Death - Voice Of The Soul

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Voice Of The Soul" is a tune by the American death metal band DEATH. It's taken from the bands seventh and final studio album "The Sound Of Perseverance", released on September 15, 1998, by Nuclear Blast. This is the only album to feature guitarist Shannon Hamm, drummer Richard Christy, and bassist Scott Clendenin.

"Voice Of The Soul" is an instrumental track that contrasts with almost every other work of the band in its inclusion of softer guitars and lack of percussion.

In an interview done in March 1999, Chuck Schuldiner stated that the acoustic guitar-driven "Voice of the Soul" was actually written during the "Symbolic" sessions. DEATH has produced only two instrumentals (the other being the more electric guitar driven "Cosmic Sea" from the album "Human"). The album also featured a cover of JUDAS PRIESTs "Painkiller", which shows Schuldiner attempting a different, high-pitched style of death growl more reminiscent of Rob Halford's original vocals and also singing for the first time with a clean voice through the end of the song. All the solos in the song are rewritten.

Some of the song names and music on "The Sound of Perseverance" was originally going to appear on the first "Control Denied" album, "The Fragile Art of Existence". Schuldiner himself denied this in an interview with Metal Maniacs in 1998 by saying that none of his compositions for "Control Denied" had been used to fill space for a DEATH album. Schuldiner implied that some "Control Denied" songs were used for "The Sound of Perseverance" in an interview with Scream Magazine in October 1999, when he stated that "The Fragile Art of Existence" contains a lot of music I didn't have in mind originally. Most of the material was completed in 1996-97. Also, Tim Aymar, in December 2010, confirmed that a few of the "Control Denied" songs had been, in his words, "'Deathized' and recorded on TSOP." When DEATH was signed on to Nuclear Blast, Schuldiner agreed to make one last DEATH album before moving forward with "Control Denied".

20th Anniversary 3LP Edition, Deluxe limited edition one time pressing of DEATH’s seminal final album, featuring gorgeous expanded packaging and a third LP featuring 10 bonus tracks!

Enjoy today's tune!

Rammstein - Deutschland

The German hard rock band RAMMSTEIN have released a new tune "Deutschland", once again they shock the surroundings with the released a nine-minute video of their new song. It’s the first tune taken from their upcoming self-titled album, due for release in May, and has already racked up 8.9 million views on YouTube at the time of writing.

The video shows the German history (and potential future) of human conflicts from Weimar, Nazi, and communist East Germany. Throughout, they sing about a love-hate relationship with their German identity. You will see the band members dressed as Nazi concentration camp prisoners where they have nooses around their necks as the Holocaust victims were made to wear in the death camps. At least one band member appears to be wearing a yellow Star of David that Jews were forced to wear by the Nazis.

RAMMSTEIN has courted controversy numerous times since the band was started in Berlin in 1995. The band's videos, songs, and album art have depicted necrophilia, sadomasochism, sexual violence, and abuse.

QankHD translated the lyrics to Deutschland into English. Some words don’t accurately translate 100%, but this is pretty close and it’s pretty heavy.

You have cried a lot
In the mind apart
In the heart united
We have been together for a very long time
Your breath is cold
The heart in flames
You
I
Us
You (plural)

Germany
My heart in flames
Want to love you, want to damn you
Germany
Your breath is cold
So young
And yet so old
Germany

I
I never want to leave you
One can love you
And want to hate you
Overbearing
Superior
To take over
To surrender
Surprising
To assault
Germany, Germany over everyone

Germany
My heart in flames
Want to love you, want to damn you

Germany
Your breath is cold
So young
And yet so old
Germany

Germany
Your love is a curse and a blessing
Germany
My love I cannot give to you
Germany

Germany
You
I
Us
You (plural)

Superior
Needless
Übermenschen
Weary
The higher you climb, the farther you fall
Germany, Germany over everyone

Germany
My heart in flames
Want to love you, want to damn you

Germany
Your breath is cold
So young
And yet so old

Germany
Your love is a curse and a blessing
Germany
My love I cannot give to you
Germany

Herod - Fork Tongue

HEROD have arisen from the ever- prosperous Swiss music scene. Throughout their young 4 years of presence, they have already shared the stage with such acts as GOJIRA, CROWBAR, THE OCEAN, CARCASS, OBITUARY, NAPALM DEATH and VOIVOD. Attesting their repute as the bus boy’s of King Herod, serving up whole sides of rare riffs, disposition, beauty and authority.

Initially the brain child of guitarist Pierre Carroz, the first idea of HEROD came to life during his stay in Malmø, Sweden, back in 2006. In Sweden, Pierre found little else to do that to isolate himself in his empty studio apartment, inspired by the cold and desolate Swedish climate and in 2014 saw HERODs debut release "They Were None" via Mighty Music and a subsequent European tour. Following the departure of original vocalist David, former THE OCEAN (Precambrian) vocalist Mike Pilat was recruited for follow up album "Sombre Dessein". Pilat also plays guitar and HEROD are now furnished with a supplementary layer of musicality to complement both heaviness and soundscape aspects of their palette. CARCASS guitar player Bill Steer makes a guest appearance on the track "Fork Tongue", see it below.

"Sombre Dessein" was recorded and mixed by Swiss audiophile Julien Fehlman, mastered by Magnus Lindberg from CULT OF LUNA, “Sombre Dessein” is an album of staggering riffs, intricate yet groovy polyrhythmic patterns and sheer heaviness. The bi-lingual vocal approach adds an unusual but intriguing aspect to the band's delivery of their craft.

„The concept of the album is about the end of our Judaeo-Christian and thermo-industrial civilisation. The artwork and video clip are made up from footage of “Shipbreakers”, people who dismantle huge container ships which end up mooring to die on Indian or Bangladeshi shores“, comments Pierre Carroz. HEROD create a strong musical and visual image of the abysses of the human consumption project, „which turns out to be hell on earth for these people whose every day work involves constantly risking their lives to feed their families“, Carroz says.

"Sombre Dessein" was released February 15, 2019 and the Vinyl version is pressed in Black (Ltd. to 250), Silver-In-Ultraclear / Color-In-Color (Ltd. to 250)

Today's tune "Fork Tongue", enjoy!

Baroness - Borderlines

The Philadelphia-based progressive metal band BARONESS has returned with a tourniquet and a new lead single "Borderlines", taken from the forthcoming album "Gold & Grey", see the tune below.

The new single sounds great, a takeoff from "Purple" (2015). The Video is spacy and trippy, six-minute riff-beast with great soaring harmonized vocals.

Gold & Grey is due June 14 via Baroness' own Abraxan Hymns label and with a stunning cover painting.

"Borderlines" marks the bands first new material since Gleason took over for Pete Adams following his departure in 2017. The new album was recorded in upstate New York with famed FLAMING LIPS prog-fuzz producer Dave Fridmann. (Fridmann also produced the last BARONESS album, 2015’s "Purple".)

BARONESS recently embarked on a massive co-headlining tour with fellow boundary-pushing rockers DEAFHEAVEN.

Saor - Bròn

The Scottish Caledonian Metal SAOR have released a brand new record called “Forgotten Paths” on February 15 via Avantgarde Music.

The band is inspired by heritage, nature/landscapes, sorrow and traditional poetry. Since its formation in 2013, SAOR has continually evolved while remaining boldly faithful to its Scottish heritage. Forged by the vision of the band’s founder Andy Marshall, SAOR (meaning “Free” in Scottish Gaelic) has a uniquely expressive approach that dives deep into lyrical themes based on literature, landscapes, history, sorrow, nature, and the majestic mountains of his homeland.

Expertly transitioning between atmospheric Black Metal, Celtic Folk, and traditional Scottish sounds – the wildly exploratory music of SAOR knows no limitations and seeks out every opportunity to expand on its potential.

For the past two years, SAOR has been writing and recording an all-new set of powerful songs that take the insightful mix of stunning melody and musical intensity in their sound boldly into the next chapter of their career on the highly-anticipated release of the latest record "Forgotten Paths".

Enlisting the talent of Neige from ALCEST to contribute to the new album, along with another ensemble of talented session musicians, "Forgotten Paths" promises to be a genuine experience in music unlike any other, designed to push/pull emotions through thought-provoking and poetic lyricism and sounds that courageously explore the most innocent expressions to the full storm and fury of Saor’s unbridled passion.

Their creation of Caledonian Metal has clearly caught fire with listeners and ignited what was once only a spark of support into a full-blown blaze of burning desire and an authentic craving for the unmatched skill, uniqueness, and imagination in SAORs verifiably epic sound.

Album Cover is made by Atterigner and Layout Art by Anaïs Chareyre.

Today's tune "Bròn", taken from "Forgotten Paths", released 15 Feb on Avantgarde Music, enjoy the brilliant video!

1914 - The Blind Leading The Blind

New week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

1914 was the year that saw the beginning of what became known as World War I, after an heir to the Austrian throne was assassinated by Serbian nationalist Gavrillo Princip. It is also known as the First World War or the Great War, was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. Contemporaneously described as "the war to end all wars", it led to the mobilisation of more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, making it one of the largest wars in history. It is also one of the deadliest conflicts in history, with an estimated nine million combatants and seven million civilian deaths as a direct result of the war, while resulting genocides and the 1918 influenza pandemic caused another 50 to 100 million deaths worldwide.

That warfare is the most consistent topics in the metal world is a fact, there are thousands of bands whose lyrics are all about war in all its forms, but I have never heard a band that lived into this historical madness and executes it as well as 1914. The band's musical style is Blackened Metal, grinding death metal riffs, doomy melodic layout, fluctuate tempos and fermenting death.

1914 is a Ukrainian Blackened Metal, hailing from the Ukrainian city of Lviv, a band that is totally obsessed with the barren World War I, as far as with their second full-length "The Blind Leading The Blind" was released at the 11th hour on November 11th in order to be released at the exact moment of the 100th anniversary (Armistice Day) of the end of the war. Pretty cool indeed, especially if you want to get some headlines and get some attention which they did.

"The Blind Leading The Blind" is a heavy piece of war history and really shocking at the same time. The album is an emotional rollercoaster and if you let the music take you it can be a really uncomfortable journey were you can feel the bullets fly in the air, the bang of bombs makes you almost completely deaf, body feels completely stiff in the cold nights and the skin completely wobbly with the trapped moisture in the hideous trench, you feel the scent of all corpses sink into the mud, you can feel the death everywhere so completely lose reality when you are stuck and have nowhere to go, just raise your head and you will be killed, almost that you will do it to end this misery, it’s just war, trenches, fear, hopelessness and endless death around of you. But you don't have to take it so literally, then this is a really damn good album.

Where death becomes absurd and life absurder.

"War In" is British recruitment propaganda, probably 100 years old that gives us some false data about joining the war opens the album before the first real tune takes place of "Arrival. The Meuse-Argonne" where the band kicks of some heavy musical firepower and extreme artillery, is an eight minutes armoured barn burner. The heavy German tank is moving slowly against the enemy in "AV7 Mephisto", a deadly atmosphere with blasting drums, harsh vocals and furious riffing make this tune a highlight and it's not the only one. Bullets, screams, and death is the intro of "High Wood. 75 Acres Of Hell", an extreme piece of music, blasting madness with a very melodic part in the chorus. The cover on THE EXPLOITEDs "Beat The Bastards" manages to just flow along, a bagpipe opens the tune before it explodes into an inferno to win the fight. The ex-BOLT THROWER vocalist Dave Ingram makes a visit on "Passchenhell", the tune is a real slaughter, raw and unpredicted. The narrating start of "C’est Mon Dernier Pigeon" make you chipping breath or the ten minutes long closer "The Hundred Days Offense" that builds up slowly with an acoustic intro, heart-wrenching monologue clip from "All Quiet On The Western Front" a real highlight of forgiveness, absolutely epic ending. 1914 is tackling the historic subject in a serious way, it's powerful and intelligent riff-machine that found a unique way to conqour our bloodstained history. An album that you should not miss.

Sum: A excellent lesson through the recesses of our bloodstained history, this album is essential in your collection.

Bathory - One Rode To Asa Bay

Sunday, time for a classic!

"One Rode to Asa Bay" is a song by BATHORY about the Christianization of Scandinavia and appears on the 1990 album Hammerheart.

BATHORY were an extreme metal group formed in Vällingby, Sweden, in 1983 named after Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Báthory. The band's frontman and main songwriter was Quorthon (Tomas Forsberg). Considered to be one of the most influential acts in heavy metal, BATHORYs first four albums are considered to be "the blueprint for Scandinavian black metal". The band departed from this style on their fifth album, "Hammerheart" (1990), which is often cited as the first Viking metal album. BATHORY continued in the Viking metal style throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, although the band experimented with thrash metal on the albums "Requiem" (1994) and "Octagon" (1995). BATHORY ended when Quorthon died from heart failure in 2004.

Quorthon dedicated the song to C. Dean Andersson, who had earlier sent some of his books to Quorthon. The village's name in the song, Asa Bay, comes from pseudonym Asa Drake which Andersson used in some of his books.

The music video was filmed in a suburb of Stockholm to complement the story idea of the song. The video contains scenes of the band performing and a back story of settlers bringing a new religion to the land. BATHORY guitarist and vocalist, Quorthon, paid $5,000 to film the music video. Quorthon explained, "I have never seen it and I didn't get to see any of the 60 hours of film we had worked on for several weeks." He elaborated, "the guy who was responsible for the whole filming just went on holiday once the last shot was made and he was unheard from and impossible to reach." After several months later "he eventually did send us something", but it was 18 minutes of the 60 hours that were filmed. Meanwhile, it was assumed "the rest of the material is probably erased" and the final product was to remain the edited video that did not represent Quorthon's song idea. Ultimately, it became the first and last video BATHORY would make. Even so, the video received play of MTV's Headbangers Ball, which got Quorthon interviewed on MTV and introduced the band to American audiences. The video had only been available as a bootleg until 2006, when Black Mark Records released a tribute to Quorthon which contains a DVD with Quorthon footage and the video itself.

Cover versions of the song have been recorded by OPERA IX and MYSTIC CIRCLE.

Enjoy today's tune "One Rode To Asa Bay", the tune is taken from their fifth album, "Hammerheart" (1990)

Kampfar - Ophidian

"Ofidians Manifest" represents KAMPFAR anno 2019. 25 years on from their foundation, only willing to release new music if they felt it would surpass all they had done before, it is a condensation of the immense struggles of the last few years. Everything that has been hidden behind the music and the live performances is laid bare, though told in the only way the band can portray themselves, through songs. It is immensely honest yet wrapped in their own folklore, the snake tongues splitting every truth into two deeper truths, every word sung dominated by the weight of all those sung before. To Ofidian.

KAMPFAR is a black metal band from Fredrikstad, Norway. According to their singer, Dolk, their name is an ancient Norse battle cry which means Odin or Wotan. The music of KAMPFAR can be described as Black Metal inspired by Norwegian folklore and nature. The band is currently signed to Indie Recordings.

Today's tune "Ophidian" taken from the upcoming album "Ofidians Manifest". To be unleashed by Indie Recordings (CD/LP/MC) on May 3rd, 2019.

The madness of Medusa was chosen as a visual clue to the record’s themes, represented by two different paintings to be explored on the physical releases. And again, the band decided to travel to Poland to record a music video, this time with director Dariusz Szermanowicz of Grupa 13. The video, hinting at the many underlying stories of the album, is a chaotic depiction of the road back to equilibrium, a place no one knows yet all walk towards. According to Ask Ty, the choice of song proclaiming the band’s return was made because “it tells you everything you need to know about KAMPFAR today, distilled down to four and a half minutes of intense breaks and turns, it is the beginning and the end and the new beginnings after that, and it is the sound of a band that is alive and well.”

Enjoy!

Numenorean - Regret

The pain of life's journey does not relent. It beats against the soul's shores until the spirit is eroded. The child dies smiling, in the bliss of eternal unknowing. Comfort is found in the abyss. The destination seems bleak, ingrained deep within us. In its depths, we find what we have known all along: 'Home'.

NUMENOREAN unveil their staggering sophomore album "Adore". Three years in the making, the album is a towering work of lustrous metallic art. Its deeply-nuanced tracks weave ferocity and beauty into sweeping pieces that are as haunting as they are cathartic. NUMENOREAN place themselves at the fore of the genre’s evolution with this profoundly moving work of modern, post-black metal brilliance.

Line-up:
Guitar/Vox - Byron Lemley
Vocals - Brandon Lemley
Guitar/Vocals - Roger LeBlanc
Bass – Alex Kot
Drums – David Horrocks

Today's tune "Regret" is taken from the forthcoming album "Adore". Release Date: April 12, 2019

Whitechapel - When A Demon Defiles A Witch

Since their 2007 debut, "The Somatic Defilement", The Knoxville metal titans WHITECHAPELs output has been mired in darkness, but they have never inhabited blacker territory than where we find them on 7th full-length, "The Valley".

The band is named after the WHITECHAPEL district in East London, England, referencing the series of murders committed by Jack the Ripper.

On November 2, 2018 the band announced their seventh studio album "The Valley" will be released on March 29th, 2019 via Metal Blade Records and the first song "Brimstone" was released. It has also been reported Navene Koperweis from Entheos has tracked drums for the upcoming album. The song solidifies a change in their once-deathcore sound to a more melodic metal sound.

On February 20, 2019 the band released a music video for the song "When a Demon Defiles a Witch", see it below.

"The Valley" of the title relates to the part of Hardin Valley, west of Knoxville, Tennessee, where Bozeman grew up. To track this powerful collection, the band once again teamed up with producer Mark Lewis (CANNIBAL CORPSE, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER) whose commitment to creating the best possible record reflects that of the musicians involved and mixed by David Castillo, mastered by Ted Jensen

Gaahls WYRD - From The Spear

Norwegian extreme metal formation GAAHLS WYRD, fronted by renowned vocalist Gaahl (GORGOROTH, WARDRUNA), will release its debut album, "GastiR - Ghosts Invited", on May 31 via Season Of Mist. The album was recorded last year at Solslottet Studios in Norway with Iver Sandøy (ENSLAVED). The word "Gastir" means visitor. The record is shaping up to be a decidedly not-so-black metal affair, though the singles thus far have proven Gaahl is far more talented than relying on his reputation and excellent musicianship.

Gaahl is known as one of Norway's most-talked-about and respected extreme metal musicians. His work with TRELLDOM, GORGOROTH, WARDRUNA and GOD SEED has been widely regarded as some of the best the black metal scene has had to offer.

GAAHLS WYRD conists of:
Vocals - Gaahl (Kristian Espedal) (GORGOROTH, WARDRUNA, GOD SEED),
Guitar - Lust Kilman (Ole Walaunet) (THE BATALLION, GOD SEED, GRIMFIST),
Bass - Eld (Frode Kilvik) (KRAKOW, AETERNUS) and on
Drums - Spektre (Kevin Kvåle) (HORIZON ABLAZE).

GAAHLS WYRD have just finish of the European tour with TRIBULATION, UADA and IDLE HANDS.

Today's tune "From The Spear" is taken from the upcoming album "Gastir – Ghosts Invited" will be released may 31st through Seasons of Mist.

Møl - Jord

New week, time to introduce "The Record Of The Week".

Today, we travel across the strait to Denmark where we find the five-piece band shoegaze/metal band MØL hailing from Aarhus, Denmark and their latest effort "Jord" (Danish for "Soil"). This is a band that combines its multiple influences into a unique blackened shoegaze sound in that has gained my attention. The boundaries of modern Black Metal have been pushed beyond the purists, and MØL is proving themselves as a masterful contribution and deliver the absolute finest Denmark can offer at present.

MØL consists of:
Nicolai - Guitar,
Ken - Drums,
Frederik - Guitar,
Holger - Bass,
Kim Song - Vocals.

"Jord" is a very creative 8 piece album, 40 minutes of atmospheric and dreamy Blackgaze with soaring and drenched guitars and wheezing vocals with a brilliant composition of soundscapes, melodies, and emotions. But despite all the aggression, it is very accessible to listen to. They are inspired by bands like DEAFHEAVEN, LANTLÔS and ALCEST.

With "Jord" it's easy to get lost in its own beauty like the opening cut "Storm", with a picking intro, soft layback guitar until it burst out like a volcano on viagra, heavy riffing, pulsating drumming and wheezing vocals and you are hooked. "Penumbra" were we get a wall of sounds hitting you like a tsunami, slower reflective intermissions were we can get a bit air before it comes again. Or the softer parts like the melancholy "Bruma", shows a half-paced face until you will feel your soul fights with the blackened screams or in the real beauty is "Lambda", close your eyes and let the atmosphere sweep you slowly toward your dreams. In the more aggressive and extreme tunes as "Vakuum", "Ligament", "Virga" and the title track, atmospheric with clever hardened riffs and black metal ferocity with Scandinavian roots flowing in the veins. This is one of those albums, that will leave you totally blown away after the first spin and hey, it's only getting better the next spin. It gives a first love rush, a true beauty.

Sum: Absolutely brilliant blackgaze album, an exploding danish debut record.

Today's tune is the title track from "Jord", the album was released April 13th, 2018, enjoy!

Carcass - Corporal Jigsore Quandary

Sunday, time for a classic!

The British Metal band CARCASS takes us inside an autopsy for this gnarly song. Lead singer Jeff Walker wrote the lyrics, which incorporate many pathology terms: deviscerated, imbrued, chondrin.

Today's tune "Corporal Jigsore Quandary" is taken from the third album "Necroticism – Descanting the Insalubrious". It was released on October 30, 1991, through Earache Records. This album is the first to feature guitarist Michael Amott. Many of the tracks describe economical ways to dispose of dead bodies. "Necroticism" continues the move towards a predominant death metal sound which was started in "Symphonies Of Sickness", featuring songs with longer sections and complex structures more akin to the then-burgeoning technical death metal subgenre.

This focus on the post-mortem is a common theme in Walker's lyrics. He researched the medical terms but says that they are not entirely accurate. Medical students, however, seem to appreciate it. Said Walker: "We've met people who have become doctors or nurses or pathologists or meds as a result of listening to our band, which is really cool. It's really awoken an interest in people, these subjects." (Here's our full Jeff Walker interview.) A track from the third CARCASS album, the lineup was Jeff Walker on bass and lead vocals, Bill Steer and Michael Amott on guitars, and Ken Owen on drums. Walker says that this track came out of their determination to do something different. He explained in our interview:

"With some riffs it's simple: you know where the words are going to fall. It's just a matter of filling in the gaps, the blanks, put them down. With 'Corporal,' even though it's got a kind of chorus riff, there is no real chorus, because the words in there are repeated. That's something that was deliberate back then because my attitude as a 19 or 20-year-old was that chorus of being lazy - just repeating the same thing. That just illustrates how awkward we were when we were young. In fact, we were fighting against just being obvious."

Enjoy Today's tune!

Sumac - The Task

Bass interlace and mangle sounds in a sonic homage to both the innate warmth of human magnetism and the cold realities of corrupted love—jealousy, obsession, perversion, addiction. That is what describes the American/Canadian post-metal band SUMAC.

The band was formed in 2014. It features the Vancouver, British Columbia-based Nick Yacyshyn (BAPTISTS), Brooklyn, NYC-based Brian Cook (RUSSIAN CIRCLES, ex-THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES, ex-BOTCH) and Vashon, Washington-based Aaron Turner (MAMIFFER, OLD MAN GLOOM, ex-ISIS). SUMAC released its debut album The Deal through Profound Lore Records in 2015.

Love is what makes us human. It guides our decisions, shapes our worldview, and defines our experiences. Its absence equates to tragedy while its presence gives our lives meaning. Love has been well-worn theme throughout a lot of rock music, but most commonly in terms of love-lost, overly romanticized versions of new love, or as a veil for sexual conquest,” says SUMAC guitarist and vocalist Aaron Turner (OLD MAN GLOOM, MAMIFFER, ISIS). “It is rarely addressed in its more spiritual and vulnerable aspects.” Those less-traversed territories of humankind’s connective bond became the central theme SUMAC’s third full-length album, "Love In Shadow"

Today's tune "The Task" gives us a meticulous bombardment of heavy riffage and dexterous drumming. The tune is taken from the third studio album "Love In Shadow". It was released on September 21, 2018 through Thrill Jockey. Like the band's experimental collaboration with Keiji Haino earlier in 2018, much of the album was recorded improvisationally.

Sumac performing the first 6+ minutes of the 21-minute new song "The Task" live on September 12, 2018, at Strange Matter in Richmond, VA. Enjoy!
