Ape Skull - A is for Ape

APE SKULL is an Italian trio consisting of Pierpaolo Pastorelli (bass), Fulvio Cartacci (guitar) and Giuliano Padroni (drums and lead vocal).

APE SKULL - formerly COLORSOUND - was formed in 2008 and the band immediately started performing live with cover tracks such as Children's Heritage (BLOODROCK), Free and Easy (MINERAL WATER), I Got No Time (ORANGE PEEL), Driver (DAMNATION OF ADAM BLESSING) etc. This would only serve to mature the band's own sound with a new creative drive in a genre they already embraced in previous bands. Right from the start, the band also includes original songs, which are never recorded nor published. The first, self titled, album (Ape Skull) was released in 2013 by Heavy Psych Sounds. The record is published on vinyl and CD and it's reviews appear in many magazines and websites dedicated to Rock music. In May 2015 the band released their second album "Fly Camel Fly", on H.P.S., with 8 original songs and their cover of "Driver" from DAMNATION OF ADAM BLESSING, printed on vinyl and cd.

The music is very classic with vibes from Jimi Hendrix to the CREAM.

Today's tune "A is for Ape" is taken from the second album "Fly Camel Fly". The video is a live clip from Gaswerk - Winterthur (Ch) 15/04/2016 with Belly Hole Freak on Bass. Enjoy!

Toad - Stay

Sunday, time for a classic!

TOAD were a Swiss hard rock band, formed by ex-BRAINTICKET members in Basel, Switzerland during 1970.

Their best known songs were covers of JIMI HENDRIXs "Purple Haze" and THE BEATLES "I Saw Her Standing There", along with originals "Usin' My Life" and "Stay!". Their first two albums were engineered by Martin Birch.

Though the band was not commercially successful outside of their own country, they were a popular live act because of their furiosity, musicianship and stage antics. Most notably when lead guitarist Vic Vergeat played the guitar with his teeth. Their concerts were often compared to those of JIMI HENDRIX.

The band went through lineup changes during its history, but the longest lasting and most consistent lineup was Vic Vergeat: lead guitar and vocals, Werner Fröhlich: bass and vocals and Cosimo Lampis: drums.

Today's tune "Stay" is taken from "Toad", the eponymous debut album by the Swiss rock band of the same name. It was engineered by legendary British producer Martin Birch. After the recording finished, singer Benjamin Jaeger left the group and was not replaced. The Video is from 1971, enjoy!

Tunga Moln - All Along the Watchtower

Tuesday, time for a cover and today we really have a great one.

The Swedes in TUNGA MOLN were invited to take part in Magnetic Eye Records' "Electric Ladyland [Redux]" tribute to Jimi Hendrix. They submitted their interpretation of "All Along The Watchtower", a hard task indeed, but something they solved brilliant and all the vocals is in their own native language, Swedish.

"All Along the Watchtower" is a song written and recorded by the American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. The song initially appeared on his 1967 album John Wesley Harding, and it has been included on most of Dylan's subsequent greatest hits compilations. Since the late 1970s, he has performed it in concert more than any of his other songs. Different versions appear on four of Dylan's live albums.

Covered by numerous artists in various genres, "All Along the Watchtower" is strongly identified with the interpretation Jimi Hendrix recorded for Electric Ladyland with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The Hendrix version, released six months after Dylan's original recording, became a Top 20 single in 1968 and was ranked 47th in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Electric Ladyland [Redux] was released July 3, 2015 DIGITAL / November 27, 2015 DELUXE CD/ DOUBLE GATEFOLD 2X VINYL LP on Magnetic Eye Records. Get the vinyl here: http://merhq.net

"Electric Ladyland [Redux]" is a tribute to the masterwork of James Marshall Hendrix celebrating his brilliant 1968 chart toping double album. We have assembled some of the most amazing bands and likeminded record labels to bring you Electric Ladyland covered in full; all 16 tracks. From London's ELEPHANT TREE providing a sitar infused opening track to ELDER closing out Side D with their cover of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return) this truly is the best effort we could possibly have delivered in celebrating one of our favorite musicians and his incredible vision for what an album could be.

With tracks from bands such as EARTHLESS, ALL THEM WITCHES, SUMMONER, MOTHERSHIP, WO FAT and more and album cover and jacket art illustrated by David Paul Seymour we are knowing you will love this album as much as we do.

Enjoy TUNGA MOLNs version!

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Winterland

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week", well I got some appetite for Live recordings and I can't stop my self, save your breath and let's continue the "Live Recording" for one more week (:

So this week's "Record Of The Week" is the posthumous release "Live at Winterland" ("Winterland"), a live album by English-American rock band THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE. It capturing the legendary guitarist and the original Experience at the height of their powers across three concerts at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, where they played two shows each night on October 10, 11 and 12, 1968. The album was released posthumously by Rykodisc in 1987.

"Live at Winterland" is clearly the centerpiece of the most recent wave of JIMI HENDRIX re-issues. The long out of print, single-disc 1987 edition of this record has been expanded to a eight LP (or four CD) set that is smartly sequenced so as to both replicate the highlights of every show and still make sense in a single, if extended, listening session.

JIMI HENDRIXs sonic assaults and attacks hypnotized, frightened and amazed audiences in the late '60s. That's the case on the 13 (36 in the box) songs from a 1968 Winterland concert where he turned the guitar into a battering ram, forcing everyone to notice and making every solo and note a memorable one.

On the box release "Winterland" are most of the songs performed twice, and staples such as "Purple Haze’ are performed up to four times each. But the great thing about it is how the guys constantly emphasizing different aspects of these songs, so all tunes are pretty unique.

Sum: If there is one "Live" recording you would like to obtain with JIMI HENDRIX, the you should get "Winterland"

Today's tune "Like a Rolling Stone" is a 1965 song by the American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Critics have described the track as revolutionary in its combination of different musical elements, the youthful, cynical sound of Dylan's voice, and the directness of the question "How does it feel?" "Like a Rolling Stone" transformed Dylan's image from folk singer to rock star, and is considered one of the most influential compositions in postwar popular music. Rolling Stone magazine listed the song at number one in their "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list. The song has been covered by numerous artists, from THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE and THE ROLLING STONES to THE WAILERS and GREEN DAY.

Kingston Wall - I Feel Love

KINGSTON WALL was a psychedelic/progressive rock group from Helsinki, Finland, originally formed in 1987. Influenced by such artists as JIMI HENDRIX, LED ZEPPELIN and PINK FLOYD, the group combined eastern themes, mysticism and vivid psychedelia with acid-rock. The band consisted of Petri Walli (guitars, lead vocals), Jukka Jylli (bass, backing vocals) and Sami Kuoppamäki (drums, percussion). Walli took the most active role in the band. He formed the group, composed most of the songs and wrote all the lyrics. He was also KINGSTON WALLs producer and manager and ran the band's own Trinity record label.

During their active time, KINGSTON WALL never achieved mainstream popularity. All their albums were printed in limited amounts and released on Walli's own independent label, Trinity. It was only after the group had disbanded that their popularity slowly grew through word-of-mouth.

KINGSTON WALL was known for their energetic live performances. The band held their own Freak-Out Club three times in Helsinki. They started playing live from small local pubs but as their popularity grew they could sell out the biggest clubs in Helsinki.

Todays tune "I Feel Love" is a cover of the Donna Summer classic. Taken from the second studio album "II". The album was originally released under the band's own record label, Trinity, in February 1993. It was also licensed and released in Japan by Japanese Zero record label. Both of these prints have been sold-out in the 1990s and are considered somewhat collector's items. The Japanese print included English lyrics in the jewel case insert booklet as well as Japanese translations of the lyrics.

In 1998, Finnish record label Zen Garden (later SonyBMG Finland) re-released the whole KINGSTON WALL discography as remastered versions along with a 2-disc limited print-version of each album which included a Bonus CD featuring rare/unreleased studio and live material. These 2-disc versions have also been sold-out and are considered collectibles. The album is still available as a remastered 1-disc version from Zen Garden (2006).

A new 7" version will be released at Svart Records on July 12th.

Blues Pills - Gypsy

I head across the country, looking for Mexico
I got stuck in Kansas with no place to go
Oh I'm a gypsy, that's what I am
Uh, I'm a gypsy, and I don't give a damn
Somebody took my load
And I got no place to go
But I'm trying to find my mind
Yes I'm trying to find myself

That's the first verse from the song "Gypsy" by the Swedish rock act BLUES PILLS.

The band formed back in 2011 when Elin Larsson, Cory Berry and Zack Anderson, all just in their early twenties, formed a group which should quickly become one of the most acclaimed and interesting bands in music. Behold the birth of a new musical experience, an experience we thought was long gone, lost in time and space. Behold the birth of BLUES PILLS.

The young American-Swedish-French quartet create a very unique, intense and extraordinary rock atmosphere while at the same time having a major mainstream appeal that takes you right back to the time of BLUES PILLS’ ancestors Aretha Franklin, THE ORIGINAL FLEETWOOD MAC, LED ZEPPELIN, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and CREAM. Driving bass lines, grooving drums and guitar solos from another planet by the only 18 year old Dorian Sorriaux, harmonized and tied together with such easiness, such delight, by Elin’s incredible voice.

Todays tune "Gypsy" is taken from the self-titled debut album, released on 25 July 2014. Recorded in Gothenburg with infamous producer Don Alsterberg (GRAVEYARD). The artwork is by the incredible artist Marijke Koger-Dunham and it was painted sometime in the late 60’s. The Video by Zack Anderson and Color by Filmgruppe Chaos.

Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight

As we do a tune from every gig we work on I was suposed to do Ildivo...
Hm....not really my cup of tea... BUT I read a book :-D

"Eric Clapton, The Autobiography" A real great book, I read it in 2 days.

Its his full story from when he was born to present time.
Time to time very strong and sad story but it really got to me.
He was raised by her granparents, which he didnt know b4 10 years old.
The woman who was his "sister" was his mum. He grew up in a English town Ripley.
Many storys about other artists and specially George Harrison and also Jimi Hendrix.

I saw Eric last time he performed in Stockholm last year, a wonderful gig.

The tune of today have a special story, He and his girlfriend Patti was suposed to go on this party and Patti took sooo long time to put make up on, get the right clothes etc..and Eric was done in a moment and sat there and waited for her to get ready.....and waited and waited....then this tune came around :D

Eric Clapton held a party at his Surrey house celebrating his marriage to Patti Boyd. Clapton had set-up a small stage in the garden and as the evening progressed Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr ended up jamming together along with Clapton, Ginger Baker and Mick Jagger on May 19, 1979. They divorsed 1989.

Now Eric is married to Melia McEnery and still are.

Enjoy,
Hugs Thetania

Jimi Hendrix - Red House

In the middle of the move, we throw out a Sunday Classics.

"Red House" is a song written by Jimi Hendrix and originally recorded by The Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1966. The song, a slow twelve-bar blues, "is one of the most traditional in sound and form of all his official recordings". It was developed during his pre-Experience days while Hendrix was performing in Greenwich Village and was inspired by earlier blues songs. Hendrix recorded several studio and live versions during his career; later, "Red House" has been recorded by a variety of blues and other artists.

Plektrum Art

The theme of "Red House" is "as old as the blues itself—the singer's woman doesn't love him any more and has moved". According to Noel Redding, Hendrix told him "the song was written about his old high school girlfriend Betty Jean Morgan", although her house was reportedly brown. It has been suggested that Linda Keith's (who brought Hendrix to the attention of Chas Chandler) friend's New York apartment with "the red velvet walls and decor influenced Jimi's writing". However, for Billy Cox "As far as I know, 'Red House' didn't have any significance in reference to a particular person, place or thing. It was just a blues number that Jimi put together".
