO largely left their blues-based "space rock" sound behind, in part due to the presence of their new guitarist, German 19-year-old Michael Schenker. The album was produced by Leo Lyons, bass guitarist of British rock group TEN YEARS AFTER. All tracks were recorded at Morgan Studios in London. The original cover design and photos were produced by Hipgnosis.

The British heavy metal band IRON MAIDEN performed a cover of "Doctor Doctor" when Blaze Bayley was with the band as their vocalist. IRON MAIDEN's cover version is included in "Lord Of The Flies" single and also in the Eddie's Archive boxed set on the "Best Of The B-Sides" collection. Traditionally, IRON MAIDEN uses the UFO live version, played over the venue PA system, to signal the audience that they are about to take the stage.

Today's song is dedicated to the iconic bass player Pete Way founder of UFO, WAYSTED, and, latterly, The Pete Way Band has passed away on Friday the 14th. He sustained life-threatening injuries in an accident two months ago but fought hard until finally succumbing to those injuries. Pete Way was a much loved and highly regarded figure among rock fans, critics and fellow musicians alike. Best known for his work with UFO, Pete’s energetic live performances were at the heart of the band’s countless world tours. His melodic bass lines underpinned the catalogue of enduring rock classics upon which UFO’s reputation and legacy were founded. Pete’s post UFO work included collaborating with “Fast” Eddie Clarke from MOTÖRHEAD - the two putting together FASTWAY with HUMBLE PIE drummer Jerry Shirley and bassist for his long time friend, Ozzy Osbourne. He then put together his own band WAYSTED. Pete’s keen ear for song arrangements have also seen him serve as producer for popular hard rock acts such as TWISTED SISTER and the COCKNEY REJECTS. Pete had recently finished a solo album, “Walking On The Edge” with producer Mike Clink (GUNS N ROSES “Appetite For Destruction” amongst many more.) He had a biography published “A Fast Ride Out Of Here” in 2017 and an album “Amphetamine” which is currently out on Cargo Records.

Enjoy today's tune and R.I.P. Pete.

Varg - Zeichen

The wolves of VARG return to their roots with their seventh full-length album, Zeichen (engl. “signs”), to be released on September 18, 2020 via Napalm Records. The album marks a new era of the wolves haunted by wild battles, death and bloodlust - a resurrection from the fields of Pagan Metal, pairing razor-sharp melodic death riffs with Freki's furious vocals. Forget anything you have seen or heard about them in the past few years and embrace the new album as a reboot of a band that never ceased to evolve and has gotten rid of everything superfluous.

VARG sets an uncompromising sign with first monumental single “Zeichen”, which comes along with an official video and introduces the concept behind their upcoming offering. Visually and lyrically, their first single draws the listener deep into the Viking era, picturing their traditions, a strong community cohesion, ancient runes, the old gods, and their beliefs. The chorus gets stuck in your head, coalesces with the blasting power of riffs, and perfectly showcases the reincarnation of VARG. ”Zeichen” is the ultimate hymn heralding the age of the wolves.

Singer Freki states: “”Zeichen” is the heart of our new album, maybe even of the "new" VARG. It was important to us to release the title song first along with an official music video, since it reflects the energy of our new full-length both musically and visually and invites our fans to the legendary era of the Vikings. Follow us on a journey!”

VARG was formed in 2005 in Coburg, Bavaria by guitarist Philipp "Freki" Seiler and drummer Silvester "Fenrier" Grundmann. They were joined by bassist Nivel, vocalist Frost, and guitarist Da'ath. VARG touches heathen topics but also present circumstances. All members become one with their stage-personas during their live shows, which makes them a real work of art. They are best known for issuing a cease and desist letter to a Swedish techno artist of the same name in 2019. The band's name means "wolf" in Swedish. Their songs deal mainly with paganism and Nordic mythology.

Today's tune "Zeichen" is the title tune of the upcoming album, set to be released on September 18th, 2020, enjoy!

Finntroll - Forsen

The trolls are back – angrier, hungrier and meaner than ever! “Vredesvävd” is FINNTROLL’s seventh full-length, the first in long seven years. The title translates to “Wrath-woven”, which aptly implies what the vigorous, unapologetic and ill-spirited record is all about. Recorded and mixed at the renowned Sonic Pump Studios, mastered at Chartmakers and produced by keyboardist-composer Henri “Trollhorn” Sorvali with vocalist Mathias “Vreth” Lillmåns acting as his right hand, “Vredesvävd” presents the pointy-eared gang of misfits at their finest.

FINNTROLL was born by half-accident at a Helsinki-based rehearsal room in 1997, when two drunken friends, guitarist Somnium (1977–2003) and vocalist Katla, started experimenting with an alluring fusion of black metal riffs and Finnish “humppa” rhythms. With an added boost of folk melodies, fierce drumming, and poetic Swedish lyrics, they quickly managed to create their own unique musical style and antichristian trollish folklore.

Their highly original debut album “Midnattens Widunder” (1999), featuring a full line-up of Teemu “Somnium” Raimoranta, Jan “Katla” Jämsén, Samuli “Skrymer” Ponsimaa (guitar), Trollhorn (keyboards), Samu “Beast Dominator” Ruotsalainen (drums) and Sami “Tundra” Uusitalo (bass), was an underground hit, which paved the way to the future success. Its manhunt themed successor “Jaktens Tid” (2001) took things several steps further. With catchier songs, clearer production and exquisite, parallel artwork, executed by guitarist Skrymer, the trolls were ready to take over the world. At the height of their newfound international fame, the band was struck with two major tragedies. Firstly, Katla lost his voice due to a tumor in his throat. He had to go through a series of operations forcing him to quit the band that he had co-founded. Secondly, the other founding member, Somnium, fell off a bridge and died tragically. Their last works as members of FINNTROLL were captured on the acoustic EP “Visor Om Slutet” (2003). The EP also introduced Katla’s successor, Tapio Wilska, a scene veteran with numerous albums under his belt.

Wilska’s first full-length FINNTROLL album “Nattfödd” was a huge success, catapulting the band to new heights in album sales as well as festival billings and tours around the world. The upbeat troll anthem “Trollhammaren” was a bonafide hit single by any and all standards, but the band chose to cast aside fortune and fame, and take a completely different approach on their next album. The pitch-black and austere “Ur Jordens Djup” saw yet another crucial line-up change, as Wilska stepped down and handed his mic to Vreth, a versatile prodigy of Swedish-speaking decent, as was Katla, who was rehired as the band’s freestanding lyricist. Despite the more underground and black metalish approach, the band toured relentlessly around the world, broadening their popularity.

“Nifelvind” took the band’s cinematic elements to the next level and introduced an even wider spectrum of folk influences from different parts of the globe. The highly unusual “mariachi band from hell” mixture, spiced up with a steampunk meets troll ears visual image, hit the bull’s eye: The album charted #8 in Finland and #31 in Germany. “Blodsvept” continued where “Nifelvind” left off with a slightly more aggressive and carnevalistic approach with unpredictable twists and turns that vary from Danny Elfman-Esque trickery to swing music and everything in between.

The band had cemented their position early on at the very top of their game, often regarded as one of the pioneers and leaders of the folk metal scene, but it’s not an easy task to reinvent oneself with every single release. It took seven years, but FINNTROLL is back with yet another vastly innovative jaw-dropper and the album is probably a kick-ass release.

Today's tune "Forsen" is taken from the upcoming album "Vredesvävd", set to be released on the September 18th, 2020, Screenwriter & Director: Jan Andersson & Jessica Koivistoinen, enjoy!
