Messa - Leah

The Italian MESSA plays an evoking doom metal with a dark jazz twist. Deliciously haunting female vocals, rhodes piano and 70’s fuzz guitars combine to conjure a sound that is all of their own. It's like a mix between a doomy JEX THOTH with BOHREN UND DER CLUB OF GORE atmosphere, topped with URFAUST and John Coltrane, interesting, hell yeah.

The band has moved from the droning occult doom of their first LP "Belfry" to a new, darker and more atmospheric approach clearly showcased in their new record "Feast for Water", a concept album centered on the introspective, symbolic and ritual features of the liquid element.

The Italian 4-piece band MESSA emerged on the first day of 2014. The extreme diversity of their musical background immediately proved to be essential in the construction of the band’s sound: Prog, Black Metal, Punk, Dark Ambient, jazz, Blues and Doom. all those influences have been channeled into a sonic cauldron that the band defines “Scarlet Doom”

“a belfry obscuring your mind, calling you to come by...
leaving scarlet velvet behind you.”

MESSA consists of:

MARCO MESSA bass/guitars (the sade, sultan bathery)
SARA voice (restos humanos)
ALBERTO lead guitar (glincolti, douge)
MISTYR drums (nox interitus,Sterbenzeit)

MESSA is out touring with SABBATH ASSEMBLY, I will do my best to check them out when they come to Stockhom, to bad that MESSA ain't following them here, see the dates for MESSA tour below.

Today's tune "Leah", the third track from "Feast for Water" album, released April 2018 on Aural Music, Video by Laura Sans, Written and shot by Laura Sans and Marco Messa, enjoy!

Sabbath Assembly - I Satan

New week and it's time to reveal "Record Of The Week". Sabbath Assembly returns with another set of religious themes on their third album Quaternity.

What is missing from the Christian concept of “trinity”? Carl Jung suggests that the fourth element is what many reject – the evil in our nature; or by another view, the feminine, which throughout Church history has been equated with evil and duly suppressed. To restore this element to the trinity creates Quaternity, which in William Blake’s Proverbs of Hell represents “the fourfold nature of man and his relationship to the divine.”

Quaternity is primarily acoustic in format, with an array of classical percussion and strings creating an entirely new sound for the band. Unlike its predecessors Restored to One and Ye Are Gods, Quaternity offers a majority of original material with inspiration from the Process found primarily in the lyrics.

Side A of Quaternity the album begins with a look at the four deities worshipped in the theology of the Process Church of the Final Judgment -- Christ, Jehovah, Lucifer, and Satan –each tune providing the deity with its own voice, unmediated by Christian prejudice. Lucifer is again the light bearer, Satan the source of primal strength, Jehovah the vengeful destroyer, and Christ the master of death.

Side B explores another four: the horsemen of the apocalypse of Revelations. This intricate, sidelong piece was conceived in anticipation of 12/21/12. For those who got the 7” last year, this is the full 20-minute version.

Quaternity once again features Jamie Myers on vocals and Dave “Xtian” Nuss on percussion. Special guests on the album include Daron Beck of Pinkish Black accompanying Jamie on vocals, Kevin Hufnagel of Gorguts on guitar, Mat McNerney and Marja Konttinen of Hexvessel reciting sacred texts, liturgical chanting by Jessika Kinney (Sunn 0))), Wolves in the Throne Room), bass from Colin Marston of Behold… The Arctopus, and organ from “Nameless Void” of Negative Plane.

 Vinyl pressing info: 600 x black 400 x gold

The intention of Sabbath Assembly is intention is to provide moving and transformational music for the current generation. The band began in 2009 as interpreters of the hymns of the Process Church of the Final Judgment, a religious movement based in the UK and US that came and went in the 60′s and 70’s period of spiritual awakening. The stance of the band, and its interpretation of Process teaching, is that neither good or evil can be fully repressed; therefore embracing both sides in balance brings the most satisfaction and peace. Considering this, they each have a personal responsibility to attend to both in their light and shadow sides, their passion and their imagination. Conformity, or “the way of the Grey,” has no place in Processean individuation of the Self.

The three Processean deities, Jehovah, Satan, and Lucifer, represent important aspects of themselves to be celebrated — duty, rebelliousness, and an unbridled joy for life. The Christ archetype allows us to see these as whole rather than in conflict, unfolding “a path of vision and reality, sometimes painful, and always intense.” –The Gods and Their People 1.13

Todays tune "I, Satan", is the heaviest track on the album, the tune have a doomish touch with a great hard atmosphere. The tune is taken from the Record Of The Week "Quaternity" Available on Svart Records, Relesed on March 28, 2014

Jex Thoth - Separated At Birth

Jessica "Jex" Thoth is an American vocalist. She is well-known for being the singer of Jex Thoth and the psychedelic rock band Sabbath Assembly.

Earlier this week, organized club Pussy a Go Go, a concert with Jex Thoth + Saturnalia Temple + Anguish. Pussy a Go Go has certainly managed to bring in lots of great bands, so a great tribute to the girls behind the club. Together with Fritz Corner do they entertains Stockholm awesome bands all year. My two completely clear favourites in the music scene right now here in Stockholm. I follow the club releases of up coming shows with an Iron fist ... hehe

Jex Thoth is one of those bands who impressed most on me in recent years. Ever since I first heard the self-titled debut from 2008, I nearly knelt before their altars. Jex Thoth is one of the fastest growing and right now most renowned bands in their genre. Nearly a year ago, they was over and redeemed Stockholm with their music.

The show at Debaser was simply magic live, psychedelic heavy rock with bewitching vocals, light candles and incense to achieve the perfect feeling. You could watch Jessica's trance-like dance, which spread like a disease on the audience. She has a voice with virtually unmatched awe-depth, charisma and a maximum teeming set of vocal chords. What atmosphere it was. There I was, swaying with the music, almost that fell into a trance, enjoying to the full so that I almost forgot to take pictures.

After the show, I just had to go up to the band and thank them for a great evening. And it was not just me who thought the same thing, even Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass) arrived quickly and praised for Jex Thoth a great show, when Jessica realized it was the Messiah, then came the tears, it may have been the case that Candlemass belonged to one of the influences of Jex Thoth.

Today, Pussy a Go Go presents Obnoxious Youth + Danava @ Debaser Slussen

Here is some pictures from the show!

Earth - Father Midnight

Tonight in Stockholm at Strand! Earth and Sabbath Assembly! The fact that they play in the evening has completely passed me until I checked out a blog colleague's blog, crap, was my first reaction, hell was my second. Realizing that I will miss this. Actually bought their latest works on Vinyl during Record Store Day, the band are relatively new in my world but has been played a lot in the recent days, an awesome album simply. It will certainly be a cruel evening for those who get there.

So who are Earth?

Earth is an American musical group based in Seattle, Washington, formed in 1989 and led by guitarist Dylan Carlson. Earth’s music is mostly instrumental, and can be divided into two distinct stages. Their early work grew out of the Seattle-area grunge scene and is recognized as pioneering the genre of drone doom — an experimental offshoot of doom metal, characterized by droning, minimalist, lengthy, and repetitive structures. Earth's early albums were often recorded as a duo (Carlson and a bass guitarist), and could be seen as a variation of the experimental doom-influenced metal of The Melvins. Following a hiatus due to Carlson's personal problems, Earth reappeared with a markedly different sound. Their music was still slow-paced and lengthy, but now with a drummer and featuring strong elements of country music and jazz.

Earth’s brand new studio album, ”Angels Of Darkness, Demons of Light 1″, a fine testament to the fact that they have come a long way since 1989. Drawing on inspiration from both British Folk-Rock bands the Pentangle and Fairport Convention and the North African Tuareg band Tinariwen, the new material, while still ‘heavy’ is much more fluid and melodically oriented, less dense and more textured and nuanced. It contains greater improvisatory interplay between the musicians.

On one hand the new album acknowledges previous recordings, sonically it cultivates the jazz infused Americana presented on The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull and as a further nod to the past, Earth returned to Avast studios to work with producer Stuart Hallerman (Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Built To Spill, and Earth2!) again. On the other hand, there have been some significant changes which have given birth to yet another new sound, the main change being the line up and so joining Dylan and Adrienne on the album is cellist Lori Goldston (Nirvana, David Byrne, Black Cat Orchestra, Laura Veirs) and Karl Blau (K Records, Laura Veirs, Microphones) on electric bass.

Songs ‘Father Midnight’ and Hell’s Winter’ definitely retain some of their former glory on the Bees Made Honey… whilst the cello, though subtle at times, adds a more haunting tone to songs ‘Old Black’ and ‘Descent to the Zenith’ which are so powerful that they have the ability to move one to tears. It is the album’s closer and title track which is the boldest step in a new direction for Earth, utilizing the complimentary tones of cello, electric bass and Dylan’s guitar, leaving the notes to hang contemplatively in the air before Adrienne’s drum beats finally emerge. The repetition throughout the song is seemingly simplistic, though as we all know by now, there is absolutely nothing simple about holding a note or beat for as long as Earth do.

There are many breaths of fresh air in this new record, many hopeful tones and drones as well as more eerie ones. One thing is for sure, this incarnation of Earth excels all expectations.
Angels of Darkness, Demons Of Light 1: Arrived on February 2011.

Earth is:

• Adrienne Davies – trap kit and percussives featuring sea hooves and satans’ knuckles
• Lori Goldston – cello and devices
• Dylan R. Carlson – electric guitar and devices
• Karl Blau – electric bass guitar

The touring band will feature Dylan Carlson, Adreinne Davies, Lori Goldston, and Angelina Baldoz on bass.

Todays tune ”Father Midnight” is a track from the latest and sixth full-length studio album ”Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I”. Cello is introduced as a new instrument, along with the usual ones being used since the album Hex. Dylan Carlson describes the album as more melodic and riff oriented. The second part of the album will be released in 2012. The album illustrations were created by Stacey Rozich.
