Dopelord - Sign Of The Devil

Monday, new week. It's time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Sign Of The Devil" is the fourth full-length by the Polish doom/stoner veterans DOPELORD. A band that was founded in late 2010 in Lublin. Smoking, rehearsing and touring. Their main inspirations are old movies, 70s music, and magical herbs.

This follow-up to 2017’s great album "Children Of The Haze" offers a pretty similar trip in the traditional stoner doom world. There is one difference in the latest effort comparing to the previous releases, the songwriting has increased a lot and makes "Sign Of The Devil" as DOPELORDs finest release so far.

36 minutes is what "Sign Of The Devil" clocks in at, that divided into 6 tunes, lights up pretty quickly that the songs hold a rather moderate long play. Tune low, play slow and heavy, a typical signature for a band like this. The tunes take some time and let the demon slowly get up close, and when the time is right, beat their sharp claws hard and deep in your human body.

The album opens up with a thick bassline in "The Witching Hour Bell", the tune has a driven drony line with clean vocals, the same formula is used in "World Beneath Us" and "Heathen", the later with a more melodic vocal vibe. The filthy blackened "Hail Satan" has some mixed vocals between harsh and clean, it also contains some incredible riffs and it's very groovy, psychedelic and ends with a nice synth part which gives the tune a cool facelift. The excellent titled "Doom Bastards" falls just off of the ten-minute mark, heavy and slow spacey leads that after a while falls into the heavy and earth-cracking riffs in a bed of roses with a devil trying to recruit you to the other side. The album closes with the punky and speedy "Headless Decapitator" that really shows that they can leave the slow pace and get a bit electrified. So get ready to shake your overweight body to this. DOPELORD has really managed to create an interesting and well-made experience that contains earth-cracking riffs, low tuned doom to headbanging rock. At least Satan will wave his hands high for this release.

The amazing album artwork that captures all the classic doom influences, like kings, magic, darkness, religion, plague, and deaths is made by Fabian Staniec (Pathogen Tattoo)

Line-up:
Piotr Zin aka Klusek - Bass, Vocals
Paweł Mioduchowski aka Miodek - Guitar, Vocals
Grzegorz Pawłowski Mroku - Guitar
Piotr Ochociński - Drums

Today's tune "Doom Bastards" is taken from "Sign Of The Devil", the album was released March 10, 2020. Enjoy!

Batushka - Utrenia

BATHUSKA and BATHUSKA, a lot of things have happened in the BATHUSKA camp the last year, from one really promising band to two bands in one year, intrigue, discord, tour or not to tour, various versions of backgrounds, it becomes quite giddy about what is what. BATHUSKA as a band that really blown me away with the debut "Litourgiya", a record that got many hours of playtime. Nowadays I'm not really sure what to like and think about version 1 or 2.

Both of them (that is, the antagonists, former friends, guitarist Krzysztof Drabikowski (version 1) and singer Bartłomiej Krysiuk (version 2)) have now both released an album, version 1 in May and version 2 in July. Both albums feel rushed and full of hatred about the situation.

Krzysztof Drabikowski is widely regarded as the one who has been merely stalking his life's work and is often called True BATHUSKA by his fans. Bartłomiej Krysiuk is generally considered the villain who simply took over Drabikowski's creation, or cut him off, and his official version of BATHUSKA, supported by Metal Blade, is called by the Drabikowski fans of Fake BATHUSKA. Mazy?.

Bartłomiej Krysiuk "Hospodi (Господи)" (version 2) have a bigger and better production, I guess it's because Metal Blade is behind this version. Decent tunes and opens up pretty good but falls a bit in the end. My favorite tune is "Crucifixion - Utrenia (Утреня)", the easy and clever riffing in the middle of the tune is magically simple and seductive. So if you sum these both albums up, takes the best parts and merge it together and a great BATHUSKA release would have entered the world.

Today's tune "Chapter IV: Crucifixion - Utrenia (Утреня)", taken from the album "Hospodi (Господи)". released 12 July 2019.

Батюшка - Песнь 1

BATHUSKA and BATHUSKA, a lot of things have happened in the BATHUSKA camp the last year, from one really promising band to two bands in one year, intrigue, discord, tour or not to tour, various versions of backgrounds, it becomes quite giddy about what is what. Mazy?.

Below you can hear Krzysztof Drabikowski's song. And tomorrow is Bartłomiej Krysiuk's version.

So let's play a tune from version 1, where we have Krzysztof Drabikowski behind the creation. After a few spins on both albums, there are some differences, not big, they both follow the atmospheric with melodic chants mixed with black metal. Both are good, follows the already made path, decent creations and innovative black metal, but if they had worked together it would have been awesome I guess.

Krzysztof Drabikowski version feels and sounds like a follow up to "Litourgiya", a bit harder and darker. It has a decent production from the digital file I'm listening to, would like to have a Vinyl version to truly get into it, hope he releases it on the true media. Favorites tunes are "Песнь 1", "Песнь 5" and "Песнь 6". But it's very hard to analyze the albums, I'm so infected by the bullshit around these guys.

Today's tune "Песнь 1" taken from the second album "Панихида", released May 26, 2019. Music composed, produced, recorded and mastered by Krzysztof Drabikowski at SPHIERATZ STUDIO, Sobolewo, Poland

Behemoth - I Loved You At Your Darkest

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"I Loved You At Your Darkest" (ILYAYD for short) is the 11th full-length release for the Polish blackened death metal band BEHEMOTH. The album was released on October 5, 2018.

BEHEMOTH is a band that always been about breaking boundaries, taboos, leaving its comfort zone and thinking out of the box! Something that I value high as listner to their musical creations. After the masterpiece of "The Satanist" the previous album, they are back with another powerful, dark and full of mind-blowing sounds that will surely run more than one time on your record player, mine has even if I am a bit late with this review. ILYAYD is an album with no fillers, extremely good quality straight true the album. BEHEMOTH shows that they still are one of the top bands in their genre.

Nergal's vocals are horrified and excellent, guitar playing is melodic and evil. Inferno's drumming is like a furious machine. The hellish bass licks by "Orion" and the haunted and icy riffing by "Seth" makes this a very good band.

ILYAYD opens up with the "Not to forgive" from the children’s choir in the intro "Solve" until the "Wolves Ov Siberia" shows it blackened backbone self. "God = Dog" features classic black metal with heavy riffing and a insane video. The melodic blackened piece "If Crucifixion Was Not Enough" is a real beauty to the lovley and vicious power ballad "Bartzabel" or the catchy choruses and riffs in the hypnotic hymn to the anti-god "Havohej Pantocrator", in "Angelvs XIII" and "Sabbath Mater" we get some powerful BEHEMOTH pieces, blasting, screaming, hateful and some melodic guitar riffing to the tear the heads off tune "Ecclesia Diabolica Catholica", overload and blastbeat-heavy tunes like "Rom 5:8" and the album closer "Coagvia". It doesn't get more blasphemous than this!

Sum: ILYAYD is another strong addition to BEHEMOTHs remarkable musical catalog.

Today's tune "Bartzabel", taken from ILYAYD, enjoy!

Spaceslug - Osiris

Polish Cozmic Doom is not something we hear everyday, but SPACESLUG is one of them. With today's tune "Osiris" taken from the bands second and latest album "Time Travel Dilemma", released 2017.

SPACESLUG was formed in Wrocław, Poland, 2015 by guitarist Bartosz Janik and drummer Kamil Ziółkowski and then completed by bassist Jan Rutka. Together they started their biggest musical journey through space, time and multiuniverses.

They succed in 2016 with their debut album "Lemanis" that granted the band a great entry to the community of Stoner/Doom/Psych music.

Driven by the success of their debut LP they took their approach and music to a new level and recorded second album "Time Travel Dilemma" which was released one year after debut.

Second journey starts where the first one leaves the listener and takes him to the whole new universum among the stars and supermassive black holes.

Enjoy!

Batushka - Litourgiya

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record of the Week".

Yes, I'm still stuck in the extreme, I guess that I have to blame Chief Rebel for that. Since the annual Hard Rock evening the harder tones have been played a lot and it seams that I can't stop,  I also started to go true the records that have been stuck to the side for the genre that was overwhelming me before Christmas. Something that I'm pretty happy for after all, as there was many records that was really good, here is one that really blew me away.

BATUSHKA is a Polish band whose members have not been disclosed, well they are doing the GHOST thingie, but they are reputed to be from well-known bands, rumours whispering that MGLA is behind this, if so well done guys as this is a great release.

BATUSHKA is pronounced "Batjushka", the band's Cyrillic name Батюшка means "father" and is used to address an Eastern Orthodox priest. Despite their themes and imagery, they are not a Christian band.

"Litourgiya" is masterfully crafted piece of art, it's clouded with a dark atmosphere surrounded with Orthodox imagery and liturgical chant in a marvellous blend of Black Metal and Doom Metal. The riffs are heavy, distorted and very down tuned along with tight bass and blistering drumming. From start to finish it has a deep feeling evil amends and old history, almost that you can feel the incense when you close your eyes and listening through your high-end headphones.

The production is really good, it's raw and constant, perfectly for this record. was the influence of Rotting Christ

Summery: It's a must have album, if you can obtain a copy go on and grab it.

Today's tune "Yektenia I" is taken from "Litourgaya"

Behemoth - The Satanist

"The Satanist", is the new video from Polish extreme metallers BEHEMOTH.

The video, directed by Andrzej Dragan, is another ambitious and visually striking piece of art from the band that’s known for videos that remain a cut above standard metal music videos.

Behemoth front man Nergal comments:

"BEHEMOTH has always been about breaking boundaries, taboos, leaving its comfort zone and thinking out of the box! Here we go again with the brand new video from us. It’s already a fourth official clip off "The Satanist"… The concept came from the director, Andrzej Dragan. It’s situated in modern Warsaw in the present times. It’s where the carnal world meets the unknown… it’s where the ZOS meets KIA… It’s where SACRUM is raped by PROFANUM…"

Director Andrzej Dragan adds:

"This is a picture of alienation and ultimate rejection of an over sensitive character by an anonymous city."

I really adore when a band put so much effort in the creation of a Video. BEHEMOTH have always created something different, they stand out from the masses and consistently creates visually stunning and provoked Videos.

In "The Satanist" a confused woman walks the streets of Warsaw, Poland. The woman is filled with fear and confusion, almost that she panics when she tries to get forward in a world that is distorted.

Today's tune is the title track from the tenth album "The Satanist", Released February 3, 2014 The video is Directed and Produced by Andrzej Dragan.

Behemoth - Chant For Ezkaton 2000 e.v

The year is 2014, the month is February and the most extreme, blackest and fearful of tours settles over Europe.

Cradle Of Filth and Behemoth embarks on co-headline tour and nineteen dates are booked over that continent which one of them is at Tyrol in Stockholm on February 25 (Yesterday).

Behemoth may have been a classic black metal band originally, but it was not enough for the brutal multi talented Negal and mixed into death metal, progressive and experimental elements which led to the multi-faceted beast Zos Kia Cultus (2002). After having conquered and defeated all of Evangelion (2009), it was leukemia as the front man had to master and from the fire's ashes rose the man who wears the "holy scripture" in pieces and created the album The Satanist (2014) that you according to Nergal's statement below would expect while the tour starts.

The support bands on the tour is the Swedish In Solitude, Chilean / American Inquisition and Norwegian Svarttjern.

A quick summary of the evening was that behemoth actually owned the place. What was most baffling that not Behemoth got to be the last slot this evening, got told that they ran every other gig as headliner and the Stockholm show it was the Cradle Of Filths turn, which you could see as soon as Behemoths show was over, 2/3 of the audience went home.

Norwegian Svarttjern was a fairly pleasant surprise, okey in my ears, pretty good swing in the songs. Chilean / American Inquisition delivered really good, nice to get the chance to see them live. Clearly exceeded expectations. Swedish In Solitude delivered an okay show, a little shaky at first, but came back at the end, the tune Sister was really powerful live. Cradle Of Filth as a final act with only a couple hundred people in the audience probably was not as they had expected, I thought it was pretty boring actually.

Live rates:

Svarttjern 3/5
Inquisition 4/5
In Solitude 3/5
Behemoth 5/5
Cradle Of Filth 2/5

There are some photos at my Instagram, check it up here!

Behemoth is a Polish extreme metal band from Gdańsk, formed in 1991. They are considered to have played an important role in establishing the Polish extreme metal underground.

Todays tune "Chant For Eschaton 2000" is originally taken from the fourth studio album "Satanica" released in 1999. But this version is from the sixth EP "Ezkaton". It was released in 2008. The EP features seven tracks, including one new song titled Qadosh, a live recording and new studio version to Chant for Ezkaton 2000 e.v., live versions of From the Pagan Vastlands and Decade ov Therion, along with covers of Master's Hammer's Jáma pekel and Ramones' I'm Not Jesus.

I saw the virgin's cunt spawning forth the snake I witnessed tribes ov Judah reduced to ruin I watched disciples twelve dissolved by flame Looked down on son ov god snuffed in vain

Blow your trumpets Gabriel! As I beheld the bewilderment ov Eden Break the bread...and crumb by crumb into the Leviathan's den... Nations fall prey Hail my return

Hosanna Hosanna Tribe ov Judah decimate Hosanna Hosanna Root ov David eradicate

Hosanna Hosanna Let wine ov Sodom fill our mouths Hosanna Hosanna May Sin ov Gommorah grace our hearts.

The frontman Adam "Nergal" Darski states about the video:

"Yes, we took all the time in the world to complete this project. And we did everything that was humanely possible to accurately express our vision. We crossed the Rubicon.

"'Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel' is an ecstatic manifest of our unrestrained artistic will, where we dare to reach out beyond the limitations of the heavy metal genre. And it's only the beginning."

"The Satanist" deluxe box, which is available in North America as an European import, includes: CD/DVD digibook in silver mirror slipcase with a high-quality 44-page booklet (with gold foil, UV gloss lamination), supersize poster flag (approx. 3.5' x 5'), wooden black inverted rosary cross, metal pin, black envelope with black communion wafers. The DVD, "Live Barbarossa", includes a professionally filmed show in Ekaterinburg, Russia, as well as 30-minute documentary about the creative process behind "The Satanist".

"The Satanist" was produced by Behemoth, Wojtek and Slawek Wieslawscy and Daniel Bergstrand at Hertz Studio. The CD was mixed by Matt Hyde (Slayer) and mastered by Ted Jensen (Metallica, AC/DC) at Sterling Sound in New York City. The cover art for "The Satanist" was painted by renowned Russian painter and occultist Denis Forkas. The paint used included some of Nergal's own blood. Additional art and design was completed by Metastazis (Paradise Lost) and Zbigniew Bielak (Watain, Ghost).

"I wanted to incorporate some of my DNA into the art," Nergal told Australia's Heavy magazine about having his blood included in "The Satanist" artwork.

According to Darski, at least some of the inspiration for the new Behemoth album came from his five-month bout of leukemia he overcame in January 2011, after receiving a bone-marrow transplant. "When I was in the hospital, I was collecting experiences and emotions," he said. "I'm pretty sure that it's coming out now. There are moments I catch myself thinking about how my state was back then. It was me versus life, me versus death. It definitely changed my thoughts a lot. It's 100 percent being reflected in the record and songs I'm writing nowadays. I'm way more radical than I used to be."
"The Satanist" track listing:

01. Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel
02. Furor Divinus
03. Messe Noire
04. Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer
05. Amen
06. The Satanist
