Gorgoroth - Profetens Apenbaring

I'm back, after little over two weeks up in the north, the serenity, birds chirping, angry mosquitoes, barbecues, saunas, and the occasional moose really do wonders for the soul.

Also got the chance to meet a lot of childhood friends, as well as my best friend "Peter" who I have hung out with since my first pubic hair grew. Absolutely wonderful and super nice because it happens so rarely.

Back in Stockholm and here some things happen even if it is a bit sparse considering what surrounds us right now. The annual "Stockholm Cruise" takes place in the city, where classic cars drive around in circles and people drink beer and have a cozy time, it would have been nice if you had a nice car to glide around in, but I don't, spend everything on records, haha. At the same time, we have "Stockholm Pride" this week, most of the happenings are in the digital format, but some meet out at "Gärdet" for some socialization.

So I thought we play something that suits in for both events "but with a twist".

So why not The Norwegian black metal band GORGOROTH, a band based in Bergen and was formed in 1992 by guitarist Infernus, who is also the only original member remaining, and the band has since released nine studio albums. GORGOROTH is a Satanic band and has drawn controversy due to some of their concerts, which have featured impaled sheep heads and mock crucifixions. The band is named after the dead plateau of darkness in the land of Mordor from J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings. Now you are probably wondering, how did he think here??, this is neither "Pride" music nor "Cruise", well it works great to drive to and the common thread to "Pride" is of course Gaahl who is openly gay. Although it is a bit far-fetched, that's me who thinks in an odd way only.

Today's tune "Profetens Apenbaring" is taken from the third studio album "Under The Sign Of Hell". Recorded in 1996 and released in 1997, it was the first album to feature Ares on bass (on one track) and the only one to feature Grim on drums. GORGOROTH re-recorded the album as "Under The Sign Of Hell 2011", released in November 2011 by Regain Records. This re-recorded version was the last album with vocalist Pest.

Today's clip is filmed Live Black Mass Krakow 2004, The concert featured sheep heads on stakes, "crucified" nude models, Satanic symbols, and eighty liters of sheep blood. The band came under fire for violating Polish anti-blasphemy laws as well as Polish animal rights laws. A police investigation took place with allegations of religious offense (which is prosecutable under Polish law) and cruelty to animals. Though these charges were considered, the band was not charged as it was ruled that they were unaware of the fact that what they were doing was illegal, although the concert organizer was eventually fined 10,000zł in 2007, as he knew about it and neither informed the band that it was against the law nor intervened. The whole controversy led to the band being dropped from the roster of the Nuclear Blast Tour and the footage of the concert being confiscated by the police. Enjoy!

Darkthrone - The Hardship Of The Scots

The Pioneering Norwegian black metallers, DARKTHRONE have released the first tune "The Hardship Of The Scots" off their forthcoming album, "Old Star". The tune is a classic heavy metal tune channeling 80's heavy metal where bands of CELTIC FROST and EXODUS comes in mind.

Over the course of 30 years, DARKTHRONE has become a staple of the global Black Metal genre, forging a legacy as one of the most influential bands in its illustrious and often infamous history.

In its formative years, DARKTHRONE made its mark with a strong concoction of Thrash, then Death/Doom Metal experimentation. Never ones to follow convention or stand still even then, the band soon embraced a much darker, more primitive form of expression with its iconic second album A Blaze in the Northern Sky. Now the longstanding duo of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto return with their first studio album since 2016’s hugely popular Arctic Thunder.

Old Star displays a mastery of the art of the riff, with its 6 epic tracks taking in the best of the old school of Heavy and Extreme Metal combined with a large dose of Doom channeled through the grime of the underground.

Vocalist/guitarist Nocturno Culto’s production is complemented by a powerful, organic mix courtesy of Sanford Parker (VOIVOD) at Hypercube Studios. Mastering is courtesy of Jack Control.

The stellar cover artistry is by Chadwick St John (titled The Shepherd Of The Deep).

So, there you have it. You are desperate to listen now, aren't you? Check it out below. enjoy!

If that's wet your appetite for the new album, you needn't wait too long. "Old Star" is due to drop on May 31 via Peaceville and available to pre-order now, here!

Immortal - Mighty Ravendark

IMMORTAL has been one of the most important black metal bands in the world, since the release of their first demo “The Northern Upins Death” in 1990. Over the last eleven years, IMMORTAL have slowly – but not always quietly – established themselves as a leading act in black metal. With the recent passing of the last emperor, the black metal world is like a snake with no head, a writhing mass of coiled muscle wasting away under the weight of its own grimness. It’s time for the true successor to step forward and seize the abdicated throne. And I promise you this, true believers, it won’t be a gaggle of major label limeys in Halloween costumes sporting bad dye jobs and fake blood.

With the ninth studio album "Northern Chaos Gods" by Norwegian black metal band IMMORTAL they still show that they can still be count on at the scene of extremists and god haters.

"Northern Chaos Gods" was released on 6 July 2018. This is the first album after the departure of Abbath from the band and their first studio album in almost nine years since "All Shall Fall" (2009), marking the longest gap between two studio albums by IMMORTAL. Once again recorded at Abyss Studios and produced by Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy), who also produced the last two. Peter also played bass on this album. In an interview before the album's release, Demonaz said he wanted to make the album as "grim, dark and cold as possible"

Today's tune "Mighty Ravendark" is taken from "Northern Chaos Gods", enjoy!

The Sabbathian - Latum Alterum

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Latum Alterum" is the second album from the Norwegian/American entity THE SABBATHIAN, the follow up to their debut EP "Ritual Rites" in 2014.

THE SABBATHIAN is a collaboration between the multi-instrumentalist Chad Davis (HOUR OF 13), vocalist Anette Uvaas Gulbrandsen (NÀTTSÒL) and Joey Downs.

Doom and heavy riffs, haunting tunes with beautifully vocals is the main theme of "Latum Alterum". The album have a dark, gothic almost occultish atmosphere, a step away from the origins of doom metal and towards the heavier vistas traversed by Nordic metalmongers such as BATHORY or CANDLEMASS. The album title is in latin, if I'm not wrong it means "How to summon spirits from the other side", correct me if I am out on thin ice here. Musically the album is very well made, have a solid doom foundation for Anette to stand on. The album mostly keeps the marching pace except for the more blackened tune "Liti Kiersti" where the vocals have a folkish approach. "The Brightest Light" have a really beautifully vocals in the gothic metal doom harmoney that Chad streamers up. "Head Of A Traitor" is heavy piece, over 9 minutes of heavy doomish noise in a straight forward pace and features guest vocals from Liv Kristine (MIDNATTSOL, ex-LEAVES EYES). In the more classic doom tune "Embrace The Dark" that retains the sound of the EP, excellent vocals and a stunning guitar work. The intro "Requiem" and outro in the last part of "Evig Hvile" are meant as a way of blessing the souls on their journey. "Latum Alterum" is giving you as a listener over 44 minutes of accessible crunchy gloomy gothic blackened doom, this is definitely a must have, for fans of of doom and black metal.

Sum: This is a solid powerful blackened gothic doom album.

Today's tune "Liti Kjersti", is taken from "Latum Alterum", enjoy!

Okkultokrati - Hidden Future

One Friday that this feels a bit messy in general, in big need of some heretic sound noise to welcome the long awaited casual weekend, i'm free!! God, that's so nice, even though it is pretty booked with various activities and other things that just have to be done, but still, happy days.

So for the Friday music, well the Norwegian sludge/noise gang OKKULTOKRATI released an interesting record last year "Raspberry Dawn" where the heretic rock with the noisy sludge approach is at it's top. Classic ‘70s riffing, snotty punk, and brash old-school metal are inventively mixed with pulses and spikes of darkwave and ice cold, psychedelic repetition. Wonderful mix to kick of a Friday like this, huh!

Raspberry Dawn will be released on all formats via Southern Lord on September 23rd.

Today's tune "Hidden Future" taken from the latest album "Raspberry Dawn" (2016) on Southern Lord Recordings.

Age Sten Nilsen's Ammunition - Road To Babylon

Former WIGWAM Frontman Teams Up With Members Of W.E.T, ECLIPSE, KING DIAMOND, SABATON, PRETTY MAIDS, NORDIC BEAST, CIRCUS MAXIMUS and WIGWAM!

Age Sten Nilsen is picking up where his former band WIGWAM left off. Penning new rock anthems with Erik Mårtensson (ECLIPSE/W.E.T) in Stockholm since October 2013, originally dedicated for the long awaited sixth studio album from Wigwam. When Wigwam surprisingly decided to call it a day after 13 years, Age Sten soon formed his own band, recording the new songs in the vein of the new band effort AMMUNITION.

The new material wears the same catchiness as Wigwam, yet offers a rougher and more subtle sound and arrangements than his former band’s latter productions. Produced by one of melodic rocks most esteemed producers Erik Mårtensson, Ammuniton is now on the verge of finishing its first album due for a release later this year. With a dream team of rock musicians in the line-up Ammunition has already debuted live, blasting through Wigwam gems blended with new unreleased songs from the forthcoming album and live favorites from LED ZEPPELIN and QUEEN.

Ammunition is:

Åge Sten Nilsen - vocals (WIGWAM/NORDIC BEAST)
Hal Patino - bass (KING DIAMOND/PRETTY MAIDS/NORDIC BEAST)

Wardruna - Helvegen

Wardruna is a Norwegian music group founded by Einar Kvitrafn Selvik. In 2009 Wardruna enchanted their listeners with their mesmerizing debut album "gap var Ginnunga", which also was the first part of a planned trilogy. In the ensuing years the group have spent a lot of time on adapting their music to a live format and establishing a live band. This resulting in a handful of very special concerts, perhaps most notably when they performed in front of the majestic 1100-year-old Gokstad ship at the Viking Ship Museum in Norway.

With the use of the oldest of Nordic instruments and poetic metres as well as lyrics written in Norwegian, Old Norse and Proto-Norse tongue, Wardruna is now, after nearly three years in the making, finally ready to return with the second album in the ‘Runaljod’ trilogy entitled ‘Yggdrasil’. Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Einar Kvitrafn Selvik has, together with vocalists Kristian Espedal (aka Gaahl) and Lindy-Fay Hella, managed to make a strikingly beautiful and intense continuation of what was started with their first album, but without falling into the trap of merely repeating themselves. ‘Yggdrasil’ is also graced with guest appearances by renowned Icelandic composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson and Iceland’s leading rímur singer Steindór Andersen.

The ongoing ‘Runaljod’ trilogy is a musical rendition of the 24 runes in what is often referred to as the elder futhark. Some of the recordings are done outdoors in places or under circumstances of significance to each rune. Wardruna primarily use old and historical instruments such as primitive deer-hide frame drums, Kraviklyra, tagelharpe, mouth harp, goat horn, lur and more. Non-traditional instruments and other sources of sound like trees, rocks, water and torches are also used.

All of these elements are carefully woven into a rich musical landscape and complemented with whispering voices, melodic song and mighty choirs. Although Wardruna’s music share characteristics with music typically labeled as folk, world and/or ambient, none of these genres can really describe their unique style. It truly must be experienced.

This is really an empowering show of how to stretch your excising historical musical instruments to  to make some magic, this is excellent piece of work creating an atmosphere to take the listener out on a real journey with out using the classic tools and riffs. Wardruna’s latest release is a real piece of art!

Todays tune "Helvegen" taken from their latest album "Yggdrasil", Wardruna performing live at Castlefest in Lisse, Netherlands on August 2, 2012.

Satyricon - The Infinity of Time and Space

A new week and it's time to present this week's "Record Of The Week" This week goes to the Norwegian metal band Satyricon and their new self titled album. The fact that I like the little lethargic, mid-tempo drudge, drafty, monotonous sound that Satyricon possess, it's dark and a little creepy and with a doomier approach witch I like.

I got very good impression of the album, which has been growing alot latly. It might look and feel very light and easy at the surface, but with a few turns it gets right.

Satyr (Sigurd Wongraven) & Frost (Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad) have done a great job one more time and im looking forward to the show at Debaser in December.

Satyricon - Mother North

A little dreary day, weather-wise, however, it has been given the opportunity for a bit of painting, both snakes and crows have been created, on the way to being finished. Lots of music is played. Tested with connecting my wife's iPad to the stereo and ran a little random on one of my play-lists on Spotify, one of the songs that popped up was this.

Todays tune "Mother North" is the centerpiece taken from Nemesis Divina (Latin for "divine nemesis") the third studio album by Norwegian black metal band Satyricon. It was released on 22 April 1996. Nemesis Divina is generally considered a classic of the black metal genre.

A music video was released for "Mother North", which was generally uncommon within the black metal scene at the time. The video opens with "Montagues and Capulets". The video briefly appeared in the mainstream film Spun.

(Live P3Sessions 09.04.06)

Satyricon (pronounced: suh-Teer-I-con) is a Norwegian black metal band. The band credits their first album, Dark Medieval Times, with starting a black metal sub-genre dubbed "medieval metal." The album showed off the fascination Satyricon had with the Middle Ages, along with the raw black metal with blastbeats produced by Frost mixed with acoustic guitar and flute. On the next album The Shadowthrone this medieval spirit was preserved.

Regarding one of their latest albums, Volcano, the frontman of the band, Satyr, stated in a press release/biography, published on their homepage, that "the music is rock based but more extreme; it is black metal pushing the boundaries that began with bands like Venom and Bathory, reinventing ourselves based on a foundation of rock oriented black metal is our philosophy." It resulted in a total of 4 Awards for Volcano being, the Norwegian Grammy for "Best Metal Album", an Alarm award for "Fuel For Hatred" in the category for "Song of the Year", as well as The Alarm Award for "Metal Album of the Year" and The Oslo awards for "Best Overall Album".

They have many famous fans: Phil Anselmo, James Hetfield, Joey Jordison, Bjørn Einar Romøren, and many more.

They have toured with Pantera, among others.

TNT - 10000 Lovers (In One)

Today is Norway's national day, a day usually celebrated properly if you compare it against the Swedish National Day is celebrated. We salute our neighbours by playing a Norwegian song.

TNT is a Norwegian hard rock/glam metal band from Trondheim, formed in 1982. The band has released twelve studio albums, three EPs and two live albums while going through numerous line-up changes since its formation. Guitarist Ronni Le Tekrø is the only consistent member of TNT.

Todays tune "10,000 Lovers (In One)" is a single taken from their 1987 album Tell No Tales.

The song was written about a girl who TNT's vocalist at that time, Tony Harnell, knew. It reached the Billboard Hot 100 chart in America, and earned the band a Norwegian Grammy.

In 2006 TNT recorded a new version of the song together with the Norwegian rapper Vinni from the band Paperboys. This version included newly written and controversial rap lyrics, which fueled Harnell to make a statement.

Vinni joined TNT for a couple of performances of the new version in concerts and on national TV shows. It was scheduled to be included on a compilation of Norwegian hits, but it was cancelled due to unknown problems.

God Seed - Alt Liv

The will to grow. The god within man. The god within nature, and the will to reach one's highest potential.

These are values all embedded in the name of God Seed. God Seed is a Norwegian black metal band based in Bergen, Norway. Former Gorgoroth members Gaahl and King ov Hell adopted the name in March 2009 following the ending of the Gorgoroth name dispute. After perforimg a few gigs as God Seed, vocalist Gaahl left the band in July 2009 and it was put on hold. King finished the music for God Seed's first album, with vocalist Shagrath, and released it under the name Ov Hell. Gaahl re-joined God Seed in 2012. In January 2012 did they released the live album Live at Wacken (live album recorded in 2008), and in October they released their first studio album, I Begin.

What "King" says about the band: "God Seed" represents a more spiritual side to us. "God Seed" represents the will to grow; the will to be the super man, so to speak. I think it's a suitable name for what we will represent in the future. It will challenge the weak minded, but it's all about the same themes we are known from in the past. The God within man, and the God within nature."

The Band Featuring:

King - bass
Lust Kilman - Guitars
Geir Bratland - Keys
Kenneth Kapstad - Drums
Sir - Guitars
Gaahl - vocals

This is the 1st studio record King and Gaahl release together since Gorgoroth`s "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam"! Read more about God Seed and "I Begin".

Todays tune is God Seed's first music video "Alt Liv" from the new album "I Begin". Produced by Mats Willassen. It was released on October 23, 2012 in North America and on October 30, 2012 in Europe.
