Dool - Love Like Blood

If there was one European rock band that raised more than a few eyebrows in the last two years, it is DOOL. The Dutch found their debut album "Here Now, There Then" in many "best of 2017" lists and reader polls, got it as Record Of The Week on July 2017, read it here! They have constantly touring the continent, playing every festival from Roadburn to Wacken, House Of The Holy to Graspop.

The "Love Like Blood" EP will shorten the wait for their second album with a cover of the eponymous KILLING JOKE classic and as well as live versions of "She Goat" and "In Her Darkest Hour" from Rock Hard Festival capturing DOOL's unbridled live power.

Singer/guitarist Ryanne van Dorst comments on the choice of the EP's lead track: "Apart from being a massive hit during our childhood years that was weaved into the very structure of our musical beings, "Love Like Blood" remains a gem to revisit over and over. And so we did on our first tour as a band, listening to it in the van, and started wondering what it would sound like without its signature staccato beat. Back home, we took the plunge and dived deep into its dreamy waters. After a few rehearsals, we started playing our version live and grew to it the more often we did. By now, it almost doesn't feel like a cover song anymore, so we decided to record and share it with you. Here's our tribute to one of the best songs ever written."

Featuring members of critically-acclaimed dark rock band THE DEVILS BLOOD and death rock group GOLD, DOOL is an explosive, unbridled force. The Dutch band radiates an undeniable raw energy that blends classic hard rock, gothic pop and psychedelic metal to create their own dynamic sound. Audibly influenced by bands such as SISTERS OF MERCY and SONIC YOUTH, DOOL bends these sounds to fit its own vision, giving birth to an ominous new entity. Led by striking singer Ryanne van Dorst (ELLE BANDITA) alongside guitarists Nick Polak (GOLD) and Reinier Vermeulen (THE NEW MEDIA), bassist Job van de Zande (THE DEVILS BLOOD, MALKOVICH) and drummer Micha Haring (THE DEVILS BLOOD, THE HANDS), DOOL has become a hotly-tipped underground buzz band on the strength of its captivating debut single, "Oweynagat" and a red hot live performance at this year’s Roadburn Festival, where the group exceeded expectations as the respected fest’s 2016 'Roadburn Introduces…' artist.

"Love Like Blood" was released May 17, 2019.

Nirvana - Come As You Are

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Come as You Are" is a song by American grunge band NIRVANA, written by frontman Kurt Cobain and released as the second single from the band's second studio album "Nevermind" in March 1992.

Tomorrow it's Kurt's 50 yrs birthday, so Happy Birthday Kurt.

The unexpected success of the album's lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" drew NIRVANA to mainstream success, with "Nevermind" being released two weeks after the single's release. Following the album's release, the band and its management company debated whether to release "Come as You Are" or "In Bloom" as the next single from the album due to Cobain's concerns over similarity of the former with the KILLING JOKE song "Eighties" (1984). After some persuasion by the management company, Cobain agreed to release "Come as You Are" as the second single because of its commercial potential. KILLING JOKE were upset over the song, and there were rumors that a lawsuit had been filed over the song, though the suit never materialized. KILLING JOKE guitarist Geordie Walker was said to be upset about the whole situation, and he felt that NIRVANA (which according to Walker denied the connection between the songs) handled the matter poorly.

The music video for "Come as You Are" was directed by Kevin Kerslake, who drew inspiration for it from the cover artwork of Nevermind. Rolling Stone ranked "Come as You Are" 445th on its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and it placed 452nd on the 2010 edition of the list.

Kurt Cobain described this song as "About people, and what they're expected to act like."

The lyrics are intentionally contradictory and confusing, with one line rebutting the next:

"As a friend, as an old enemy"
"Take your time, hurry up"

In this song, Cobain sings over and over, "I don't have a gun." Less than three years after the song was released, he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. This was an eerie turn of events, but it's unlikely that Cobain had suicide on his mind when he wrote the lyrics. The gun could be a reference to a time when Cobain's mother got mad at her husband (Kurt's stepfather) and threw his guns in a river. Cobain says he recovered some of them, sold them, and used the money to buy his first guitar when he was 15.

In 2005, a sign was put up in Aberdeen, Washington, Cobain's hometown, that reads "Welcome to Aberdeen: Come As You Are" as a tribute to Cobain. The sign was paid for and created by the Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee, a non-profit organization created in May 2004 to honor Cobain. Founded by author Jeff Burlingame and Aberdeen City Councilman Paul Fritts, the Committee also plans to create a Kurt Cobain Memorial Park and a youth center in Aberdeen.

Prong - Goofy’s Concern

Monday, New week and you guys know the drill by now, it's time to introduce this week's "Record Of The Week"

"Songs From The Blackhole" the latest release from the American metal band PRONG. It's a new album full of undeniable cover versions originally recorded by artists such as BLACK FLAG, BAD BRAING; ADOLESCENTS, THE SISTERS OF MERCY, KILLING JOKE, HüSKER Dü and NEIL YOUNG.

At first I thought, a cover album, do they lack of ideas to create something new??? Well since they released the ninth studio album "Ruining Lives" last year they must have something to offer to their fans.

"Songs From The Blackhole" is an eclectic batch of covers, masterfully recorded by Prong. The album contains 10 tracks that have a pretty wide span of tunes that have influence the band during their years. After a few spins on the record I must say that this is a really fun album, they interpret the songs in an excellent manner and adds their own PRONG mark on the songs. That most cover album are pretty obvious, or that the songs choices are more to please than to satisfy their own choices. It feels like they really have chosen the tune them selfs without been influenced by external factors which I like a lot, maybe I'm wrong, but this what I feel when I listen to "Songs From The Blackhole". It's a great cover album with excellent crossover by PRONG. Give it a spin and tell me what you like, start with listen to today's tune!

To sum this up:

"Songs From The Blackhole" is a excellent and entertaining cover album and will be a perfect party record or a excellent finger drumming on the steering wheel in your car.

PRONG is an American metal band formed in 1986. PRONG had two independent releases, Primitive Origins and Force Fed. The albums attracted the attention of Epic Records, who signed the trio in 1989. The group disbanded in 1997 after the Rude Awakening tour, but re-formed in 2002. To date, they have released nine studio albums, one live album, one cover album, four EPs, one DVD and one remix album. A pioneer of the urban metal scene, Prong is fronted by Tommy Victor. Korn's Jonathan Davis, Demon Hunter's Ryan Clark, and NINE INCE NAILS Trent Reznor all cite PRONG as an influence to their musical style.
