DeWolff - Wolffpack

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The Dutch psychedelic Southern blues rockers DEWOLFF returned earlier this year with a new album "Wolffpack".

I'm sorry to say, but this is another record that had to stand and wait kindly in the album box with newcomers, with a constant flood of new records, it's easy to miss some. I do not know why this one, I guess I have to blame temporary confusion, but now it's here, better late than never.

The kaleidoscopic warriors were not long into their 2019 "Tascam Tapes" European Tour when the Covid19 pandemic broke and they, like so many others, had to turn back and head home. However, DEWOLFF is not a band to sit still. When it came to studio album number nine, they had no intention of just waiting for things to blow over.

DEWOLFF is a very creative bunch of guys that over the past three years they have released "Thrust" (2018), "Live & Outta Sight II" (2019) and "Tascam Tapes" (2020) – and despite the pandemic cutting short their touring last year the trio set about creating "Wolffpack", an antidote to the shoestring Tascam Tapes.

"Wolffpack" have been been created in their studio bunker in the Medieval town of Utrecht, The Netherlands. The album may feel a bit scattered to new listeners, but with a wide range of their previous creations where all styles are used again, a bit like the raisins from their own cake are picked. So it will be a bit difficult to decide what kind of genre we really get served here. Anyhow, this is a great spin where the brothers Pablo and Luka van de Poel and Robin Piso have created another majestic record. Where they are experimenting with soundscapes, fuzzy riffing, swamp-rock with horse shoe vibes, infectionasied melodies that makes you as a listner a happy human beening.

The album opens up with a soulful funk rocker of "Yes You Do", a tune that is very catchy. Followed in the same vein in "Treasure City Moonchild", where the third song "Do Me" is a power ballad, a really beautiful one. "Sweet Loretta" is a bluesy one and has a pretty interesting story about "Loretta, the protagonist's childhood sweetheart. She has a rich dad, but he's really conservative, and so she can only inherit his money if she marries a man. But she's lesbian. So, the protagonist, who's also out for this old guy's money, suggests they play pretend and marry so they can split the money." "Half Of Your Love" is another funky, light disco one. Great vibe that get's your legs move. "Lady J" has some cool lyrics that are based on the idea that Lady Justice seems to have a scale that dosen't measure the "weight" of your crime but the tone of your skin. The tune have a great 70s groove. "Roll Up The Rise" is a car driving tune, think Cadillac. The blusey fuzzed-up "Bona Fide" is a thrill and "R U My Saviour" continues but with added horns to spice it up a bit. The album closes up with the folk bluesih forlorn "Hope Train", inspired by Colson Whitehead’s brilliant, Pulitzer winning novel. DEWOLFF really experimenting with hazy soundscapes, loose fizzy riffs, nice and well thought lyrics and marvelous groovy melodies to keep the intrest high. Highly Recomended! Released by Mascot Label Group on 5 February 2021

Sum: A really creative release by these Dutch blues rockers.

Today's tune "Yes You Do", taken from the album "Wolffpack", enjoy!

DeWolff - Thrust

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Thrust" is the sixth album from the three-headed rock 'n roll monster DEWOLFF. The band was formed in the Deep South of Netherlands in 2007, when they were barely teenagers, by brothers Pablo (singer/guitarist) and Luka van de Poel (Drums) and Hammond organist Robin Piso. DEWOLFF was after Harvey Keitel's character, Winston Wolfe, in Pulp Fiction, their luscious and expansive neo-psychedelia saw them burst out of the city.

They have released 5 studio albums previously, all have catapulted them up the charts in their homeland. Whilst still in their teens they played the prestigious Paradiso in Amsterdam and took to the main stage at Pinkpop Festival in front of 10,000 fans, relentless touring followed, earmarking them as a formidable live act. Since then they've played to 30,000 at Lowlands Festival, 15,000 at Sziget, as well as Reeperbahn, Rockpalast, Rock Oz Arenas and supported THE BLACK KEYS, BLUES PILLS, TEN YEARS AFTER and DEEP PURPLE.

"Thrust" is a great record with a wide span in the blues-oriented rock that DEWOLFF has made a great footprint on over the years. On the album, they mix up Blues Rock with Country/Desert Rock, softer Pop Rock to Happy Funk Rock with a load of Seventies influences.

Big tunes like the opening "Big Talk" with it vibrating buzz tones, well-balanced vocal, funky drumming and whiny guitar to the more funkier rocker "California Burning" to the half paced soulful Blues ballad "Once In A Blue Moon" with a heartbreaking Hammond solo. "Double Crossing Man" is an energetic and catchy Boogie Rocker with Isaac Hayes baritone entries. "Tombstone Child" is a real catchy Rocker, excellent vocals and clever riffing. Atmospheric fuzzy melody in "Deceit & Woo", cool tune with an odd Blues break in the middle, swings with a charm. "Freeway Flight" is a beautiful and soft Blues piece. "Tragedy? Not Today" is a great gleefully tune from the past, classic American 70's riffing. "Sometimes" have a cool Low fi touch, Reggae tones with marvelous vocals. "Swain" is a hard driven piece, big and funky. "Outta Step & Ill At Ease", a real beauty closes the album, slow, folkish, heartful and emotionally.

Sum: "Thrust" is an excellent album that is worth your time, check it up.

"Thrust" was released on May 4th via Mascot Records.

Today's tune "Outta Step & Ill At Ease" is taken from "Thrust", "The tune is a very autobiographical song. It's about life on the road, being away from home and missing the ones you love. Touring is the most awesome thing in the world, but at times you can get drunk, fat, lonely and miserable. It was written in a hotel room in Madrid when I was feeling particularly drunk, fat, lonely and miserable. We got the idea of playing this song with as much musician friends as possible, firstly because we're on tour so often that we don't get the chance to play with all these wonderful people as much as we'd like to. And secondly, because it's an epic song that has to be played with an epic gang of people!” – Pablo van de Poel, enjoy!

DeWolff - Sugar Moon

DEWOLFF is a three-headed rock ’n roll monster from the Netherlands’ Deep South: it’s a fire-breathing love child of the great Rock bands from the 1970’s and psychedelic cosmic radiation from the future. DEWOLFF was formed in 2007 by singer/guitarist Pablo van de Poel, brother/drummer Luka van de Poel and Hammond organist Robin Piso, and has grown to be one of the greatest live acts around. It’s Leon Russell meets DEEP PURPLE, BLACK KEYS meet ALLMAN BROTHERS. But above all, DEWOLFF sounds like DeWolff; an old soul in a young body; an eccentric and very hard-rocking young band that has already released six studio albums and a live album. Seeing DeWolff live is an experience one will never forget: it’s a mixture of inexhaustible energy, great musicianship, contagious enthusiasm and a play-like-it’s-your-last-show-mentality that seems pretty rare nowadays.

On June the 6th they announced that "we started recording our 7th album!"

Today's tune "Sugar Moon" is taken from the latest album "ROUX-GA-ROUX"
