Kryptograf - The Eldorado Spell

It's the Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday and a public holiday in some countries. It is the second day of Eastertide. In Western Christianity, it is also the second day of the Octave of Easter, and in Eastern Christianity, it is also the second day of Bright Week.

But still it's Monday so it time to introduce "Record Of The Week". "The Eldorado Spell" is the second album release by the Norwegian four-piece KRYPTOGRAF.

This four old souls is inspired by the heavy sound of the late 60's, and they will hex you with their collective vocals, destructive riffs and inventive songwriting. "The Eldorado Spell" is a beauty by it self, where the sound is very 60's inspired with a foot in the psychedelic folk rock and riff heavy doom, nothing orginal at all, but the love for the past and creative minds is what makes them so good. Somehow I just adore when the Scandinavians makes music like this, the joy in thier craftmanship shines true the production and that is something which can be heard immediately from the opening "Asphodel", a marvelous rocker with heavy riffing and amazing vocals, especially the chorus. "Cosmic Suicide" the next tune in line keep the up the quality and deliver a great pace with some cool echos and a great solo. The pace slows down a notch in the more doomier piece "Lucifer’s Hand" while in the groovy "Creeping Willow" the pace is restore a bit and serves us with some cleaver riffing and melody along with a nice jam in the middle. A short folkish interlude of "Across The Creek" paves the way for the title tune "The Eldorado Spell", with a light marching tempo it moves forward determined and cohesive until it fades away and opens the door for the more doomiah and slowly "The Spiral", and after it reaches it's half mark it switches and pushes down the gas for a wile until it falls back in the end. "When The Witches" is an odd one, acid drenched piece that takes out the swing. "Wormwood" is another folkish interlude that makes the way for the final tune "The Wall" that rounds off this work in a really nice way.

Sum: "The Eldorado Spell" is the psychedelic doom buzz you need right now, check this up!

Monica Heldal - Ravensdale

Monday, time to introduce the first "Record Of The Week" for 2022.

We start the year abit softish and present "Ravensdale", the third album from the Norwegian singer-songwriter Monica Heldal.

Monica Heldal is back with her first album following five years of silence. The 30 year old musician released her Norwegian Grammy winning debut album in 2013, while its follow-up made the Top 3 of the album chart in her home territory. She subsequently toured with Ben Howard in Europe and John Butler Trio in the USA, while her music has been streamed 40 million times on Spotify.

Monica Heldal (born 24 January 1991 in Bergen, Norway) is a Norwegian musician (vocals, guitar) and songwriter. Her debut studio album, Boy From the North, was released on 4 November 2013. For the album she received two awards during Spellemannprisen in 2013: Rookie of the Year and Best Pop Solo Artist. She also won the Bendiksenprisen in 2013 and was nominated for the Statoil Scholarship that same year.

When Monica Heldal released her second album "The One In The Sun" and was ready for the tour, she was knocked out by tinnitus and sound sensitivity. "I was extremely hypersensitive to sound in the time right after. It went very hard on my psyche. I isolated myself for fear of being exposed to noise. The sound of a car driving past could be pure suffering, she told VG in July 2016".

Now five years later the hearing is better and a new album is out.

"Ravensdale" is a soft guitar driven album full of sparkling, shimmering, alternately low-key and expansive, ever-captivating musical carousel that moves best at a speed of 33 1/3 revs per minute. Her voice is like balm for the soul, a wonderful start to this hopeful year. Sit comfortably, lean back, close your hands, let your eyelids fall down and enjoy the nice sweet melodies. You feel the appropriations on the strings before the tone is taken, you hear the hands in the air before they land on the drum skins, you hear when Monica opens her lips before the first words slip out like a silk shawl in the wind. Wonderful, just wonderful. Together, Monica, multi-instumentalist Cato “Salsa” Thomassen and drummer Kenneth Kapstad (MOTORPSYCHO/GÅTE) conjure up intermittently ornate soundscapes, rich with tones and percussive details, where guitars and tunings of all kinds float round like planets in melodic, musical orbit.

Today's tune "Wallowa Lake", taken from the album "Ravensdale", enjoy!

Kryptograf - Kryptograf

Monday, a new week and it's time for "Record Of The Week".

Today we look over our shoulder and see the new Norweigan four-piece rockband KRYPTOGRAF that has released their self-titled debut. A band that hails from Bergen Norway and plays rock music that has past it's "before" date long ago. They are heavily influenced by bands like BLACK SABBATH, PENTAGRAM, and even the more modern Scandinavian bands like WITCHCRAFT, HELLACOPTERS, and MOTORPSYCHO. A mix of this creates the sound and style of KRYPTOGRAF.

The self-titled album has a great playtime of thirty-eight minutes, divided into eight tunes. The album opens up with the first single "The Veil" a cool guitar play until the band joins the club and the tune kick on. The vocal is pretty clear and pleasant, partly reminds me of Nicke Andersson (HELLACOPTERS, IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC). The melody is catchy with a great riffing and a sing-along chorus, it's really getting your feet tapping along. "Omen" has a more old school doomish approach where both SABBATH and PENTAGRAM floating in the creation. "Seven" is a jammy piece that climbs over the nine minutes mark. "Crimson Horizon" is the second single that opens up with an intro of electronic vibrations until burst out into full bloom, to a catchy and very melodic rocker, a great swing that sticks like glue in the forehead. A bluesy solo adds some spice to the heavy riffage. "Sleeper" is a half paced thingie and "Ocean" is an acoustic strummer with an atmospheric feel and duel vocals. "New Colossus" opens up for heavy riffage in a half paced speed, feels a bit mossy but still it works. The album closes up with "Infinite", an instrumental shorty. The album is a pleasant piece of music where the old souls in KRYPTOGRAF will hex you with their collective vocals, destructive riffs, and inventive songwriting will give you a great musical summer.

Sum: A great Colossus for the summer, aim for the "Crimson Horizon" with KRYPTOGRAF.

Vulture Industries - Deeper

The Norweigan oddballs VULTURE INDUSTRIES is an excellent band to continue the little far-out choice we had yesterday.

A band that plays a surrealist brand of dark metal cabaret, heavy rock vistas bent and twisted into living entities embodying the width and breadth of human emotion.

The single "Deeper" 7″ features the new VULTURE INDUSTRIES single paired up with a live recording of "The Benevolent Pawn" from the venerable concert venue USF in Bergen. This exclusive single, released for the Strange Rain Tour, is strictly limited to 500 copies on green Danish vinyl, released via Dark Essence Records. The tune has a spaghetti western vibe of Ennio Morricone and with a touch of Nick Cave. "Deeper" tells the story of man's insatiable greed for more, as symbolized by the miners digging all the way to Hell.

The front man Bjørnar says this about the formation of the track:

“It was one of those scorching summer days of 2018. The grass in the fields had all turned the colour of old paper, and the sun, at its zenith, was mercilessly searing our skin. Thirsty, hungry, and with tongues swelling, we had just missed the ferry crossing and could taste our hopes turn to ashes in our mouths. Trying to remain calm, but steadily feeling the building pressure of desperation, as a boiler ready to blow, we waited in line. Then suddenly the one year old in the back seat broke the silence chanting AHUM, AHUM, AHUM, AHUM! Overcome by what felt like divine inspiration but might very well have been sent from the depths of Hell, I started drumming on the dashboard. DUM, DADADUM, DADADUM, DADADUMDADUMDADUM.”

Members:
Bjørnar Erevik Nilsen – vocals and keys
Eivind Huse – guitars and vocals
Øyvind Madsen – guitars
Kyrre Teigen – bass and vocals
Tor Helge Gjengedal – drums

Today's tune "Deeper", is taken from the 7" single, released April 23, 2019.

Solstorm - Eklips

From the weatherbitten west coast of Norway comes a sound so alarming, dismal and alien, you'd be forgiven for thinking the world had gone under.

SOLSTORM (solar storm) is the mindwork of Ognoise, a noise talent from Kopervik on the westcoast of Norway. Emigrating to Bergen with Jaran Hereid and Camilo Beltran from deathmetal act GOLIATHON, they formed the line-up of SOLSTORM together with Helge Taksdal and drummer Mads Lilletvedt (HELLISH OUTCAST, BYFROST). Concentrating mainly on apocalyptic themes, creating the sound of armageddon and the inevitable end of all things SOLSTORM combine noise with doom and anti-euphoric stoner metal.

SOLSTORM combine riffs sharp as nails, beats heavy as a mammoth and a genuine feeling of sheer hopelessness, resulting in one of the most poignant and captivating doom releases in years. Think NEUROSIS and CULT OF LUNA at their heaviest for some kind of reference, but rest assured SOLSTORM scorch their very own hole in the atmosphere.

SOLSTORM released their first full-length in march 2011 through Duplicate Records and the 2nd album "II" was released by Apollon Records in October 4, 2019. "II" was recorded at Taakeheimen Lydrike, Oslo, and Consternation Recording, Bergen. Mixed by Helge Taksdal at Taakeheimen Lydrike, Oslo. Mastered by James Plotkin, New York. Coverdesign by Kristoffer Lundberg.

The band:

Jaran Hereid - Bass, Vocals
Bjørn Ognøy - Guitar, Lapsteel
Camilo Beltran - Guitar
Roland Røtne - Guitar
Espen Lund - Trumpet
Jonas Hamre - Saxophone
Sten Ove Toft - Noise, Electronics
Andreas Johansen - Drums, samples
Mads Lilletvedt - Drums

Today's tune "Eklips" taken from the album "II", the video clip is filmed live at Det Akademiske Kvarter, Bergen, Norway, October 11th 2019.

Gaahls WYRD - From The Spear

Norwegian extreme metal formation GAAHLS WYRD, fronted by renowned vocalist Gaahl (GORGOROTH, WARDRUNA), will release its debut album, "GastiR - Ghosts Invited", on May 31 via Season Of Mist. Gaahl is known as one of Norway's most-talked-about and respected extreme metal musicians. His work with TRELLDOM, GORGOROTH, WARDRUNA and GOD SEED has been widely regarded as some of the best the black metal scene has had to offer.
