Alunah - Fire of Thornborough Henge

ALUNAHs fourth album "Solennial", was released on 17th March 2017 via Svart Records. "Solennial" was recorded and mixed by Chris Fielding (CONAN) at Skyhammer Studios, England and mastered by Greg Chandler at Priory Recording Studios, England. The album features guest appearances by Charlotte ‘Chipper’ Nicholls (CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX, PORTISHEAD) and Rich Harris (OILY TOYS).

For 10 years Sophie, guitarist David Day, bassist Daniel Burchmore and drummer Jake Mason, since first coming together in the English Midlands in 2006, ALUNAH have trafficked in a blend of the earthly and the unearthly.

Over the course of their three albums – 2010’s "Call of Avernus", 2012’s "White Hoarhound" and 2014’s "Awakening The Forest" – the four-piece have been a constant force of progression into an individualized take on psychedelic and organic heft. Their material has never lacked structure or groove, but with the melodic vocals of guitarist Sophie Day ever at the fore, they keep an eye toward the ethereal as well.

That was never more true than on "Awakening the Forest", which was released by Napalm Records and followed by 2015 CD reissues of the first two albums via PRC Music and a vinyl release for "Call of Avernus" through UK imprint HeviSike Records, with one for "White Hoarhound" still to come in 2016. But even that ending was only a beginning.

Following in the footsteps of Svart alums HEXVESSEL and JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES, ALUNAH arrive at the label preceded by a reputation for blending nature worship and heavy vibes with a grace that few can match, basking in a sun-soaked spirit of beauty and decay, folklore and deeply personal expression. Look for them to expand their sonic palette with the new material and build on what they’ve accomplished before in their rich, engaging sound that seems to be always wandering and never, ever lost.

In November 2017 ALUNAH announced the addition of vocalist Siân Greenaway to their lineup, Greenaway joins ALUNAH after the stunning departure in September of founding vocalist/guitarist Sophie Day, who fronted the band across four full-length releases, the latest of which, Solennial, was issued earlier this year on Svart Records. In conjunction with Day’s leaving, ALUNAH vowed to press on, and with the arrival of Greenaway, they will look to tour in 2018 and begin writing material for their next album.

Draconian - Pale Tortured Blue

Monday, new week, time for a new Record Of The Week!

"Sovran" is the sixth studio album by the Swedish Melodic Goth Metal band DRACONIAN. It's the stunning follow up to 2011’s "A Rose For The Apocalypse". Big changes have occurred in the DRACONIAN camp over the years, the big loss of the angelic and fragile vocals of Lisa Johansson, the worthy replacement Heike Langhans powerful voice steering up the ship with dignity.

"Sovran" is an beautiful creation of dark and slow Doom Goth Metal. The songs are full of melancholy riffing, imposing sorrowful growls by Anders that are emotionally powerful along with Heike’s beautiful voice, a combination that will spellbound you completely and immediately convinces the listener with Beauty and the Beast-esque vocal contrasts, striking accents, and threatening moods. An atmosphere they weave is exquisitely sad and tragic. The album opening "Heavy Lies The Crown" sets the mood and tempo how the album will take it's path during the up coming 67 minutes. The songs are all extremely well-written and performed for maximum emotional impact. "Pale Tortured Blue" is glorious and dark, wonderful piece. The album also features a guest appearance from Daniel Änghede (CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX) on the haunting track “Rivers Between Us”.

Founded in 1994 in the Swedish Säffle, DRACONIAN gradually refined their sound of melodic Death Metal with elements of Black Metal, becoming more ponderous and doomy over time. Their style-defining 2003 debut LP 'Where Lovers Mourn' served a welcome alternative for fans of such classic doom artists like MY DYING BRIDE and PARADISE LOST. Contrary to many of their peers however, DRACONIANs sound has remained steadfast to its origins, in particular, the powerful vocal growls of Anders Jakobsson, one of the band's defining and most unique features, along with newcomer female vocalist Heike Langhans sensitively interwoven melodies. DRACONIANs sixth studio album "Sovran" is no exception to this formula.

Crippled Black Phoenix - Laying Traps

From the United Kingdom we find the Neo-Psychedelia Post-Rockers CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX started in 2004 when the multi-instrumentalist Justin Greaves (formerly the drummer of IRON MONKEY, ELECTRIC WIZARD, TEETH OF LIONS RULE THE DIVINE, THE VARUKERS, etc..) picked up a borrowed guitar and began to make simple demos. 11 years, 7 critically acclaimed albums and quite a few line-up changes later Crippled Black Phoenix is a force to reckoned with.

Several musicians have contributed to CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIXs albums and played with them during their live shows.

They do not fit in to any easily found musical category, instead they blaze their own trail using the influences and knowledge gained over a lifetime of playing and performing.

Todays tune "Laying Traps" is taken from the fifth album (Mankind) The Crafty Ape, released January 30, 2012. The thematic focus for this album is firmly planted in the corruption of mankind and injustice, but also ultimately in the hope that all is not lost, and that there's a common thread connecting people of like-minds wherever you may travel. The music and themes have been created as to represent the world inside and outside of the mind, with no compromise.

On (Mankind) The Crafty Ape the band showcases a new level of focus, and that's not to say there was a lack of focus on previous efforts, it simply says that the methods and attitude in making the new album are another move toward finding the total uncompromised potential within the music.
