Mavis Staples - Change

For over six decades, Mavis Staples has spoken out against injustices with her music and activism. Both as a solo artist and a member of the legendary THE STAPLE SINGERS, Staples has made countless contributions to the canon of socially conscious music.

Still going strong at 82 years of age, she released the album, “Live in London,” on February 8, 2019. A follow-up, “We Get By,” on May 24, 2019 were we pick today's tune "Change" from, the album’s lead single is a bluesy call to action which highlights issues such as inequality and gun violence (“Fingers on the trigger around here/ Bullets flying, mothers crying / We gotta change around here”).

Mavis Staples is an important artist whose music bridges the gap between the past and present. She continues to pave the way for current and future generations of socially conscious musicians.

During the album release she released a statement, Staples said, "These songs are delivering such a strong message. We truly need to make a change if we want this world to be better."

The album's cover features the photograph "Outside Looking In" by Gordon Parks from his 1956 photo essay The Restraints: Open and Hidden.

Today's tune "Change", taken from "We Get By", the fourteenth studio album by American R&B, soul and gospel singer Mavis Staples. The clip is a live performance "Live from Here with Chris Thile" October 26, 2019, enjoy!

Night Beats - Outlaw R&B

New week, time for the first "Record Of The Week" after the short review holiday. NIGHT BEATS, the Texas-born brainchild of Danny Lee Blackwell, did release their fifth full-length album "Outlaw R&B" on June 4th, 2021 via Fuzz Club. Made during the height of the California wildfires (where Danny now resides), rioting in the streets, and a nation in lockdown, "Outlaw R&B" deals in psychedelic and R&B-infused garage-rock and raucous technicolor rock’n’roll sound that’s “bathed in post-apocalyptic bliss”.

The album arrives following the 2019 and fourth "Myth Of A Man" LP (produced by Dan Auerbach of THE BLACK KEYS and released by Heavenly Recordings) as well as last year’s ‘That’s All You Got’ 7”. The other album now behind them are their self-titled 2011 debut, 2013’s "Sonic Bloom" and 2016’s "Who Sold My Generation".

NIGHT BEATS have garnered a reputation as one of the finest purveyors of contemporary rock’n’roll hedonism around.

"Outlaw R&B" is a marvelous album that gives a little of everything, picks with clean fingernails from psych-rock, garage, outlaw country, R&B, and blues-rock and it's hard to stop listening to it. His vocals are very hypnotic and the rhythms he creates are like a psychedelic drug. It’s a gorgeous batch of tunes that perfectly balances on the line without getting cheezy or over-made. An album that is riotous, acid-fried rock’n’roll to lose your head to and leave this world for almost 40 mins and eleven guitar-heavy tunes, each wearing magic and spellbinding hooks. "Outlaw R&B" is made with a big heart and a happy soul!

Sum: "Outlaw R&B" is an acid-fried rock’n’roll to lose your head to, highly recommended!

Today's tune "New Day" is taken from "Outlaw R&B", enjoy!

Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster

Sunday, time for a classic.

Dark, starting to get cold, day dreaming about the summer and July. Today's tune will bring you back a few months.

"Master Blaster (Jammin')" is a 1980 single by American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder from his 1980 album "Hotter Than July".

The song, built on a heavy reggae feel, is an ode to reggae legend Bob Marley; Wonder had been performing live with Marley (billing him as an opening act) on his US tour in the fall of that year. Lyrics mention "children of Jah", "Marley's Hot on the box" and the end of the civil war in Zimbabwe.

Enjoy today's tune that was the leading single from Wonder's "Hotter Than July" album. It was a major hit, spending seven weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B singles chart, reaching number five on Billboard's pop singles chart in the fall of 1980 and peaking at number two on the UK Singles chart and number one in New Zealand.

Fantastic Negrito - An Honest Man

Fantastic Negrito is the incarnation of a musician who is reborn after going through a lot of awful shit. In fact, the name Fantastic Negrito represents his third rebirth, literally coming back from death this time. The narrative on this man is as important as the sound, because the narrative is the sound. Songs born from a long hard life channeled through black roots music. Slide guitar, drums, piano. Urgent, desperate, edgy.

Fantastic Negrito is the story of a man who struggled to “make it”, who “got it”, and who lost it all. For anyone who ever felt like it was over yet hoped it wasn’t, this is your music; blues harnessed, forged in realness. For anyone who ever considered getting their old high-school band back together, this is your inspiration. These are singular songs by a true musician who writes and produces. They are his fuel as he embarks on the third comeback of his life.

Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz (born 1968), better known by his stage name Fantastic Negrito, is an African-American singer-songwriter whose music has spanned blues, R&B, and roots music.

Fantastic Negrito plays at Pustervik (Stay Out West) on Saturday

Today's tune "An Honest Man" is taken from the self titled EP, enjoy!

Charles Bradley - Changes

Changes is the third album released by American funk/soul singer Charles Bradley, released on 1 April 2016 on Daptone Records. The title track on the album is a cover of the BLACK SABBATH song of the same name and was first released as a Record Store Day Black Friday single in 2013.

Charles Bradley (born November 5, 1948) is an American funk/soul/R&B singer, signed to the Daptone Records label under the Dunham Records division. His performances and recording style are consistent with Daptone's revivalist approach, celebrating the feel of funk and soul music from the 1960s and 1970s.

Bradley's vocal style, describing him as "the closest living equivalent to Brown" and concluding that "Bradley sings of his aches and pleasures with such conviction that he makes one believe this is possible".

He is the subject of a documentary, Soul of America, that premiered at South by Southwest in 2012. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in October 2016 :( FUCK CANCER!!

Today's tune "Changes", is taken from Charles Bradley's latest album, enjoy the tune. Get well Charles!

OMI - Cheerleader

Today is a great day, because it is one of my daughter's birthday.

Hey, this is your last single-digit birthday. You are getting so grown up — not only in age, but also in the way you act. I'm so proud of you. Happy 9th birthday!

This also means that she is the household's boss during her birthday, she decides to to a certain extent on what is to happen. Some things are already pre-ordered for this day, such as breakfast in bed, dinner will be her absolute top one and of course she should be allowed to choose a favourite song too. So today's tune is "Ronja's" favourite at the moment!

Insightful Jamaican artist OMI (Omar Samuel Pasley) is bringing his breakthrough story to the U.S., with the compelling sheen of “Cheerleader,” leading the way. The smash dance song has notched more than 90 million Spotify streams, topping iTunes in 14 territories, including Germany, Australia, Sweden and others (Top 10 in nearly 30 other markets). Released in 2012, a cleverly understated remix by German DJ/Producer Felix Jaehn helped power the global momentum building around the infectious track.

“Cheerleader” originally took off in Hawaii, but Omi was getting a larger sense of the song’s ‘stickiness’ where ever he performed it live. “People just gravitated to it, always remarking how it was their favorite.” Felix Jaehn’s 2014 remix added to the combustible nature of the track,” but by deftly imbuing acoustic gestures into the mix – conga, piano, trumpet – embellishing its unornamented feel. “I loved the mix even before it took off,” says Omi. “So calm; And unusual for a remix, it made you want to listen to the words, too.”

Today's tune "Cheerleader" (Felix Jaehn Remix) with OMI. Happy Birthday Ronja, Love U!

Alicia Keys - Girl on Fire

With a stonking 11 Grammys to her name and over a decade of hits we know that Alicia Keys is going to give a breathtakingly memorable performance at Slottsskogen this summer, and of course she did, she really charmed the audience with her hypnotic honesty and silky voice.

Most recently, her 5th studio album, “Girl on Fire,” topped the iTunes chart in over 20 countries worldwide last year and included collaborations with Frank Ocean, Emile Sande and Jamie XX to name but a few. It is her Keys’ unique mix of jazz, soul and hip-hop and sincere performances that have enamoured and captivated audiences all over the world.

Todays tune "Girl on Fire" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Alicia Keys for her 2012 fifth studio album of the same name. It was written and produced by Keys, Jeff Bhasker, and Salaam Remi. The song is an R&B and hip hop ballad. American rock guitarist Billy Squier also earns a writing credit on the song for the inclusion of drums taken from his 1980 song "The Big Beat". Released on September 4, 2012, as the lead single from the album of the same name, "Girl on Fire".

"Girl on Fire" was inspired by Keys' giving birth to her son Egypt and marriage to husband Swizz Beatz. Keys recorded a three-track suite for the song, consisting of the main version in addition to two remixes. The first remix, titled "Inferno", adds two new verses from Trinidadian hip hop artist Nicki Minaj, whilst the second mix titled "Bluelight" strips back the drums and piano leaving a sparse bass-led production and re-recorded "smokey" vocals. "Girl on Fire" opened to extremely positive reviews from critics, with many praising Keys' vocals and the song's production. Keys performed "Girl on Fire" for the first time at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards on September 6, 2012, where she was joined by Minaj and American gymnastics gold-medalist Gabby Douglas.
