Cancer Bats - True Zero

The Canadian hardcore punkers CANCER BATS have released their fifth studio album "Searching For Zero" a week ago (March 10th).

The band is composed of vocalist Liam Cormier, guitarist Scott Middleton, drummer Mike Peters and bassist Jaye R. Schwarzer. Cancer Bats take a wide variety of influences from heavy metal subgenres and fuse them into hardcore punk and punk rock and include elements of sludge metal and southern rock. Their sound has also been compared to metalcore bands such as CONVERGE and HATEBREED. The members of CANCER BATS have also toured and recorded as a BLACK SABBATH cover band under the name BAT SABBATH.

The album includes today's tune "True Zero", for which the Jim Agapito-directed video can be seen below, a tune that will shake any leg that are freezed to the chair.

The iTunes version of the album will include two exclusive tracks titled "Kill Me Please…" and "Rust and Bone".

Produced by Ross Robinson (AT THE DRIVE-IN, SLIPKNOT, THE CURE, SEPULTURA, GLASSJAW), "Searching For Zero" is simultaneously the most melodic, yet menacing CANCER BATS release. The record incorporates the crude hardcore punk of their 2006 debut, "Birthing The Giant", and more metal leanings of 2008's "Hail Destroyer", while pushing the heavy hybrid sounds of 2010's "Mayors Bears Scraps And Bones" and 2012's darker "Dead Set On Living" to a new plateau. The choruses are hookier, the screams more savage, the riffs more vicious, the songs more powerful. That the album is inspired by their metal idols BLACK SABBATH can be heard in the melodic elements, both musically and vocally.

Current members:

Liam Cormier – lead vocals (2004–present)
Scott Middleton – lead guitar, backing vocals (2004–present)
Mike Peters – drums, percussion (2005–present)
Jaye R. Schwarzer – bass, backing vocals (2007–present)

Todays tune "True Zero" is taken from the latest release "Searching For Zero", enjoy!

Kvelertak - Kvelertak

A new week and it's time to present this weeks "Record Of The Week".

The six-piece punkrock band from Stavanger, Norway with the cool name "Kvelertak" The band formed in 2007. The group comprises vocalist Erlend Hjelvik, guitarists Vidar Landa, Bjarte Lund Rolland and Maciek Ofstad, bassist Marvin Nygaard and drummer Kjetil Gjermundrød. A band that is really frequented on this blog. Both the videos and live concerts where I have had the opportunity to photograph live, unfortunately, it was no such thing at the last visit.

This weeks "Record Of The Week" is the second album and latest with Kvelertak that goes under the name "Meir" (Norwegian for "more"), was released in March 2013. It was recorded at GodCity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts, United States and produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge, the cover artwork was created by John Dyer Baizley of the band Baroness. The band released music videos for "Bruane Brenn" and "Månelyst" and the self-titled song "Kvelertak".

"Meir" has a bouncy punk kinda vibe and the album compares ok with the previous one. It filled of very traditional basic song structures and catchy rhythms, more accessible and it's fun and energetic. It's hard to compete with their previous, considering how much I liked their self-titled album. But the "Meir" has a really high class and grows certainly over time. Riffs in the tunes "Spring Fra Livet", "Åpenbaring, "Evig Vandrar," and "Månelyst" among others are sure to keep the listener in the mood and maybe invites you to dance.

I definitely look forward to see what this band will come up with in the future and it will be incredibly exciting when the time comes to record number 3. One thing is for sure, if you like this band on record, you must experience this band LIVE! It's an energy boost like no other!

Todays tune is the final track, entitled, yes, "Kvelertak" which is a timeless beer-hoister. Enjoy! The video for the single are directed by Stian Andersen, edited by Erik Treimann. Filmed in March/April 2013 in London, Paris, Cologne and Oslo.

Monster Truck - Seven Seas Blues

Today we travel a bit north and stops in Canada were we find a Blues Rock Band "Monster Truck" from Hamilton. The band plays a tonal hybrid of the excitement of 70's rock melded with the best elements of what the 90's had to offer. Which could summarize the diesel-smelling classic rock riffs and powerful vocals.

The band was formed in 2009 by Jon Harvey (Bass & Lead vocals), Jeremy Widerman (Guitar & Vocals), Brandon Bliss (Organ & Vocals) and Steve Kiely (Drums & Vocals) as somewhat of a side-project for their other more serious bands (The Reason, Saint Alvia). Quickly the original plan of getting wasted and playing sloppy rock got twisted into something new entirely. Everyone's influences gelled in a cohesive and exciting new take on all of the classic rock that had come before them. Quickly show offers piled up as well as festival slots and the band realized that they had something that was undeniably fun and exciting on their hands.

Two EP's have been released since the band's inception. The first self-titled EP was recorded by Gus Van Go & Werner F (The Stills, Preistess, Hollerado) and was received with open arms and ears by eager fans in August of 2010. Eager to follow up the recording the band hit the studio and tracked “The Brown EP” with Eric Ratz (Billy Talent, Cancer Bats, Three Days Grace). The four songs it contains not only shows a firm grasp of the classic roots that enabled this group but also their ability to add in flavours of grunge and punk era greats they loved so dearly.

Today's music is actually based on a tip from a good colleague "Jojje" which actually share the taste in music with me, which is fun when you can juggle bands between each other.

Todays tune "Seven Seas Blues" is taken from their second ep “The Brown EP”.

The band is also so nice that they gives away the EP, download it here. Support the band with buying a t-shirt or a CD.
